Apple has been filing various patents that appear to be demonstrated in this video so it's a reasonable thought. Besides, I think the question mark at the end of the headline makes it clear the link is speculative. Stop overreacting. - ThinkBox, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4We will all say this one day - "When i was your age, i used to have a Keyboard and Mouse!"
- plumeria, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3You might want to check out the Diamond Touch from MERL (Mitsubishi Electric Research Laboratories) - it's been around for a while now. http://www.merl.com/projects/DiamondTouch/

Not only is this technology something Apple just filed a flurry of patents for, it's very obviously OS X in parts of the video (Yes, that is Google Earth for a Mac. How do I know? I have a Mac, I've used Google Earth, I've seen it many times before.)
It's a thing of absolute beauty. Did you see how fluid the touchscreen keyboard was? And the photo management blew me the ***** away, I would have absolutely never thought I'd see something like that in my lifetime, no matter what Sci Fi says. If Apple were to ship this tomorrow, I'd never, ever touch a PC again.
We have seen the future. Now, can we wait for it? - clumsyninja, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2OmegaNine: "Other than being super freakin neet, and making me want one, i cant see the real world application that would make someone spend the freakish amount of money its going to go for. Even touch screen are still retarded expensive. I just don't see this going anyplace anytime soon."
Good point but:
"We introduce a simple technique that enables robust multi-touch sensing at a minimum of engineering effort and EXPENSE. It relies on frustrated total internal reflection (FTIR), a technique well known in the biometrics community for fingerprint image acquisition. It acquires true touch information at high spatial and temporal resolutions, and is scalable to very large installations."

While I wouldn't expect a screen the size of the one in that first video in every household, a 20" would/should be affordable. - hypermint, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2not sure if they posted this yet but this vid is wicked
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UcKqyn-gUbY - tristant, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2i can't even imagine how the guy using that must look like doing all that. i'd be laughing and crying and peeing myself nonstop.
it is so ***** smooth. the only drawback is using that for an hour or two would be so exhausting. - kabz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This video shows some of the patents that Apple have such as the pinch movement for zooming. Now, these are gestures!!
Awesome video, recommended! - Bitgod, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I can't wait to play Pong on it!
- KineticFlow, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2AMAZING. Google Earth, SimCity, and Black&White anyone?
- muikano, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I think it'll be just like your keyboard. Look at the dirt on your keyboards right now. At least, with touch screens, you can use windex and not fry your circuitry.
Still it would be a hassle to have to continually wipe your screen for prints. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Not sure, but you may want to check these sites.

http://multi-touchscreen.com - spyke77, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1cool but nobody mentioned the "greasy finger screen effect"... I hope you can wipe some good ole Windex on these screens.
- DMCau, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Ahh, took me ages to load (but that might just be my net)
Anyway, a mirror.

- PhAdE, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I happen to like typing, Keyboards offer a really nice amount of tactile feedback. It would piss me off having to type on a giant pocket PC screen all day. Also, this probably wouldn't have the best applications in gaming. That being said, this looks amazing for almost every other application. Seeing as how FTIR is used in the biometrics community for fingerprint acquisition, I can see this eliminating some of the security headaches associated with biometric logins and such. It'd be like having fingerprint scanners in your keys.
- inkswamp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Wow... I'm amazed nobody has yet brought up the potential for porn on this thing.
I mean, not that I'm interested. - Wyek, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Jeff Han didn't invent this but he made it possible. Before him it was just a bunch of conceptuals and experimentals things... nothing related to multi-users/multi-touch interactives interfaces. And he really push the technology a little bit... Anyway, it's not apple, it's not microsoft, it's Jeff in this story that is the true hero.

another one (windows version) - trevz0r, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Here is a youtube miror aswell:

Who Am I
Peace Orchestra
Animatrix The Album (bonus tracks)
other than that, this is undeniably cool... however, they are also using a freaking huge monitor... somehow i think a 12" ibook screen will crimp my hand's a bit ;) - deepsub, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I for one welcome our new mouseless overlords.
- flashmaster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Is this the Magna Doodle v.2.0?
- felchdonkey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0dmcau - thanks for the mirror. These filecloud people are kind of morons, though. If you want to wait in line, the link says "I don't want an account because I am a sadist."
I think they meant masochist, but hey. Nothing wrong with showing your stupidity to the world...
Glad to get the video, anyway. - bluehouse, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0great video... poor spelling and grammar in the description
- cpawl, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It looks "neato" but really how practical would this be in everyday computing... especially on a small screen. I would love to "play" with this but I would rather not be waving my hands across my screen all day to accomplish things. Have you ever played "Mega touch"? Have you ever got your name on the board? Typing full paragraphs this way would be so ridiculously. This seems more of a novelty trick rather than the future of computing.
- shadowsurfr1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Very cool video.
Dugg. - FZero, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I want two!
- ldenman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0oh my god!
that was hott! - mirzmaster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Good God, that was so cool. Minority Report, here we come! :)
- iupetre, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Holy crap!
- tablatronix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0reminds me of the MIT media lab demoes of the induction table, but with fingers.
amazing.
wtf does this have to do with apple though ? - mirzmaster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Sorry to double post, but I think what people suspect is an OSX Dock is actually the Window panel for NASA's World Wind. Does it look like that to anyone else?
- manoftheisland, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0sweet... awesome... this tech could be a real "video" iPod or possibly a tablet of some sort?
- asjk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I know this has already been answered but the song title is itle: Who am I -- Artist: Peace Orchestra. I just wanted to remind people that the excellent Tunatic http://www.wildbits.com/tunatic/ is out there to answer ID questions using an AUDIO stream.
- lonelycanuck, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0where'd the comments go?
- kazem, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Wow.
- thedonger, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0They are using Core Image and for real-time effects
- kanu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Sooo basicly this is the next gen of what the lemur could be, but larger and with a screen that matches your computer screen instead of a static set animated buttons/sliders/etc, but it isnt on the market yet like lemur thats been out over a year?
http://www.jazzmutant.com/lemur_overview.php - Jolene, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Amazing video! I want one!!
That song is from the Animatrix, which I have the soundtrack to. Was a good fit. ^^ - griz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Way freaking cool!! Next generation of Apple Displays possibly?
DIIIIIIIIIIIIGGGGGGGGG!!!!! - demonduck, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The 'dock' jthat is seen in some of the video is part of NASA's WorldWind application not Google Earth and certainly not Apple. Amazing technology though.
- imack, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Future computer geeks are going to have the biggest arm-muscles from waving their arms around like that all day. They need to make it more user-friendly. We'll see this in museums, info-stands and the likes before any officedesks. Still - totally dugg!
- digitalbuzz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yeah i can see this as the future video iPod. Imagine a screen almost the same size of the current ipod. Just touch the screen and the Clickwheel will appear. Of course this would demand a fingerprint/scratch retardant screen...
- boredaghast, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Nothing to do with Apple, but a badass video nonetheless.
- imightbewrong, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0this is the future no doubts here
- holdemcharts, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Now that is frickin cool!
- rustyrobot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The Macintouch computer
- il0vemymac, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Digg X 1000
- hyperation, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0remember tactica pad or something. it is almost like that.
