- waltpsu, on 07/06/2009, -0/+66"the company is leaning towards a set price for the application and maps, rather than taking the subscription approach of AT&T"
thank you - orgazmo, on 07/06/2009, -2/+40As long as there's no pricing all of this doesn't matter... If the dock + application/maps turn out to be 200$+ then you might as well buy a standalone 99$ unit and throw it out when it's time to update the maps in a few years.
- eviljolly, on 07/06/2009, -1/+24FTA: "There are also logistical issues. For example, because the iPhone doesn’t support background processes, any navigation app must shut down during phone calls, making real-time tracking difficult—something that doesn’t happen on a dedicated GPS unit, even one that includes telephony features."
Sounds like you're better off just getting the real thing. Not that I answer the phone in the car very often, but that would be pretty annoying to shut down the app each time. - EastCoastGnar, on 07/06/2009, -1/+19Car kit is definitely a necessity with this this thing. Will be interested to see if they do it right, though.
- danwallace, on 07/06/2009, -2/+16Then go away.
- nutmac, on 07/06/2009, -0/+14Since the kit comes with its own GPS antenna, shouldn't it work with older, original, EDGE (2.5G) iPhone as well? Or for that matter, iPod touch?
- jbella, on 07/06/2009, -1/+14Sure nokia is the undisputed king of throwing everything including the kitchen sink into their phones. But if the OS is a UI nightmare.. what good is it?
"...the N97 indeed spells a certain kind of doom for Nokia, if it's the best the number one cellphone marker in the world can really do." - Gizmodo
And exactly why would you want to be listening to the iPod and talking on the phone at the same time. Isn't that a bit distracting? And how are you browsing the web and using the TomTom navigator at the same time, does it split the screen? Should you really be browsing the web while driving? - jkr801, on 07/06/2009, -3/+15and how many apps did you have in your app store?
- stwobie, on 07/06/2009, -1/+11Will it show me the way to the money AT&T is sucking out of me?
- palmer, on 07/06/2009, -0/+8"the Car Kit includes a separate GPS receiver that performs better than the one built into the iPhone"
Which means it should work with first-gen iPhones, but the article inexplicably fails to address this. - JTMON, on 07/06/2009, -1/+8Maybe it just doesn't like you.
- akula89, on 07/06/2009, -2/+9i'd be more interested if it was Garmin
- NotaFanboy87, on 07/07/2009, -1/+8hmm jsmithers, you seem to be hung up on features, which is great for being a Nokia user, they love that. Tell me... because I'm curious... how exactly do you surf the net, take a phone call, play music and run a GPS Navigation program at the SAME time? Perhaps the phone won't break a sweat, but I fathom YOU might be. How long does the battery last when you do this?
Also, does your phone sync with iTunes? I've got 5000 songs, videos and Podcasts downloaded into my computer and I was wondering if I could load that into a Nokia S60?
Lastly, does that 5MP camera with Xenon flash sync with iPhoto? Or do you eventually have to delete your photos because of the limited space? Xenon bulbs are pretty white, does using that flash bleach out your pictures like every other camera phone out there?
From my understanding, the iPhone isn't superior in quantity of features. The iPhone is superior in the quality of its features. - 1platypus, on 07/07/2009, -1/+7Dude have your read the reviews for the N97, the phone sucks.
- StreetPreacher, on 07/06/2009, -2/+7Won't even consider it if it's over $50. Everything that you really need is already in there hardware-wise (and yes, I read the full article), so you really should be only paying for the maps and voice prompts. I have (and love) a Garmin Nuvi, but if done right this would be one less thing to grab on my way out the door.
- Scopitone, on 07/06/2009, -0/+5"Due to the size of the maps, the download will be quite large for an iPhone app—close to 1GB."
Uh, can I please just have the option of downloading maps for California? - Chewie67, on 07/06/2009, -0/+4This was one of the most exciting announcements at WWDC in my book. If they can pull this off, and compete with a stand-alone GPS, I'm in. Putting a stronger GPS receiver in the dock is a great idea. That should take care of the main weakness of the iPhone approach.
Just as I don't want to carry an iPod and a Cell Phone, I don't want to have an iPhone and a GPS if I can just use one device for both. - alexdrod, on 07/07/2009, -0/+4I would agree with you but I've been using xGPS since it came out and I can honestly say it is a really ***** app.
Yes, I understand it is free but it is still *****. - superkendall, on 07/06/2009, -2/+6What makes this really exciting is the real-time update nature of the thing - you could get maps updated instantly if there are issues, and users could upload problems as soon as they saw them.
Even if you didn't buy the app it may be worth getting just the dock! - wastern, on 07/06/2009, -0/+4It should work on the Touch if it can use the TomTom GPS receiver
- collution, on 07/07/2009, -0/+3@jonahan52
"Please explain why you don't know where the hell a home depot is that's only 1.2miles away?"
Maybe he was out of town? I could think of plenty of scenarios.
"Also, why on earth wouldn't you go to the closest one anyway?"
Common sense should answer this question.
"You obviously have no clue where you're going if you need a GPS so why do you need the street name and town."
Street names are very good to know, so that you know your navigation system is actually accurate.
Btw, are you trolling or are you really, really stupid? - SPECOPS, on 07/06/2009, -0/+3Navigon 7200T (among others, but that's the one I have) has free lifetime traffic, included in the price of the device.
- SPECOPS, on 07/06/2009, -2/+5This is more FUD, once you receive the call, you can stay on the call and click the home button, then relaunch the app - and have both running at the same time --- Or, take the call, and talk, once it ends, it will go back to the app in progress. But I agree, why pay for a hardware & software iphone add-on, which will end up being more expensive than a $99 standalone.
- TypeEE, on 07/07/2009, -0/+3jonahan52jonahan52
Let's say, there are 2 home depots, the closest one is at the north side and it has no other stores around. The 2nd closest one is at the south side, which might be 1mile more, but you know there is a walmart, or some other store that you can stop by on your way.
Anyway, do you just let your GPS take you to whereever closest not knowing where it is bringing you to?
Seriously, have you ever use a GPS? - jsmithers, on 07/06/2009, -12/+15I'VE BEEN ENJOYING TomTom on my Nokia S60 smartphone for literally several years.
Now I think it's great that it's on iPhone - hopefully the user interface will be better than what I've got already.
But please, don't for 1 second think that this in any way makes the iPhone superior to what's already out there on the market. Turn by turn GPS navigation is OLD, OLD, OLD on smartphones. I don't want to hear any crowing from you iPhone fanboys. You're playing catch up, big time, and don't you forget it.
Be grateful, but don't be arrogant. The iPhone may be very good in some respects but it's WAY behind in others.
Did I mention my Nokia can simultaneously play music, surf the net, and take a phone call, while still running TomTom and mixing in the audio? Without breaking a sweat?
That's before I mention the 5MP camera with Xenon flash.
But yeah, you're right, my UI ain't as good. I'll give you that. - cthellis, on 07/07/2009, -0/+3Didn't Apple have a "Web SDK" from launch, too? ;-)
- jsauter, on 07/06/2009, -0/+3Wow, too bad that Windows Mobile has been the bastard stepchild of Microsoft operating systems for the last 5 years.
- mellenger, on 07/06/2009, -1/+4the iphone triangulates way faster than any GPS unit i have used. It's called Assisted GPS and they use the cellphone towers, wifi AP's and GPS to get your position: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Assisted_GPS
- SPECOPS, on 07/06/2009, -0/+3"What you're saying is true, but it sounds a little annoying since it'll probably take 20-30 seconds to re-triangulate with satellites again..." --- perhaps, but when I try this using google maps, the initial acquisition doesn't repeat once the call ends.
- etx313, on 07/06/2009, -2/+4I was using the bundled turn by turn navigation on my palm pre over the weekend on the way up north. While listening to Pandora, it faded the volume down, gave me the directions, then pandora came back. I already knew where I was going, I just did it because all my friends with iphones cant! muahahah
- JTMON, on 07/06/2009, -0/+2We've had this since before pre was announced..just not from Apple..thanks Cydia
- GeorgeStone2, on 07/07/2009, -0/+2How do you know it wont?
- TypeEE, on 07/07/2009, -0/+2The thing is, I got my driver's side window smashed last time I left my gps in my car. My next options are to either take the standalone gps w/ me every time I step out of my car, or better option might be to use my iphone as the GPS.
- motivatedguy, on 07/06/2009, -1/+3Troll
- bpeacock22, on 07/06/2009, -0/+2Ah, finally I know how the car kit will play music through the vehicle's stereo. Alas, I'll have to get a new radio with an auxiliary port. But still...I've been most excited about this app and kit coming out. Hope it doesn't end up costing as much as the (subsidized) phone.
- aserer511, on 07/07/2009, -0/+2not that they're doing poorly at ALL, but this could make them huge. as in, 20% more revenue
- TypeEE, on 07/07/2009, -0/+2Tomtom GPS app is really bad. I have to admit that. One key feature that it missed (at least from the cheap units) is listing a few more steps ahead (as a list). This is a very important feature.
Last time I used a Tom Tom, I searched for home depot, it gave me a list of homedepots with the distance from where I am at like this:
Home depot 1.2 mil
home depot 3.4mil
Home depot 4.1mil
This is exactly how it was shown and it didn't print the town or street, how the hell can I know where I am going? As soon as you select one, it routes you to that home depot without giving you an option to back off and choose another one.
I then sold mine and got the Mio and it was much better. - FreddieD, on 07/07/2009, -0/+2Yeah, and it will have those googly eyes like in the Geico commercials.
- RyomaNagare, on 07/08/2009, -0/+2My Nintendo Game & Watch Has all that, dual screens and it also have awesome Liquid Qwartz Crystal Display.

/s - mysql101, on 07/07/2009, -0/+2Why do you need a compass built in to do turn by turn? The software knows your lat/long, and knows your distance from the next turn. As your current location approaches, it knows to alert you to the next turn. What direction your facing is not relevant.
- Tenoq, on 07/06/2009, -0/+2Might be alright where you live, but leaving a GPS unit in your car here will just give you a smashed windows and a missing GPS (and anything else of value in your car). Hell, even if you've just got a window mount, some thieves will give your car a shot thinking you probably just put the GPS in the glovebox.
- alexdrod, on 07/07/2009, -0/+1I got a dock from TJ Max for ten dollars and it works amazing!
- slevit1, on 07/07/2009, -2/+3You're seriously comparing the piece of ***** navigation app on most phones to an application for the iPhone which nearly matches the features of a dedicated GPS unit? There is not a phone on the market that even comes close to what TomTom is going to be offering! And, as other people have already pointed out, you have a serious piece of ***** phone to go with the piece of ***** navigation app.
- alexdrod, on 07/07/2009, -0/+1Really? REALLY? You piss me off.
- Relikh, on 07/08/2009, -0/+1It's called responsible driving jackass.

I'm not saying I never do it either, but you really shouldn't bash somebody else for not being an idiot. - jonahan52, on 07/07/2009, -0/+1Or if you have a tape player you can get the tape to stereo jack and a female-female headphone adapter and use that.
- jwkpiano1, on 07/08/2009, -0/+1I'd pay $75, probably.
- sh0rtbus, on 07/07/2009, -0/+1Hey, i totally agree with you about the list thing. that's something that has definitely bothered me about mine, having to click through to find the correct entry.
- macslut, on 07/07/2009, -0/+1It should be fine running with Backgrounder which allows multitasking on jailbroken iPhones... I know, I know, we shouldn't have to do this, but it works fine and is really easy. So I'm up for the Tom Tom if the price is low enough.
- jwkpiano1, on 07/08/2009, -0/+1No. Those models' versions of the 3.0 OS don't support GPS in any way.
