- ThatsUnpossible, on 01/14/2009, -15/+162I happen to like the music I own, that's why I bought it. I like listening to it.
However, with 6000 songs and hundreds of albums, I often 'forget' what I have that I haven't heard in a while.
The genius playlist feature isn't meant to usurp what Pandora does, it's entirely different usefulness.
Get a grip, the world isn't binary. - CommonSense2k8, on 01/14/2009, -24/+160umm.... it is much better then grouping songs with similar genres....
- MWeather, on 01/14/2009, -36/+140So it's like Pandora, but it only works on music I already own? Screw that.
- TnTBass, on 01/14/2009, -1/+86*sorry (sorry)

- RichMUrrills, on 01/14/2009, -14/+91I love the Genius playlist creator on my iPhone - if I can't decide what album to listen to on the way to work I just choose a song to fit my mood, hit genius and let it run. I often end up listening to songs I haven't hear din ages and thinking "wow, I forgot how cool that track was"
- ClevelandBrown, on 01/14/2009, -5/+64Apple uses the word genius way too liberally.
- jakash, on 01/14/2009, -3/+48Mirror, just in case: http://i42.tinypic.com/v5vql3.jpg
- LowROI, on 01/14/2009, -6/+49I love the genius, it can be a little hit or miss at times but it's a lot more than genre grouping. If I start a playlist with a Canadian artist I get more Canadian music, if I pick a song that's not a single I get a lot more B-sides. I'm pretty sure tempo, times played, and other users libraries also come into play.
As much as I really don't care for Apple, and even though I still think iTunes is a bloated piece of software, the genius playlist editor is the bees knees. - mnortei, on 01/14/2009, -7/+49*than (sry)
- StormTroopr, on 01/14/2009, -0/+37So after every song I listen to I should listen to Rick Astley?
- ThatsUnpossible, on 01/14/2009, -4/+36Funny, but that's not how it works.
It correlates your song with other people that purchased the same song, and then looks at other songs those people purchased.
I've had many genius playlists that have similar sounding music, but not the same genre. - Aaronvg, on 01/14/2009, -0/+26Pandora doesn't work outside of the USA. Fortunately, Last.fm does. :)
- awolfe91, on 01/14/2009, -0/+26This is exactly what I use it for. Most of the time I don't want to listen to just one artist or album, and I don't have a playlist for every mood I have (and if I did I'd leave some music I'd forgotten about out). Genius is great to quickly get a custom mix going.
- a1cd, on 01/14/2009, -4/+26I use Genius when I am out on a date, when the girl tells me a song she likes I can use Genius to bring up other songs she might like into the conversation.
..I mean I would do that if I could ever get a date - mywhitenoise, on 01/14/2009, -1/+22This was my face after reading the comic....
-_- - Snoosy, on 01/14/2009, -0/+21I disagree. I enjoy sex with your girlfriend much more than this comic.
- FTWmovin2canada, on 01/14/2009, -2/+22I was going to say that too... I've never tried Genius but Pandora seems to have been doing this well for quite a while.
- CommonSense2k8, on 01/14/2009, -2/+19it picks songs that users play together. So you pick a political Dylan song, a political Beatles song might play... Whatever the average user plays together, Genius will suggest... or at least thats how it is explained on the apple website... and seems to work that way from personal use.
- aenima987, on 01/14/2009, -1/+17Last.fm is way better in my opinion.
- embryoinbloom, on 01/14/2009, -0/+16http://www.last.fm/home
- nickbarber, on 01/14/2009, -1/+16That is so much better than the original post.
- FuzzplugJones, on 01/14/2009, -4/+18I like how I have an 80gb iPod classic and I don't have genius, even with the latest firmware. Thanks Apple, here's another $249 for basically the same unit with one stupid feature.
- MysticalYute, on 01/14/2009, -2/+15Who the hell cares, its a feature that gets the job done. I've found song I used to love and forgotten!
- squee6952, on 01/14/2009, -2/+15HA legal that makes me laugh
- valleyvideo, on 01/14/2009, -6/+19Dugg because A) it's not xkcd and B) I actually laughed.
- mrevaaaaa, on 01/14/2009, -1/+14Whoever photoshop'd that didn't even try.
- Paulish, on 01/14/2009, -0/+13"Get a grip, the world isn't binary."
Is it, or is it not? - logantn, on 01/14/2009, -7/+19That wasn't funny at all...
- Davidins, on 01/14/2009, -9/+21So rabbits can speak now?
- MtheoryX, on 01/14/2009, -0/+12@StormTroopr:
You mean you DON'T do that already? What's wrong with you? - Davidins, on 01/14/2009, -0/+12Sorry to hear that
- dannelander, on 01/14/2009, -1/+12Firstly, I'm an Apple fanboy and employee.
Secondly, I agree. Some features should be included in the fw updates. - BryanJK, on 01/14/2009, -0/+11lol you're
- Locke21, on 01/14/2009, -0/+11thesixtyone.com is a pretty sweet music discovery site as well. It's sort of addicting.

011011100010011101110100 - zeabu, on 01/14/2009, -0/+11The next mission for the geeks. Screw iTunes Genius by put Rick Atley after EVERY song they listen.
- itsmikey, on 01/14/2009, -0/+10Last.fm is great but there's no reason you can't utilize both to find great new tunes.
- quarkde, on 01/14/2009, -0/+9It would be interesting to see a version of Genius one day that analyzes the sound of each song, compares them, and groups similar songs by their sounds.
- ophello, on 01/14/2009, -0/+9It's user-driven.
- geoken, on 01/14/2009, -0/+9Pandora actually has a music analyzing algorytm. Genius, lastFM and similar are more tag/metadata based. If you throw a song they now nothing about at them they won't know what to do with it while pandora will actually analyze the song itself.
- Smokeythebandit, on 01/14/2009, -0/+8These are good too:
http://www.musicovery.com/
http://www.spotify.com/en/ - moraldebate, on 01/14/2009, -0/+8It's very simple and I'm surprised nobody guessed this.
Apple Genius information comes from the iTunes store. If somebody purchased one song with another song, then that data goes into Genius. The same goes for the playlists that people upload onto iTunes.
If it ever says "we have no data about this song" it's probably because they don't sell it on iTunes.
And I think someone entered Beatles song Genius info by hand. - PrintScrn12, on 01/14/2009, -0/+8The concept is simple but implementing it with accuracy is very difficult. Lots of active research i this area for just tiny bits more of accuracy.
- Diggnabbit, on 01/14/2009, -1/+9It also suggests music fromthe itunes store that you don't own...
- kayfouroh, on 01/14/2009, -0/+8Wouldn't the Mac say to kill the dog, since it knows the secret?
- ungulate, on 01/14/2009, -1/+9Genius is a bit more complex than that. I've seen it be smart enough to play a slow, quiet song from a typically loud, noisy band because it fit the mood of the playlist. It seems to keep it pretty safe, mostly playing singles instead of album cuts. It also seems to have a fondness for remixes and live versions - I've seen a remix of a certain tune come up in playlists numerous times, but never the original. It seems like it actually gives preference to songs with parentheses in the track name.
- tidu, on 01/14/2009, -3/+11You've apparently never used it before. It does a fantastic job. Take a slow song from a band in one genre and it'll give you similar results from other genres... It's definitely a lot better than I expected.
