- zblackeagle, on 10/12/2007, -11/+70A PhD in what? Getting pwned?
Oh snap! - theone3, on 10/12/2007, -5/+31I would like a copy of your thesis. I am certain it would provide me with hours of entertainment. *snicker*
- JeremyBanks, on 10/12/2007, -1/+265G = Fifth Generation (video), not five gigibytes, eh?
- jhuebel, on 10/12/2007, -6/+31A testament to the decline of our education system. We salute you, paulgibson!
- TortfeasorG, on 10/12/2007, -2/+26You are a duplicate.
- cam2009, on 10/12/2007, -5/+25apple event september 12th, and nintendo events the 13th-15? maybe not a partnership, but its still going to be a hell of a week.
- Antialias, on 10/12/2007, -3/+20I think a descent analogy to the ipod would be pocket knifes. Theres the swiss army knife that has the little blade plus a billion other tools that most people have probably never used besides flipping them open when they first got it. Then there is the single blade pocket knife that has a bigger blade, looks really nice and does it's job really well.
- proghead, on 10/12/2007, -2/+19ok he just told you that you need to learn not to fly off the handle when people make fun of you, and how do you respond to that?
by flying off the handle.....(wow, in 8 years of college you still havent learned that you never know everything, and his case was proven perfectly by your own inability to turn the other cheek.) - zblackeagle, on 10/12/2007, -5/+20Bluetooth I can understand... but why wifi? Why an expansion slot?
It's an iPod, not a PDA. It doesn't come with 16MB space upgradable to whatever memory stick you can throw in it.
Is the wifi for internet radio? I'd love the mobility there... walk 20 metres, the connection dies, no radio.
But yes to real radio. - Rousterfar, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13I really hope we see Core Duo 2 based Macbook Pro's. Most PC laptop makers are already making the switch.
- Ireland, on 10/12/2007, -4/+15I predict the Gameboy nano!
- jhuebel, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12When referring to iPods, 5G always means 5th Generation. Confusing for technical people, though...
- evansls, on 10/12/2007, -3/+13I doubt apple will reveal all that thinksecret is sharing. It seems whatever thinksecret leaks out, apple always pulls back many of the leaked goods to save for later -- like the movie store. we all know its coming, but whenever it's "meant" to be announced it never is! besides -- i will never pay $10 to $15 for a movie download that only looks good on an ipod when i can spend $5 bucks more to watch it on DVD or transfer it myself to my ipod.
my guess would be: new ipod nanos and imac, but no movie store or ipod bumps. there's probably something else in there too thinksecret doesn't know about that will see some light. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+13Was this by any chance another "anonymous inside source" who disclosed this information? The same one who predicted new ipods april 1st?
- doctorcaligari, on 10/12/2007, -4/+13I'm just hoping they will announce cheaper prices. I like their stuff, but it sure hurts the wallet.
- JoeyDeacon, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10I wish they would put the prices up again and stop all the chavs buying apple stuff. I much prefered it when I was smug, rich and in the know. I hate ubiquity.
- mikm, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11@fool, on the touchpads of Apples, you can right-click by tapping thed touchpad with two fingers (or three, I forget which).
- mkrygeri, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Call me lazy, but I'd like to be able to leave my pod in my glove box where I usually leave it charging and plugged in and have it sync with my computer from there. I'd also like to be able to buy music *FROM* my ipod when I travel. I don't always carry around my laptop but I do always have my iPod
- Philodox, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9You may as well be waiting for Apple to announce that they've found a way to change lead to gold. Apple has become fairly price competitive for its target segments but they are still only interested in the high-end market.
- mikm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6@spengy:
Not necessarily. Yeah, I doubt that Apple will ever have super-cheap prices. But, as you probably have seen from stories on Digg, you can still build similar systems from different manufacturers (even Dell) for comparable prices. IMHO, any premium is worth it, especially for the average computer-illiterate person - customers get great support, plus a powerful rock-solid OS that is still easy to learn and use.
I am no Apple fanboy - I use a PC + Linux - but I still admire OS X (and would probably buy it if Apple ever released it for generic PCs)` - DaceDiath, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Maybe I am alone in this, but I like reading rumors at most points. I mean its fun to use your imaginagion of what could happen or having wishes of things you want to see and if some site gives you a new possibilty you haven't thought of I like reading about them.
I am not stupid I know most of this things are fake but I enjoy them anyway and seeing the diggs I am not the only one. So way bitch about it (pardon my french :P) - mkrygeri, on 10/12/2007, -17/+21..and I'm sure the new iPods still have a battery that's nearly impossible to replace, no expansion slot, no radio, no wifi, no bluetooth and an exterior that scratches when you look at it.
At least it makes you look cool... - Boondoggle, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Personally, I really hate wankers that can't seem to use the reply function.
- Boondoggle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Buy yourself a Macbook Pro then
- treelovinhippie, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5At leats it's a good way for them to gauge what sort of a response they will get from people before launching... they now know if they do release a video store people won't pay $15 for a movie :)
- cmiller1, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5you hate Macs because due to the FUD that you can't upgrade Macs? People have been upgrading the processors and video cards and more in their macs for decades. You hate them without having used them and your brother hates macs for the same reason rednecks "hate them god damn *****?" God, you guys sure are openminded.
- crashingechelon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3If there really is an update for the 5G iPod i may upgrade my 4G iPod (i still use the BW screen). Something still tells me though to wait for the 6G iPod, but who knows what I will do, since I really like the 5G, I just figured it would be better to wait.
- Antialias, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3@nmckinlay,
Zune can't directly browse/download from their music store via Wifi, I think you can que a friends shared song as "I want to buy this" and it will next time you dock. At least that is how all the stories have described it. - rickcarson, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Actually, it was remarkably similar to racism.
That whole 'Jimmy' Mac thing, what was up with that? Name calling - a classic sign of a hate crime in progress.
Your own reason for 'hating' macs is completely irrational.
This whole "I only need one reason not to like it, and it doesn't have to be a good one or make sense" is classic racism.
Example: I talked to someone recently who said that she didn't like Jews because "they control the US". And I was like WTF? Never mind that its absolute bollocks, it doesn't even effect her since she doesn't even live in the US. Real bizarre reds under the beds kind of thinking... and you see a lot of it in OS debates from the PC side. They've never used the other OS, but they read about it 7 years ago and it didn't have feature X, so its rubbish and always will be.
The only legitimate complaints from your brother that I could see were the shocks from the Powerbook, and that it runs Microsoft software (particularly Powerpoint). Everything else was either never even remotely true, or may have been true a long long time ago (say OS X 10.0). I think the wiki is well overdue for an update.
Now the frequent shocks - that sounds bad to me. Personally I'd have taken it in to get repaired. But based on the high quality of the rest of the essay, I have to wonder whether that was a problem he faced personally, or just some hearsay thing that some tiny fraction of people complained about?
I too would develop an intense dislike of something which caused frequent pain. And I might also then go off on a rant and blow a whole bunch of other minor niggles out of proportion. But from the perspective of someone who has used OS X since 10.3 most of his 'reasons' just seem bizarre and irrational.
"Microsoft put out some crap software for the macs, so therefore Apple sucks"? Amazing powers of deduction at work right there. Impressive. - wphj, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6"Please keep rumors off digg until they are confimed"
253 people disagree - theone3, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Subtle. I'll bet you pronouce subtle suBtle, too, eh?
If you're going to correct others, at least be right about it! - tzon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Re: digga
Maybe a Macintosh did something bad to him early in his life.
;) - wphj, on 10/12/2007, -6/+8@fool
http://www.apple.com/mightymouse - Prometheus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I dunno as I'd want to use an account linked to my credit card on a public wi-fi network to buy songs...
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I just love the ipod people walking around here and downtown, when i get the chance i just grab that ipod and toss it and, they always just stand there looking around, then i just walk away laughing. Do you know you can buy a very nice mp3 player for $15?
- digga, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"I personally hate macs"
I've always wanted to ask someone who says this:
"Why?" - bbrosemer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1As long as my mac works I can't complain, and will continue to hope that apple leads the PC industry in creating new standards; and hope that they will not stagnate like other PC companies such as dell. (However Dell does make some pretty pimp monitors, sony did the PS2 and PS1 well, we shall see how PS3 turns out, Lenevo makes the only true PC laptop I would ever buy, and Gateway well you get what u pay for)
- stmiller, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2The new ipods will have bluetooth. For bluetooth earphones. Bluetooth v2 can handle that much data.
- idlethought, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2A battery that survives long enough, has the expansion options I care about, no need for WiFi or Bluetooth, not worried how it looks, and still not worried how it looks. Looks like they'll do for me.
Perhaps you should be considering something other than an iPod to fulfill your needs. There's no shortage of iPod competitors out there. Just an apparent shortage of ones people want to buy. - alexdowns, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1new imacs already released!
- Tyler_P., on 10/12/2007, -1/+2My guess is that the new ipod nanos will not come out until after September 16. That is when the free ipod nano deal for college students is over. If there were new nanos on the 12th, it would be possible to get a 2G nano for free.
- mobilehavoc, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3This is an inaccurate title - it's not new iPods it's the same iPods in larger capacities (and maybe different colors for Nano). Nothing to get too excited about IMHO,
- MephistoX, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Jobs himself said that you should buy a new iPod each year, which lends itself to the idea that new technology will be out each year, which is why this announcement is expected and unsurprising.
Heh, run-on. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Pop Secret: New imac to double as popcorn maker.
- Ireland, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Already happened, but it doesn't bother me.
- noeljohnhoward, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1i dont think "Cupterino: is a real place
- phronko, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1If they expect people to buy a slightly upgraded 5G iPod, knowing that there is a "true video iPod" coming out just a few months later, they'll have to either A) Lower the price now, or B) Charge more for the video iPod than the current generation.
Personally, I think iPods are already at the maximum price I'm willing to pay for an mp3 player. I'd prefer if they lowered the price of the current bump, then brought it back up to the regular price for the next big upgrade. I would buy one right on September 12th if they did this.
Unless the video iPod will be marketed as a fourth, totally new kind of iPod. Then all bets are off. - fliped, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Has to be 6th gen iPod.. because Apple has been releasing new iPods exactly once every year. 2001 first release, 2002 2G iPod with touch sensitive wheel, 2003 3G iPod slimmer and all touch sensitive, 2004 4G iPod with touch wheel, 2005 5G iPod with video capabilities.. so 2006 6G iPod? I hope so...
- geminitojanus, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2"As explained earlier - I like messing around with hardware. I like modding. I like open source. I like the wide choice of hardware available to the pc."
So does Apple. That's why their OS has so many Open Source components. Apple likes Modding too, which is why they design their cases the way they do. Apple also likes hardware choice, but allowing people to choose hardware has the cost attached that the hardware needs to work with the computer, which means Apple needs to control this aspect of the OS. Believe it or not, because the kernel for OS X is open, you can write your own drivers too, and any piece of hardware you can find can conceivably run just as well on a Mac as it can a PC, if not better.
"It's far far easier and cheaper to do on a pc than a mac, hence I don't like them."
It's easier to mod a PC than a Mac, even though their both computers, held together by screws? It's harder to hack a Mac because the OS is virtually Open Source compared to Windows? I'm sorry, but your own points fly in the face of what you're saying. You probably hate them because you don't own one, and are simply jealous, which is true for a great number of anti-Mac zealots.
The biggest problem here is that you haven't quantified a reason to hate them. If you had bought 10 Macs in the past, all of them stopped working because capacitors died or power supplies fried, and Apple turned their cheek to you and wouldn't even look at your claim, I could see hating them. But hating them because "they're not as easy to mod"... give me a break. - foolfromhell, on 10/12/2007, -8/+8A 2-button mouse thats ON the computer. Dont wanna be lugging around a seperate mouse just because of Apple's Foresight. If they were going to give Windows Capability, they should have given a 2-button mouse. There should be a standard. I dont think developers like coding for 1-button and 2-button configs
