The iPod nano mock-up (PIC)
gizmodo.com — You may have seen the blurry spy-shots, but this is a crystal-clear rendition of what the next-generation iPod nano will allegedly look like. And yes, I still hate it hate it hate it... although I admit I'm starting to lik-- no, I hate it.

- ers35, on 10/10/2007, -7/+201Why did they place a black nano on a black background?
- Squigy, on 10/10/2007, -9/+4Looks like the Gizmodo guys are good on the graphics but not so good on the marketing :P

- unfinite, on 10/10/2007, -5/+33black on black looks fine if you do it right.
so I had to do it right: http://i148.photobucket.com/albums/s6/unfinite/ipodnanomockup.png- svartgotik, on 10/10/2007, -1/+10Nice tasteful photoshop job. I know I shouldn't have to say this, but most people's ideas of "photoshop" is text with no antialiasing and lens flare effects.
- Burn, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4If it looks anything like that, I'm getting one.
- cyberwiz01, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Nice job on the 'shop, but I thought Apple was starting to change their design language a bit. That mockup looks just like the previous generation iPod video, just smushed into a smaller form factor. I guess I was hoping for more of a change of direction from Apple.
- HautePie, on 10/10/2007, -6/+1why does this comment get 130+ diggs ?

- socialbear, on 10/10/2007, -5/+21I too wasn't a nano fan. Ended up getting the sprint Muziq phone when my ipod broke. The usability and quality of the software doesn't compare at all. I may find myself back with an ipod again soon
- unknownsoldierX, on 10/10/2007, -3/+10Look up the Sandisk Sansa e208. It's a better value than the Nano. You get 8GB +micro SD expansion for $150. I love mine.
- EntangledPhysx, on 10/10/2007, -3/+6I've got the SanDisk Sansa 280R from BestBuy for $160. 8 GB with a micro SD expansion upto 2 GB. It also has a radio (a must have for me), and does videos (quite nicely, I must say) as well as pictures, voice recordering (has its own dedicated button, very convenient). Big ass color screen, at like 20 hours runtime. I love mine as well!
- vagarach, on 10/10/2007, -6/+2Wow, that's pretty amazing for $160!
- conbot, on 10/10/2007, -15/+9Why did they to forget to think about design? It's crap.
- Me1000, on 10/10/2007, -2/+8because it isnt real?
- kayakin3d, on 10/10/2007, -3/+45I wouldn't want a wider Nano. The nice thing about the Nano now is that it's so small and thin. Making it wider and still as thin would be dumb. Nano buyer want something they can stick in their pocket that they won't notice is in there all the time - like those damn cell phones.
- sjbdallas, on 10/10/2007, -0/+17oh crap, i just realized: is this how they're going to give the full ipod a bigger screen instead of the iphone-like touchscreen?
- LordSlashstab55, on 10/10/2007, -2/+0it's all about choices. Skinny and tall or fat and stubby.
- greatblackowl, on 10/10/2007, -4/+4They couldn't be that dumb. Huge mp3 players are a thing of the past - no one walks around with one of the old Creative Nomads from 2000, right?
- mrminty, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6I walk around with a Cowon x5. Some of us care more about decent sound quality than how our music player looks.
- greatblackowl, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Cowon x5's aren't that big. I'm talking old old creatives, like this:

- Icklehamsta, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2Who has fingers that small?
- rebuilder, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Is it wider or just not as tall?
- DonCarcharo, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2I'm pretty sure it's just not as tall. Check out this mockup I slapped together. It just looks like they chopped the nano in half.
http://img502.imageshack.us/my.php?image=newnanoqt3.gif - MauiMac, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2its the same width but shorter in height...
- sjbdallas, on 10/10/2007, -0/+17oh crap, i just realized: is this how they're going to give the full ipod a bigger screen instead of the iphone-like touchscreen?
- Korexz, on 10/10/2007, -8/+82Gotta look at the "requirements" of design :
16:9 screen ratio - Check
Jeans friendly size - Check
Fits in universal dock - Check
From a design standpoint the 2nd gen nano was too thin and too tall. It's pretty easy to snap one in half when sitting on it.
Much like the Creative Zen V Plus, this design is more "proportional" and less likely to suffer a crushing fate.- kingvik, on 10/10/2007, -1/+21that is not a 16:9 screen ratio
- zybch, on 10/10/2007, -0/+11Looks like the Nano's fat chubby cousin!
- thripper, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3yup that's what happens with these devices you forge in your pocked. mine's screen broke after a short sit-on. the ipod was bought in the USA and I live in Romania. Good luck finding a Apple Store here.
- fiftyeggs, on 10/10/2007, -6/+2what 19:9 screen? where?
- DaffyDuck, on 10/10/2007, -2/+21"It's pretty easy to snap one in half when sitting on it."-
Hmm, I find it pretty easy to not sit on it in the first place.- ioannusdeverani, on 10/10/2007, -1/+10My thoughts exactly. People complain about a product when they should really be complaining about their own lack of intelligence. If you spend that much on a device, you should be prepared to not be careless with it.
- podgey22, on 10/10/2007, -2/+3With larger front and back, I think you'll find this a lot easier to crunch because the very middle will have much less support from the sides.
- vagarach, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Simple solution: jeans front pocket, or in shirt pocket (works well when wearing a winter jacket)
- DevinOlsen, on 10/10/2007, -3/+11Holy *****.. You've snapped a nano in half just by sitting on it? Nano's are effin strong little devices... I can't help but think you're either A)Lying or B)Severly obese..
- mrminty, on 10/10/2007, -5/+2Here comes the apple fanboy rationalization machine...
- rrossen, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1it's still butt ugly, and normally i like Apple stuff
- tdhurst, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Stop wearing such tight damn pants, emo kids!
I've carried every iPod I've owned (second generation on) and have never broken one in my damn pocket. - xxBondsxx, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1the Creative Zen V does feel a lot heftier and stronger than the nanos...
- sjbdallas, on 10/10/2007, -6/+20I kind of like it but what i don't understand is why Apple keeps changing the general shape to the point where many accessories won't work. That obviously won't fit in some of the different straps and arm/belt clips that are out there for the existing nano.
- ldkronos, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4You can't seem to figure out why apple would redesign it so that you had to repurchase accessories again? Gee, I wonder what motives they might have? Thats a tough one!
- Kikkomann, on 10/10/2007, -2/+45That's what they call "sales strategy" - so people will have to endlessly buy iPod Accessories.
Capitalism... geez.- Kkemepobo, on 10/10/2007, -1/+12http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Planned_obsolescence
- JlmAWP, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1See, this doesn't make any sense. First off, Apple doesn't make that many accessories....at least not many that have to do with size changes, like cases. Those are mostly third party. I seriously doubt that's their intent.
You're different, we know. Fight capitalism!....and whatnot. You're a real rebel.... - caketank, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Yeah, 'cause accessories are where the real money is.
You think maybe they release new iPods so they can, idunno, sell more iPods?
- holygram, on 10/10/2007, -4/+13Why not give the screen more size and just make it touchscreen?
- nelsonuwp, on 10/10/2007, -1/+26Because they already have an iPod like that... only it makes phone calls
- bmwboy2844, on 10/10/2007, -1/+9It would be pricier
- davidrools, on 10/10/2007, -5/+6battery would last 10 minutes
- kwilliam, on 10/10/2007, -3/+2You mean like this? youtube.com/watch?v=Byd_zguHLEg
($190, touch screen, 50 hours of music playback, FM radio, plays Flash games... makes coffee...)
Seriously though, the big "brand name" American products are never the best deal for your money. The gems are harder to find. Cowon is one of those gems - I have two of their products.

- ryancalderoni, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2Actually that would be good, imagine how it will feel in your hand and for some reason a wide screen makes everything better, no really.
- yokozuka, on 10/10/2007, -5/+4Sadly, it has been confirmed as real by Gizmodo. They just published that, Apple Legal has asked to remove their intellectual property from their site, but this pic is Gizmodo's rendering, so they are not going to remove it.
- greatblackowl, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1The pic is real, but this could be an internal Apple prototype or something. It might be real, but it might not be the actual next nano.
- meatmcguffin, on 10/10/2007, -2/+5That doesn't mean anything. It's possible Apple are freaking out about the possibility of people seeing this new design and putting off their purchase of a current nano.
- castleking, on 10/10/2007, -3/+32Anyone have these "spy shots" they speak of?

- DigitalN, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1thats a rendering as to what it looked like, Apple legal asked them to take the real picture down.
- Rikushix, on 10/10/2007, -2/+1Yeah, it sucks that I'll have to buy a new case: I want a new nano (bought a 1st gen one a month before 2nd gen came out) and I think the colours of the 2nd gen, iPod mini-esque, are totally ugly.
- zongamin, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3or you could just not buy a new nano.
- masterc, on 10/10/2007, -1/+25I like how they say "UPDATED again: They Are Real." Apple doesn't want people getting the wrong idea about their products, so they ask people to take down the ***** mockups.
I really don't see how this is Apple made- it's so different than the current nano. Apple wouldn't design such a different looking device. Plus it just looks like crap! - WayneOfSpades, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2It definitely looks a lot more like the Creative Zen V series now. If you stare at it long enough it might start to look kinda-sorta-maybe-oknotreally cute.
- LordSlashstab55, on 10/10/2007, -2/+1how much memory and will it play video is all I'm concerned about.
It seems that screen size would at least be nice for one viewer. - Sube6491, on 10/10/2007, -3/+5It just looks like a short and fat video iPod now.

- corvairkid, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4No, it won't blend. This time, Steve Jobs got together with Tom Dickson and they jointly developed an iPod Nano that will not blend. Like the Tick, this new iPod Nano is nigh indestructible.

- shinelikeitdoes, on 10/10/2007, -8/+2wow. awesome. an artists rendition of what the nano *might* look like.
clearly brought to us by the same retards that also created the "yellow submarine" fake/artist rendition of another
bad idea.
who ARE these morons?
(this comment bought to you by an indifferent person pretending to care) - GeekyGerge, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1It wouldn't fit comfortably in your hand
- macslut, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2It looks like the cover of The Beatles Love album. Black on Black...that's just retarded. However, looking closely at it, it may be pretty much the existing nano, only shorter. The areas of space above and below the click wheel are gone and the top and bottom have slightly curved edges. If that's the case, this could be cool, but I would've rather seen the same size nano with the screen turned on the side (thus made larger) and increased the storage (along with adding video capability).
- JnOrris, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2That's b/c you are looking at the mock-up. Gizmodo added the beatles part. here is the actual leaked image http://www.engadget.com/2007/08/22/apples-3rd-generation-ipod-nano-revealed-in-spy-shots/
- MonroeCR, on 10/10/2007, -1/+0It probably has a HUGE drive, don't think another reason for that size.

I guess Apple pulled all the rockstar programmers from their OS group *and* all the rockstar designers from the iPod group onto the iPhone project - darkened, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Why not use bayimg and not worry about a C&D at all?
- CamperBob, on 10/10/2007, -2/+2WTF. Those make the Zune look good.
- colincsl, on 10/10/2007, -3/+3The Beatles cover art has nothing to do with the spy shot. It's a dumb attempt to stir more controversy.
- TdiFFRob6876, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1Apple this sucks... Coming from an 8GB Black Nano user. Why go wider? The nano was best for working out not too thick or wide like its big brothers with hardrives.
- ismith, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2Oh an 8GB nano user, you must be important. Well, as a 4GB Silver Nano user, I say keep your damn nano and enjoy it while you can if Apple actually makes the POS that is the image being discussed.
- KriLL3.2™, on 10/10/2007, -0/+14I really don't understand this move, if you want a small mp3 player you can strap to your forearm or put in a pocket without it being noticable you got a nano.
If you wanted a big clunker to play video on an have most of your music collection on you got an iPod.
And if you wanted something really cheap you got the shuffle.
Seems the old space the nano vacated will be empty now, this isn't a new nano, it's a mini iPod. Making it a lot wider and giving it a larger screen might have been nice if you actually wanted it to play video, but why stop at a nano if you want a full featured video player? Get the iPod.
The screen isn't large enough to be good with video, and the device itself has poor dimensions (almost square), it feels like a compromise between the nano and the full iPod, thus removing all that was good in both formats: the big screen and big storage of the iPod, and the small footprint of the nano.
Did I mention it's f.ugly?- DigitalN, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2not to mention if I get one, what am I supposed to use that pocket for thats inside the right front pocket again? I will be lost!
- allmarsh, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5That's gonna be an awesome phone

- OddTSi, on 10/10/2007, -4/+3I'd just like to point out that my prediction from a previous submission to a similar story is already starting to come true.
My Post: http://www.digg.com/apple/Apple_s_3rd_generation_iPod_Nano_revealed?t=8699295#c8699295
When this rumor first came out and seemed like it wasn't true it was pretty much nothing but posts about how ugly it is. Now that it's still a rumor but a plausible one we're getting about half "this is ugly" and half "I like it" posts. My prediction will be complete when by the time it's official we're getting mostly positive reviews of it. You Apple fanboys SERIOUSLY need to learn to think for yourselves.- ismith, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1... it is ugly. That's why I don't believe Apple made it. Apple hasn't made ugly since they designed Mac OS 10.0-10.1 (It got better after that.)
Plus, it looks nothing like the direction in which Apple's design team has been going the past few months/years. - HappyScrappy, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Did you correlate the old posts to the new?
Did you stop to think that different people commented before and now?
- ismith, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1... it is ugly. That's why I don't believe Apple made it. Apple hasn't made ugly since they designed Mac OS 10.0-10.1 (It got better after that.)
- Urusai, on 10/10/2007, -2/+3Maybe Apple should focus on making music players instead of pocket video players. The nano should be in that niche, with a non-backlit, high contrast B&W display, a low-power CPU, and long battery life. Sure, some people want to watch tiny videos, but then they should get the iPod or maybe a life.
- crazybrit, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2How does wanting to watch videos on the go correlate to not having a life?
- ismith, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2Apple will use non-lit B&W displays when Redmond freezes over. Sorry, hell. I meant when hell freezes over.
- crlake, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0Um... Apple has already made a music player with a non-backlight, and long battery life -- it's called an iPod Shuffle -- Duh!!

- LoganT, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Perfect iPod Nano IMO would be
3" Mult-Touch Screen
4, 8, and 16 GB storages.
It's what I've wanted the Nano to always be. Similar product is the Cowon D2. - rupprupp29, on 10/10/2007, -2/+12mroe like the iChode
- runnin17, on 10/10/2007, -2/+3I can't be the only person who wants all future iPods to have a touchscreen can I???? Why patent the crap out of multitouch if they aren't going to use it on iPods, which will sell 100000000000x more than iPhone anyway!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
- Marcateyou, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0weell rumor has it that the touchscreen on the iPhone may wear out in 3-6 months, so I would want my iPod to have much more life than that
