- lebe0024, on 10/12/2007, -7/+91DRM? I have two ipods, and I only use mp3's with it. Are you referring to iTunes?
- PathDaemon, on 10/12/2007, -6/+71It looks like this could just be bad grammar and an accidental release (note the red edit bars in the PDF).
The note might be reworded like this:
"Note: Linking to photos and videos is supported only for 5th generation iPods running iPod Software version 1.2 or later; All other Notes feature capabilities described in this document are supported for older iPods, beginning with the touch-wheel models." - tsaxer, on 10/12/2007, -9/+56While I respect his/her decision, I am getting tired of posters daring us to dig down because they have a 'controversial' opinion. It's the same as someone saying "well I'm not very good" before they sing; they're just trying to save face.
- willcode4beer, on 10/12/2007, -3/+50Stupid touchscreen.
I keep selecting 'Rock' but the iPod shows republican. - Scottish, on 10/12/2007, -24/+50Digging you down not because your point is illegitimate, but because you phrased it so pathetically. Speak maturely, including proper punctuation and capitalization, and maybe you'll get dugg up next time.
- mark1372, on 10/12/2007, -11/+35So you'll play protected WMA but not protected AAC? Do you think that MP3s are gonna suddenly stop working? What a stupid statement. Maybe had you said you'll never buy DRM-protected music it would be more comprehensible.
- IcyStorm, on 10/12/2007, -2/+24http://duggmirror.com/apple/Touch_screen_iPod_directly_confirmed_by_Apple/
It's basically that. If you want it directly from Apple, http://developer.apple.com/hardwaredrivers/ipod/iPodNotesFeatureGuideCB.pdf
But look at iPod Notes Concept -> Overview -> Advanced Uses of Notes. - Pliep, on 10/12/2007, -0/+20INACCURATE!
It's a typo. It should read "touch-wheel" models, which offer support for notes but not with video of images.
If there really was a 6G touch screen iPod in the making, it would not have LESS features than the 5G would it? - DanAtkinson, on 10/12/2007, -14/+30http://www.duggmirror.com

"DRM? I have two ipods, and I only use mp3's with it. Are you referring to iTunes?"
Thanks for pointing that out -- I'm tired of people bashing the iPod because they claim it only works w/ Apple's DRM'ed files. People seem to forget the fact that the iPod pre-dated the music store, and was created to play MP3s.
As a minor modification to your point, however, iTunes ALSO handles TONS of un-DRM'ed media files -- the real point is that the iTunes *Store* uses DRM. iTunes even pre-dates the iPod, originating from a program that was called SoundJam. After Apple hired it's developer, SoundJam just went away. - malhtiek, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15Or just tell people to look at Page 10 of this pdf
http://developer.apple.com/hardwaredrivers/ipod/iPodNotesFeatureGuideCB.pdf - PathDaemon, on 10/12/2007, -4/+18NOTE (in case my last comment was being dugg down from a misunderstanding):
My point came from the fact that the "advanced notes capabilities" are already avail. in several generations of iPod. - jkoke, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13Upon further analysis, I believe the specific typo is that they meant to type "touch-wheel" -- that would make sense as the first touch-wheel iPod was the 2G.
- kwojniak, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13@jkoke
The touch-wheel is referring to the 3G, which was the first true touch-based iPod. The 1G and 2G still had mechanical parts. And the 3G was the first iPod to support Notes. So it seems like a typo to me as well. - hiyel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7I agree with PathDaemon.
Look at the logic structure of the paragraph:
...photos and videos supported ONLY for 5th generation... ; ...all other features are supported beginning with the touch-screen models.
With such a structure in the second part, it only make sense to mention a model that is OLDER than the 5th generation, not a newer model. So I think "touch-screen" should have been "touch-wheel", meaning the 2nd generation ipods... - jkoke, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Agreed, Pliep. It's a typo. See the comment thread above under IcyStorm.
- jkoke, on 10/12/2007, -4/+11@naden
What in the name of all that's holy are you rambling about? No one has mentioned the Zune except you. - kapowaz, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8FWIW, the section in the PDF reads:
"Note: Linking to photos and videos is supported only for 5th generation iPods running iPod Software version 1.2 or later. All other Notes feature capabilities described in this document are supported for iPod models with display screens, beginning with the touch-screen models." - Braxo, on 10/12/2007, -8/+14bought instead of baught, usually spelling doesn't bother me but here it is.
- felchdonkey, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9A) The link you entered is in Spanish. If all the Spanish looked too much like French to you, the word "española" at the top might have been a clue.
B) The reference to a touchscreen iPod is in the text excerpted from the Apple document. It's highlighted, just in case someone comes along and says "I see nothing about a Touch Screen iPod" - zonk3r, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9I'm no expert regarding WordPress but jeeze it seems like every site that uses it and gets dugg drops like a fly in about 5 minutes... Is this a WordPress problem, crappy server config or what?
- g30ph, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I was just thinking, "There's not nearly enough fingerprints on my ipod, if only I had more reason to touch it...."
Seriously I think I have OCD about fingerprints on shiny surfaces. - darobu, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Agreed...It's a typo. Buried as inaccurate.Do your journalistic duty and bury it as well.
- Clemson, on 10/12/2007, -8/+12@radink
Main Entry: 1ob·so·lete
Pronunciation: "äb-s&-'lEt, 'äb-s&-"
Function: adjective
Etymology: Latin obsoletus, from past participle of obsolescere to grow old, become disused, perhaps from ob- toward + solEre to be accustomed
1: no longer in use or no longer useful
I would favor the opinion that DVD has rendered VHS obsolete (though some would argue), but in no way does a next gen iPod w/ larger capacity and / or newer features render the current gen iPod obsolete... they both rely on digital music in the same format. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6So, user error doesn't matter? If you had backed up, you probably could have saved your music by not loading the updated iTunes. Call me crazy, but it seems like shared responsibility.
- rspeed, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Read the whole sentence. They're talking about features that have been around since the second generation (AKA touch-wheel) iPods. The previous iPod had a control wheel that actually turned..
- amosconi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3it's all well and possible that the typo was introduced on 10-20-06, then, when that paragraph had been added to specify the new features of newer ipods...
Don't you think is strange that a video ipod would not fall in the Category of "5th generation and newer"? - ohgoodness, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I'm looking at the pdf right now and I'm seeing this:
"Note: Linking to photos and videos is supported only for 5th generation iPods running iPod Software version 1.2 or later. All other Notes feature capabilities described in this document are supported for iPod models beginning with third-generation iPod (dock connector) models with touch wheel."
and the revision history says the last revision was yesterday: "Updated to clarify supported models and to fix minor graphics and text errors." - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4nothing to do with wordpress specifically
- dpknc84, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I marked it as such, but there's too many idiots on here who just are digg happy and don't read.
- Heiliger, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Today at 1:53 PM, to be exact (Reading the file's created/modified info).
- Slovenian6474, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Obsolete as in your ipod doesn't play music anymore?
- LilBoyLuver, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2LOL Welcome the business world.. Thats like saying I hate how Dodge updtates the vehicles every year.
- ThreatQuad, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2http://developer.apple.com/hardwaredrivers/ipod/iPodNotesFeatureGuideCB.pdf
Check out page 10 again. Seems as if it has been updated today. I don't see any mention of a touch-screen ipod anymore. - TheJas, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2What is everyone waiting for? Why has this not been marked as inaccurate?
- sjbdallas, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Dude, i think it's a mistake to by the 1st gen of anything. Whether you wait for the touch-screen or buy a zune you're taking a huge chance on putting up with all the possible issues. Don't you figure all those guys with scratched up 1st gen nanos wish they would have waited and got the 2nd gen nanos? Try to imagine how yucked up a touch screen will be after a few weeks of heavy use. I say wait for the 2nd gen touch screen ipod or the 2nd gen zune (if there ever is one). Replace your 4th gen with an ipod video, they're great.
- corndogup10, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2you know what really pisses me off...? they bring out a new one every year... frankly i dont have the money to get a new ipod with a new gimmick every year...
there should be some kind of upgrade plan for ipods - kwojniak, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Just to settle the confusion on which iPod the PDF is referring to, see this article: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=61905 - it clearly states that the iPod Software 2.0, which supports Notes, works on the iPods with Dock connector only, which is the 3rd gen iPod - NOT the touch wheel, which is what Apple calls the 2G iPod :)
- kwojniak, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The Notes feature of the iPod has been around since the 3rd gen iPod. It's nothing new - however the linking to images and videos IS new and requires a 5G iPod with firmware 1.2 or greater.
- Justin6512, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2again,
I'll believe it when I see it - sdbarker, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3This is not confirmation that they're making this supposed touch screen iPod. Confirmation is:
"Oh, and one more thing, we're making a touch screen iPod." -- Steve Jobs
Until then, it's all speculation. - Scottish, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2There were two components: #1 was his lack of punctuation and capitalization, which I just find personally distasteful, though it does not affect the meaning terribly much. #2 was the fact that he did not really explain what "DRM crap" he had a problem with. I suspect, as I said, that his point was probably legitimate... but to just toss out an attack with so little explanation is in poor form.
Who am I to decide who gets "punished"? (Your word, not mine, even though you put it in quotes.) I am the owner of a single vote on his comment. I was speaking only for my vote, my choice to digg his comment up or down, and making no declaration that others should do the same. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Confirmed ! Ballmer and Suse Linux slap the ***** out of Steve Jobs.
- coder_cotton, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Note: Linking to photos and videos is supported only for 5th generation iPods running iPod Software version 1.2 or later. All other Notes feature capabilities described in this document are supported for iPod models beginning with third-generation iPod (dock connector) models with touch wheel.
^^Updated PDF - dimplemonkey, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4Uh, Apple...your Freudian slip is showing! ;-)
- collywolly, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2"to make it work, the LCD has to have the glass EXPOSED, which would make the whole device very very fragile. There's no way Steve Jobs will approve a device that needs a flip cover (or something like that) to be pocketable."
Errrm. Didn't they already do that with the Nano and the easy scratch screens. Ok stupid socks were the solution to that rather than a flip cover..... - srg13, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@zonk3r: I think it's usually because the SQL server has a limit on the maximum number of connections at one time, and there are more users than this limit.
- LilBoyLuver, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I love how often the Apple rumors contradict, don't get me wrong I am a huge Apple fan and would love to see any of these products come out but common. The story was last week that the touchscreen was out and the touch bezel was in.
And if we are talking about the iPhone's legitimacy one has to look no further than the cingular-Napster music service that was launched today. - shiftless, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Boy uh... that sure was convincing... >:[
- DelMonte, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The person that wrote this may not be aware of an actual touch-screen iPod at Apple, but is simply exposed to the same incessant rumors as we are, hence the Freudian Slip.
