- Ireland, on 10/12/2007, -4/+10I never bothered with it until I tried the UB (Universal Binary) today. I'm currently using Aluminum Alloy 1.6.1 (Cryogenic version). This is great, it's like a break from the same old same old. I will go back to the Mac default interface at some stage. I'll try out a few others too. I'm think Leopard will have some big changes to the UI. It's about time we see some bigger changes. I think some parts of Aqua like the blue scroll-bars and the shiny, bubbly buttons are too much after a while (cool at first though). Personally I would like if they took some cues from iTunes 7 design, not all it's cues, but some like its utilitarian scroll-bars etc.
- Tu13erhead, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7Finally.
- Ireland, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5I never added; I would like to see more subtle window shadows too. I love the new 'Quicklook' look in Leopard. So cool, but so practical too, I can't imagine that having very big shadows, because it's semi-transparent black. A prime example of what I'm talking about is if you show the volume controls in the munubar, look at the shadows around it when it's clicked on, just a little too much IMO.
- brandizzle, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Here ya go =)
http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/21579 - ignorantcow, on 10/12/2007, -3/+51. Shapeshifter 2.4, not 2.04..
2. "UNO" is a system files replacement app which applies the unified look across applications- different from the ability to theme unified windows which is what Shapeshifter supports. - Donut, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4ive been using a beta for the longest time. but havent had any performance issues with it.
- badtz, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Has anyone experienced any instabilities with Shapeshifter? I've been meaning to try it, but I've been really weary about it. And also having to install the haxie.
- Dog_Paddle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This was my first time using it, and it slowed my iMac down quite a bit. I played around with it for a couple of minutes, and then uninstalled it. Especially as soon as I installed it, before restarting, the computer basically froze. Only one theme I liked, and it's really not that much better than default Aqua with UNO.
On a side note, it looks like people are just digging everyone down. I gave a digg to everyone to reverse this evil. - ilgaz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1http://interfacelift.com/ is doing very fine
- ectocooler, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4thanks digg, for letting me know, and then making it so the site gets so hammered i can't download it :)
- codywalton, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3I was a huge fan of SS on my old G5. I've got a MBP now and have been waiting for this for some time. I tried it last night and was dissapointed to see a NOTICEABLE performance decrease... which I never had with my old PPC system. Apps took on average double as many bounces to load, and response time was laggy. Too bad, I miss some of the great themes like SIRO... but I won't be using SS until these performance issues are addressed.
- uppedbyhiggins, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3I've been using it for a few months now with no problems.
I also use CandyBar and Pixadex (because I love cabel.name and Panic software). - wschamps04, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1the themes in the download section of shapeshifter are pretty bad (except for amora). macthemesforums.net has the most of anywhere.
- kyc050564, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The newest version of App Enhancher causes all Intel Macs to max out the cpu for around 5 minutes everytime os x starts up. The shapeshifter dev basically said that there's nothing he can do about it till unsanity releases a better APE.
- MisterKen, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Yes, esoteric as it is... We're and advertising agency and several of us had it installed on our machine earlier this year.
We started experiencing weird system freezes, the screen freezing until it could redraw and applications suddenly quitting. We trolled a few sites and someone mentioned that it didn't play nice with Illustrator (CS). We removed the app and all the weirdness went away. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Is it just me, or does anyone else find Shapeshifter themes just plain ugly? If I could find 1 theme that looked nice I would install it.
- kms007, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Shapeshifter 2.4 feels very responsive and so far, in my testing, has been stable for the main apps I'm running: Photoshop, Netnewswire, Graphic Converter, etc.
- whiskeyclone, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2@uppedbyhiggins
What version are you using? I've been using 2.4b(4) for a while now without any problems and I use Adobe Illustraitor CS on a regular basis.
@badtz
I've not noticed any performance drop even on my Mini G4 with 1gb RAM, which was a nice surprise. I run Shapeshifter with PhotoPro v1.5 theme, a variety of icons changed with Candybar, and Statoo on my desktop. For anyone interested in what all that looks like you can see it here:

I have also changed the dock colour/transparency, Adium's GUI (everything edited, including a quick and nasty gradient background image for the conversation window), and rely on Overflow and the Butler constantly.
I really like how painless it is to change the feel and look of OS X with a few simple clicks. They are 'Personal Computers' after all, and I like a bit of personality besides a different screensaver every now and then. Plus I'm really fickle (have the screensaver set to change between one of 300 images every 15mins), and being able to give my GUI a system wide overhaul in less that 20 mins is great. My experiences of changing the look/feel of windows have been much less easy/plesant, and until ATI start to play nice, I can kiss anything looking as pretty under Linux on my laptop for a while. - badapplestudio, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Shapeshifter has and will always be... BUGGY
'nuff said - NSResponder, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Yes, many people have experienced instability using ShapeShifter, and other hacks that use APE. Please note that this is an UNSUPPORTED hack, and if it breaks any apps that you use, it's your problem, and your problem alone.
-jcr - ggore, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2It's nice to see Shapeshifter updated, even if almost a year after Intel Macs came out. However, theming has become a dead subject in the interim, as there haven't been any new themes or updates released in months. Macthemes hasn't been updated since May, despite statements that "We know the website is broken, it will soon be fixed witha new version of Macthemes", etc. It doesn't take 6 months to fix a website!!! The old themes I have in my collection don't all work any more anyway, so I will let this update go and stick with the default Mac UI.
- piwy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2just search for it on version tracker
- CitizenKamb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Has anyone heard of a theme that gets rid of the menu bar and puts the "File, Edit, etc" tabs in each window? I'm guessing not, but that's a feature I'd love to have.
- Xilon, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Been waiting a while..
- thatgirlismine, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Seriously though, Versiontracker sucks. It has the scariest most ancient design, rivaling download.com.com in ineptitude.
While not perfect, I'd say macupdate is less of a nightmare overall: http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/13335 - wilsmex, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2Sweet. I love ShapeShifter.
- gb506, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1go to versiontracker.com and dl from there, it looks like the unsanity site is down but the ftp services are still working...
- Po0py, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1No love for PearPC?
- koregaonpark, on 10/12/2007, -6/+4The Apple Blog has just published a post on this: http://theappleblog.com/2006/12/01/shapeshifter-24-released-with-intel-flavoring/
- drlha, on 10/12/2007, -9/+4Yes! Now I can make my beautiful Mac OS X desktop look like some crappy KDE theme. WOOHOO!!!
Sorry. ;) - Ireland, on 10/12/2007, -8/+2UNO is crappy, sorry. It's either too bright or too dark depending on what setting you choose.
