- StarDal, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1According to an article by the NYT republished at CNET, this feature seems to involve an ADDITIONAL FEE... wtf?
"Owners of the Apple or Sony devices will need to pay TiVo to unlock the portion of the new software that converts videos to the MPEG-4 format used by those players. While TiVo has not yet set the price for the software, similar programs typically cost between $15 and $30, Denney said. The cost will cover licensing fees and other expenses associated with using the MPEG-4 format, he said."

- junkfood, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Anyone else confused by this statement:
"TiVo subscribers will need to purchase special software to tap the features, said Jim Denney, TiVo's vice president of product marketing. The TiVo box would need to be connected to a home network and the program would first have to be transferred to a PC..."
I can already purchase special software to convert files from TiVo format to iPod. Where's the improvement? I thought was some new conversion done as a convenient service for us?
Hope I'm just confused. - scooterbaga, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Macs used to have TiVoToGo, just to a limited extent. It's funny they want to support iPod but not the Mac platform. Bastards!
- broknman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0How about PSP TIVO!!!
- seven5, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0does tivoToGo even work for OS X yet?
- dhughes, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Oops, everyone is posting this :P News spreads fast.
This is similar (i.e. not the same but close) too:
http://digg.com/apple/How-To:_Transfer_Video_from_Tivo_to_Ipod - TwoSlick, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is great for Apple. The only reason they're offering video downloads is to sell more iPods. They probably don't even make money on those downloads.
- helfire, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0why would they be pissed? more people to get more legal content on there product? more people buy ipods. Not everyone has a tivo, infact most dont, so there's still a huge market for downloaded content/paid content.
- RDurfee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I wonder if this conversion software will allow you to cut out the commercials. Knowing TiVo, I doubt it. This announcement will probably make the Mac guys even more annoyed since there is no TiVoToGo software for Mac yet.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Nice feature, should help Apple sell more iPods :)
- dimplemonkey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0now that's what I'm talking about!
How long before Apple decides this is a bad idea? - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Very nice if true.
But definitely Tivo needs to wise up and cater equally to the Mac market. Get your TivoToGo fat binary ready, guys. Cuz when the Mac goes Intel, marketshare is going to accelerate like mad. Ride the wave or whither. - elpayo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0PSP and iPod support = digg
No TiVo to go for Mac OSX = me still mad at TiVo - shawnwaite, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I've been doing this with my ReplayTV for weeks now.. i.e. it's not what the DVR can do.. it's accessing the DVR for the content, then doing what you want with it..
- spadin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I believe what the article meant was that the PC side of TivoToGo will have a converter on it. The shows will not be converted before they are transfered because the Tivo's CPU is not powerful enough for that. This means more conversion time on the PC side. It will be good because it's an all-in-one solution, but it won't be much faster than doing it with any of the other converters out there. I myself, don't have TivoToGo, I hacked my DirecTivo so I need an all-in-one program for my Tivo.
- nfg05, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0broknman, says in the article that PSP is supported too
- SupaDawg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0silly apple fanboys? no mention they also added PSP support?
no digg. - underburn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Good to see TiVO Smarten up.
- LuckyPhil, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"No need to pay for shows via iTunes. Just Tivo and transfer, sweet."
Man Apple's gotta be pissed :) - geekykewl, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I think their approach to DRM, by adding a watermark to your personal copy of whatever you have recorded so it can be tracked later, is also the right way to go, compared to what Sony did in recent weeks.
- Mr.White, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Wicked!
- danielandrews, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Why don't they add support for tivoToGo for OS X?
- martynelson, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0If only the DirecTiVo's supported this...
- fudgebrown, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0http://www.macrumors.com/pages/2005/11/20051121071302.shtml
- HMTKSteve, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0There is one big question I would like answered.
Do I still need a cable/Dish connection with these new "broadband" TIVO boxes? I keep seeing references to the TIVO box downloading shows over night...
I'm on the verge of buying one of these new TIVO boxes... - thecapitalizt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Well, the biggest reason why (apparently) tivo doesn't have tivo-to-go support for the mac yet is because apple is using a flawed version of the mpeg-2 codec and tivo has to develop their own. Supposedly, mid-year is the target for a beta release.
- monkeybutler, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0http://www.tvharmony.com
thats the software i use. tivo to ipod even CUTS OUT COMMERCIALS but its not 100% accurate yet. But its still a good start for getting vid on ipod.
On the ipod video, the ipod is so sluggish that navigating past commercials is a pain. so hopefully the tivo software clips commercials. - wirelessguru, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Up until I read this digg there wasn't any tech toys that REALLY excited me that I could put on my Christmas list.
Now I want 2 things... 1. upgrade to a new Tivo. 2. Video iPod
[edit] ... #3&4. TiVo and Apple stock. - spark, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0you've always been able to do this with mythtv...
- Crazen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Too bad they still ahve that DRM crap that you have to fight through to get content into another device.
- opticsnake, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Just read this same article in the Wall Street Journal. Very cool.
- rcomegys, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0hmtksteve, yeah, you need cable with TiVo. It'll download shows overnight just like a VCR would, if you tell it to (or it decides you might like it). But just like a VCR, you need an input. The broadband feature is just for downloading service upgrades or programming information. No direct downloads of TV Programming (YET... they might be starting something with movie downloads soon, as the rumors go, possibly with NetFlix).
- jeromeerome, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0No support for us Mac guys until 2006 according to TUAW.
http://www.tuaw.com/2005/11/21/tivo-tivotogo-for-the-mac-in-mid-2006 - kuya, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0here's tivo's press release:
http://www.tivo.com/cms_static/press_66.html - shiftless, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'm already doing this. DirectShowDump to turn the .tivo file to .mpg and then PSPVideo9 and Videora iPod converter respectively.
- mentor972, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Too bad they still don't make Apple software. Now that would be nice!
Tivo to go sucks anyway. You can buy an episode of a show faster than you can transfer and encode it. Plus... no commercials. - xenon221, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This was posted 58 days ago; yikes!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0This is awesome, soon you won't have to convert your videos because someone else will have done it already.
http://fyad.org/6cg9 - soccerob, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0wow, maybe it would've been worth it to get tivo before they added that early cancellation fee. oh well.
http://soccerob.com - allthewhile, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0omg this is freaking sweet.
- dtang4, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Wow, this is awesome.
- bcoughlin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0too bad Tivo doesn't have Mac support for TivoToGo
no digg - jbklego, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0kick ass!
