- patch, on 10/12/2007, -4/+30I'm not sure what the point of the article was. Did anyone even catch the conspiracy? All I read was a rant of how microsoft does not work well with others and apple is too arrogant for its own good... Flamebait much?
- manova, on 10/12/2007, -1/+24Wow, that article rambled worse than Grandpa Simpson.
- consonance, on 10/12/2007, -5/+27Finally, Apple rumors have evolved into Apple conspiracy theories!
- donnydarko319, on 10/12/2007, -2/+15Firefox isn't owned by Apple.

Mac sales were up (28% year over year comparison). Sales were led by the tremendous upswing in sales of portables. Additionally, almost 50% of the people were identified as first time Mac purchasers.
as for the ads- the pc guy (john hodgman) is really funny. you can not help but like the guy - no matter what he is doing. the commercials are slowly shifting gears to take advantage of that fact. the new direction is basically letting the pc guy take the wheel as he points out Windows flaws and downfalls - and he does it in a way that is funny and endearing. - fyre2012, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12Yah...well...well... BestBuy and FutureShop are owned by the same company! CONSPIRACYZOR!!!one!1
- PDubNYC, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11Linux is only a threat to MS on the server side, which is still a big deal, and I have no idea what their strategy could be. It's hard to hit a multi-headed, ever-changing and improving target.
On the other hand, mainstream Linux on the desktop is a long ways away. The average user doesn't get the cool, easy to use apps that OS X provides, nor do they get the familiarity they like that Windows provides. In time, I'm sure things will change. But for now, I don't see Linux on the desktop reaching out of geekdom.
And that includes you installing it on your grandmother's machine, and now she has never been so happy. Think geek-free families. - RamanujanRedux, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11"The last time the meteors came, we thought the sky was on fire. Naturally, we blamed the Irish. We hanged more 'n a few. "
- cannibaljp, on 10/12/2007, -4/+11conspiracy theory time:
we know that the NSA had a hand in the building of Vista. what are the chances that the back end has anti-hacker tools that allow easier tracking? pinpointing the location of attacks and communicating those results to the NSA?
it would explain why bill gates is taunting hackers. he wants them to attack so that they can get busted. it'd be sort of like tommy lee jones in MIB waving his arms screaming "EAT ME!" - kickarse, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8Microsoft only feels that Linux is a real threat to Vista, and even then not so much. Mac OS X is NOT a threat, yet. Only if Apple decides to unlock the feature to install on other platforms. But then they might shooting themselves in the hardware foot. If they both keep themselves in the media's light mainstream consumers will choose either or and not a *nix or BSD variant.
- thewump, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Agreed. MaC it less competition because it is a hardware. specific OS .. a proprietary collection. To Microsoft, Linus is Scary because it runs on the pc architecture. People can switch to it with ease.
- whistlerpro, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5With all due respect Donny, nobody ever said it was.
- tcquad, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5The conspiracy is that Apple is purposefully holding back iTunes for Vista (and sending out dire warnings about Vista causing iPods to get bricked) to leverage the iPod market against Microsoft, like Microsoft (allegedly) leveraged control of the operating system against Netscape.
- pappas215, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Gates was on the grassy knoll
- paulmdx, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5"only 1998"? That's not far off a decade ago. /me feels old..
- raynevandunem, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3They've never competed in the same field until only recently.
Historically speaking, Apple sells hardware stacks, and Microsoft sells operating system stacks.
This means that Apple wins whenever you buy a new Mac (not when you buy a new Mac OS), and Microsoft wins whenever you buy a new copy of Windows (or a computer with Windows installed).
Plus, Microsoft one-ups Apple by possessing a slough of built-in web properties and services, including advertising through adCenter and MSN/Live Search.
Apple doesn't have a search engine, doesn't have an advertising service, and doesn't even have a single web service or application API of its own.
Hence, Apple operates at a lower level of the stack than Microsoft, while Google operates at a higher level of the stack than Microsoft.
This is why Apple has "Hi, I'm a Mac - Hello, I'm a PC" ads, not "Hi, I'm Mac OS X - Hello, I'm Windows/Linux/etc." or "Hi, I'm MacSearch - Hello, I'm Yahoo". - fuzzynyanko, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Wow are those Mac fans in the video uncomfortable. Actually it kinda made me uncomfortable. Steve and Bill talking nice to each other... it's like cats and dogs...
- nofxjunkee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3wrong meteorash: IE costs you a Windows license as it does not run on any other OS. That's like people saying Front Row is free. These things have costs, even if they are not apparent to everyone. One cannot run IE without a copy of Windows, which theoretically one should have purchased.
- donnydarko319, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6By simply acknowledging that Apple is even worthy of comparison, Bill Gates is helping Apple out. It makes the average PC user, who's never used an a non Windows computer his entire life, go "What's this Mac thing about?" Just like the Get A Mac ads. They could be horrible and still do their job, because when one company has a ninety percent plus monopoly on a product, simply mentioning a competitor will cause some people to check them out.
- boomboxer, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6Why does MS and its fans even care about apple? as a company, apple is nothing compared to MS. in reality, apple is the underdog, so what is percived as arrogance is relly just a play for attention, and it's working. by getting all worked up by apple's TV ads and "cool" factor, MS is just unnecesarily making themselves look bad and playing right into Apple's hands.
a fight that appears to be on level playing field is advantageous to apple, since the reality is that playing field is not level --- MS dominates the market and shouldn't even lend apple the appearance of being competitive. - chijim70, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3They just keep the debate and fuss fed in hopes you pick either. It's just like the Dems and Reps... they would really hate it if you actually voted a 3rd party in so they keep the partisan fires flamed.
- bleutuna, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6That video is so awesome. Never get tired of watching it. Particularly the part where Steve says, "We have to get rid of the notion that for Apple to win, Microsoft has to lose."
Apple should remember that today. They're too arrogant. As are their fans. - jspegele, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2yea, but firefox is free and it doesn't bend you over on a daily basis
- SirBotchness, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3To make you ask that question. Yea microsoft was thinking "how could we stick it to apple? HOW ABOUT DELAYING RELEASE" when making vista. You're right, damn, you're good.
- maclive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4This is a conspiracy theory?
- meatmcguffin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Mac Mini? In some cases they can be cheaper than a copy of Vista Ulitimate edition.
- NewChar, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3"...but I can still eat corn on the cob, if someone cuts it off and smushes it into a fine paste. Now, that's good eatin'."
- evmace, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I agree -- I couldn't get through the article because it was so poorly written.
- MacParrot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I guess that would depend on what you consider to be "reasonably priced". Macintosh prices are close to the same price for most of their line comparably speaking. Yes, you can buy a cheaper Dell/HP/whatever, but it isn't like it was in the PPC days where the line was blurred between cost and performance because of the different architecture. Apple doesn't sell a cheap Mac like WinPC makers do. They have a relatively low cost solution (Mac mini), but it isn't like that is your typical ultra-cheap last gen Intel/AMD bargain box. Also remember that they have much higher R & D costs due to supporting their own OS.
Apple also charges too much IMO for add-ons like memory or Hard Drives upgrades. Why? Because they can. My chiropractor recently bought a Mac Pro and outfitted it with the 2 TB Sata HD right from the Apple Store and paid an ungodly amount for it. I was astounded and asked him why. He said it was because he could afford it and didn't want to bother otherwise.
I wish Apple did have a lower cost 2CD tower. I think there is a big market for something like this and it amazes me that Apple doesn't see it. Maybe once they get this iPhone stuff out they can think about expanded Mac products. - socalrob, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4The article was lame but the video was great. It took me back to a time when computers were not so mainstream, no RIAA lawsuits, people enjoyed their computers and thats what mattered. And seeing Bill Gates talking at a Macworld conference, and how the Mac Fanboy's were yeah like you said trying not to boo, thats classic. Also was the $150million investment by Microsoft into Apple and the people still boo'd. How different would things be today if there wasn't that investment? No iPods maybe? No OS X? Who knows.
- SirBotchness, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Well that article was horrible, the only part that was at all interesting was the Keynote video. Yea the companies might have gone back to that ideology that for one to succeed one must fail (as seen by the TV ads and apple warning people not to buy vista cause of itunes). Though Microsoft still puts office on a mac. itunes, quicktime and photoshop are available for windows. People need to understand that MS makes software, Apple makes software and hardware. There isn't much competition for those products. Sure there is fanboy competition, but each company makes products that people buy.
- raynevandunem, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2No, actually I was insinuating that Microsoft had to wait until Apple moved to Intel.
Maybe it was a deal or something, I dunno. But the timing of how it all happened is highly suspicious, since people were going all ape-***** over OS X and why Microsoft had not been releasing a new version of Windows by their customary approx-2-year cycle (Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows ME, Windows 2000, Windows XP).
So why is it that Microsoft waited from the time that OS X debuted to the time that it went Intel to release Vista?
The decision to do so just didn't make any sense. They could've released it back in 2003, when it was first being previewed within MSDN.
Again, why did they wait for those 5 years? - yesno, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It's fun to watch those ads, well it's not fun for Apple when many people don't even know what Mac is. Those ads are there for peoples knowledge.
- drthipp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1so basically, microsoft and apple need to stop being their own fanboys
- marillion, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The Microsoft / Apple conspiracy? As if there is only one to choose from. Over the years there have been so many.
- boomboxer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1^ I agree with eveything you just said, but what's your point?
- mikew101, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I think they waited because they didnt have a stable ready to release product.
Keep in mind your talking about an operating system that at the time was touting a database like filesystem.
They never did create that filesystem. Thats why they waited to release it takes time to write code. Preview versions are lacking a lot of features. - mikew101, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Apple does have the .mac online service which is like a competitor to hotmail only it costs
- chron, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"...ever since kindergarten it wasn’t nice to point out others weaknesses..."
Um, excuse me, but I thought these two companies were, well, companies, competing in the world of business, like, you know? - Langhorn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I love the fact that Apple isn't affraid of coming off a little arrogant and overly confident, I mean, why shouldn't they? They make the best computers on the market and some of the most beautiful products in the world, and they're proud of that...
- sleepwalkers, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3This perfectly explains the pissing match between Apple and Microsoft, and there's one line every fanboy (regardless of platform) should heed: "Both companies have a lot to contribute; a pissing contest isn’t productive or a contribution. It’s just fun to watch."
- Szandor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"they are not doing their job. Go check the Mac sales for the last quarter. "
Oh, you mean the straight-out-of-my-ass sales statistics? - drunkenoaf, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Ah, but Apple wrap Konqueror up as Safari. This might be more important once the iPhone appears, than it is now.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@manova
true that !
The only good part of that article was the video - DanielNielsen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Conspiracy, not so much!
- nofxjunkee, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Dude from the sounds of it you have used neither Safari nor Konqueror, and know not of WebKit and KHTML.
- boomboxer, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I don't really think apple needs MS Office... but it's true, MS did help save Apple. man, apple was grabage back then
- Insanitation, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'm sure Microsoft and Apple have no problems with each other. Its just all the press and people on the net thinking up conspiracy theory's to get attention or to convince themselves that they made the right purchase. They are both rich and are going to stay that way for a long time.
- bdizzlefizzle, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1This is such a horribly written, incoherent piece of garble. I'm not a Mac fanboy, but not not one. I'm not saying if Apple is right or MS is or whatever. Just that the article was such crap and hard to follow, how on earth did it ever deserve to make the front page?
- Spacetop, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0All I heard is "bitch bitch bitch" towards Microsoft.. I tell you if their roles were reversed and OS X had the dominating share on the market, all you would hear is bitching about Apple. People bitch about whatever is the mainstream. Nothing is good enough for the masses.
