- threemagic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+17No, you don't wish that...what you really wish for is an intel Mac.
'tis the season..maybe Santa has one ready for you? - TomP, on 10/12/2007, -3/+19Link http://download3.vmware.com/software/fusion/VMware-Fusion-e.x.p-36932.dmg
- Tom | http://www.tomwrote.info - funksta, on 10/12/2007, -0/+15As a Virtual PC owner... trust me, it's not pretty.
- joel8x, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9Why? You like slow emulation a-la Virtual PC?
- threemagic, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9You could have.. Parallel's has worked for a long time now and let me tell you as it stands it kicks VMWare's buttocks. Competition is good!
- node3, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Cocoa provides virtually no advantage in this case. Only the front-end of Fusion is Cocoa. I highly doubt VMware recoded their entire product in Objective-C.
Parallels isn't written in QTKit (which is the QuickTime framework for Cocoa). It's written in Qt, which is an entirely different thing.
Qt/Mac can be used in Xcode (not x-code), can be used with Cocoa, and has absolutely nothing to do with supporting a phone via USB.
In fact, I'm hard pressed to find anything in your post that makes any sense, so I'll just stop here. - DrBones, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6I think he means he can use THE SAME IMAGE on different host operating systems. This would be valuable to some... Though I am not sure that will be the case in the end.
- node3, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Again, I *really* doubt they re-wrote the entire system in Objective-C. It just doesn't make any sense when you can just re-do the interface in Cocoa/Objective-C and keep your existing C code intact, unchanged. The underlying VM will gain *absolutely no* functional benefit from being re-written in Objective-C. None.
Secondly, absolutely *everything* that you can do in Cocoa, you can do in Carbon. The reason is you can make Cocoa calls from Carbon, and Carbon calls from Cocoa. There is absolutely no feature whatsoever that Parallels cannot add simply because their interface is based on Qt.
Cocoa still provides value. Primarily, in that programs can be written more rapidly, features can be more easily added, and they can more easily take advantage of OS/framework upgrades. In other words, there are definitely advantages to using Cocoa, but they are not nearly as important as you imply, and they have absolutely *nothing* to do with kp's due to hubs, phones not working, 3d video support, etc.
Nothing at all. - KibibyteBrain, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5This is still good news as Parallels has been lacking many fairly basic VM features like USB 2.0 support until just very recently. I believe the perceived competition has made Parallels a far better product.
That being said, I think VMware Fusion has much catching up to do, especially with some of the features in the current Parallels Beta, like running windows applications in their own windows on the Mac desktop. - MySchizoBuddy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4its competition for parallels. but right now parallels has a huge lead in feature set. specially its coherence feature and ability to use the windows partition via bootcamp so u don't have to install windows again. just point to ur bootcamp.
- nichojo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3it also requires a direct3d card, which these emulators dont emulate.
- dep0we, on 10/12/2007, -5/+8I work a lot with VMWare. There products are outstanding. This is exciting news.
- node3, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@mgnyc11 & DrBones
Parallels is available for Linux and Windows as well as OS X (the Mac version gets all the press). Although I have no non-Mac systems to test this on, it would stand to reason that you can run the same image on any Parallels host. - nightchrome, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Schaweet.
- mgnyc11, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5This is really exciting news. Now I can use a VM on a Linux and Mac OS. I can just keep the VM on my iPod and use it on both systems. VMware is making some of the best commercial software products in the last few years!
- EgoDemens, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@MySchizoBuddy
I'm not sure about Fusion but VMware in general allows you to use real drives/partitions in your VM so if Fusion is in line with it's family the only advantage I see for Parallels is Coherence. - mmichie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Just install bootcamp dude. Games are always going to be a bit slower running in a VM.
- tonyarnold, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I updated my N73 via the new Parallels beta yesterday - worked a treat. I just had to remember to enable the "Automatically connect" option under my USB entry.
- SuperJason, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2But Microsoft Virtual PC supports snapshots. How do they get away with it if what you say is true?
- drlha, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3 Not to mention that I wouldn't recommend using a HD based iPod as a general hard drive. For transferring a few files, yes, but running an OS off it - not a good idea.
- ucg1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Well I haven't been too impressed with Parallels because it lacks SMP support. VMWare does support it.
Coherence is pretty sweet, though. But not useful for Linux VM's which is what I'd be using the most. But with Linux you can just use remote X to get a similar effect. - s11mac, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Use phony details from here http://manuals.awardspace.com/
Fill out the form and you will get the Serial no.
It is not mailed to you. It is given along with the download link - colincornaby, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I can verify this happens to me on my Macbook Pro with 1 gig of RAM.
- kitsonk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I am sure it will be. I have used VMWare Workstation for years as well as Player and Server. I have used most products on both Windows and Linux. I have been waiting with bated breath for the beta release since it was announced in August. Parallels has some things that really bug me about it that I was just used to with VMWare. We will see how Fusion does. I just downloaded and am off to play.
- ammonsphoto, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1yikiad,
Crossover Mac will let you do that (sort of) it depends on the app and IMHO it is still alittle buggy. It is beta however so that is to be expected.
http://www.codeweavers.com/products/cxmac/ - rtini, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'm answering my own question here... Windows XP x64 Edition works great. It's currently installing 50 critical Windows updates. I did a quick Cinebench test using the 64Bit version in Windows 64Bit, and it scored 775 - it scores 675 native in Mac OS X on my MacBook Pro 2.16Ghz Core 2 Duo. I wonder when Cinebench 64Bit for Mac will be available...
I love being able to allocate 2 virtual cores. I can't wait for the final release of VMWare Fusion! - TechPedia, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Does anyone know if it runs Aero effects in Vista?
- tonyarnold, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The VMware developers have officially stated that this functionality is not enabled in Fusion (although I expect they'll enable it before it goes gold). Parallels have also stated that the next major release of their Desktop product (3.0) will have graphic acceleration. They're expecting a beta in a month or two - I expect they'll show off some stuff at MacWorld in January.
Oh, and BTW: Check the first thread you linked to - none of the games mentioned actually seem to work...
All good news for we mac users anyway :) - MySchizoBuddy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2nup
u cannot do that - DaffyDuck, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Doesn't happen on my MBP either.
- timdau, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Does either VMware Fusion or Parallels allow you to run OS X on top of OS X?
- shuffle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I think the patent is relatively new. Not sure, check out a past 'cast of Security now for the details:
http://www.twit.tv/SN - rtini, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1whoops - I ran it again when critical updates weren't installing, scored 853 in Cinbench r9.5 64bit in multithreaded render...
- colincornaby, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Parallels seems to run MUCH smoother. And before everyone screams "But it's BETA!" I have to say that I feel Parallels was still much faster on it's initial release. "
Did you read the dialog that VMWare threw up every time it runs saying it's going to run slower than normal because it's running in debug mode? - shuffle, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4I really like the vmware product line but hate the use of their 'software patent' for the snapshot process. For those that don't know - this is why you do not see the ability to take 'snapshots' in paralells... vmware holds the patent on that. Shame on you vmware. If you can't win the race based on your own technical accomplishments - drop out. Don't stifle innovation and competition through such broad based conceptual patents.
- rtini, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Has anyone tried Windows XP 64Bit edition with it?
- dogearedboy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3I think VMWare has a lot of catch-up work to do.
Parallels seems to run MUCH smoother. And before everyone screams "But it's BETA!" I have to say that I feel Parallels was still much faster on it's initial release.
Once Parallels introduces a 'snapshot' type feature (early next year I've heard) I can't see much of a reason to switch over. Strangely that's the one feature I wanted in VMWare Fusion and it's missing. (Yes, again I realize it's still BETA.) - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1> can someone verify that giving it more RAM will make Aero work or is it officially not supported yet
Requires hardware video acceleration. - node3, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This never happens with Parallels on my MacBook.
- capran, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1AFAIK, anything based on WINE is beta, and probably always will be unless Microsoft opens up the Win32 API.
- node3, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Parallels is in beta too!
For proper comparison:
Parallels beta to Fusion beta
--and/or--
Current non-beta of Parallels to - 0x41, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1But it's BETA!
/sorry, I had to :p - djgraphite, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I just wanted to warn people that clicking the direct download link doesn't quite work. Sure you get the app, but you don't get a serial mailed to you. And you need a serial to run any VM.
- mfratz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I've been using Parallels for a long time and really love it but the one thing that would get me to switch is whichever vm comes out with the ability to play windows games like NHL 07 on the windows vm. If either of them ever did that, I would switch in a second. Anyone know if that's happening anytime soon?
- DaffyDuck, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Why would you want that? I LIKE the fact that Parallels only uses one core while OS X uses the other. I tried Fusion briefly and didn't like it because it didn't multitask as well with OS X.
- bluflame, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1For some reason, my Wireless Mighty Mouse will work in BootCamp, but not the bluetooth control panel. So, by definition, BlueTooth "Works".
- nofxjunkee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@neosublime: I like Parallels better as well, but the recent betas do not have stellar performance so your comment is lame. Seriously, you can't compare release versions to betas. You'd think that was just common sense...
When they both have final versions out then we can compare. Or you can compare current betas, that's all. - johnpaul191, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1people do install an OS on their iPod. the plus side is that you have it in your pocket and can boot off it in an emergency (like doing troubleshooting) the minus side is that (supposedly?) the HDD in the iPod is really not made to take that kind of constant spinning. that's supposedly why "home on iPod" never really came out. it had been listed on Apple.com as an upcoming feature for (iirc) 10.3 or 10.4 but it just vanished one day. granted a /home is not like booting a whole operating system, but it still would tax the drive a bit..... i guess?
does booting off iPods even work with the Intel machines? i know you can't boot an Intel machine off of a PPC machine via target disk mode, so maybe this is not an option anymore. i suppose google will answer this question.... (looking.....) - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"so even your iSight video camera and Bluetooth will work in Windows."
Screen shots please. - kevdotbadger, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Looking forward to installing it tomorrow morning. I'm a users of Parallels and im VERY happy with it. Want to try out the competition!
