- bbrosemer, on 10/12/2007, -3/+58More importantly your a girl on Digg...
- onebigword, on 10/12/2007, -2/+51There should totally be a flickr tag for this.
- SuperMoonMan, on 10/12/2007, -2/+34"Anything comparable for windows?"
Duh.
http://img97.imageshack.us/img97/5096/picture1pp2.jpg - doubleblack, on 10/12/2007, -1/+26I don't have a Mac, and am not a huge Mac fan...but I have to admit this is pretty cool...
- dustedbunny, on 10/12/2007, -7/+29This is brilliant.
I can just see the numerous picturse that would show up. Probably of me because I mis-typed my log in or something. haha.
I'm getting a macbook pro in January for school. This is going to be my first ever Mac purchase. Im excited. (Yes, I'm a PC girl who's switching to mac.) - bbrosemer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+22Can this be made so that it can send an email as well whenver there is an invalid login attempt...? That would be pretty damn useful, and maybe an IP if they are connected to the internet...
- Slovenian6474, on 10/12/2007, -1/+21...a picture of your face is also your password.
- Gryffydd, on 10/12/2007, -1/+18@bbrosemer
Yes it can, the beauty of a Linux/Unix shell :) - antoniojvr, on 10/12/2007, -8/+22ORLY?
- forchilli, on 10/12/2007, -3/+17thats really cool actually
- Slovenian6474, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11"I saw a special on the NSA. They use facial recognition on their PCs. It can tell the difference between a picture and a person. However, it could be fooled with a *very* high quality mask."
Hmm, very interesting. If i had that software and camera on my pc and someone was to go to the length of making a *very* high quality mask of me, i think i'd just let them have the laptop. But someone i don't think Apple would incorporate such highend software and cam. - kevnaca, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10...and the iMac.
- cocoamix, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12"What would be really interesting is if Apple brings back "my voice is my password" with the iSight. My face is my password."
Didn't you ever see "The Fly?"
You don't want to be in a situation where you can't log in because your face and voice have changed. - mikeatlas, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9yes it works on a MacBook too.
- Zippo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9...and probably any other Mac with an external iSight camera. Could be wrong, though.
- merreborn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9"...a picture of your face is also your password."
I saw a special on the NSA. They use facial recognition on their PCs. It can tell the difference between a picture and a person. However, it could be fooled with a *very* high quality mask. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Heh...if you've gone through a teleportation chamber with a fly and exchanged genetic characteristics with it you've got a lot worse problems than whether or not you can log into your MacBook. ;-)
- ayeroxor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Hi. My name is Werner Brandes. My voice is my passport. Verify me.
- Tarmas, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7You obviously never used this feature.
When your voice is not recognized, you are presented with a regular login/password dialog. - dimension89, on 10/12/2007, -9/+15NO WAI!!
- m4v1s, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9SOB! you beat me to it. I'm sure Apple or an individual is already working on that.
- dustedbunny, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7b3mus3d,
Apparently you've either been digging through my comments looking at the select few in which I have mentioned I am indeed female...or you dont read many of my comments at all. Interesting. Because I rarely mention it unless its one of those "sex" related articles. Because me talking about female sexual things and having everyone assume I'm a guy, well, I'd rather spare people the horror you know? - rideagain, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5How are the two different? It's easier to list the ways they are identical: none. I suggest you read the article.
- mklopez, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5The instructions on the post are a little cryptic for someone who is not familiar with the shell interface. Lifehacker just posted a better description on how to set this up:
http://www.lifehacker.com/software/isight/take-isight-pics-of-invalid-logins-221262.php
and no, I dont consider it blog spam when the blog post is far better than the original link :) - mikeatlas, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6I'd really like to be able to automatically email these to myself
- Kypt, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Yeah, but I don't think the iSight's picture quality is enough to detect the difference from a person to a picture of the person. Still neat idea though.
- monkeyrun, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Apple tried the voice as password before (in OS8 - OS9), and it works, but no one really uses it.
- wwwdeveloper, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Note to self:
Cover iSight with my iSock before entering passwords on somebody's MacBook. - meatmcguffin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Added bonus!!!
Enable folder actions for the folder the pictures end up in (var/log/authfail) and add the new items script to it
When you login successfully, a window will pop up and inform you that you have new pictures of sneaky people - brianez21, on 10/12/2007, -9/+13YA RLY!!
- scubakyle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4How do I install this?
I'm kind of new to the Mac, and I'm having problems installing this. Any help? - mogus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4If they had two iSights, or a movable prism to split the image and offset the sight, you could have a stereo pair of images that you could use to make a 3D model that would probably more accurate for Biometric ID. That would solve the picture problem because the picture would be 2D.
- BobbyShaftoe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3That so Cryptonomicon! I love it.
Now if you can only make RAM out of a pipe-organ and brake fluid... - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Can one of you uberterminalgeeks make a simple app that can people can do this without opening the terminal?
- trylleklovn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I have problems with this also. The comment on the article page also states the same problem.
I get everything installed allright, and I can see the failed attemps in the log file, but there are no pictures where it says they are... If anyone figures out what to do, please post it! - redrabbit, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3i dont know how to use terminal so I enabled hidden folders by pasting this in the terminal:
defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles TRUE
killall Finder
to undo, use:
defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles FALSE
killall Finder
and it worked like a charm
now i'm trying to figure out how to change the path of where the images go
i will try to use automater to email these photos in a bit - pinkgreenblue, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I feel like a newb but I can't understand those instructions. I don't have write permission in libexec even though I'm the administrator (the only user on the computer) and I don't know where to find the opt folder. I'd love to try this out so please clarify for us techno-newbs who want to know. Thanks!
- AllnightChemist, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3And when you catch her, do it again with a sign on your face that says:
Welcome to Dumpsville.
Population: You!
At least it'd be creative... - gropo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@Tarmas
What, then, am I to do when my fingers have been replaced by horrible claw appendages?
Gotta think these things through, man! - scubakyle, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3ok...I figured it out. It is the HD where those folders are located and most already exist but are just hidden. I used Go - Go to Folder to go to the folders I needed and ran the command in terminal. I pulled up the screensaver and then tried to log in (with an incorrect password) and it worked like a charm.
- b3mus3d, on 10/12/2007, -6/+8Every comment I've ever seen you make mentions the fact that *gasp* you're a girl.
We get it already! Why do you keep saying it? - edge001, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2here it is... but it seems the guy took the pictures down from flickr.
http://digg.com/apple/Covert_MacBook_photos_from_inside_Apple_repair_facility - Justin6512, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I can't seem to find where it saves the pictures too. Any help?
- PFinn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I am new to macs and do not understand any of the instructions... can someone send me an explanation of how to install with steps that i would actually understand?
- edge001, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3there was somebody that posted a similar story/idea a few months ago. i searched but couldn't find it. but i think he had it taking a picture every time it booted up and it when email them to him. he sent it off to apple for some repairs and it mailed him all these random pictures of people working on it... anybody else remember that?
- datcrazydj, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5I know it says MacBook Pro and all, but can we do this on a regular MacBook?
- redrabbit, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1How is this different from iAlertU?
- meatmcguffin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1And don't digg me down because it says the same in one of the articles comment's - i just wrote that!
:P - meatmcguffin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1That's fine. I only replied because at the time of the first comment i hadn't added the comment to macosxhints.
But anyway thanks for contributing such a friendly, useful, helpful comment.
Mind if i digg you down? -
