- Poolshark19, on 10/12/2007, -8/+50how fast was the car jogging?
- mcpaige, on 10/12/2007, -8/+27"Who the hell hits someone and drives away *sigh* what is this world coming to?"
Yea and leaves the iPod behind ! ! ! ! - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14It would have been even quicker if she had engraved the back of it.
- kidlinux, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14For anyone saying "she must have had her music too loud and didn't hear the car coming."
Think about that for a second, you idiot.
When walking/running on the road, you're supposed to face traffic so you can see oncoming vehicles. So, if she was doing this then the car swerved at her from close range and chances are she wouldn't have been able to avoid it.
Now, if she were running with traffic (on the right-hand side of the road), or if YOU were running with traffic and you heard a vehicle coming behind you, would you think that it was going to hit you?? I think most people wouldn't even turn around to look.
We should be more concerned about why she was running with traffic than how loud her iPod was. You can't hear if a vehicle is going to hit you. It'd sound the same if it were coming up slightly behind you or beside you.
I bet her ability to hear the vehicles around her has absolutely no bearing on what happened. - ComputerNap, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13Thats unfortunate. I hope she does okay.
It woud've been neater had the iPod played a role in saving her, like she had some rare blood type and the iPod told them.
Even better yet, would've been if, after she got hit, the iPod ran to the police and started barking to alert the authorities that it's owner had been hurt. - dirtyfratboy, on 10/12/2007, -4/+14im guessing she was blasting music from her ipod and didnt hear the oncoming car... but then again she was identified by the same ipod... catch-22
- tylerni7, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12Who the hell hits someone and drives away *sigh* what is this world coming to?
- ttntyler, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10Who said she died?
"Now that Ashlyn's been identified, family and friends are rushing to her bedside, hoping of course that she'll pull through and that whoever hit her and drove away is caught."
Hoping of course that she'll pull through.. meaning she's still alive - nugge7, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9Poor girl. :-( I hope she pulls through,
- a1532b, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10It makes you wonder though, would she have been hit if she was paying attention and not listening to an ipod with the music cranked all the way up?
- CheapDigWannbe, on 10/12/2007, -4/+10"Yea and leaves the iPod behind ! ! ! !" - lol
I don't want to be mean or anything but there is a big probability that the ipod could have contributed to her death.
I myself have sometimes found myself in dangerous situations when not being able to hear approching cars due to me listening to music. - podolicious, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Good thing her iPod was registered.
- The_Decryptor, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8"Usage 345: Used to identify your mangled body"
- torrentado, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7ipod, is there anything it can't do?
- MrMysterious, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I agree, I hope that she makes it.
- RyeBrye, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Walkers are always supposed to be on the left side - facing traffic. Runners, on the other hand, don't have as clear-cut of a rule about which side to stay on. It depends largely on the road, traffic conditions, if there is a sidewalk or not... etc.
Although it makes sense to have runners on the same side as walkers, I've heard different runners say different things. Most road races - even ones where they don't stop traffic - have runners on the right side of the road. I guess the thought is that runners are like bikers and inline skaters (who are always supposed to be on the right side) they are moving fast in a straight line... so cars should pass around them...
Whatever the case - the car is always at fault when it hits someone. Unless that person is invisible. - allenu, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7This has been another installment in A Thousand and One Uses of the iPod. iPod: FTW!!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7Maybe the car honked and even tried to swerve but she couldn't hear because of her iPod... the story can be swing both ways...
- geminitojanus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"Walkers are always supposed to be on the left side - facing traffic. Runners, on the other hand, don't have as clear-cut of a rule about which side to stay on"
Are you seriously going to make that distinction??? It comes down to "If you're looking into traffic you can see the cars coming, if you're looking away from traffic you can only hear it coming and then you can't tell for sure what direction it's going". That, and you should try to wear bright/reflective clothes while running to give motorists an assist in case its dark or getting dark. - zimm, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4See! SEE!
See how far the RIAA is willing to go to stop music piracy?
Throw away your ipods! you are all marked for death!
:P - clharlem149, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2the article said there were no skid marks, and anyway if the driver cared so much as to try and avoid hitting her, why would he or she have driven away leaving the victim's body in a ditch like that, without calling an ambulance or anything?
- matx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1If she was carrying a windows machine, they would never been able to tell who it was!
- mcbesq, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@toyota
There's already been numerous articles on retrieving "erased" data (stolen or otherwise) from iPods and other HDDs. - toyotaboy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2*****, my ipod can trace me back to a crime scene?
CSI has to do an episode on this.. they could show some fake computer simulation of them going into the bios of the ipod and extracting hidden information. - underburn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yet people STILL Dont register their iPods... Sheesh.
- ToadX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'm surprised they were able to find out the owner of the iPod based on the serial number that quickly. What did Apple just hand the registration information over without any problem?
- thomashawk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1They still haven't found the person who did the hit and run. The City and Presidio Parks Trust have issued a $25,000 reward: http://abclocal.go.com/kgo/story?section=local&id=3996434
- krisniiran, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'm NEVER leaving my house without my iPod ever again
- jizzimmy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Haha I smell a new ad campaign.
IPODS SAVE LIVES! - Tux42, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Another reason to have an iPod.
1) play music
2) play videos
3) play games
4) view contacts
5) view schedule
6) prevent papers from blowing away ;)
7) illumination
8) view notes
9) data storage
10) alternate form of id - mcbesq, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Thank goodness that Apple came up with the idea of using numbers to uniquely identify a product and the idea of product registration.
I mean, seriously, would this story be on Digg if it didn't have the word "iPod" in it? Would it even be news (not that it is)? - anthonyb415, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This woman is unconscious in the hospital. These comments are tasteless! Enough with the attempted humor!
- Tux42, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Yes that is a good thing.
- mikeon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1http://sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?file=/c/a/2006/03/14/MNGDOHNPOO1.DTL
Apparently she did hear the car.
"Although she was listening to her iPod, police believe she heard the car and turned around before she was hit. That's because even though the car approached from behind, she was struck on her right side, as if she had been facing the vehicle."
If she had gotten help immediatly she would have been saved but after 10 minutes without oxygen to the brain, not much to do. - methodshop, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Last month, i blogged about another accident involving an iPod. An cyclist in London was killed while listening to her iPod at a high volume level. A friend of the woman said she may still be alive if she hadn't been listening to her iPod.
- anthonyb415, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Whats wrong with all of these tasteless 12 year olds!? It nice to actually see some compassion "nugge7"!
- The_Decryptor, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2How could the car not swerve out of the way, not like she took up a whole lane or was moving so fast he couldn't swerve in time.
- methodshop, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1why would Apple turn down the Police and not give them the iPod owner's info? the Police wanted to idenify an unconscious woman involved in a hit & run.
- OperatorNo9, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2http://digg.com/apple/Police_warning_for_iPod_users
If only the police had thought to include joggers in their warning... - gh3tto, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I'd make that bastard unconscious for hurting such a gorgeous woman
- soogy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Time to review the Apple privacy policy, methinks.
- RobotCitizen, on 10/12/2007, -4/+4I better not go jogging with my iPod. If I'm left in a ditch the cops will think I'm Bono.
I hope this woman pulls through, even though I hate joggers and usually cheer when they get eaten by a California mountain lion. But in this case she was wronged by some low-life who left her for dead in a ditch. I hope she's able to wake up and ID his ass. - sentai, on 09/06/2008, -0/+0http://www.du6.info I appreciate the good advices written in this article
- mike_c, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1yeah, by about 7 hours.
- psychogasm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Maybe it's me the cynical San Franciscan, but are more drivers knockin' the crap out of pedestrians (granted, she's not a typical pedestrian that gets mowed over, but you know what I mean) than usual?
I thought Muni pwned the right to run over people in the City.Times, they are a-changin'. - OperatorNo9, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Yeah. Only pretty people deserve to live.
- serra, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3Have any of y'all thought about going into stand up comedy? Seriously, I think I see the next Dane Cook in here. ;)
---------------------------------------------------
http://fuh-q.com - Tux42, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1True, but that could damage the internal components. Personally, I wrote my name on a sticker, put the sticker on the back of my iPod and covered the sticker with clear shipping tape. The only problem would be if the iPod gets wet, but that would damage the iPod.
- soogy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0AMAZING! And in other news, the iPod replaces all current forms of identification. You now require an iPod to drive a car and purchase alcohol (though preferably not at the same time).
Seriously, though. Who gives a damn? People get hit by cars all the time, not digg-worthy. Local news, sure. The fact that she got identified by her iPod? Wow! Amazing!
I mean, if she got identified by her phone, driver's license, credit card, fingerprints, DNA, PDA or if someone just knew her by face, WHO WOULD HAVE CARED? - JustMatt, on 10/12/2007, -7/+6That's not what the description says.
