- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+30Allow me to be the first to actually comment on the article:
This isn't an article just about OS X and Apple. Yes they are referring to this platform but I assure you this issue is impacting and will further touch all platforms, including Windows and Linux. Applications that are sold off how pretty they are when they offer no new real functionality, and sometimes even less than the competition are something to worry about. When developers see programs like "Disco" sell well they are going to scrap their new ideas for the next great app, be it for Apple or Windows (or both, this is becoming much more common), or anything else, and start working on candying up the old ones.
Secondly when you see an article that refers to OS X on Digg, or any operating system that you don't use or have interest in, please don't bash it. I'm not a fanboy, I'm a computer user that uses Digg for my news, that happens to be running OS X. When I see Windows articles that have no impact on OS X I ignore them, I don't post Window fanboy comments. At the time I started writing this, every comment on the article, every single one had nothing to do with the article and everything to do with this pity issue. Not one of those people read the two articles this Digg is pointing at, for if they did they would realize how it impacts them as well. - escher, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13If you actually take the time to read both articles rather than bashing it for the topic, you'll find an apt analysis of not only the Mac development community, but also that it's a reflection--even a microcosm--of a larger societal shift from functionally and substance to aesthetics and entertainment.
- BabyBlueShoes, on 10/12/2007, -10/+21Is anybody else getting tired of the back slapping, glad handing and then tell the world about it by spamming digg these dream app boyz are doing.
Heh John, instead of digging Jason's story on making beautiful apps, how about finishing iClip 4 for a change. It's only been 18 months since you announced this world class artistic next version. I'm sure iClip 4 will be beautiful!
These peacocks at mydream app are running around telling the world how great they are and how beautiful their apps will be, but in case nobody has noticed
John C. - iClip 4 vaporware - it's been 18 months since it's coming soon
Jason - still can't make an Intel compatible app (Shape shifter)
Austin - I think this guy has dropped more unfinished projects then completed.
Yes that's right a peacock has beautiful feathers, but they also have the ugliest feet.
But Boy will MyDreamApps be beautiful - if and when they are ever done. - idesign, on 10/12/2007, -14/+22Notice that you can edit the topics you want to see in your preferences. Stop whining and just uncheck the apple box.
- mbabauer, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5I am developer, and I have to disagree with most here in that looks ARE important...
When most people look for a new car, do they look at the one that looks like a box, but is safe and gets 57mpg, or the one that looks sleek, has chrome tail pipes, and does 0-60mph in 4.3sec? Odds are, most people fantasies about BMW M3s, not Toyota Prius.
Looks are important. The feel of the UI is important. If you, as a developer, haven't put any though into its "wow" factor, well, you have obviously failed. Sex sales, get over it. This is true for clothes, cars, perfume, and even OSes. Just as Seth Godin preaches, people go to Tiffany's for the "blue box". The jewelery is free. If you wanted to change the world, you would figure out how to bottle that and use it to your advantage. - ho0ber, on 10/12/2007, -8/+11@dkoon
Then.... why are you here? - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Thats not very hard though is it.
- NSResponder, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3NeXTSTEP was the best system of its time, and there are a few things I stll miss (Workspace app and Lotus Improv, for example), but OS X is the result of several hundred man-years or so of improvements. As a developer platform, there's no comparison at all; OS X beats NeXTSTEP hands-down.

- mbabauer, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2For the most part, there isn't much that can't be done with a terminal that can be done in Vista. Linux console-only machines can type documents, view web pages, run multuple apps simultaniously, even view graphics. There is no reason to have graphical user interfaces at all other then to make things prettier. But, I don't see anyone rushing out to install linux consoles on their PCs.
- msson, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0If I had to choose between two applications with exactly the same functionality I would choose the one that is the most visually appealing to me. Sure I'm a graphic designer/junkie, but still, it's just so much more fun to use something pretty. :)

RTFA and STFU about fanboyism. If you don't like it, STFU and go away. If you do, post something intelligent. This is the first time I've only modded up for one post. WTF is the matter with digg now?
Regarding the article, isn't this something we've seen for years now? Selling a new product simply because it's pretty? See MS Office since '97, XP, Vista. I'm sure that the mac world has equivalents; I'm just a neophyte user so I don't know the history. Seems to me that NeXTSTEP was on par with OSX, mostly. Earlier today there was a post about a guy who demonstrated how there was really nothing new in Vista that can't be done in Windows 3.1.1. Our computers are getting faster and faster but their performance is decreasing constantly due to the prettiness that most users demand.
Any real comments? - xxNIRVANAxx, on 10/12/2007, -5/+5at least its better than the web 2.0 crap.
- nuclearpenguins, on 10/12/2007, -7/+2I'm digging you up not only because I ***** hate Apple and their retarded fans, but because I watched Return of the Jedi yesterday.
- FudgeNuggets, on 10/12/2007, -7/+2errrrr this write up was retarded, waste of cyberspace and I'm a Mac user btw....
- sockpuppets, on 10/12/2007, -17/+11Come, fanboi, see for yourself. From here, you will witness the final destruction of Apple and the end of your insignificant posts. You want to digg me down, don't you? The hate is swelling in you now. Click the red button. Use it. I am unarmed. Strike me down with it. Give in to your anger! With each passing moment you make yourself more my servant.
- shadownight, on 10/12/2007, -9/+1You're funny... Oooo, I feel hate, I'm a fanboy, death to Windows users, Aahhhh
