I don't see how it's spam if you're providing a working link. - thepol, on 10/11/2007, -6/+34Sorry to comment spam, but coral cache got it:
http://www.simplehelp.net.nyud.net:8080/2007/06/06/top-10-single-purpose-os-x-programs/ - chrislee149, on 10/11/2007, -1/+17It's a great list, unlike most usual "Top 10 Mac apps" lists that just have Quicksilver, AppZapper, etc. For once, I hadn't heard of over half of these programs!
- DaMacGamer, on 10/11/2007, -5/+1779 diggs does not indicate how many people actually clicked it.
- tagliare, on 10/11/2007, -2/+12It does. In Finder, you can create "burn folders" to create data discs. Not many people seem to know about the feature though . . .
- BigBroMario, on 10/11/2007, -1/+11So glad I found Burn, I'm new to OSX and iDVD is a little too much for some of my needs.
- Zero2aHero, on 10/11/2007, -0/+10How is AppFresh not on this list?
- pfhackett, on 10/11/2007, -0/+10And it's a lot cheaper than Toast
- Tu13erhead, on 10/11/2007, -2/+11Sleep Display
http://linestreet.googlepages.com/ - thepol, on 10/11/2007, -1/+10Some people get annoyed when you reply to a comment right at the top and your comment has nothing to do with what you're replying to. I replied to the top comment so that people would see the mirror, but some people still get offended...
- adc89, on 10/11/2007, -0/+9What's wrong with option-command clicking the dock icon?
- havaslash, on 10/11/2007, -1/+9already downloaded, "Think"!
- Powerdrift, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7Pic2Icon's feature can already be done with Finder by turning enabling Show Icon Preview in the View Options.
- kolywater, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6even easier than finder is disk utility (comes with os x). it allows you to create, repair, and burn images (among other things).
- aliceinreality, on 10/11/2007, -2/+8Keychain already does password protection. *sigh*
- slapthemonkey, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6Pic2Icon - no updates since 2002
CocoThumbX does almost everything that Pi2Icon did.
OS X has a great password protection manager built in called Keychain. - gmprunner, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6My name is in the credits for that app! Yay! Go AppFresh! :P
- andrewrocks, on 10/11/2007, -4/+8*****!
- bashu, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5The main page, http://www.simplehelp.net/ is slow but works.
Top 10 “Single Purpose” OS X Programs
Have you ever installed a large program only to use just one of its features? I’m a big fan of programs that only do one thing, but does it well. The following are my favorite “single purpose” OS X apps.
iWillQuit - a timer to put your Mac to sleep or shut it off
Namely - the fastest program launcher out there
Fob - a countdown program
Pic2Icon - convert pictures to icons
Burn - open source cd/dvd burning program
Address Book to CSV Exporter - export your address book to a gmail compatible CSV file
Think - limits your attention to one application at a time
webPM - a password manager
SetAlphaValue - an extension to set transparency in Cocoa apps - an alternative to Think (#6 above)
Finder Browser - quickly view images in a folder - MiloMindrbindr, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4Spirited Away is one of my favs: http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/15844
- dbr_onix, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4'alternative to "think" for windows?'
Although I tend to keep Windows application maximized (Unlike OS X which works better with floating windows), so have no need for it :
Drop Cloth : http://lifehacker.com/software/distraction/lifehacker-code-dropcloth-windows-245774.php
Also, I prefer "Isolator" [ http://willmore.eu/isolator/index.html ], basically it auto-hides non-active applications (So when you flick from App1 to App2, isolator instantly hides App1), and puts a black background behind the current application. I find it requires less intervention, with Think I had to keep clicking Think, then the application I wanted to switch to, with Isolator I just Apple-Tab to the new application and it "isolates" the application. They both achive similar things, I just prefer Isolator - triddle, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4bah, the epitome of doing one thing and doing it well is cat!
- ThirdPrize, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Presumably Pic2Icon was written before OSX could do this itself. Dunno why its on the list then?
- gmprunner, on 10/11/2007, -4/+7You!
- jayfehr, on 10/11/2007, -5/+8Not sure about others, but I usually read the articles before digging them.

Finder Browser - quickly view images in a folder - regeya, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3I recommend Xee for viewing photos, and can vouch for Burn. It's what comes up when I insert a blank CD.
- Lemon, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Can I recommend Xee over Finder Browser.
- aogail, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3"if the interface is clunky"
... like most of the apps in this list? - adc86, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2You're probably getting dugg down because your comment has a bit of a "Wait-- something OS X can't do?" air to it.
Also, I don't use Disco, but Toast can handle a few more file formats, for instance some certain dual layer .nrg's from that one site... - dalesmatrix, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2I could be being blind don't see that option in 10.4 for me. I use cocothumbx, which I find pretty cool. http://www.stalkingwolf.net/software/cocothumbx/ can even auto generate thumbnails for watched folders.
- Birty, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Sleep Display, http://linestreet.googlepages.com/
LightMe, http://www.malcom-mac.com/blog/lightme-10/ - willgonz, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2I like it when screenshots are included. You can describe the best program, but if the interface is clunky it isn't any good.
- bardo, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2I've been using Think and love it. Nice work on the list. Most seem so simple and elegant.
I would add http://www.SuperSync.com - Merges music libraries. Cross-platform.
- MiloMindrbindr, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Just thought of another fav, Mozy: https://mozy.com/?ref=UB7E3I
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -2/+3that was quick.
- neurogenesis, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2Great list! Thanks!!
- bigmoneyuno, on 10/11/2007, -4/+5I'm still looking for a way to turn my display off whenever I want to walk away. Anyone?
- jayfehr, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2Anyone get a mirror? Duggmirror seems to be down, "500 - Internal Server Error"
- tylermenezes, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Haha, classic example of the digg effect! That's exactly why I don't have a digg link on my server. Not that anyone would digg it anyways...
If you remove the rest of the path, it's still available on the homepage. - fffizzz, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2you can check out the list at the main page. http://www.simplehelp.net/ However the links dont work, but a simple google search should solve that.
- dalesmatrix, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1For passwords I use 1passwd, it's not free but it is very useful above and beyond what the keychain offers (in particular in Firefox)
- wharpua, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Supposedly this is new as of 10.3 - I'm running 10.4.9, so I can't speak towards the earlier OS versions.
Finder > View > Show View Options
This View Options window is contextual, in that it changes the available options depending on what you're looking at in the Finder - cycle through the view types (Icon, List, Column) to see how it changes. It also considers the Desktop to be its own condition, too, so if you want to only adjust the Desktop, work without a finder window open.
Otherwise, working from a Finder window, select the Icon view and look at the View Options. Working with the 'All windows' option (second from the top), select the 'Show icon preview' option. There are a bunch of other tweaks you can play around with on there as well - icon size, label placement, etc.
Now you've made the system-wide change for all image files in the Icon or Desktop view. I don't know why one would want to use an application on top of this option, but perhaps there are benefits I'm not aware of. This should be a default setting at shipping, imo. - wiihuck, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2dugg for the pic of warren haynes.
- crazybrit, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2Why on earth am I getting dugg down? Because I don't already use a Mac?
So... why would anyone buy something like Disco if it's built into the OS for free? - rebz, on 10/11/2007, -2/+2doesn't look like any mirrors got it, i tried duggmirror, coral and google cache :(
- crazybrit, on 10/11/2007, -2/+2Digg me down.
- wharpua, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0I can't speak towards the quality of a lot of these apps, but I think that Nocturne (http://docs.blacktree.com/nocturne/nocturne)is excellent at what it does.
- themoose, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1Alternative to Fob for windows? Want something really simple, like you just enter a date, time and note and when that time comes a popup appears or something.
Any ideas? -
