- Chaucer, on 10/12/2007, -3/+31I hope Apple listens. I've returned my MBP twice and still it whines and gets too hot. I was told that "it was normal." Whatever.
They shouldn't have even released a laptop that has these problems. I will be calling on this day! - sportman, on 10/12/2007, -9/+31Nothing is ever normal. That statement includes my face.
- uptown, on 10/12/2007, -4/+24Hope you guys like on-hold music...
- RadicalBender, on 10/12/2007, -4/+17Oh how I wish I had a brand new laptop to complain about.
- gamabunta, on 10/12/2007, -5/+17So we propose to end the computer's whining with our own?
Ironic. - koweja, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14"beta testing a 1.0 release"
You don't beta test 1.0 releases. You beta test beta versions. - kkapoor, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12I have a brand new week 16 MBP. 17 is the latest. Week 18 production starts today. I have the whine. I don't really have a heat issue but I would like the whine to be sorted out.
- lsinger, on 10/12/2007, -3/+13Having owned 3 (three) MBPs (all returned because of whine, now waiting for my refund) I can assure you that there are some that get extremely hot, while others get "normally warm/hot". It *is* an issue.
- Rowen7, on 10/12/2007, -4/+14Being a consultant, its a shame I must recommend to all my clients NOT to get a macbookpro. Over heating, whining, and more. It's a few revisions off before coming to rival the old PowerBook's stability.
- android8675, on 10/12/2007, -11/+21Geez while you're at it why not sign an "online" petition... that'll teach em.
- asdfer, on 10/12/2007, -4/+14I talked to a few Apple's own technicians regarding the heat and they said that it shouldn't be that hot. As for the whine, one of them said that they're working on it.
- Retrograde, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12So that it's a united effort. The more there are, the more powerful the results.
- gleem, on 10/12/2007, -4/+13Oh please... that is like saying, "I just bought a Ferrari and everything is great except the steering wheel shakes at 40 mph." For the amount of money that people spend on a macbook pro, its not money that most people have the luxury of just throwing around. I admit that the direction that apple is taking is great, but I too would want the problem fixed.
- gookie, on 10/12/2007, -4/+13Hahah. So you're buying a MBP before the 20th then join the whine day. You're awesome.
- syclonefx, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10I just bought the 15" 1.83ghz Macbook Pro 3 days ago and it doesn't get any hotter than any other laptop I have used or owned. I haven't heard any whine from it.
- albertsf, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10I agree Apple has screwed it this one up. We shouldn't even have to wait tell May 20Th, Apple should live up to it's reputation and fix them for free. I mean when my IPOD kept freezing they replaced it just like that. If apple wants to get any were in the hardware market they need to show good support. Something that most company's lack.
- havaloc, on 10/12/2007, -4/+11I just tested a Dell Inspiron E1505 with Dual Core processor and discovered it's both quiet and cool. Even running the Quake 4 Demo didn't phase it.
- timmclargehuge, on 10/12/2007, -10/+17SO you're going to buy a product that has been reported to have a lot of problems with it and then complain and be disappointed when it has the same problems that were reported?
Oh, right, this is Apple. You gotta pay your tribute to your master. - Rice, on 10/12/2007, -5/+12Urr... Perhaps when hardware comes out, it shouldn't have flaws like these.. no matter what revision.
It's unacceptable and your attitude is arrogant and pisses me off. - IcanFLY, on 10/12/2007, -4/+10Why don't they just call it "Start the whine day"? I'm sure the apple user's whine a lot louder than their laptops do.
- nedzalife, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9rev 1 of the product's design and performance, IMO, is actually fine, they just gobbed the thermal paste on waaay to much on the CPU, GPU and chipset. The heat, instead of being transfered to the heatpipe, is being transfered BACK TO THE CHIPS, causing the cooling fans NOT to kick in, cause their sensors come from the heatpipe, not the chips themselves. That's been the only flaw, and its an unfortunate manufacturing mistake...
- mgnyc11, on 10/12/2007, -4/+9If you really want to take some action, get some 3rd degree burns from you Macbook. Go to a hospital. 3-4 of these and a massive recall will be ordered by the government. Problem solved.
P.S. While I sympathize with you, I appreciate you beta testing a 1.0 release. I am waiting for the next gens to come out, because I knew they would have these issues. - HobbesDoo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7I went with a Mac mini for now until they release the Powermac replacements. I read so many bad things about the MacBook Pros I decided they were not worth the 3000 bucks. At least not until they fix these issues that affect so many users. I'm not particular fond of Apple's response to these users' complaints either. It's a bit scary to spend that much money and be stuck with a product with issues Apple says it's "normal". Not impressed. I think people should call them not only on May 20 (I doubt many people will get through anyway), but why not call them more often, like once a week?
- jclicky, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Seems like people are blaming poorly applied thermal paste for these issues
http://home.sc.rr.com/mixedbag/MBP/Welcome.html
Why doesn't apple release some kind of public statement?
EDIT: Here's all I could find on Apple support
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=30612 - PathDaemon, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Read Consumer Reports. It absolutely has a better-than-average reputation.
- kleedrac, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6I take offense to that as a North American citizen and Apple employee working the tech support line. We're not *all* in India. That said I've got the 20th off so go nuts :)
- Rice, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6You're lucky... I've gone through three MBP's and well.. the third one just went in today for repair.
- mccarron, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Maybe the date so late in the month will give Apple some incentive to get the fixed by that date.
- spiderland, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8If you're having a problem with your computer, why wait 19 days to call?
- Retrograde, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8Actually, a lot of people with the newer MBPs are still having issues with them. Check out the links in that article - one guy had to reapply thermal paste.
Also, should Apple have even released the laptops if they were having so many issues? I don't think so. - staticuxo, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8i am also going to be purchasing a macbook pro for next semester.
i do not want to spend $3000 on a machine that has heat and whining problems. these problems need to be addressed and fixed. being, that i'm a poor art student, it's going to be hard to afford it.. i don't want to make the situation more difficult than it should be by having to get it replaced multiple times before finding a decent one. - enderu, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Everything 1.0 is really a beta test these days. Everything is rushed to the market because it's so competitive these days, so yes, things certainly do move along faster, but then there are situations like there we get to deal with.
- Jimzip, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6I bought a 1st gen MBP, and it's run beautifully so far. No whine. Sure it gets hot, but what laptop doesn't? It only gets hot if you really put it through the ringer, and though I do that often, it's on a desk, so it doesn't matter. How often do you render 3D animations while you're sitting on the bus?
I understand these problems are annoying, but they aren't enough to make me sue or complain.. Then again, it seems enough to make others do it. This will be interesting.
Jimzip :D - nigeltufnel, on 10/12/2007, -5/+9I'm tired of the heat and whining from MacBook owners who can't pick up a phone or go to an Apple Store on their own.
You're still under warranty, for crap's sake.
Next up: the class-action suit, where the MacBook owners get $50 off an iPod while the lawyers get millions. - maverick808, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I returned two MBPs because they both overheated and had two whines (display inverter and CPU). I've had my third MBP for over a month now and although it runs cool and doesn't have the very loud and very annoying display inverter buzz it does have the quite annoying CPU whine.
I'll definitely phone on the 20th. - grendelboogie, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7I've had my MBPro for 6 weeks and no issues.
- ctheory, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Finally, a post I can agree on.
I have to say, being a field repair tech on PC's lately is really getting tiresome with spyware removals. That alone, is just about worth trying out a new widescreen iMac, if I wasn't poor. - inactive, on 11/04/2008, -3/+6a) If you don't own a whining, overheating MacBook Pro, you shouldn't be posting comments here.
b) Would you ***** off about all the Apple-fanboyism? I'm FAR from an Apple fanboy. This is my first ever Apple product - I even despise the iPods - but I've got a 15" MBP that overheats and whines like hell.
c) "Apple users are real idiots" -> Have you ever looked at your average Windows user? "OMG COOL SCREENSAVER I'M GONNA INSTALL IT!!!"
d) nesues -> If you buy a house and its got problems, do you say, "***** IT! There's kids in Uganda with no homes, so I shouldn't complain!". If you buy a car and its got problems, do you say "***** IT! I'm not driving in the F1 or anything". If you buy ANYTHING and it's faulty, do you just sit there and accept it? Maybe if it's faulty 6 months, 12 months, even later down the line, but not RIGHT AFTER PURCHASING IT. It's not DOA, just FOA (Faulty on Arrival).
e) "More proof of Apple's terrific rigid/non-upgradable crappy "new" hardware." -> If you buy an expensive Mercedes, don't you have to replace it with expensive Mercedes parts, not generic Ford parts?
f) Absolutely SICK TO DEATH of the "early adopter" argument. Are you ***** kidding me? You think that's a reasonable explanation for what seems to be a somewhat widespread problem? What is we weren't dealing with a laptop. What if the faulty item was a fridge? Or a TV?
g) Apart from these 2 problems which seem easily fixed, there is NOTHING ELSE WRONG with these machines on a wide scale. These are not "beta versions". If they were, how do you explain people having early models with no problems? It's faults in the manufacturing process that aren't being picked up by Quality Control, or are being ignored in order to meet demand. A cooler, no whine MBP is definitely NOT a "beta", and for those that argue it is, I would provide you with no sympathy if you indeed buy a "version 2" MBP that ends up having its own set of problems.
The truth is we don't know how widescale the problem is, since not everyone who gets a MBP that has problems ends up coming on to forums and posting about it. However, Apple needs to be put under pressure, because as of now, hardly ANY major news outlets have written articles about disgruntled owners, and so Apple is happy to just keep selling these units while they can. When they get enough negative attention by people who DON'T SIT ON THE NET ALL DAY READING TECH SITES, that is when we will see a shift in attitude.
I'll call if it eventually helps Apple realise they can't stop acting like we're made of money and don't care what we throw our money at. - kram, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Yes sir, I'll go tell apple right now.
- n3il89, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4same here...I just bought mine about 1-2 weeks ago...it barely makes any noise and it doesn't get that hot (beyond average) i did digg this though just because i think apple should fix the earlier macbook pros that the early adopters bought
- Swift2, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Is everybody buying the 17" Mac Book Pros, fully loaded? That's a $3000 machine, when you include Applecare. But MacBook Pros start at $1999,
- nigeltufnel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Apple has an incredible reputation for customer service.
But you don't care, koshak, because the truth would interrupt all your glorious hating. - Sefirosu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I have had absolutely no problems with mine. It gets hot like a normal laptop, not what I would call "abnormally" hot and the fans in my Mini and my older Toshiba are both louder than the MBP...
Anyway, if you have real troubles with your machine, complain and get it fixed. However, I have a hard time believing that EVERYONE has problems with their MBPs like some would like us to believe, I'd be really surprised if that was the case even for first revision machines. Apple is certainly not in a special case with these... every company has glitches with their products, but this "my MBP whines" seems to have gotten out of hand somewhat to me... - WalterDirt, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5May 20th Apple Care:
"We will email you one coupon for a chocolate squishy, Thank You, come again." - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I don't understand why it's a problem, it's still operating under spec isn't it? Whine whine whine.
- sgtstadanko, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2hmmm....mine works fine. Have had it since early March and no whine. Sure its a lil bit toasty on the bottom, but not as bad as some other metal shelled notebooks I have had.
- REpler, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2My thoughts exactly.
Of course, I don't own one. lol - Claymore, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3man... the "user whine"/"computer whine" jokes are funny every time I read them. Good stuff... original... keep it up...
- Gurubanks, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I doubt Apple is completely unaware of this problem. Clogging up their help lines would only hurt other Apple computer owners. Like the article says, the forums are full of complaints about the MBP. This is the beauty of capitalism, if Apple wants to stay in business, they're going to need produce quality products.
I'd suggest a call-in day for Windows XP. Now THERE is something to have a protest about. That's why I switched to OS X. -
