- starmanjones, on 10/12/2007, -8/+43wow man... you could have cut out a lot of ugly words in that comment by just saying...
i have no taste... ignore me. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -9/+32so....tired...of....trolls....
- mikevickrocks, on 10/12/2007, -4/+23Oh...how I want a Mac!

Digg Mirror. Please use this guys, my site is crashing and burning hah. - CrankyMcGuy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12@starmanjones - Amen! I use *nix, Windows, and OSX. I prefer Mac OSX. But nothing is more frustrating to me than having a Windows fanboy discount my informed opinion by claiming I'm nothing but an Apple fanboy. Those Windows fanboys don't use any other system yet claim authority on the matter. It's very funny.
Now if the Windows user has an informed opinion based on current usage of other systems I usually don't have any problems agreeing to disagree. I think they're crazy to prefer Windows (heh), but who am I to tell them their informed opinion is wrong? I haven't met too many of those users, though. More common is "my PC is a piece of crap (or Windows sucks), but Macs are too expensive" though none of them have really priced one recently. If they have used a Mac it was ten years ago using System 7 on an outdated MacSE.
Bah! I'm getting all worked up over nothing here. :/ Both platforms have strengths. To dismiss one or the other offhandedly is just ignorant. - starmanjones, on 10/12/2007, -7/+18>so tired of trolls
it would be different if they knew what they were talking about. there is an inescapable fact in it all... and thats is that Mac people regularly use Windows and know what it is that they don't like... know what it is that makes a Mac beter... know that you can get more done and have more fun doing it... on a Mac.
Windows people have been shackled by Microsoft and have no clue about the wider world. - pr3d4t0r, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10I don't care if it's beta or not, Quicksilver should've gotten a nod.
- deadbaby, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Adium++
How can anyone not love an app that lets you do this?
http://www.adiumxtras.com/index.php?a=xtras&xtra_id=410 - kmedlin, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10I kind of wish the elegance of design was a core element in the Linux / Windows world. It is NOT optional as many programmers would lead you to believe. I cannot recount the number of times I've heard a programmer say, "Hey, this application works faster, has more functionality, and uses less memory than any other similar piece of software out there right now."
They are missing the point that users must negotiate their application with precision and ease. Design is EQUALLY important. I realize there was an article on here saying how getting a product to market first is the critical piece, but look at the iPod and you have an argument that completely conflicts with that point of view.
The iPod was NOT first to market. The cumbersome and battery devouring Creative machine was first. The iPod's complete design and ease of use made it successful. Everything from size, to styling, to integration on the computer to getting songs from an online store. That is why design is key.
Don't scoff at good design. Be inspired by it and reward those who are striving to create elegant interfaces for what amount to mundane tasks. - vdubski, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10This has nothing to do with video games what so ever. Minus the Tetris clone.
- soopafly, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9With all the recent posts about Apple on the front page, no wonder you're so tired. You have a lot of lame comments to write buddy!
- finnegan121, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10I think that this article demonstrates the link between appearance and functionality - some of the apps are beautiful in their sparse UI. This sparse UI is at the same time more functional because it is easier to use / read.
- Taikun, on 10/12/2007, -15/+21And here all this time I was focused on functionality. Silly me!
- Marinor, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Great link, I do love looking at the stylish stuff they have out for Macs, I don't know own one yet but I do want to keep some of these in mind when I finally get the money.
And for the Mac bashers out there, could you possibly open your mind up a little and read/view the article and actually comment on the article and not the Mac product. Mac's have their on distinct style, nothing wrong with that. And the people like that happen to like them more than just their looks. - aplardi, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9Numbers 2 and 1 probably have to be the coolest simple applications I have ever seen. In terms of GUI that is.
- corsairstw, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Only one I'd add would be Adium. It's a very customizable beautiful app.
- bombtrack, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Functionality and UI design are one and the same.
- RadiantBeing, on 10/12/2007, -4/+9Another app they left out is Minuteur. It's a timer/stopwatch with an understated, elegant design. It has the most useful interface of any timer I've ever used. It's an example of good design improving function, not just providing eye candy.
http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/19356 - wrinkles, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Yes, a perfect thread to add some scalps to my blocked user list. Hey, I appreciate scathing criticism, even better with some wit, but the school-yard name-callers gotta go...
- dangerboy13, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4He mentioned it in the Honorable Mention section.
- LawrenceDudley, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4AppZapper is scary as *****, Just tried it and the flash and the sound made me jump!
Neat app though, just a little scary first time round :-P - loriencfau, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Digg for my new best friend, Delicious Library.
- torifile, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I LOVE quicksilver, but the beauty of that app is in it's invisibility. I only see the interface for a split second. But it's one of the first apps I install when I start using a new mac. Normally I hate these "HEY L@@K at my blog list! I'm so important!!1" posts, but this is a very good list.
- videoeye, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3CoverFlow is a MUST
http://www.steelskies.com/coverflow/ - OneAndOnlySnob, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Hahaha, that is so awesome.
- ThinkBox, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Its a nice list of assorted products without overlappingfeatures. Digg
- thekurst, on 10/12/2007, -6/+9I'd add AdiumX and Flock to that list. But excellent list nonetheless.
- DawgDaze, on 10/12/2007, -8/+10I use Delicious Library and LOVE it. I'm sorry it has no purpose for you, you must not have an actual DVD collection (yes, I'm excluding the downloaded variety). I love knowing what books, DVDs, and CDs I own, knowing exactly where in my house they are (via the meta data you can enter) and knowing who has them if I lend them out. That's one program that was definitely worth every penny they charged for it.
- streamx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Linux developers should learn from it! Those apps are truly beautiful! Just compare it to apps that you can run under Linux...
- starmanjones, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2that was good. a couple of them i been meaning to go get. maybe you should do that periodically. as people dump Windows there will be a steady stream of new Mac people that need to be pointed.
- altheus, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Delicious Library for Windows XP: http://www.imediaman.com/
I dislike the unoriginality almost as much as I hate the fact there's no Delicious Library for XP
That 3D cover thing: http://pascal.hervo.club.fr/osxplorer/application_i_cover.htm - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Is is me or do most of them look like itunes?
- Quix, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3^^ Typical Windows user, wanting everything to be cheap rather than functional.
- DocDEB, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2AppZapper is the only one on the list that I have experience with. It has become a permanent fixture on all of my Macs. With each release it gets better. I wish there was a similar reliable way to uninstall apps on my Windows box.
In the runner up group I have been a StickyBrain user but I have recently dumped it in favor of Yojimbo from Bare Bones. Yojimbo is more compact and less system resource intensive than StickyBrain. It would be on my list of 10 beautiful Mac apps. - PlainJoe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Really wish there was more on the functionality of the software, although pretty apps are...good to look at...
- kolywater, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2yes! theres also the idea that programmers cant be or arent designers, so why should they bother. i hope that mindset is well on its way out the door.
- ThomasCJohnson, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Quicksilver should be no.1. These guys are on crack.
- dmoney06, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2flock? mmmm no
i use it but its not exactly the smoothest looking thing around - Balanced, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Delicious Library serves no purpose? the bins of books in my storage area which I can now actually find stuff in without opening each one says otherwise!
- RandomGuySteve, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Why block them when you can keep an eye out and just mod them down?
Use the glitch, it gives you around 3-6 diggs one way or another - bombtrack, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1What is the best clone of CoverPlay for Windows?
- yaphi, on 02/20/2008, -0/+1On what browser? Safari, Camino, and Firefox it looks great.
- volcomjerk, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Thanks to this list... I just bought Delicious Library... man what a waste of money...
I AM A TRUE CONSUMER - akc77, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Although still in Beta, I think that Adobe's Lightroom is just a stunning Mac OSX App and should have been included in the list.
- CrankyMcGuy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Aside from Delicious and CoverFlow, none of these GUIs were very impressive. Take a look at this baby!?! I just discovered Transmission today and thought the icon was dorky, the GUI was sparse, but absolutely loved the CPU footprint. 4X less intensive than Azureus, but not as featured either. Anyway, I think the author was confusing brilliantly simple functionality with gorgeous GUI. :/
- cyrusyrus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Coverflow is just brilliant!
- rinks, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Quicksilver and Adium are both down in the bottom section for notable apps. Check the words strung together without pictures.
- joseph93, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yay! Transmission! I was just using that. And I also used that Tetris clone to play with a friend over the internet, surprised a freeware application allows Internet gaming :) Props to them.
- BillyEveryteen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Delicious Library looks cool and actually useful for my gynormous CD and DVD collection. Digg it.
- oOLiquidNightOo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1if you like coverflow it might be worth your time to check out jewelcase. it's a gorgeous little visualization plugin for itunes. (fyi: i'm not affiliated with them in anyway)
