- hybrid8, on 10/11/2007, -30/+111so you want an iPhone minus the Phone? So you want an 'i' here take that one
- Lochie, on 10/11/2007, -3/+69A An?
- busch30pack, on 10/11/2007, -5/+55Sounds like a PDA to me.
- timo1023, on 10/11/2007, -2/+27If it doesn't have WiFi I'm going to be pissed.
- kg4gyt, on 10/11/2007, -0/+25Up the memory a bit and I would buy one, I don't want the tie in to AT&T. Cross the iPhone, the nokia internet tablets, and the iPod and thats one amazing piece of hardware.
- kcpwnsgman, on 10/11/2007, -0/+24it appears you ran out of question marks, have some more:
?????????????????????????????????????????????????? - pintomp3, on 10/11/2007, -0/+22when you can't decide, use both.
- revmitcz, on 10/11/2007, -2/+21I think we can safely put this in the "no *****?" file. The things getting dugg these days, I tell ya....
- jmpeagle, on 10/11/2007, -0/+13at least you are true to your ID
- davidrools, on 10/11/2007, -2/+13and add at least 12 more gigs of memory. solid state would be nice.
- acu8509, on 10/11/2007, -0/+11LOUD NOISES!!!!!
seriously, your 7/16" away from being taken seriously. - Crimsoneer, on 10/11/2007, -6/+15Wow. That was really bad.
- Gryffydd, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8Caps Lock is *not* cruise control for awesome.
- aussieNickuss, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8I would love an iPod with wifi and safari. When I want to look something up, I wouldn't have to go to and open up my laptop. I could just whip out my iPod and have a quick browse.
- Jimidoll, on 10/11/2007, -1/+8We all know it's coming later. This is just being redundant.
Don't expect it anytime so soon because Europe has yet to receive their iPhone, let alone Asia.
Why sell the iPhone-sans-phone iPod before the entire world has its chance with the iPhone? - Bklynadam, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7Yeah. I dugg you down before I saw your name was CAPTAINCAPITALS. Right on. You can still go to hell however.
- InferiorWang, on 10/11/2007, -1/+7or substitute both with BREAKING:
- axisofphilippe, on 10/11/2007, -3/+9"On the one hand it’s been suggested that Apple wouldn’t risk cannibalizing the sales of iPhones, on the other hand, according to an Ars Technical article, Jobs has indicated that if there’s going to be cannibalization of Apple it might as well be by Apple."
steve jobs is awesome. - jiub, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5And I just realized you can't block people from the comment page anymore.
Where did digg decide to hide that? - Trihedralguy, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6Ever since the iPhone came out I've been saying exactly this...If the next iPod had Wifi and a browser like the iPhone, I would buy it in a heart beat! I think that would be really neat, almost like a mini mac umpc! Except design to be portal, light weight, easy to just pop on safari and check email, news, etc. I think with the iPhone features, it would be a dream come true to have it without the phone.
- kendawg, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5Exactly. A PDA with a bunch of storage. That's what they have needed all along in order to survive, and as you can see, Dell's PDAs didn't survive.
- Alegoo92, on 10/11/2007, -4/+8Its not "perfect" (tho id love it)- cuz it makes controlling it without looking near impossible.
- bieber, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4Yeah, but what are the odds those gestures will work through my pants pocket?
- LoganT, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4I literally want the iPhone without the phone. I don't have that much music and I like to watch videos occasionally so a 4 or 8 GB iPhone without the phone would be amazing.
- thekronz, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4So many confusing things in that title.
For one thing, the perfect iPod is an iPhone...
Another thing, I don't know what "a an iPhone" is.
Why can't the title be like... "iPhone - Keep the iPod, throw out the Phone."??? - BESTenemy, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4Go on e-bay or Craig's list. Since PDA's are considered a dead end format, people are dumping them dirt cheap. Get one with WiFi, put skype on it and you've got yourself an iPhone with no contract. Wireless hotspots are pretty much everywhere nowdays. Download console emulators from NES to PS1 and you've got yourself a cheap PSP / Gameboy. MP3 player, DivX player etc. Everything but the multi-touch and can get a decent one for $200.
- turnthepage, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4Sir, please turn off the CAPS lock key and reconsider your purpose in the cosmos.
- nuudles, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3It could be completely gesture driven. Swipe up/down controls the volume. Swipe left right goes back/forward. Tap to play/pause. I think I could control something like that without looking.
- crazybrit, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Wow. You're the first person to ever suggest that an iPhone without the phone would make a good iPod.
- aazn, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3Yes, a PDA with WiFi, Video Playback, Music Playback, Leetness-in-a-device and you got yourself an iPDA
- HerrSchnuff, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2when you're old enough to drive you'll maybe know why...
- commnode, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2agreed, but it still is forced to the standard of technology: cheap, small, powerful. choose two
since the portability forces the small and the awesome things you mentioned require powerful, that sends cheap right out the door - TdiFFRob6876, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2The next iPod should have Bluetooth technology for wireless headphones/earphones... ooo Apple wireless headphones.
- Jrr6415sun, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2wow aren't you special. I think everyone who owns an ipod was thinking this.
- Bega, on 10/11/2007, -2/+4That's fantastic for a pda, but they want an iPod with proper pda functionality here; to have both you need a decently sized hard-drive/more flash, and to do that within the usual price-range of an ipod will take sometime. Don't see it happening at to the current drive sizes with flash until maybe 7th or 8th gen (if we're lucky).
- franklinbluth, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2If we got the widescreen-touchscreen ipod (a la the iphone now) a year ago, we would have been all over it. It seems like a lot of people are expecting wi-fi and safari on the new ipod. But having an iphone without the phone would eat away at iphone sales and having a new ipod without the wi-fi would disappoint people (not me though). Anyway, my 4G ipod just died recently... I will hold off on replacing it and see what Apple does next.
- TheSolomon, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2I hope you mean storage, because *damn* that would be a lot of memory for a solid state device. :-)
- TheSolomon, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3I think we're beginning to stretch the notion of an "iPod" here. The iPod is almost exclusively a music player. The iPhone has iPod functionality, plus Web & Email because both of those functions seamlessly integrate with the phone portion of the device. (Not only do they work using the AT&T Internet connection when out of WLAN range, but they also allow for the slick "see any number and tap it to dial" function.)
The iPod contains other "features" such as addressbook and calendar, but we all know those features are mostly a quick bolt-on by Apple, not requiring much thought or planning about the interface. The games portion of the iPods, I believe, were done more as an intermediate step, allowing Apple to figure out how to make the games work within a limited input device, plus testing the waters with regard to people paying for add-ons.
Essentially this "new iPod" everyone is dreaming about is another way of saying "give us the iPhone with absolutely everything, except one feature." I think this is unrealistic. Other people's comments about such a device just being a PDA are well taken. The iPhone is already a PDA, except with telephone features--similar to the Treos and such that seem to be leading the PDA-like market today. Apple already had a PDA, which received a luke-warm reception. I don't believe they have expressed an interest in getting back into that market.
Don't you think it's much more likely Apple would release an iPod with a widescreen-format display, touch screen controls, and coverflow views, sans Internet access & telephone? Sure, WLAN access is "just one more thing to add," but along with that you have to include the underlying changes to the OS to provide Safari and Email, etc., and then we're right back to an iPhone without voice & dialing.
Looking at it another way--assuming I'm correct about the widescreen touch screen iPod (without a phone and WLAN)--Apple offers two devices. One device is a music player, with ample storage and a great interface. The other is an Internet device & cell phone that also plays music, with much less storage and a great interface. If you want a music player, get the iPod. If you want an Internet-capable device, no problem: get an iPhone. - pintomp3, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2u have to bury the comment first (thumb down)
- TheTorontonian, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2I $600 Ipod? You are kidding right? That is like buying plane without tires.
- LeeSoong, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1What's Needed:
16:9 TRUE widescreen
80 GB & 160 GB models
Video OUT works again (disabled in iPhone)
WiFi or Bluetooth streaming of content from/to Mac & AppleTV
Web browsing, just like iPhone.
DVR support - record Dish/Cable/TV Directly into your iPod.
Anything less is a disappointment,
and ARCHOS continues to gain 'Switchers' -
iTunes anti-competitive proprietary DRM lock-in be damned. - matt.rubin, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1We'nt people going to be pissed if the 5G ipod wasn't touch screen?
- matt.rubin, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1dude
get a good archos that supports notebook hard drives.
I took an av300 and replaced the 20GB hard drive with a 180GB hard drive and its flawless......... holds divx 120 movies ;)
also uprgade the battery i can get about 8 hours of movie watching on a charge - matt.rubin, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1consitering Samsung just released 16GB Solid State chips they could put 32 GB in a nano. But from a business stand point it would be very expensive and they would want people to buy 8GB to make money then sell the 32GB.......

Got a deal on my treo650 around Christmas time on ebay and have loved it ever since. You can reflash the rom on those pretty easily to accept 4+ gig SD cards and it plays mp3s as well has having google maps and plenty of apps and games available.
- reflex, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1I wrote a piece called "The iPhone Smokescreen" in January, in which I pointed out that the traditional iPod risked losing market dominance, and "the real magic will happen when Apple releases a $299 version of the iPhone - the next generation iPod - that retains everything but the GSM + EDGE phone technology. At that point, the iPod will be perfectly positioned to become everyone's favorite teeny-tiny ultraportable computer."
http://www.retrothing.com/2007/01/the_iphone_smok.html - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2Stop channeling Clippy.
- cyberoidx, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2And in other news, Nokia stops using "Is this what computers have become today" tagline.
- jordandiggsit, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Believe it or not...
Apple won't cannibalize their iPhone sales because a bunch of digg cry babies can't afford an iPhone. Stop playing your World of Warcraft and get a job! - gadgetlust, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2Use the iphone interface and OS on the next ipod. Give it wifi, give it bluetooth. Release an SDK, let developers make real apps for it.
Give us our Skype, for crying out loud. -
