- BrendanSheehan, on 06/13/2008, -6/+109To sum it up: If you already have an iPhone don't get the new one. If you don't have one, get the new one - if you can afford the contract.
- ronjon13, on 06/14/2008, -4/+58how is that price higher than any other smart phone in the world?
- celer1ty, on 06/14/2008, -3/+52I'm holding out for the hover board feature.
- inactive, on 06/14/2008, -1/+36I'm in the UK. I'll get a free upgrade to iPhone 3G if I restart my 18 month contract. (I'm only 2 months into it anyway)
The plans are also the same (they actually have an additional cheaper plan for the 3g)
I think this is the first time the UK hasn't been ripped off compared to the U.S. - The_Ox, on 06/14/2008, -3/+38They forgot to mention that the iPhone 3G has a better speaker
- Palaceguard, on 06/14/2008, -2/+28I can't wait for all the in-store activation problems. People bitching that the salespeople are ripping open the iPhone boxes and scratching their new iPhones 3G. All iPhones 3G will be open box for returns.
- footbag01, on 06/14/2008, -7/+303G is only 2X as fast? Thats not so fast. 20 sec to download a web page for $35/mo? What's wrong with AT&T?
- h2d2, on 06/14/2008, -11/+33Ummm, I'll tell you how...
You can get an HTC Touch from Sprint on eBay brand-new for around $200. It has Rev. A EVDO (2 to 3 times faster than AT&T's 3G), aGPS, Touchscreen, expandable memory with SDHC and over 20,000 third-party apps available right now. (ROM update available for GPS/Rev. A)
Combine that with a SERO plan which gives you 500 minutes, 7pm free-nights and weekends, unlimited text and unlimited internet. So after two years, you will have spend over $1000 less than with iPhone 3G / AT&T along with having unlimited text messaging and faster 3G that you won't get with AT&T and $70 a month in subscription fees. - Viakenny, on 06/14/2008, -2/+22unless you really want that 3G data and GPS.
- superkendall, on 06/14/2008, -11/+30Real phone users email photos instead of using ten year old protocols.
And there will probably be a few hundred voice dialing applications to choose from with the launch of the app store...
Enjoy your obsolescence! - digiguy, on 06/14/2008, -0/+18No more pictures of people opening up their iPhone box.
- 37prime, on 06/14/2008, -3/+21Honestly, Gizmodo does not have iPhone 3G yet. So, whatever they say right now are just attempts to sucker those who likes, loves and hates anything iPhones and get lots of hits.
The information the had on the article just another rehash from other sites. - bj00rn, on 06/14/2008, -3/+19"There's a restriction in the SDK that prohibits developers from using the phone for real time route guidance"
I was excited, but it's fading away a little more every time I read about it.. - oOLiquidNightOo, on 06/14/2008, -1/+15Yes.
- Quicksilver4648, on 06/14/2008, -3/+16Here is a question. Would it be possible to purchase a 3G iPhone with a bare-bones minimum (I believe $30 a month) 2-year service contract and after the 30 day grace period I call up AT&T, cancel my contract, get charged and pay the $175 Early Termination Fee? This would bring my total iPhone endeavor to $414 ($199+175+30) and I would be left with a contract less 3G iPhone.
- Tenlow, on 06/14/2008, -2/+15....For improved accuracy over standard GPS by itself. It is still "true GPS" but it also uses triangulation. Why is better than normal not good enough for you?
- br0ken1128, on 06/14/2008, -2/+13Even though I have a 1st gen iphone, I was going to get the iPhone 2 for the better battery life and GPS, but if they are requiring you buy it at an apple or at&t store and activate it there, they can forget me buying one ..
- DivisibleByZero, on 06/14/2008, -0/+10Guh, stupid public hotel business center kiosk wont let me see the page because it evidently contained the string "barely 18".
Questions I need answers to:
1) Will they LET me do prepay for my minutes, but still get the unlimited data plan?
2) I'm assuming that if they let me do the above, they won't give me the discounted price. Anybody know what full price is on these things?
EDIT: Awesome. their word filter doesn't pick up digg comments. Great job with the censorship guys. - DivisibleByZero, on 06/14/2008, -0/+10I always figured SMS and MMS were cheaper for the phone companies to transport than their TCP/IP counterparts. Surprised they don't make it free to save on their own maintenence costs.
- troyallen069, on 06/14/2008, -4/+13Apple is ruining the experience with the activation process in the store. It was bad enough the first time, now it will be stupid. The sales people better wash their hands and not tear the box or scatch my iPhone.
- ichorid, on 06/13/2008, -0/+9the over 2 years thing is ridic, honestly every one I know has a cell phone and pays the same amount over the course of 2 years. If its a blackberry, a razr, a flip they got as a promo, the difference is a few hundred dollars maybe. And if thats a problem for some people they obviously shouldn't be spending money on a higher end smart phone.
- inactive, on 06/14/2008, -19/+27WTF you cant multimedia MESSAGE!!!!!!!?????? WHY!!!!!
A great alternative is the XPERIA X1 by Sony Ericsson :)
With all the (available) WiFi out you still have to get a Data Plan :( even if you have your own - spoonchucks, on 06/14/2008, -1/+9"no other network has 3g."
Correction, no other network runs on the same 3G frequencies. - StuartGibson, on 06/14/2009, -1/+9Ditto, though I'm paying the £59 to go from my current 8Gb up to the 16Gb. Not a ton of room on my current one and want to leave room for apps. Worth noting as well that there is no additional cost going for 3G data instead of EDGE in the UK, unlike the extra $10 the US is getting stung for. Yay for O2 and the UK for once.
- StuartGibson, on 06/14/2009, -1/+9If you can prise it open, solder in 3G and GPS chip and antennae and then somehow fool the phone's firmware into believing it is the new one so the features work then yes, it should be easy enough.
- serpentor, on 06/14/2008, -10/+18$20 for unlimited SMS!
Hot damn, that's 2/3rds the cost of my Sprint SERO plan, which in addition to unlimited text has 500 mins, my favs free calling to any 3 numbers, unlimited data/USB tether, MMS, nights @7pm, etc. - ValleyWorker, on 06/14/2008, -0/+8if they went w/ Verizon, everyone would complain, "what? iPhone picks a provider that can't even freaking roam!? Steve lacks international vision!"
- kevinwiz, on 06/14/2008, -1/+9by that logic, you would have no cell phone for two years in order to save money for a ***** car's down payment
- 0ldmankdude, on 06/14/2008, -2/+9too bad the iphone is gsm/edge/hsdpa not cdma/evdo...
- digiguy, on 06/14/2008, -0/+7Verizon will not carry the iPhone. It's tied to AT&T
- cheungroys, on 06/14/2008, -1/+8I really want to know more about the in-store activation... i don't want people to touch my brand new iphone with their greasy fingers before i do. nor do i want to use AT&T.... Apple? please don't have in-store activation. itunes activation is great.
- Wang, on 06/14/2008, -1/+8You will be forced to pay "full retail price" for the phone in order to keep it (since it's usually subsidized through the length of your contract). The retail price has not been decided yet, according to at&t (so you can bet it will be $$$).
- digiguy, on 06/14/2008, -1/+8The story was they did go with Verizon with the iPhone offer, they rejected Apple proposal.
- abourret890, on 06/15/2008, -1/+8You:"Call Home"
Phone:"Call Mom?"
You:"No, Call Home"
Phone:"Call Brian?"
You:"Call Home!!!"
Phone:"Call Denise?"
Voice dialing a deal breaker...give me a break. - kkthxbye, on 06/14/2008, -1/+7Anyone has an idea of how they will release it in Denmark. Our laws say, that you can't be tied to a plan for more than 6 months. So will they just pump the price of the plan?
- inactive, on 06/15/2008, -2/+8That's not really comparing apple's to apple's. The Sprint SERO plan isn't a normally advertised plan and is meant, as the name suggests (Sprint Employee Referral Offers), to be by referral only. From what I understand anyone can get it if they try hard enough (which isn't supposed to be that hard) but it's not compatible with every phone (BB plans especially), you can't do family plans (aka share your minutes), and you have to sign a 2 year contract no matter what.
The biggest let down? No iPhone ;) But have fun with your Instinct, I hear lines are already forming for that thing, I mean people just can't stop talking about it! - Zap2, on 06/14/2008, -4/+10so your not texting? because I know thats older then MMS
- BLAM8, on 06/13/2008, -3/+9Fact Check: Actually, it's not that much more than a regular iphone plan, and you're getting 3G.
- dagamer34, on 06/14/2008, -0/+6Plastic is better for wireless signals than aluminum.
- spaniardhobo, on 06/14/2008, -5/+10I just don't get why are u digging him down. Stating the hype will get your wallet ripped-off and you even get less services is informative. It's not an opinion he has given factual information to support that claim.
- Pyehole, on 06/15/2008, -0/+5"Please think about this and do some research before answering"
***** off dude. Do we look like your research staff? - RubberBinder, on 06/14/2008, -1/+6Assuming you work 350 days a year, that means you make about 25 dollars a day. For a round number lets say you work 5 hours a day, so you make 5 dollars an hour. I'd say get a better job.
- cheeseron, on 06/14/2008, -0/+5you still have to pay the activation fee, which is like 36 dollars
- TheSnuffster, on 06/14/2008, -0/+5I'm waiting to see what O2 are going to do about their new Pay & Go price plan. Anyone here reckon it'll support 3G?
- Pyehole, on 06/15/2008, -1/+5I love that OGC has become a text euphemism for jacking off. Funny *****.
- digiguy, on 06/14/2008, -2/+6It took 4 hours total time for me to get the first iPhone, now with the activation in the store, the iPhone 3g might take all night.
- rolf, on 06/14/2008, -0/+4The iPhone is the convergence device I really, really, really want (it's hard to get good software on a phone) but I'll stay with my pay-as-you-go phone that cost initially $15 and get a 1 year card with 800 minutes doubled (1600 - enough for me, as any real calls go on a regular phone) for $150 a year.
Nothing against the iPhone, I find most data plans -- what I really want -- overpriced. If it ever hits $10-15 a month, that would be okay. Probably will be in the same boat with Android but at least the choice of carrier will let me make the monthly bill a bit smaller.
Hopefully we'll see some unlocked iPhones and good competition from Android/others whenever Apple's exclusive contract with AT&T is up (please don't get renewed) or maybe sooner. - coldfusion1970, on 06/15/2008, -0/+4Is MMS a big feature in the US?
I have NEVER used it on any of my mobiles in the UK. - sjmulder, on 06/14/2008, -0/+4I'm afraid I can only pay using Western Union. Do you ship to Nigeria?
- viacombusta, on 06/14/2008, -0/+4Helio has had 3G forever. I pay $99/month for unlimited text/internet/minutes. GPS too.
