- angelp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9I think we can pretty much expect a million stories about anything Apple today. One has to admire how they can create such a frenzy.
- armbar, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9Supposedly, major updates are scheduled for today, which is why there are all sorts of Apple-related announcements going on.
- caliform, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Oh god, why don't you start yelling 'DUPE!' while you're at it.
- Terc, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10@panaph0bic
Guess what?
1. The iTunes store is the biggest online music store, and it's getting a big update.
2. You're on a TECHNOLOGY NEWS SITE
Hence, you're going to hear about it if you watch Digg. Tough luck. - 1337squirrel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Looks like we have at least ONE rumor semi-confirmed. ;)
- koregaonpark, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7@ arapro: I'm pretty sure it's not a glitch. http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.tuaw.com/media/2006/09/itunesstordown.jpg
- mrl14, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6What sucks right now about the TV shows is that they are US based only. IF the movie service is at least Canada/USA that's huge...a worldwide release would be even better.
- TheSaladMan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Same for the UK
- Cander, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Those are movie trailers yo.
- Stecchino, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Everything you just wrote is sort of a half-truth, which is the Devil's best friend.
First of all, just Steve Jobs? What about the rest of the world? Only he can rent?
Secondly, just because the TWiT panel says something doesn't mean it's fact. Lastly, you need to re-listen to this week's episode. They discussed the technology behind "rented" movies that use time-sensitive DRM but absolutely nothing is confirmed as it relates to Apple. - koregaonpark, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5A screenshot of the message: http://www.flickr.com/photos/simran88/241503064/
- aprocter, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Canada too, although I'm sure it's global, so not really of much significance. *shrug*
- ardent11, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Haha now it's just text based and no longer a image saying "It's showtime", all those users checking the page chewing precious bandwidth? =P
- trieste, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Wow. The store is down in the U.S. and now in NY!
- threemagic, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4If you don't own an iPod then how do you get chicks? Do they knock on your trailer's door?
- SonicRift, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2It would be nice if today they announced that the TV shows would come over the Canada with the movies. Cuz *****, I'm tired of going through the trouble of downloading Stargate (or waiting a year for it to come out on DVD, then on television shortly after).
- gaijintendo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I like how it is no longer a "Music Store" but it is still i~Tunes~.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2They have this. It's called a season ticket.
- aallan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2For the UK we briefly had a more obscure, but not particularly informative error message, but it's now the same as the US store. Movies for everyone, despite the iTunes divide?
http://www.babilim.co.uk/blog/2006/09/itunes-store-down.html - kennybain, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Well, considering the rumors of the online movie service launch, I'm sure that it is not a glitch and that they are just waiting until Steve's speech today to go live with a new store with music and movies!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -10/+12"Maybe their getting ready for the true video ipod"
It's THEY'RE. A contraction of "they are." Not their. Not there. They're. Is it really that hard?
Seriously, if you are going to post on a site like digg and expect people to read your comments, please at least attempt to post them in a manner that doesn't make you sound like you are in grade school. - scottlax82, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5It just happened as I was downloading two songs.
- threemagic, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Wolfghost:
My troll detector isn't going off so I'll assume you are serious and add that I agree with almost all of your post. This isn't any normal announcement, this should be an announcement to change the way movies are distributed... it's rather exciting. - kevbryant, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2haha i wouldve said dupe til i saw your keen observation. good lookin on the -music.
- hzrds, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Not only is the store down but if you "Check for updates" you get a message saying they can't find the server
- gomerspile, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1There WAS a legal agreement made involving apple this weekend dealing with their rights to sell movies. Im guessing that there will be something "movie" related on itunes when it comes back online.
- redrighthand, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1the websites is not "down" its receving updates and those updates generally are major news so chill out and wait for the announcments
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Jesus Christ people. We all know that today there is supposed to be an announcement of a new iTunes store. To all the people posting on here "hey maybe they are getting read to sell movies:" thank you Captain Obvious. No one thought of that idea before. It's so original that, OMG, you should start your web site to bless the masses with your astute observations.
To the people observing that "music" isn't in the title anymore: Thanks for pointing that out. It's a valid point. But to the people who think that observing this in light of all the rumors is "observant:" did you know that ***** stinks? Wow, that's observant, right? - bass0, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I'm tired of this. The anticipation for Apple products is worse than the Christmas time consuming spree.
I own an iBook, and I love it. I like Apple's stylishness. But people like this scare me. - ardent11, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I said that nearly 20minutes ago =P
Edit: And yep, it's now back up 1.57am (AEST) - buffawhat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@ ardent11 - sorry... shoulda hit refresh eh?
12:26pm EST - update on the ever fluctuating music store redirect... its now black with big white text. - buffawhat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0how cute...
http://images.apple.com/r/store/backsoon/title_backsoon.gif - ardent11, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1As of 1.37am AEST http://phobos.apple.com/showtime/showtime.html is a 404 error
- rowlodge, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0theres new lower prices for ipods and a postage sized ipod shuffle. it was on the news just now. also movie downloads and a more streamlined "mini"
- DavidRichardson, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I'm hoping for some sort of subscription service that will allow me to download TV programmes. The film aspect doesn't interest me so much, but it's about time I was able to watch TV on the move and at a time that suits me.
- robertcooper, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"the websites is not "down" its receving updates and those updates generally are major news so chill out and wait for the announcments".
We've all seen the Apple Store down before, but when was the last time we saw the ITMS is down? Has it even happened before, that We saw a holding page at the iTunes application, I think no? I still think it's a new app. because new content can & has been added to iTunes without the iTunes app. being blocked. Anyone remember when they added that Disney Movie, the iTunes app, was not blocked? - gomerspile, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0wouldn' t you think the SHOWTIME brand is owned by ...... SHOWTIME.. you know , the cable channel.
- robertcooper, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This looks like they are doing more than just adding movies to the site, I think it's a complete re-brand of iTunes to Showtime, as the name of a new Music, Movie & TV App. Steve had no problem axing the iPod mini & it's "brand equity" at the height of it's success, so I think the M in ITMS is out. It cannot be called the iMovie store, or iTunes store, if it's gonna sell Music, Movies & TV - it just wouldn't sit right.
Yup, I think it's all going Showtime now! I also predict that the new iPod, 6gen, whenever it is released, to be called the iPod Pro. Mac Mini + Mac Pro, Macbook + Macbook Pro = iPod + iPod Pro, could be with 6gen features, + bring back all those features so many miss from the Newton, it could happen, think about it. - Wolfghost, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2threemagic,
I'm amazed at the panic seen here over a web site going down for maintenance on the day of major product/services announcements. Even for those who didn't expect this before today, why is it surprising now? Apple or not, this is silly. - morrowjo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0wow rockelfeller, you really stuck it to the man by calling out the ipod. that really took guts. youre a strong person and i really respect your opinion. is their anything else youd like to enlighten us on? like your favorite foods or what movies you dont like? because i also care about your feelings about those things too, not just the ipod.
- wvdavis, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2Are they going to hold a press conference about this?

- buffawhat, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0404 error on the redirect to open iTunes Store from Apple.com
Are we not being patient enough?
http://phobos.apple.com/showtime/showtime.html
edit- just came back up... i guess we are really messing them up on waiting eh? - Kakou, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2iTunes Videos in the bottom left of one of the foreign websites. early update whoops?
http://www.apple.com/de/quicktime/mac.html - gomerspile, on 10/12/2007, -5/+1The agreement came this weekend. Steve Jobs is allowed to "rent" movies on Itunes but not sell them outright. This means that you can buy the rights to watch a movie for 30 days and then a time sensitive copy protection or encryption will kick in rendering the download useless. That was what they discussed on This Week in Tech. Go Bit Torrent
- betobeto, on 10/12/2007, -8/+4Apple stores down! The sky is falling! OMGLOLWTF!!!1!!
(No keynote-related thread is complete without the obligatory fanboy reaction quote!)
Actually I noticed that this morning while trying to get some podcast feeds. Thought it was my connection at first, but evidently it wasn't. - xoineg, on 10/12/2007, -7/+1Same happening to me. I live in NY.
- rockefeller, on 10/12/2007, -7/+1OMG!!! How am I gonna get my new music so I can listen to my trendy, overhyped piece of crap iPod. I can't get the latest cool trendy top 40 music!!! How will I ever pick up any chicks?!?!?
- Solarux, on 10/12/2007, -9/+2Lame. I love Apple too, but this making front page is a waste. I think it's time to drop the phrase "the Digg effect" and pick up the term "the Digg disappointment."
- flag564, on 10/12/2007, -12/+3Maybe their getting ready for the true video ipod release with optional foot warmer.
