Top 100 Mac Apps
chris.pirillo.com — I’ve compiled a list of my top 100 Mac apps for your perusal, since so many people have been asking for it. Thanks to Taylor Olson and Jason for helping me put all the icons and links in place! These apps are certainly Tiger compatible, and most of ‘em work inside Leopard (though the VNC utilities are now unnecessary).
- 2808 diggs
- digg it
- scottsgnome, on 11/08/2007, -23/+7I dont own a Mac but very cool
- iMoth, on 11/08/2007, -10/+6buy one. now.
- GawtMilk, on 11/08/2007, -7/+2Better yet : download it.
By far the easiest way : demonoid : /files/details/1405091/
Just get a blank hard drive and this baby. Installation is as easy as double clicking a .BAT file in Windows XP or Vista.
- GawtMilk, on 11/08/2007, -7/+2Better yet : download it.
- iMoth, on 11/08/2007, -10/+6buy one. now.
- lkv87, on 11/09/2007, -42/+53what would be nice is if each app had a little discription about what it does.
- SRSco, on 11/11/2007, -2/+33Kind of like how under each app there is a little description of what it does?
Read it again.- lkv87, on 11/09/2007, -0/+1the descriptions were added later...
you may notice there were a few other comments further down saying the same thing ;)
- lkv87, on 11/09/2007, -0/+1the descriptions were added later...
- postalblowfish7, on 11/08/2007, -1/+5RTFA
- devindotcom, on 11/09/2007, -3/+10How did this fool get 30 diggs?
- da_bradler, on 11/08/2007, -0/+6they do what I just did, read the first couple comments before reading the story and assume he's telling the truth (ya that would be nice +digg, click story... WTF, go back to comments... god dammit)
- SRSco, on 11/11/2007, -2/+33Kind of like how under each app there is a little description of what it does?
- uberamd, on 11/07/2007, -8/+3Very cool list, a quick visit to the site sums up what most do. Surprisingly I had about 60% of these installed already.
- zongamin, on 11/07/2007, -2/+1exactly how many
- Saiing, on 11/07/2007, -1/+6If you genuinely have 60% of this largely useless list installed on your Mac, firstly I pity you, and secondly yeah... I pity you...
Seriously, this is just a "how much ***** can I install that I'm never gonna use" list... I have exactly 2 of these apps on my mac and I've never felt the need for any of the others.- MadOtaku, on 11/07/2007, -0/+1I have at least 15 of these and I use every one of them. Never underestimate the usefulness of plugins/utilities.
- appletalk, on 11/07/2007, -0/+3I never get bored of these lists though. In the OS X world there's always a new cool app to discover.
- Overcyn, on 11/07/2007, -6/+5hamachi X will ***** up leopard. no more cross campus warcraft 3. : (
- ocellnuri, on 11/07/2007, -1/+2I've found that out the hard way lately. I hope an update is in the works... I want my VPN back.
- roberto_deneero, on 11/07/2007, -0/+1Yea, Hamachi X sucks. Can we say CRASH boys n girls? CRASH!!!!!
- DiggLive, on 11/08/2007, -45/+8There's 100 programs for Mac? Damn, didn't think there was that many.
- TheWorm, on 11/08/2007, -5/+20Well, I'm not surprised then that your icon is a windows logo. Mac tends to have superior 3rd party apps over Windows in my experience with both.
- iMoth, on 11/10/2007, -3/+7did your mom 100 times.
- supermajic, on 11/08/2007, -8/+10I loled, only because the title is just asking for that to be said 100 times over.
Really though, PCs have their downsides and so do Macs. I'm so sick of all these elitist douchebags that don't seem to realise that for some people, PCs are actually a better option.- anjinash, on 11/10/2007, -2/+12It's too bad you're getting dugg down for being reasonable. I switched to Macs over the Summer as my primary OS, but still use Windows and Linux regularly. What's so hard to comprehend about using the right OS for the task at hand, or using what fits your needs and/or comfort level? And why the ***** does anyone else care what OS anybody else uses? Jesus.. I love Macs, but some Mac fans disgust me to no end.
- silveravnt, on 11/10/2007, -4/+3PCs are like computers for poor people
- anjinash, on 11/10/2007, -1/+4If you want to think that way, I suppose one could say that Macs are like computers for spoiled yuppie brats who are more concerned with their image than their output. But that would be generalizing, now wouldn't it? I suggest you steer clear of the blanket statements like that, as you don't know dick-all about anyone else's needs or situations as far as computer usage goes.. only your own. And you appear to me to be the kind of Mac fanatic that put me off from purchasing a Mac for years. I simply did not want to become a narrow minded elitist like you.
- Me1000, on 11/07/2007, -1/+51998 called... They want their joke back!
- Tippis, on 11/07/2007, -1/+1Doesn't matter how many they have -- there is no Total Commander, so no matter how large the list, it will never be perfect :(
- digitalpencil, on 11/07/2007, -1/+1boot camp
- Tippis, on 11/07/2007, -1/+1Brilliant idea... Boot into windows just to manage my OSX files O_o
- digitalpencil, on 11/07/2007, -1/+1boot camp
- siralphred, on 11/07/2007, -12/+3just in time for my osx86 :)
- Me1000, on 11/07/2007, -1/+1ill give it 20 minutes until it crashes again!
- mbonzo531, on 11/07/2007, -11/+1Awesome list.
I (heart) Chris Pirillo!- roberto_deneero, on 11/08/2007, -2/+2Chris is a geektard and you must be gay.
- anjinash, on 11/07/2007, -0/+3Pirillo grates on my nerves.... but not as much as people who use "gay" as an insult.
- roberto_deneero, on 11/08/2007, -2/+2Chris is a geektard and you must be gay.
- thefirelane, on 11/07/2007, -3/+12The Application Sleep Display is also unnecessary in Leopard: System Preferences: Expose & Spaces: Set a corner to "Sleep Display"
- ajchavar, on 11/08/2007, -3/+5you could do that as far back as panther
- nate886, on 11/07/2007, -4/+3How? I was pretty sure this was a new feature in Leopard.
- ajchavar, on 11/07/2007, -1/+4same way he describes it. . i'm on leopard now so i can't check, though if i'm wrong i may be confusing it with setting a corner to "display screensaver"
- nate886, on 11/07/2007, -4/+3How? I was pretty sure this was a new feature in Leopard.
- roberto_deneero, on 11/07/2007, -2/+4Uh, ditto for Caffeine. WTF would someone waste their time for. It's called System Prefs doofus.
- jeff303, on 11/07/2007, -2/+2Uh no - Caffeine prevents the screen from dimming after periods of inactivity. This can supposedly be controlled through system prefs but after experimenting for a while and asking for help online, the only solution I found that worked was Caffeine.
- fr34k5h0w, on 11/07/2007, -0/+2Which is faster: clicking one icon in your toolbar when you need it or going to System Preferences -> Energy Saver -> Options -> Untick boxes. I use this all the time in class where I don't want the screen to dim.
- devindotcom, on 11/07/2007, -0/+2ajchavar, I think you could probably do that ***** in system 7.
- ajchavar, on 11/08/2007, -3/+5you could do that as far back as panther
- SixFeetUnder, on 11/07/2007, -7/+4Dupe, though just barely. http://digg.com/apple/Top_100_Mac_Apps
And site's down. Mirror in the comments of the first story- Rileyper, on 11/07/2007, -0/+1your right, the idiot who duped it called the page top_100_mac_apps_2
- flashboy131, on 11/09/2007, -5/+6awesome thanks Chris, especially for keeping it on ONE page.
- boredcollegekid, on 11/07/2007, -5/+3sweet deal!
- XedLos, on 11/07/2007, -5/+3Nice List
- H2Glitch2007, on 11/09/2007, -4/+5Finally, a list thats on one page.
- HerrEisenheim, on 11/08/2007, -3/+9Eh. There's a lot of crap in that list.
It's also missing some good stuff like Miro, Vienna, and Burn.
And it's missing almost all the good payware: Coda, CSSEdit, Disco, Pixelmator, Transmit, Unison, Mars Edit, Textmate, NetNewsWire and NewsFire (just to name the big ones).- Flipperbw, on 11/07/2007, -0/+4payware?
- aesch11, on 11/07/2007, -6/+10Buried because these same things show up on the same lists every week.
- roberto_deneero, on 11/07/2007, -3/+3I totally agree. Who cares who puts up a new list each week. 90% of every list has the same freakin lame ass software. We've been there done that losers.
- ctour95, on 11/07/2007, -5/+1Colloquy and Cyberduck are great tools, that is a good list.
- wesw02, on 11/07/2007, -0/+1Cyberduck is ok at best, it has a few major issues. My biggest problem with it is that there is flaw in the sftp protocol which results in a max transferrer rate of 5.0 MB/s, its better to just use command line for transferrers over ssh. Colloquy is also decent, but I prefer xchat.
- littlemarcho, on 11/10/2007, -13/+8zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
- jordanwlee, on 11/07/2007, -8/+2 Even though everyone is giving you crap because you "didn't put in a description", this list is awesome!
Thanks for putting together 100 apps that are ALPHABETICALLY ORGANIZED!!! It would have taken you so long to write out all these descriptions. I don't mind going through a few of these to find out more about them. - aliens300c, on 11/07/2007, -4/+6Although I'm not a Mac user I will send this list along to my aunts, They are both mac users and with all the good things I've been hearing about Mac I will be making the switch soon. (for my laptop at least) Aunts' Will love it and I bookmarked it for my future mac references.
Thanks for the write up!
Noah (Aliens_300c) - WoollyMittens, on 11/09/2007, -2/+17Next time state which ones cost money and which ones are free. There's some real gems and some real rip offs in that list.
- ravage86, on 11/12/2007, -5/+45Top 100? Lists this large are retarded.
What's next, "The world's greatest 150 countries"?- falafelkiosken, on 11/07/2007, -2/+2What would you call the topic if you wrote it? "100 programs for Mac that are pretty cool but not the actually the 100 best"?
- roberto_deneero, on 11/09/2007, -2/+1You are officially a douchebag.
http://www.brooklynsucks.com/wp-content/db.jpg
- roberto_deneero, on 11/09/2007, -2/+1You are officially a douchebag.
- falafelkiosken, on 11/07/2007, -2/+2What would you call the topic if you wrote it? "100 programs for Mac that are pretty cool but not the actually the 100 best"?
- mbonzo531, on 11/07/2007, -10/+5Watch Chris right now on his webcam and ask him questions about the Mac Apps on http://chris.pirillo.com/live/
- hotdamn, on 11/08/2007, -4/+18no textmate?
fail.- falafelkiosken, on 11/07/2007, -0/+1Textmate is THE text editing tool
but I guess all the programs on the list where freeware, actually Smultron CAN replace TM if your poor (I still prefer TextMate)
- falafelkiosken, on 11/07/2007, -0/+1Textmate is THE text editing tool
- valkyries, on 11/08/2007, -5/+1im still trying to find a decent bittorrent client
- cramd, on 11/07/2007, -1/+10transmission is a pretty slick torrent client. I have only tried a few on Mac before discovering this one. Seems to have all the features that I need.
- ultralights, on 11/07/2007, -2/+2whats wrong with tramsmission? i know it doesnt have the features of Utorrent, but switching from PC to new mac, transmission is just as good.
- debonarion, on 11/07/2007, -1/+1tomato torrent is great, very simple and clean.
- datisit, on 11/08/2007, -6/+2Has to be Xtorrent. Super easy, super slick and that's it.
- ajchavar, on 11/07/2007, -0/+1i use transmission and love i, though my torrenting is very limited. . . i download maybe 1 per month.
i have also heard good things about µTorrent - zongamin, on 11/07/2007, -0/+2tramission - it now has selective downloading and encryption you know - what more do you need?
- richthomas, on 11/07/2007, -0/+0transmission has an upload bug atm on some trackers. i now use utorrent in a windows xp vm in parallels with bridged networking.
- digitalpencil, on 11/08/2007, -0/+3azureus is bloaty but it still my fave
- bz153, on 11/07/2007, -2/+0zipeg?
- Catgofire, on 11/07/2007, -5/+2I have another list of good Mac applications... it's call The Internet. It's an all-inclusive list.
- TheWorm, on 11/09/2007, -5/+2100=too many. I don't care to read through that whole list.
- ThunderIT, on 11/07/2007, -3/+3Pick me Ponzi!!
- SilverSeraph, on 11/09/2007, -2/+2Digg for the good work!
- NeonElixir, on 11/07/2007, -2/+2I'm surprised that there's so many I've never heard of.
- mogden, on 11/09/2007, -3/+4Awesome list, just installed like 15 of them. Thank you.
- roberto_deneero, on 11/09/2007, -3/+6WOOT! WOOT! We have tard! We have tard!
- mrgoat, on 11/07/2007, -3/+1like 15? so what, was it 16, or maybe 14? They are both LIKE 15. You ***** valley girl.
- TVarmy, on 11/07/2007, -4/+1Down. duggmirror.com
- Chrelion, on 11/07/2007, -3/+2Gah, AppZapper is getting too much attention as an uninstaller. A much, much better option is AppTrap [ http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/ ... ] which is installed as a PreferencePane. Any time the user deletes an application, a dialog comes up asking if they want to delete the listed associated files. It's so much smoother and better integrated than any other OS X removal utility I've seen.
- HerrEisenheim, on 11/07/2007, -1/+1Both are completely worthless. OS X is not Windows. You don't need an application uninstaller. Just trash the .app file. If you want to pick up the scraps, you can just search the name of the file in spotlight. If the app is good and follows the Apple Human Interface Guidelines, all you'll have is a a plist or two in your Preferences folder, a folder in your Cache directory, and maybe a folder in Application Support. That's about it.
- timster, on 11/07/2007, -0/+5Right... and that's exactly what these uninstaller apps do for you. They just save a little time.
- schoate09, on 11/07/2007, -0/+3Unfortunately, many apps with much functionality don't follow those guidelines...
- devindotcom, on 11/08/2007, -2/+2What's funny is that if someone suggested doing what you're suggesting, but in windows, everyone would point and laugh, saying how overcomplicated ***** was in windows.
- jackspayed, on 11/07/2007, -0/+1I also use AppTrap and think it works really well
- HerrEisenheim, on 11/07/2007, -1/+1Both are completely worthless. OS X is not Windows. You don't need an application uninstaller. Just trash the .app file. - pelline, on 11/07/2007, -2/+0Thanks for the apps, now I just need a mac :-)
- gizzymo, on 11/07/2007, -2/+4sorry but a list with lots in it does not make it a good list, some research would have been nice, for instance, unrarx is VERY poor, and fails with lots of Rars, where "Rar Expander" is the most reliable OS X rar expander.
- stalefries, on 11/07/2007, -0/+1And he already has Uarchiver on the list anyway, so why put more that one?
- lochness, on 11/08/2007, -9/+3Errr... according to the TV ads that I watch, and my parents watch and everyone else watches, that make us feel like loosers for ever having owned Windows computers.. Apple computers already COME with "all the software you need" ... "right out of the box"...
Don't tell me Apple is exaggerating or distorting the truth... NEVER... ;) - richthomas, on 11/07/2007, -1/+5flip4mac isnt on there. should be a prerequisite with perian
the unarchiver can expand RAR and many othe achives including 7zX... or just 7z? im not sure.
ffmpegx should be replaced with visualhub. its a lot faster and more user friendly.
overall a good list by Pirillo. hes been doing a lot of blog entries on OS X and leopard lately. he confessed that Leopard is the most user friendly OS on the planet. hes been using OS X and windows together now for the past 5 years. - shak3d0wn, on 11/09/2007, -2/+8http://osx.iusethis.com
- twistymcgee, on 11/07/2007, -0/+3App Fresh integrates well with iusethis so I have to agree with you on that one.
http://coolmacapps.com is an excellent one as well.
- twistymcgee, on 11/07/2007, -0/+3App Fresh integrates well with iusethis so I have to agree with you on that one.
- tuxracer, on 11/07/2007, -1/+4Do *not* use Service Scrubber with Leopard. Using Service Scrubber on Leopard will corrupt your keychain database and render programs like Mail unable to save your password. This may be a time machine issue somehow.
- falafelkiosken, on 11/09/2007, -2/+2Cool, a lot of good stuff, thanks Chris
I tried out LiquidMac, it's funny, but does anyone know how unhealthy it is for the mac to tilt it repeatedly?- richthomas, on 11/07/2007, -0/+1about as healthy as jogging with a hard disk based ipod
- Kugo, on 11/08/2007, -10/+5It's a LIST. ANOTHER ***** LIST. It's LAME. It's BURIED. Don't come back with more lists, assmite.
- roberto_deneero, on 11/07/2007, -1/+1Dugg for brilliant use of "assmite". Well done my son!
- Rudiger81, on 11/07/2007, -1/+3Lame, these seems more of a list of apps you thought up on the spot, most useless. Buried
- sparced, on 11/07/2007, -2/+6This is a much better site, http://osx.iusethis.com/
- bradbeattie, on 11/07/2007, -0/+1And if we're looking for top apps, http://osx.iusethis.com/top
- mad23dog, on 11/07/2007, -1/+5Why does it seem like every other day there is some kind of "Top Mac Apps" story on the front page? I love my Mac.. but it just seems like overkill.
- Madsen, on 11/08/2007, -5/+2Sorry for the...ehhh...blog spam I guess, but I made a list of indispensable Mac OS X Software some time ago in an effort to help new mac-users: http://madsenblog.dk/?page_id=11
- paris75, on 11/09/2007, -3/+1not another ***** top X list again. You know what the difference between this list and the last top X Mac applications submission is? No.. i'll tell yer: 90.
- Eddiecoaster, on 11/09/2007, -2/+2chris is the *****. great list.
- Atomike, on 11/08/2007, -10/+2There is only one good Mac application - Bootcamp.
- blackc2004, on 11/07/2007, -0/+1What does Chris Pirillo know about macs? He's a huge windows freak!
- holyreality, on 11/07/2007, -0/+1pretty helpful, although I can't imagine ever using at least half of those.
