- kevinmotel, on 10/12/2007, -19/+6well it was only a matter of time. now we wait to see will it be out before holiday shopping season? or are they waiting for spring 07? or is this a long term plan for back to school 07?
- iWasHere, on 10/12/2007, -18/+13Let's hope for the holidays.
- DanAtkinson, on 10/12/2007, -14/+30http://www.duggmirror.com
- PathDaemon, on 10/12/2007, -21/+8Maybe, but it would be awesome if this were utter BS thrown in by an Apple employee who knew he was about to get fired and wanted to stir up the tech community.
- PathDaemon, on 10/12/2007, -6/+71It looks like this could just be bad grammar and an accidental release (note the red edit bars in the PDF).
The note might be reworded like this:
"Note: Linking to photos and videos is supported only for 5th generation iPods running iPod Software version 1.2 or later; All other Notes feature capabilities described in this document are supported for older iPods, beginning with the touch-wheel models." - PathDaemon, on 10/12/2007, -4/+18NOTE (in case my last comment was being dugg down from a misunderstanding):
My point came from the fact that the "advanced notes capabilities" are already avail. in several generations of iPod. - willcode4beer, on 10/12/2007, -14/+7Does it have a 15 steps alignment process?
- ross., on 10/12/2007, -7/+2Even if Apple did mean to say "Touch Wheel" (which they never call the Scroll Wheel anyway), this at least shows Apple has the touch screen iPods on their minds us much as us geeks do!
- malhtiek, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15Or just tell people to look at Page 10 of this pdf
http://developer.apple.com/hardwaredrivers/ipod/iPodNotesFeatureGuideCB.pdf - zonk3r, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9I'm no expert regarding WordPress but jeeze it seems like every site that uses it and gets dugg drops like a fly in about 5 minutes... Is this a WordPress problem, crappy server config or what?
- hiyel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7I agree with PathDaemon.
Look at the logic structure of the paragraph:
...photos and videos supported ONLY for 5th generation... ; ...all other features are supported beginning with the touch-screen models.
With such a structure in the second part, it only make sense to mention a model that is OLDER than the 5th generation, not a newer model. So I think "touch-screen" should have been "touch-wheel", meaning the 2nd generation ipods... - GuyHersh, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4The linking PDF that this link links you to, has been changed by apple. It no longer says Touch Screen, but says touch wheel.
Digg this story down so we don't put out more rumors.
"Digg.com, where 68% of internet rumors originate" - srg13, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@zonk3r: I think it's usually because the SQL server has a limit on the maximum number of connections at one time, and there are more users than this limit.
- n0yd, on 10/12/2007, -11/+2Site is already down...
Ok nevermind, it's just going REALLY slow.- duke_nate, on 10/12/2007, -18/+4"Directly confirmed by apple", with a dead web page. Thanks fanboy.
- QueenOfSwords, on 10/12/2007, -12/+4It got Steved :) that just helps confirm it.
- Darrelc, on 10/12/2007, -18/+3Great, I just baught a black 80gb one. First Ipod purchase (Had loads of mp3 players though) Looks good so far :D
- Darrelc, on 10/12/2007, -13/+5I was joking, I don't need the latest tech. Only reason I got this is cos I got a refund on my old mp3 player and I wanted a large one, and the black 80gb one was the highest capacity.
I know for a fact if I got a full screen touch Ipod the day I baught it I'd launch my keys in my pocket and scratch the hell out of it. - Braxo, on 10/12/2007, -8/+14bought instead of baught, usually spelling doesn't bother me but here it is.
- Clemson, on 10/12/2007, -8/+12@radink
Main Entry: 1ob·so·lete
Pronunciation: "äb-s&-'lEt, 'äb-s&-"
Function: adjective
Etymology: Latin obsoletus, from past participle of obsolescere to grow old, become disused, perhaps from ob- toward + solEre to be accustomed
1: no longer in use or no longer useful
I would favor the opinion that DVD has rendered VHS obsolete (though some would argue), but in no way does a next gen iPod w/ larger capacity and / or newer features render the current gen iPod obsolete... they both rely on digital music in the same format. - Slovenian6474, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Obsolete as in your ipod doesn't play music anymore?
- Darrelc, on 10/12/2007, -13/+5I was joking, I don't need the latest tech. Only reason I got this is cos I got a refund on my old mp3 player and I wanted a large one, and the black 80gb one was the highest capacity.

But it's in French and I see nothing about a Touch Screen iPod- felchdonkey, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9A) The link you entered is in Spanish. If all the Spanish looked too much like French to you, the word "española" at the top might have been a clue.
B) The reference to a touchscreen iPod is in the text excerpted from the Apple document. It's highlighted, just in case someone comes along and says "I see nothing about a Touch Screen iPod"

This either means that the username and password information in your wp-config.php file is incorrect or we can't contact the database server at localhost. This could mean your host's database server is down.
Are you sure you have the correct username and password?
Are you sure that you have typed the correct hostname?

I keep selecting 'Rock' but the iPod shows republican.

- IcyStorm, on 10/12/2007, -2/+24http://duggmirror.com/apple/Touch_screen_iPod_directly_confirmed_by_Apple/
It's basically that. If you want it directly from Apple, http://developer.apple.com/hardwaredrivers/ipod/iPodNotesFeatureGuideCB.pdf
But look at iPod Notes Concept -> Overview -> Advanced Uses of Notes.- kapowaz, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8FWIW, the section in the PDF reads:
"Note: Linking to photos and videos is supported only for 5th generation iPods running iPod Software version 1.2 or later. All other Notes feature capabilities described in this document are supported for iPod models with display screens, beginning with the touch-screen models." - jkoke, on 10/12/2007, -5/+6I think this is a typo. The way the passage reads it's saying that the advanced features (photo and video linking) are available for 5G and later iPods. The basic features are available for any iPod with a display screen (ie, older iPods) -- don't know why they said "beginning with the touch-screen models" but they are obviously referring to older iPods, not yet-to-be-released ones.
- jkoke, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13Upon further analysis, I believe the specific typo is that they meant to type "touch-wheel" -- that would make sense as the first touch-wheel iPod was the 2G.
- kwojniak, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13@jkoke
The touch-wheel is referring to the 3G, which was the first true touch-based iPod. The 1G and 2G still had mechanical parts. And the 3G was the first iPod to support Notes. So it seems like a typo to me as well. - kwojniak, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2So I've buried this as inaccurate, because there's no way this isn't a typo - it just wouldn't make sense at all.
- jkoke, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Thanks for the clarification -- I was grouping the 2 "scroll wheel" models as the first gen. The first "touch wheel" iPod was released in 07/2002. See http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=61688, which is a great article for identifying the different models that have been released.
- kwojniak, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Just to settle the confusion on which iPod the PDF is referring to, see this article: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=61905 - it clearly states that the iPod Software 2.0, which supports Notes, works on the iPods with Dock connector only, which is the 3rd gen iPod - NOT the touch wheel, which is what Apple calls the 2G iPod :)
- ljfrench, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0I agree that it *could* be a typo. However, I'm swayed by the date on the document: 20 Oct 2006.
Oh, and the fact that I really want a touch-screen iPod! - ohgoodness, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I'm looking at the pdf right now and I'm seeing this:
"Note: Linking to photos and videos is supported only for 5th generation iPods running iPod Software version 1.2 or later. All other Notes feature capabilities described in this document are supported for iPod models beginning with third-generation iPod (dock connector) models with touch wheel."
and the revision history says the last revision was yesterday: "Updated to clarify supported models and to fix minor graphics and text errors."
- kapowaz, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8FWIW, the section in the PDF reads:
- naden, on 10/12/2007, -31/+9Ohh you mean the wireless feature where:
- you can't sync your music wirelessly
- you can't browse a music store from your player wirelessly
- you can only send files to Zune players
- any songs you send to anyone is playable only 3 times or 3 days regardless of whether the song is DRM or not
- any person who receives songs wirelessly can't resend them to anyone else
Yeh Zune will definitely pwn iPod. Hold on whilst I hold my breath.- jkoke, on 10/12/2007, -4/+11@naden
What in the name of all that's holy are you rambling about? No one has mentioned the Zune except you. - naden, on 10/12/2007, -12/+3Man that is seriously creepy .. someone did post about how this was crap because ATMs have touchscreens and Zune was going to pwn iPods because of the wireless feature.
I think i mightve just found a bug in Digg or that fifth tab of acid. - patience, on 10/12/2007, -5/+1@naden: You are not imagining stuff. I withdrew that comment about ATMs in the last 2 seconds because it was dumb.
- jkoke, on 10/12/2007, -4/+11@naden
- Detro, on 10/12/2007, -19/+6Apple, iPod, confirmed = Instant front page, no matter what.
- PathDaemon, on 10/12/2007, -9/+1Yeah, cause when a long-time rumor has been confirmed by the company it's directed at, that's news.
- chickenselects, on 10/12/2007, -7/+2now i need a release date and price.
- andymac1, on 10/12/2007, -5/+0Man, that site totally crashed hard.
- yensed, on 10/12/2007, -10/+1I sure hope this comes out before 2007. I've been using iTunes for about a year and have spent a lot of money on songs(I'm 16, so 212 songs is a lot of $ to me). My 4thGen iPod died a month ago, and I want to be able to watch video on the go(On a decent size screen). I'm able to Un-DRM my iTunes purchases at this point in time, and if by December 10th a new iPod doesn't come out, I'll be getting a Zune and taking my songs with me.
- sjbdallas, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Dude, i think it's a mistake to by the 1st gen of anything. Whether you wait for the touch-screen or buy a zune you're taking a huge chance on putting up with all the possible issues. Don't you figure all those guys with scratched up 1st gen nanos wish they would have waited and got the 2nd gen nanos? Try to imagine how yucked up a touch screen will be after a few weeks of heavy use. I say wait for the 2nd gen touch screen ipod or the 2nd gen zune (if there ever is one). Replace your 4th gen with an ipod video, they're great.
- thebranca18, on 10/12/2007, -4/+0If you want to unDRM them, just get a CD-RW, and burn them all to CD and then rip them from the CD back into iTunes. That eliminates the DRM. It's annoying though.
- undersky, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4I know you are only 16 and probably not very smart, but please use your parentheses (plural) properly next time so that you leave a space between the last word and the open parenthesis (singular) as I have made it clear in this example.
- Pliep, on 10/12/2007, -0/+20INACCURATE!
It's a typo. It should read "touch-wheel" models, which offer support for notes but not with video of images.
If there really was a 6G touch screen iPod in the making, it would not have LESS features than the 5G would it?- TwinSigma, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Fewer features, not "less features."
- jkoke, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Agreed, Pliep. It's a typo. See the comment thread above under IcyStorm.
- flag564, on 10/12/2007, -8/+2Confirmed?
You have a document that maybe came from Apple, posted on a blog and dumped on Digg.
But who cares? It's just one more episode in the sorry saga of the mythical "true video ipod" - halik, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3Tagged as innacurate and wishful/dumb thinking. Anyone that's ever owned a touch screen pda will tell you it's a stupid idea that Apple won't implement - to make it work, the LCD has to have the glass EXPOSED, which would make the whole device very very fragile. There's no way Steve Jobs will approve a device that needs a flip cover (or something like that) to be pocketable.
I'm certain Apple will release big screen ipods eventually, but the screen will be behind plastic like all the other ones and the navigation will most likely be in the bezel (much like the drawings that were on digg earlier this month.- collywolly, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2"to make it work, the LCD has to have the glass EXPOSED, which would make the whole device very very fragile. There's no way Steve Jobs will approve a device that needs a flip cover (or something like that) to be pocketable."
Errrm. Didn't they already do that with the Nano and the easy scratch screens. Ok stupid socks were the solution to that rather than a flip cover..... - halik, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Scratched plastic is a minor issue compared to masses of people with cracked ipod screens. Think about it - if you have an ipod with 4" touch screen, that's *a lot* of exposed area. Put that In your pocket with your house keys and you will break the glass the first time you sit down. Unless you have some kind of hard cover case (flip or otherwise), an ipod like that wouldn't be durable at all.
On the other hand, if you take a 4in screen and put it under 2-3mm of clear lexan, it's a relatively durable set up.
I love how the fanbois dugg me down, rather than arguing my points... if you want bulsh!t, please navigate to macrumors.com - stmiller, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2My cell phone is okay in a pocket with keys all day. No scratches. So it can be done.
- halik, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Shens,
I've had 3 diffferent pda phones (two verizon, one sprint) and without thosse touch screen films get scrached up like no other. Without a screen protector the thing would surface would get scuffed up in about a week (with nothing else in my pocket). Keys will most definitely mark the screen.
- collywolly, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2"to make it work, the LCD has to have the glass EXPOSED, which would make the whole device very very fragile. There's no way Steve Jobs will approve a device that needs a flip cover (or something like that) to be pocketable."
- mrch0mp3rs, on 10/12/2007, -6/+0You guys are missing the point:
"...Furthermore, you can also customize the iPod interface..."
It's not just the confirmation of the touch-screen iPod is in the intent. You can create custom GUIs for presentation/interaction software. Which means if you have an authoring tool that exports to QuickTime, you can probably have interactive movies playable on your iPod. The impacts on mobile training/learning could be big, as well as homebrewing games and other apps for the iPod.
So... imagine if it fully supports Quicktime's more interactive features... like how it can play Flash content. That'd be pretty stellar.- thashiz, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1You can already do that:
http://www.engadget.com/2004/12/08/how-to-hacking-the-ipod-firmware-changing-the-graphics/
- thashiz, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1You can already do that:
- amosconi, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Ask Jkoke told, this is just a typo in the PDF documentation.
Somebody at apple wrote "touch-screen" instead of "touch-wheel" and machiabelly just copied the text from the guy at pomcast.com that just condensed the original post in www.ipod-fun.de.
None of them actually read and understood what the document is saying...
Please bury the article… Never saw such carelessness in reporting information... - ajck, on 10/12/2007, -8/+3The only thing I'm confirming here is that Wordpress isn't very good at holding up under any sort of load. Remind me not to use that software on any website ever.
- thespace, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4nothing to do with wordpress specifically
- darobu, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Agreed...It's a typo. Buried as inaccurate.Do your journalistic duty and bury it as well.
- Cander, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I agree with the comments that this is an obvious typo.
- hella81, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1I can never get wordpress pages to load when I click them through here, why is that?
- guytoronto, on 10/12/2007, -8/+2I want every single to person to ever post, report, link to, or whisper in a dark room about a touch screen iPod to die a slow, miserable death in the fiery pits of hell.
When Apple announces it, then it's news. Until then, shutup! - shiftless, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Boy uh... that sure was convincing... >:[
- SaintStryfe, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0Isn't it obvious, Apple hates touch screens, same as when John Kerry makes a flub in a joke, he hates troops!
- markgl, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3i'm waiting for the 60 inch widescreen iPod.
- thespace, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Cool, so the notes that you can create in the new Email program in the next OS you can sync to your ipod, niiiiiiice
- kwojniak, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The Notes feature of the iPod has been around since the 3rd gen iPod. It's nothing new - however the linking to images and videos IS new and requires a 5G iPod with firmware 1.2 or greater.
- leonbev, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2At this point, it looks like even Apple itself is having fun putting Easter eggs into their product documentation in order to throw off the Apple fan-boys on new product announcements :)
- dimplemonkey, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4Uh, Apple...your Freudian slip is showing! ;-)
- rossbrown, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1This just seems like a bad idea. I mean, look at how discolored the touch WHEEL gets after using an iPod for so long.
- sdbarker, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3This is not confirmation that they're making this supposed touch screen iPod. Confirmation is:
"Oh, and one more thing, we're making a touch screen iPod." -- Steve Jobs
Until then, it's all speculation. - Rapter09, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0I highly doubt Apple will be making a touch-screen ipod for a very long time. Having enough problems with people ruining their LCDs and voiding their warranty by throwing it in their backpacks and purses filled with books, pencils, loose change, lipstick and who-knows-what-else.
The general public is NOT ready for an touchable screen. - dandiemer, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1it was revised 10-20-06, so i doubt it was a typo.
- amosconi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3it's all well and possible that the typo was introduced on 10-20-06, then, when that paragraph had been added to specify the new features of newer ipods...
Don't you think is strange that a video ipod would not fall in the Category of "5th generation and newer"?
- amosconi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3it's all well and possible that the typo was introduced on 10-20-06, then, when that paragraph had been added to specify the new features of newer ipods...
- daveyt, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Any one else NOT want a video ipod? I do. I just want to play mp3's and have a nice little menu. My 3G ipod is going strong 3 years later. The battery has crapped out but i got it replaced for £20 ($30) and now it should last another 3 or 4 (batteries have improved). I love my ipod and I especially love the accessories - not one of which would work were I to upgrade to a 5 or 6G (future) in most cases. The price you pay for a new IPOD is probably +£100 or so once you factor in spare adapters, cases, itrip blah blah. I think £20 for another few years is a bargain. I use it everyday, only my Nokia 6310i (best phone in the world, bar none) is as good.
In the last 10 years we have gotten used to our electronic goods only being good for- felchdonkey, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I agree - I would hope there would be a "classic" iPod available for a much lower price, and a premium that had the widescreen and all the bells & whistles.
- ElMoselYEE, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0only Microsoft releases basic, basic premium, ultimate, and enterprise editions of their stuff.
- SpoBo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1A touchscreen ipod with note taking capabilities would be something I'll HAVE TO buy. I just started saving up :p omfg lol .. this will be massive. I'm not going to buy a Wii and just keep saving up for this baby :D mwuhahaha. Just imagine having this thing with you anywhere you go. It'll be easy to take notes, explain stuff to other people, easier for other people to explain stuff to you. Absolutely awesome :D Who knows there'll be an application that I can sue for looking up Kanji or stuff like that. w00t.
- ThreatQuad, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2http://developer.apple.com/hardwaredrivers/ipod/iPodNotesFeatureGuideCB.pdf
Check out page 10 again. Seems as if it has been updated today. I don't see any mention of a touch-screen ipod anymore.- Heiliger, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Today at 1:53 PM, to be exact (Reading the file's created/modified info).
- g30ph, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I was just thinking, "There's not nearly enough fingerprints on my ipod, if only I had more reason to touch it...."
Seriously I think I have OCD about fingerprints on shiny surfaces. - corndogup10, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2you know what really pisses me off...? they bring out a new one every year... frankly i dont have the money to get a new ipod with a new gimmick every year...
there should be some kind of upgrade plan for ipods- LilBoyLuver, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2LOL Welcome the business world.. Thats like saying I hate how Dodge updtates the vehicles every year.
- LilBoyLuver, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I love how often the Apple rumors contradict, don't get me wrong I am a huge Apple fan and would love to see any of these products come out but common. The story was last week that the touchscreen was out and the touch bezel was in.
And if we are talking about the iPhone's legitimacy one has to look no further than the cingular-Napster music service that was launched today. - TheJas, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2What is everyone waiting for? Why has this not been marked as inaccurate?
- dpknc84, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I marked it as such, but there's too many idiots on here who just are digg happy and don't read.
- Iccanui, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1To the typo comment.
It might be a typo or it could be apple generated hype to hurt zune sales. More so, hype for a product coming. If its a typo, what is a typo then. Mental slip? Why would a apple employee slip up and type something they dont have.
Ewww the conspiricy theories.
If a touch screen ipod isnt coming ten apple isnt listening to the public that is ravenous for this product. I will be dispapointed in apples inovation if they dont deliver this and will move then to the " out of touch " catagorey. Mind you im a apple fanboi. I got a ipod and am saving for a mac book pro and currently run a hackintash ( OS X on a Dell.. for education purposes ). Which is why i would be disapointed. - Dihuko, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Regardless, we know a touch screen iPod is coming very soon given all the patents over the past few months.
- avocade, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1typo. touch-wheel, not touch-screen. interesting freudian slip by _someone_ over at apple, though :)
- DelMonte, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The person that wrote this may not be aware of an actual touch-screen iPod at Apple, but is simply exposed to the same incessant rumors as we are, hence the Freudian Slip.
- Justin6512, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2again,
I'll believe it when I see it - rspeed, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Read the whole sentence. They're talking about features that have been around since the second generation (AKA touch-wheel) iPods. The previous iPod had a control wheel that actually turned..
- DelMonte, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Yeah, I believed this "confirmation" for 2 seconds, the time it took me to re-read the whole sentence and see how it wouldn't make sense anyway.
- golddigga, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1apparently apple has changed the pdf now
- bufbarnaby, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Who cares...Cingular opens it`s download service and MSFT embraces Linux are much bigger/important stories.
- theprez, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The title should've had a question mark at the end so I wouldn't feel the need to bury it as inaccurate. Including the word "directly" would make one think someone at Apple actually said it at a press conference or something.
- coder_cotton, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Note: Linking to photos and videos is supported only for 5th generation iPods running iPod Software version 1.2 or later.
