2010--iNuke, for the hip, artsy, radical dictator - colonels1020, on 10/11/2007, -9/+88They forgot the Mac Pro!
- TastyLamp, on 10/11/2007, -0/+58Spot the year Steve Jobs came back....
- Hickeroar, on 10/11/2007, -9/+56It's pretty obvious that Apple wasn't always doing very well in the "style" category. :-P They seem to have drastically improved things over the last several years....
- whatsupimphil, on 10/11/2007, -1/+33The elementary and middle schools I went to used Macs so I recognize a lot of the earlier ones.
- pintomp3, on 10/11/2007, -6/+36evolution? i thought macs were intelligently designed.
- mgilber1, on 10/11/2007, -2/+30Where is the Pippin?
- felchdonkey, on 10/11/2007, -0/+25That's bizarre that the photo they chose for the iconic Apple ][ was of the black Bell & Howell version. There must be a million great photos of the Apple ][ floating around, yet all they could find was a weird version that Apple made for someone else to rebadge?
http://oldcomputers.net/bellandhowell.html - blankjenova, on 10/11/2007, -3/+27Apple really took off after being invested by Forrest Gump and Lieutenant Dan.
- ksoon, on 10/11/2007, -3/+26Jon Ive should own half of Apple for basically pimp slapping the very concept of industrial design. Jobs owes him everything, pre 97 is just hideous.
- gblackbox, on 10/11/2007, -3/+24What part of "This image documents the ever changing form factor and industrial design of Apple's products, not every single model number or slight change made to a previous model." did you not understand?
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -2/+23Evolution is only a THEORY!!
- keiterk, on 10/11/2007, -2/+22He forgot one: The Macintosh Performa (around 1996 or 97' I believe). It was the first computer I got that had access to the internet (via TelePort and an ADB 14.4 modem).
Check out this wonderful machine here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Macintosh_Performa - ThankTheCheese, on 10/11/2007, -0/+19shows how far tech in general has come in a short time. From the black and white screens of the iPods in 2004 to the iPhone just 3 years later.
- slayerab, on 10/11/2007, -1/+20Well thats because Apple of the early 90's was run by a bunch of arbitrary busisness 'suits' who had no real regard for industrial design. I think its kind of cool how in the last 10 years, Apple shifted from that "Power" designation for business and bland beigeness to the stylish "Mac" and ipod stage we see now, where not only do you get a powerful machine, but you get a machine thats easy on the eyes, something the rest of the industry has tried and has generally fail to do, and apple has been consistently successful with over the last couple of years.
- gmprunner, on 10/11/2007, -1/+19Mighty Mouse is a regular two-button mouse (5 buttons total I believe).
- tracydanger, on 10/11/2007, -17/+34nice for a wallpaper
- ialan2, on 10/11/2007, -1/+17You're right, there needs to be an iPhone Shuffle!
Hit the button and iPhone shuffle calls your contacts randomly. - patrickloggins, on 10/11/2007, -0/+14Everyone: the description says explicitly that they weren't trying to get every model; just show the evolution.
- felchdonkey, on 10/11/2007, -3/+17You're kidding. Go back and have a look at the Apple //c, designed by none other than Frog Design. Even today, it's elegant. For that matter, compare the first Apple ][ with what was on the market then.
Sure there were some dogs - like the Mac Portable, the Quadras, the Centris - ok, anything from the Sculley/Spindler/Amelio periods - but when Steve Jobs has been at the helm, Apple has made beautiful products. - collinong, on 10/11/2007, -2/+14an interesting comparison would be the first powerbooks in 1991 compared to PC laptops of the same era. Now, that was a huge, gigantic gap in quality of design. the difference in the apple laptops was so obvious and made so much intuitive sense that it shocked the world how nobody had thought of simple things like moving the keyboard to the back so there could be wrist rests and the trackball up front. it's too back they couldn't patent that because everybody copied it and now its the standard configuration for all laptops.
but one thing i noticed was that there hasn't been much change in the laptop designs for years. the titanium powerbook in 2001 was the last major change and the aluminum powerbook in 2003 was an update to that and the form factor/design language hasn't changed much since all the way up to todays MacBook Pro. Same with the iBook, which changed radically with the iBook G3 in 2001 but stayed mostly the same through the iBook G4 and then the MacBook retains basically the same look but with the chicklet keyboard. I wonder if minimalism has reached its apex in that the design can't get any simpler so they have nowhere else to go with the laptop form factor. I hope they can shock the world again though. - aussieNickuss, on 10/11/2007, -2/+13Considering that those "ugly" products were actually quite beautiful in the 1980's. By todays standards, they look awful, but in their day, they were gorgeous.
- tofslie, on 10/11/2007, -3/+14This is not a listing of every model that came out, but more an exercise in showing the progression of the industrial design of the products.
- Darkhowling91, on 10/11/2007, -3/+14Ipod is 6 years old. Wow, I'm getting old.
- kingkilr, on 10/11/2007, -2/+13After the iMac went LCD they basically were perfect on everything.
- aussieNickuss, on 10/11/2007, -3/+13I only just realized the PowerMac/Mac Pro has hardly changed since 2003! Time for a new design me thinks.
- Hickeroar, on 10/11/2007, -2/+12They probably left it out since it looks just like the "Power Mac G5"
- lemurfemur, on 10/11/2007, -0/+10The Mac Cube was the coolest.. I love me some toaster-style CD slots.
- gblackbox, on 10/11/2007, -2/+11This issue has been dead for years...
- felchdonkey, on 10/11/2007, -1/+10The elementary school I went to didn't have any computers, though my junior high had a lab you could go to and use Apple ][s (and one TRS-80). It's bizarre for me to hear any Mac called "early." I don't think I saw a Mac in real life until at least 1989, when I got to college.
Damn, the world keeps getting younger. Damn kids, get off my lawn! - legioss, on 10/11/2007, -1/+10The best one was Apple I!
- RockinRoel, on 10/11/2007, -0/+9Scorch44, look at what gblackbox said. The average Joe can't tell the difference between a 1st and 2nd gen iPod.
- jaschen, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8Is it me or is the first apple product a wood podium?
They also miss the apple gaming console. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apple_Pippin - RockinRoel, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8I was going to say the exact same thing. Steve Jobs had ideas that drastically changed Apple. Luckily, these were good ideas, but Steve Jobs is the kind of man that can have really bad ideas too, you have to watch out with him. Of course you do have to credit the designers for the sleek look of Apple products ever since the iMac.
- octus, on 10/11/2007, -1/+8Silicon Heaven, of course.
- vladimus, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7Hideous? Have you *seen* what other PCs looked like in the late 80's and early 90's?
- santaliqueur, on 10/11/2007, -1/+8You missed the description of the link.
- Twoodge, on 10/11/2007, -3/+10"A great visual I created"
Modest, aren't you? :P Good work though! - slayerab, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7I thought Ive worked there since 1992?
- gordeaoux, on 10/11/2007, -1/+7mmmm delicious sarcasm
- Narfmaster, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6The Newton's right there under 1994.
- wilhoitm, on 10/11/2007, -1/+7No there two buttons now but it hidden! It is made to look like one button but can function as two! I guess Steve compromised!
- insidesource, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5Correct. Apple products were Intelligently Designed.
- turpenine, on 10/11/2007, -3/+8they put the logo on all the products, which is a weird habit for a company to have.
- RockinRoel, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6That would revolutionize your social relationships.
Why do you never call me?
I tried to, but I kept on calling my brother.
It keeps couples together and delivers wonderful (or nasty) suprises!
Here's my message: call a random person and chat with him, it'll be a lot of fun. (or not) - Puppetfunk, on 10/11/2007, -3/+8And when they make their super machine they'll call it the iApple and it will be shaped like a cat.
- slayerab, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5Don't get me wrong, I think the 80's apples were cool too, I just thought the time period where Jobs' influence was totally disregarded (pretty much after that second Mac Classic), design was really bad.
- tofslie, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4Read the description people, this shows industrial design changes... not every model.
- meatmcguffin, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5Apply liberally to Vista and you end up with a good OS. **
**not a guarantee - johnpowell, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4You are right.. I was wrong.
