Touch-screen iPod directly confirmed by Apple

      Look at the logic structure of the paragraph:
      ...photos and videos supported ONLY for 5th generation... ; ...all other features are supported beginning with the touch-screen models.
      With such a structure in the second part, it only make sense to mention a model that is OLDER than the 5th generation, not a newer model. So I think "touch-screen" should have been "touch-wheel", meaning the 2nd generation ipods...

      I would favor the opinion that DVD has rendered VHS obsolete (though some would argue), but in no way does a next gen iPod w/ larger capacity and / or newer features render the current gen iPod obsolete... they both rely on digital music in the same format.

      B) The reference to a touchscreen iPod is in the text excerpted from the Apple document. It's highlighted, just in case someone comes along and says "I see nothing about a Touch Screen iPod"

    This either means that the username and password information in your wp-config.php file is incorrect or we can't contact the database server at localhost. This could mean your host's database server is down.

    Are you sure you have the correct username and password?
    Are you sure that you have typed the correct hostname?
    Are you sure that the database server is running?
    If you're unsure what these terms mean you should probably contact your host. If you still need help you can always visit the WordPress Support Forums.

    But look at iPod Notes Concept -> Overview -> Advanced Uses of Notes.

The basic features are available for any iPod with a display screen (ie, older iPods) -- don't know why they said "beginning with the touch-screen models" but they are obviously referring to older iPods, not yet-to-be-released ones.

      The touch-wheel is referring to the 3G, which was the first true touch-based iPod. The 1G and 2G still had mechanical parts. And the 3G was the first iPod to support Notes. So it seems like a typo to me as well.

    - you can't sync your music wirelessly
    - you can't browse a music store from your player wirelessly
    - you can only send files to Zune players
    - any songs you send to anyone is playable only 3 times or 3 days regardless of whether the song is DRM or not
    - any person who receives songs wirelessly can't resend them to anyone else

    Yeh Zune will definitely pwn iPod. Hold on whilst I hold my breath.

My 4thGen iPod died a month ago, and I want to be able to watch video on the go(On a decent size screen). I'm able to Un-DRM my iTunes purchases at this point in time, and if by December 10th a new iPod doesn't come out, I'll be getting a Zune and taking my songs with me.

Whether you wait for the touch-screen or buy a zune you're taking a huge chance on putting up with all the possible issues. Don't you figure all those guys with scratched up 1st gen nanos wish they would have waited and got the 2nd gen nanos? Try to imagine how yucked up a touch screen will be after a few weeks of heavy use. I say wait for the 2nd gen touch screen ipod or the 2nd gen zune (if there ever is one). Replace your 4th gen with an ipod video, they're great.

Anyone that's ever owned a touch screen pda will tell you it's a stupid idea that Apple won't implement - to make it work, the LCD has to have the glass EXPOSED, which would make the whole device very very fragile. There's no way Steve Jobs will approve a device that needs a flip cover (or something like that) to be pocketable.

    I'm certain Apple will release big screen ipods eventually, but the screen will be behind plastic like all the other ones and the navigation will most likely be in the bezel (much like the drawings that were on digg earlier this month.

      Errrm. Didn't they already do that with the Nano and the easy scratch screens. Ok stupid socks were the solution to that rather than a flip cover.....
    • halik, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Scratched plastic is a minor issue compared to masses of people with cracked ipod screens. Think about it - if you have an ipod with 4" touch screen, that's *a lot* of exposed area. Put that In your pocket with your house keys and you will break the glass the first time you sit down. Unless you have some kind of hard cover case (flip or otherwise), an ipod like that wouldn't be durable at all.

      On the other hand, if you take a 4in screen and put it under 2-3mm of clear lexan, it's a relatively durable set up.

      I've had 3 diffferent pda phones (two verizon, one sprint) and without thosse touch screen films get scrached up like no other. Without a screen protector the thing would surface would get scuffed up in about a week (with nothing else in my pocket). Keys will most definitely mark the screen.

    It's not just the confirmation of the touch-screen iPod is in the intent. You can create custom GUIs for presentation/interaction software. Which means if you have an authoring tool that exports to QuickTime, you can probably have interactive movies playable on your iPod. The impacts on mobile training/learning could be big, as well as homebrewing games and other apps for the iPod.

    So... imagine if it fully supports Quicktime's more interactive features... like how it can play Flash content. That'd be pretty stellar.

    None of them actually read and understood what the document is saying...

    Please bury the article… Never saw such carelessness in reporting information...

Having enough problems with people ruining their LCDs and voiding their warranty by throwing it in their backpacks and purses filled with books, pencils, loose change, lipstick and who-knows-what-else.

    The general public is NOT ready for an touchable screen.

  • daveyt, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Any one else NOT want a video ipod? I do. I just want to play mp3's and have a nice little menu. My 3G ipod is going strong 3 years later. The battery has crapped out but i got it replaced for £20 ($30) and now it should last another 3 or 4 (batteries have improved). I love my ipod and I especially love the accessories - not one of which would work were I to upgrade to a 5 or 6G (future) in most cases. The price you pay for a new IPOD is probably +£100 or so once you factor in spare adapters, cases, itrip blah blah. I think £20 for another few years is a bargain. I use it everyday, only my Nokia 6310i (best phone in the world, bar none) is as good.

    If a touch screen ipod isnt coming ten apple isnt listening to the public that is ravenous for this product. I will be dispapointed in apples inovation if they dont deliver this and will move then to the " out of touch " catagorey. Mind you im a apple fanboi. I got a ipod and am saving for a mac book pro and currently run a hackintash ( OS X on a Dell.. for education purposes ). Which is why i would be disapointed.
