- oookye, on 10/12/2007, -9/+84"I wouldn't even trade my first gen ipod for a Zune" - Leo Leporte
haha thats the best line - mytea, on 10/12/2007, -8/+56or they were worried about luggage weight restrictions on the flight home
- Berkana, on 10/12/2007, -2/+38MS made a gross error here. Seriously, what were they thinking? They might have gotten a trade-in if they offered to replace the entire library of purchased iTunes music and pay for all the obsolete accessories from trading in their iPods, but a straight swap of music loaded iPods? They've got to be smoking wacky tabaccy to think they'd get even a single trade in.
Even worse, they got an iPod show of force by asking everyone to bring theirs. How utterly sad and incompetent!
I heard that the iPod is shockingly popular amongst MS employees at the MS campus. I wonder how many MS minions have bought Zunes. - Berkana, on 10/12/2007, -5/+40Very well said. MS will pay astroturfers to fake a grass roots movement, but only their continued unethical treatment of other businesses, backstabing business partners for their own profit's sake, and making and selling shoddy products for such a long time could raise up a thick and wide spread lawn of grass-roots FUD from pissed off switchers, Mac-heads, and even OSS/Linux folks.
Steve Ballmer has said that the Zune battle will be a marathon, not a sprint. And if I remember correctly, Steve Jobs was interviewed in some news magazine a year or so before the Zune project was announced, and asked why he thinks the iPod's competitor ("Plays for Sure") sucked and how the iPod's competitors should go about killing the iPod. He basically recommended vertical integration and a closed platform--a straight imitation of the iPod's model. (As if the father of the iPod is going to teach his competitors how to kill his baby!) And you know what? MS took his "advice" and fell straight into this costly crap-trap; less than a year after that publicized interview. If the Zune project is a 5-10 year effort, Jobs will have bled MS of untold billions of dollars ('cause I just don't see how the Zune can possibly win or even break-even with the incompetence shown and the damage already done), and irreplaceable and priceless public image and credibility on the digital music front. MS' former partners will hate them for backstabbing (that includes hardware and music content partners), and the mess will leave the iPod+iTunes combo looking better than its competitors for a long time to come.
Brilliant stroke, Steve Jobs. Bravo. - NSResponder, on 10/12/2007, -6/+41If Apple had a full-time "black PR" team, professionals whose job it was to make MS look bad, they couldn't even begin to match the things the Evil Empire does to itself.
This one's not as big as the stock-photo switchers, but it's still a classic PR ***** by the Microserfs.

Having listened to it and Leo's radio show this past weekend (unlike you, obviously), he legitimately liked the Zune before he had a chance to use it. After using one at length, he didn't like it so much anymore. This has NOTHING to do with fanboys, but rather his own personal experience. If you'd have bothered to listen to either, you'd know.
But I guess that doesn't stop you from interjecting with your arrogant, insulting and ignorant 2 cents. - Ireland, on 10/12/2007, -12/+36The gym is more a Nano/Shuffle thing, right?
p.s. I went for a very long Zune in the toilet last night. - aristotle0dude, on 10/12/2007, -6/+29No kidding are they all pre-teens over there? They certainly do not appear to be the brightest bulbs.
They are just MP3 player people. Choose one, be happy with your choice and STFU. - adie, on 10/12/2007, -5/+26I wouldn't trade my iPod for two Zune's.
- grimreaperev, on 10/12/2007, -5/+26Wow, your right.. I went to those forums and everyone's ferociously defending the Zune in their ipod threads. I think MS hired some workers to pretend to be fanboys.
- klparrot, on 10/12/2007, -6/+26Remember that for you to be able to sell a Zune, someone has to want to buy it. Good luck with that.
- archurban, on 10/12/2007, -9/+28who wants that stupid brick? but this is funny. go to check out www.zunescene.com forum page. there is one ipod thread there. how much people are stupid to defend precious zune.
- williamdyer, on 10/12/2007, -3/+20Microsoft has a history of astroturfing Internet forums. That's why their credibility is low and people suspect them of doing it again.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -12/+28That big brown turd brick is the biggest electronics flop in a long time. I expect to see not even one Zune at the gym EVER.
- zang74, on 10/12/2007, -4/+19@n00bst3r
The first gen iPod was also 5 years ago.
5 Years ago a 1.3ghz Pentium 4 was state of the art. Now every new chip blows it out of the water. Comparing new technology to stuff a half-decade old isn't accurate or fair.
Leo is anything but a fanboy. He owns Apple machines and PC machines. He runs podcasts about both platforms, and regularly discusses both on his shows. It's pretty ignorant that people are calling him a fanboy simply because he legitimately gave an MS product a try (enthusiastically I might add) and didn't like it. - Rice, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14Hey, the podcast is called Buzz Out Loud! Not Buzzed!
In fact, it's one of my favourite podcasts, period. It reminds me of what twit used to do, but they do it every day.
And submitter, your grammar sucks. - cthellis, on 10/12/2007, -3/+17Who's starting the neighborhood flag-watch?
- DelMonte, on 10/12/2007, -2/+16gerbilthemonkey:
You're linking to an old article containing a rumor that was never confirmed. Microsoft wont trade your iTunes library for free. Not now and more than probably never.
This rumor was probably planted by MS itself so that people like you would fall for it and still believe many months after it's been confirmed that they wouldn't do it. - Quix, on 10/12/2007, -7/+21Wow, you KNOW Zune is a dud when 23r17i05o42n actually gets modded up.
P.S. Any bets on how many nutty posts flag564 makes on this thread? - Quix, on 10/12/2007, -5/+18"You haven't put flag564 on your ban list yet?"
Every time flag564 gets dugg down, an angel gets its wings.
I want to be able to do my part to help. - maninblac1, on 10/12/2007, -5/+16If i paid 250 or 350 bucks on an Ipod, (then obviously another 150-250 in rediculously over priced accessories like a $50 leather case, let's not for get hundreds of dollars in legal music) i wouldn't trade it until it was dead enough i could hammer nails with it for fun.
- zang74, on 10/12/2007, -3/+13"You show up to EVERY Zune thread to tell us how much it sucks and how stupid people are for buying it and those topics were NOT IN THE APPLE SECTION."
And again, QUOTE ME. Find a place where I called people stupid for buying one, or how much it sucks. If you're gonna put such words in my mouth, I want you to prove it.
PS: Running a quick search for "Zune" on Digg turns up almost 300 stories in the last 7 days, and that's not including buried ones. See:
http://www.digg.com/search?s=zune
I've commented on only 13 in the last 3 months, see:
http://www.digg.com/users/zang74/commented?s=zune
You sir, are a blatant liar. I've just proven you wrong. You owe me an apology.
"This topic was on the front page when I found it, so spare me the "this was in the Apple community" excuse. Calling me a troll has as much effect as calling me a poo poo head."
Look up at your address bar. Do you see what follows "www.digg.com"? It's "/apple". This story is in the apple topics section. You can BLOCK these stories, y'know, and they'll never show up on your front page. Besides which, many of the Apple stories you comment on never have the diggs to appear on the front page, meaning you SEEK THEM OUT. - Quix, on 10/12/2007, -3/+13flag564 seems to have lost a lot of his Zune steam. Which is a BAD sign for Microsoft. He reached a delirious fever pitch of Zune frenzy at launch, then sorta faded away.
When not even the most dedicated Microsoft acolytes/Apple-haters like flag care about the Zune anymore, you know the thing is in big trouble... - zang74, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11@flag564
Flawed in that their methodology was lousy. Ever take a stats class? - geekdreams, on 10/12/2007, -3/+13The difference is, Microsoft DOES pay fanboys to hype their products, and Apple doesn't.
http://www.google.com/search?q=%22cool%20zune%20kids%22 - moofer, on 10/12/2007, -4/+14This site is such a joke. It's a complete MS plant. If you look at the date in the metadata section of the whois record for this domain, you'll see:
Web Site Title: Zune MP3 Player
Meta Description: Zune MP3 by Microsoft is iPod killer for Christmas 2006. Get the latest info on Zune.
Meta Keywords: zune, zune forum, zunephone, zune accessories, zune forums, zune mp3
Data as of: 14-Jun-2005
June 14, 2005? This is like a year before the zune was even made public. That type of information can only come from within M$. They've worked very hard to make this site look home-grown, but sorry. It's a plant. - zang74, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12"Try actually listening to the mac podcast on TWIT.tv. It is seriously a hour long infomercial for all things Apple"
a) You do realize that TWiT.tv has Dell as a sponsor, right?
b) He runs also a podcast called "Windows Weekly". Is that an infomercial for MS, or perhaps Leo's just selectively biased towards promoting Apple (despite having a pro-windows podcast).
My gawd, do you look anything up, or is it all spouted out of your ass? - zang74, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12"I dont care what you buy. But if you showed up on PS3 topics telling everyone that the PS3 is a ***** brick or that it sucks or that you are being paid by Sony to even talk about it, what do you expect the reaction will be?"
So, does that apply to your showing up in Apple topics, calling Steve Jobs gay, cracking jokes about iPods dying in 6 months and dissing anything you can about the Mac or iPod? By the way, this is in the Apple section, not gadgets or tech news.
You are a troll. No matter how much you may justify your actions to yourself, you are in an Apple community, dissing Apple, tossing around personal insults, and making inaccurate and blanket statements. Go ahead, tell me the fanboys did it first, but you're still coming across as acting like a child. - niczar, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10"Anything I bought through iTunes I can easily convert to the Zune."
Easily? I thought the only way was by burning it to a CD and then ripping it back into a Zune. - halleyscomet, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8@blflm
Too bad you weren't at the event. Microsoft would have gotten at least one taker.
I think the problem isn't so much the trade in being a bad idea, as the forum. They really needed to do something to attract people who WANTED to make the trade. I'm sure there are plenty of people with dead / dying iPods that are out of warranty who would be happy to get a free replacement. That's not a knock against Apple, just a statement of fact about the nature of portable media devices. They wear out over time.
Let's not forget that there are utilities that will automate the process of ripping your iTunes purchases to a different format (I recommend something lossless, as you're already going to have a quality hit from the first round of lossy compression). I've got a program on my Mac that uses a CD-RW to automate the process of burning and audio CD and ripping it to another format. - Annix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Flag... was that not the study where they showed the Zune and "other competitive MP3 players"? Not specifically mentioning the iPod?
Don't get me wrong, I'm in no way a fanboy.. just if it's the study I'm thinking of, it WAS flawed because it wasn't on fair and open level of WHAT they were comparing.. - zang74, on 10/12/2007, -4/+12@flag564:
"You see, they dont see what they do as anything short of virtuous. they feel a blanket right as Apple users to trash other companies products and services. People on a board that actually like a particular brand are ripped as being "paid" to say what they are saying. Get it?
But oddly enough, the oh so confident ipod users seem to cant help but troll that board."
Pot. Kettle. Black.
How old are you? FOUR? - Timit, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11"mine has lived in my pocket with keys/phone since release day and is 100% unmarked."
With keys? unmarked? I'll believe you when I see it. - Gr8Pumpkin, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11In the voice of Nelson- Ha- Ha
- SourWorm, on 10/12/2007, -9/+17I choose you Pikachu! ...... errr whoops
- martinnguyen90, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10Although self-professed Apple/iPod fanboys such as myself will vouch rabidly for almost anything that comes out of Apple there is actually many reasons why the iPod is as popular as it is; simplicity, elegance and intuitiveness. These are things which I do not see in the Zune. Microsoft is an old company that is trying to learn new tricks, trying to learn how to be 'cool'. The gloomy ethos surrounding the company will be hard to shake.
This leads me to believe that the Zune will not ultimately become a major player in the market. Don't get me wrong, Microsoft make some great products (e.g. XBOX) but what is a Zune but a wireless enabled Toshiba Gigabeat (a great player by the way), albeit more locked down (both in DRM and non-existant functions).
The again, competition is good and it may make Apple innovate again. - zang74, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7@flag564
"Oh Im sorry, they are tied. And to be exact, OSX falls behind win2000 and maybe even Win98."
Wait, shall we start divvying this by machines now? The number of Win98 Dell machines outnumbers the WinME Sony machines by a landslide.
Frankly, I was using the term "Windows" on a larger scale. Odds are, 99% of machines only have one version of Windows running on them. So, dividing that up into individual version numbers makes little difference in the overall number of "Windows Users". But, I guess if you were in dire need of some talking point, you found one, however useless it was.
"According to you, if they are not FIRST, then they are a FAILURE."
Quote me flag. Go ahead, find a post where I said that. Go on! Double-dog dare you!
'"Why are you, Flag, so afraid of Apple succeeding at something?"
I ask that about you fankids and the Zune all the time.'
You didn't answer the question, flag. - panique, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7@naio21 - "Please prove it is bogus. Is there any proof to backup your assumption?"
Well, if 58% of iPod users actually DID buy a Zune, there would be none on the shelves. - torifile, on 10/12/2007, -8/+14In case my site goes down (which it will if this hits the front page), I'm mirroring it on my .mac webspace. http://homepage.mac.com/torifile/.Public/zune.mp3 .
- MakinBacon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Why wouldn't you... then you can trade songs with yourself (since there are no other Zune users to trade with).
- zang74, on 10/12/2007, -4/+10@flag564
"He is polite on the Windows podcast at best. Listening to it every episode he is mostly skeptical of everything regarding MS. And It took forever for the thing to be added to the TWIT line-up."
It took forever, that constitutes fanboy bias?
As for Dell jokes, he was saying a few negative things about Dell on the last podcast.
Again, look things up before you make blanket statements, you troll. - DelMonte, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9The title cannot be inaccurate, it has a question mark at the end :)
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7He's still talking about that bogus '58% of ipod owners would buy a zune' survey.
- stylerm, on 10/12/2007, -4/+9To hack the iPod to work as an external hard drive I have to click the option box to use it as an external hard drive.
- Quix, on 10/12/2007, -7/+12Looks like someone let flag564 and naio21 out of their cages in Redmond.
- panique, on 10/12/2007, -7/+12@"P.S. Any bets on how many nutty posts flag564 makes on this thread?"
You haven't put flag564 on your ban list yet? - geekdreams, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8"But all the ipod related sites, Apple rumor sites are just completely legit?"
Well, yeah. Apple even sued a whole bunch of them for leaking trade secrets and they STILL happily report on all things Cupertino. Unless you're saying that was a ploy to cover up some shady deal between Apple and Think Secret? - zang74, on 10/12/2007, -4/+9@flag564
Are you STILL quoting that flawed study? Geez dude. Find some legit research where they're not just showing pictures, but actually asking people which they would buy (without a presupposition of what options are available).
And most of all, find me a survey that was done AFTER the pricing, the wi-fi restrictions, the lack of PlaysForSure support were announced and the Zune was even released.
12 Months ago, I'm willing to guess a good number of people would have chosen a PS3 over an Xbox 360. Now that it's released, things are looking mighty different. - MateyO, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Compound your statement with:
Microsoft has YET to stop monkeying with it's DRM. Apple's DRM'd music still continues to work. -
