- dlcarter, on 10/10/2007, -5/+21The iPhone is slowly becoming an even more brilliant machine, thanks to the hackers.
- TheSavageNation, on 10/10/2007, -6/+16It's so sad that this phone is not 3g. :-(
- streak, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7If you've ever seen AT&T's international calling rates, you'll know right away "why". With VoIP, access to a Wi-Fi hotspot suddenly provides cheap or free international calling. I would bet that Apple agreed with AT&T not to provide VoIP, though. And this might be one reason Apple hasn't provided an SDK.
- CCB0x45, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Yes of course it would apply, the toolchain is basically just an arm compiler using class dumped headers from the iPhone frameworks, an SDK would provide documentation on top of this as well as a more complete environment, but the programs wouldn't change at all.
- dlcarter, on 10/10/2007, -2/+7I would love VOIP on my iPhone. Since unlimited data is only $20, VOIP means I can drop down a plan in minutes by making most of my calls using the data plan.
- streak, on 10/10/2007, -6/+11Actually, it isn't sad at all. The iPhone has a 620 MHz processor that is faster than perhaps any 3G phone's right now. (Let us know if any other phone even comes close). That speed makes up for much of the slowness that EDGE has been known for. The accuracy of the iPhone's rendering of HTML makes up for the rest--if it happens you do have to wait for a page to load, you can be confident that the page will actually look right and be functional.
- streak, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6Not quite. The HTC Advantage falls in the class of "Mobile Tablet" and is even larger than some UMPCs. To top it off, the Advantage isn't available yet. The price isn't known yet either, but it's likely to be well over $1,000.
The iPhone has a real 3.5 mm jack, albeit recessed. One minute using a pocket knife was all it took to adapt my Bose QuietComforts to the recessed. (Contrast this with the HTC 8525, which uses a mini-USB port for headphones!) - CCB0x45, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Mikesbaker is a moron.. however dlcarter I highly doubt you are going to get good VOIP using edge, I really think it will only be useful over wifi... and this could be a good voip phone for people that don't want ATT service, since you can unlock the wifi features.
- DCMacHead, on 10/10/2007, -2/+5Neat stuff, but I'm a technotard so I'll wait until I've either got time to learn it or a GUI install program comes out.
- streak, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Hah, hah, don't be too upset, but businesses really do try to avoid unnecessary expenses, as do families. A smart phone with Wi-Fi and VoIP provides a great way to make cheap international calls. It's convenient and doesn't require carrying a laptop.
- jgarland79, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3VoIP on the iPhone is as far away as compiling freeswitch with the iPhone toolkit. freeswitch.org
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3VoIP would be over wifi, so you wouldn't need to use your min, and for international calls, you would be at the voip rate cheap/free to some areas through skype.
- gcnaddict, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4Shhh! This is apple territory, remember? The fanboy mongrels will hit you upside the head with boulders.
- Me1000, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3How do you know how much AT&T pays apple? neither company said anything...
Stop talking out of your ass! - zweben, on 10/10/2007, -3/+5I'm surprised how fast they're progressing with this.
Does anyone know if the knowledge and practice that the hackers are getting on iPhone programming would apply to an official Apple API at all?
I'm pretty convinced that Apple is going to release an official API soon, they've hinted heavily towards it in their statements on the matter, and it seems like a waste if hackers are going to start making all these apps if they're going to become obsolete as soon as Apple choses to open the platform. - listrophy, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3I'd really like the ability to record my phone calls so I can prove in court that my cable company consistently lies to me. I suppose it'd be cooler to bust AT&T in a similar situation, but I personally do not have a beef with them. Yet.
- tracydanger, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2I won't be surprised if most of these hacked features end up coming out as firmware updates and I imagine most people expect that too, but hackers are in if for the fun of it and also people just want every feature right now - so I wouldn't consider it a waste of time. It would just be nice if apple came out with a substantial update soon and hackers could work on stuff other than features that should've been there in the first place. I mean, come on, a voice recorder? It should've been there on Day One. But props to TUAW anyway.
- colincornaby, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Another reason that stuff is progressing so quickly is because the iPhone's API's are written in Cocoa, so a lot of developers can re-apply a lot of what they know about Cocoa to the iPhone.
- shawnz, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2how exactly does processor speed make your internet connection faster?
also: most pocketpcs are 600mhz as well, and they've been out for ages. - SPECOPS, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3Typo maybe? It's 624 Mhz processor (unless it has been upgraded in the last 30 days).
- CCB0x45, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2great source... "People close to the companies".. because we all know all the apple rumors out there are completely true!!! I can't believe you posted that terrible source.
- mmxtreme, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Well J2ME is pretty cool I have to agree, but the iPhone API contains some stuff that has never seen before. That's what I'm mostly interesting in.
- MonkeyFarts, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2Hey, it could be worse. The iPhone could be just like my wonderful phone: the Motorola C139. It comes complete with a clunky "interface," text messaging and phone functionality, ringtones that sound like they come from a 1980's arcade game, and an alarm clock, all for $20. Oh, and it takes about 5 minutes to gather a signal after you turn it on or leave a no-signal area. Great phone. I simply love it.
- Terc, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1If it were just that simple.
It'll need a GUI, and will need to be set up to work with the correct devices on the phone. I'm not saying it wont happen, but right now the apps compiled for the phone are simple for a reason. The toolkit is still very picky. - JamesWilson, on 10/10/2007, -3/+4Port Skype, and a SIP app.
- mmxtreme, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Notwithstanding very unlikely VOIP software, the voice recorder all alone is great and it shows what the hackers can do with the API at this point. I'm pretty sure that by the end of august the API will be fully documented and we'll see some pretty amazing stuff.
- Firehed, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Indeed. I'm expecting the Skype app, if/when it shows up, to go offline when you're on EDGE - there's just not enough bandwidth reserved. Just give everyone your SkypeIn number, and have it forward to your cell number when you appear online (ie, when you're on EDGE). That way, whenever you're within range of a hotspot, you get almost free calls that don't cut into your minutes, and chances are even the heaviest talkers can get away with the cheapest $40/mo voice plan. Or not bother with SkypeIn and call forwarding, use it for outgoing only, and save the cash.
- Terc, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Yup, we all want VoIP so we can use the cellular network to make phone calls... wait, I can already do that.
Oh, we want VoIP so we can get free long distance... wait, I already get that.
cvxdes, VoIP would be used so we wouldn't have to use our minutes when we have a perfectly good wifi connection available.
It would also be extremely handy during international trips, if you can find wifi, you save yourself a buck or two a minute. - streak, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Are these the same sources that claimed 1 million iPhones were sold the first weekend?
I do believe something about the iPhone, either now or in the future, will involve periodic payments, although not necessarily from AT&T. Otherwise, Apple could not justify its distributing revenue for the device over 2 years. Apple is accounting AppleTV revenue the same way, and it has no subscription services yet, so the iPhone might not be bringing anything to Apple on a periodic basis yet either. In the end, this highly unusual accounting methodology might all be a gimmick with nothing really associated with subscriptions, and intended to offset development expenses early on against profits from very profitable sectors, and later offset less-stellar revenue in those other sectors against revenue from these new devices. - dimsum05, on 10/10/2007, -6/+7The HTC Advantage has a 642 MHz processor... not to mention WiFi, BT, 3G, GPS, 5 in. 640x480 screen, "real" 3.5mm jack...
Although it's not the most attractive thing out there... it still does the job. - plagiats, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1remember intel's pentium III commercial ? :-) oh and for accuracy of the web browser, nokia and operamini are quite good at that too, I don't see what is so iPhone-specific.
- shawnz, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1the point isn't how you can mod it, he means that it doesn't support any of that by default. in fact, with the third-party iphone toolchain, adobe could probably compile flash for the iphone anyway.
- pishi, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1If it wasn't impossible to install, I'd consider it.
- ilgaz, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Either you have never seen an actual cell phone for 10 years or you are joking. Voice recorder? Nokia cheaper devices record 25 fps, true PAL resolution video.
- plagiats, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1or... simply port fring. http://www.fring.com/
- mikevictorbravo, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1There's no such thing as STANDARD out of the box functionality. If anything, the only standard is the ability to make and receive phone calls. That's why the cell market is so full of varying services, features, prices, phones. People bow down because they are excited that a product they like has just been added a new feature that for any number of reasons they didn't have before. So the real question is, why do people like you flip out when other people are happy and excited?
- neuropsychguy, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1You just have to warn them that they are being recorded before you start recording or else they;d be inadmissible.
It would be handy for use against the company itself though: "But Mr. X said this, here listen...." - ilgaz, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2Or you can go get J2ME SDK, Symbian SDK or WinCE SDK and freely code anything.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0the 8525/TyTN has A2DP support OUT OF THE BOX, hence no 3.5mm, its the year 2007, most things are wireless, with A2DP and the R35 itech clip i can use whatever earbuds/headphones i want
- GuptaChadwick, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0Vulgarity is more obvious in satin than in homespun.
- mrsteveman1, on 10/10/2007, -3/+3That crappy 10 year old phone (and most smartphones in fact) lacks major required functionality the iPhone has, like the usable interface that wasn't designed by a 12 year old and his engineer daddy working for Samsung.
I don't even have one, i have never touched one, but i can very easily see the difference regardless of missing applications, which have now been slowly added by hackers. - ComposCary, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0Solitude is as needed to the imagination as society is wholesome to the character.

- virtualball, on 10/10/2007, -3/+2wildsnake, get over it, the fact that it has no flash would be LARGELY overlooked if the iPhone could play Doom for free, run Skype, be unlocked and more. Those are such petty arguments, every phone has it's problems, get over it.
- wildsnake, on 10/10/2007, -6/+5The iPhone still sucks. No flash, no cut and paste, no zoom, balh blah blah. Apple & AT&T is laughing all the way to the bank. A palm does more. People are suckers
