- Angostura, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Someone doesn't know the difference between 'simple' and 'simplistic'. You really don't want a simplistic interface - trust me.
- edwilde, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8let the bits run free...
http://ime.mine.nu/MainMenu.torrent - DMTmedia, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Those of us who took the time to donate to Mr. Billy Ray Valentine @ Santa Software will receive a discount on the next version. I absolutely love this program! It does wonders keeping my Mac running smoothly. I really appreciate the fact that the program disables itself when your system software gets updated so that you can't do any unforeseen damage to your system. We designers only update our software when we have to. Only a true developer would think that far ahead.
Word to the wise: If you don't have this program, or you have a different utility Cough (Maintenance), do yourself a favor, ditch it and download main menu. Its this & Disk Warrior Baby! - mirgil, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7I have been eagerly awaiting the arrival of a 10.4.8 compatible version of MainMenu, and here it is! The GUI is much better in this version, it's clear and comprehensive and looks very Apple. I have to add that the developer is very responsive to questions and suggestions. I missed not having MM for a month, and welcome it back!
- beg513, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5not blog spam, glenn didn't post this here
- MonkeyFarts, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I just downloaded this app and am honestly quite impressed. This thing is amazing! It has a great UI, performs tons of tasks, and is extremely simple to use and easy on the eyes. I think I found myself a new default maintenance application.
- branthamal, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4MainMenu just keeps on improving in leaps. 1.7 is the coolest yet! I know I could do most functions other ways but I don't want to. OS X without MainMenu just doesn't feel...... right! If (for some odd reason ;-) I had to have only one system enhancement, this would be my choice.
- blackjackjoe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Honestly, I can't find a comparable application to MainMenu. It's one of the best application I have ever used. If you're like me who can't remember commands and don't like having 5 or 6 applications that basically do the same thing, you have got to try MainMenu. Thanks to the developer for all the work he put into this little gem!
- 1911wolf, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Found this app the other day when it showed up on my Macupdate.com feed and decided to give it a whirl. I like it a lot! The UI is sharp and very well laid out.
The official web site is slick as well. Although I'd like to see it expanded to include some documentation about it for those out there that aren't that keen on OS X system maintenance. - ttkgeek, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5Best. application. ever.
- ronaldpoi, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Thank god (and the developer) for the "Remove .DS_Store files" feature!!!
- Helpwithmacs, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I provide a Mac Support Service and have Mainmenu installed on almost every Mac I see. A lot of my clients are elderly and/or computer illiterate so the abilty to perform the general housekeeping provided by Mainmenu is fantastic. I think the Developer puts a lot of work into improving this Utility and he does it without any apparent financial support. In fact, I felt guilty because I was installing it on almost every Mac I see so I offered the Developer a cash donation. He graciously declined.
To the knockers! If you don't like the Application then can I suggest you vote with your feet and go elsewhere or get off your butt and attempt to do better.
Power to Rakka the Developer!! - BeastFromEast, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Wikipedia:
.DS_Store (Desktop Services Store[1]) is a hidden file created by Apple Computer's Mac OS X operating system to store custom attributes of a folder such as the position of icons or the choice of a background image[2]. By default, Mac OS X will create a .DS_Store file in every folder that it accesses, even folders on remote systems (for example, folders shared over a SMB or AFP connection) and even if the user has not customized the appearance of the folder[3]. After complaints from users about these files being created on remote systems, Apple posted an article on their support site telling users how they can disable the creation of remote .DS_Store files[4].
Although these files were initially primarily used by the Finder they were envisioned as a more general purpose store of metadata about the display options of folders such as icon position and view settings[1].
From adobe: (http://www.adobe.com/cfusion/knowledgebase/index.cfm?id=tn_16831)
To delete the .DS_Store files from the entire system a UNIX shell command can be used.
Launch Terminal from Applications:Utilities
At the UNIX shell prompt enter the following UNIX command:
sudo find / -name ".DS_Store" -depth -exec rm {} ;
When prompted for a password enter the Mac OS X Administrator password.

The developer should include some documentation and warnings :( - rampancy, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4From a section of the preferences window, it looks like the next major version after 1.7 is going to be shareware, not freeware (which isn't actually a bad thing, IMO).
- michaelyurechko, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Great app, keeps everything in line for me. What can I say? I'm lazy :-D
- Powerdrift, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I just went down the whole list of things MM does. Makes me feel good :P
- blackjackjoe, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I agree with the previous comment about documentation. Most non-technical users don't know that prebinding needs to be done only once or twice a month or maybe after an upgrade. It's easy enough to find an explanation at apple.com, but who wants to look through thousands of technical documents? An explanation of exactly what each process does and when should it be done would be nice.
- rakka, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3The developer is not trying to hide this fact. There is even a registration section in the prefs window for future usage. :)
- kaytwokay, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Awesome app, very useful!
- l0ne, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2OMG. I'm always amazed when somebody manages to capture that OS X "wow! bang!" Jobsy feeling of things that Are Cool And Just Do What They Do.
- rakka, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Not a problem,
Just contact the dev when the shareware version is released (which will be a very long time) and you'll receive a license at no cost :) - willwlp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0new poster here so be gentle!
been reading and enjoying this site from the shadows for some time. This MainMenu sounded real good so like many things found here I DLed and tried it. First try was the remove DS_store files. I'm no tech guru just a Mac user for over 20 years. I had little or no clue what these files were or the significance of using this program to remove. I got horrible maddening results and just wanted to warn any other what I learned the hard way. Yes, it worked fine, must have run for 7-10 minutes removing them. BUT in so doing every one of my thousands of folders had its date changed to today. Awful. Am totally beating head against wall as one of the main ways I BU and find things in hundreds of storage and customers folders is Sorting by Date.
This result is going to cost me hours and hours of lost time searching for items unless someone can tell me how to solve the problem.. Maybe I did something wrong, i don't know. I'm thinking of moving everything in from the last major data BU and just living with whatever these DS_store things are.
Thanks, just wanted to warn other unsuspecting souls. - bjbum, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Very hand, very awesome :D
- Enlightened411, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0MainMenu SAVED my MAC and my Sanity!
(+) PROS:
About 6 months ago my G4 MAC (OS X, Tiger) was a mess. I had so many problems with its strange (and evil) behavior that I was ready to call an exorcist. And my system performance had really slowed down. It was then that I discovered MainMenu while researching Maintenance Utilities and decided to give it a try.
I was amazed at how easy it was to use AND at how quickly it eradicated ALL those system and application irregularities I was experiencing! Since then my OS and applications have been running SO fine. :)
This latest release shows a substantial UI improvement with nice graphics. Moreover, the new features and improved organization make it EVEN EASIER to use.
(-) CONS:
- There is No Help documentation, HOWEVER the vendor has assured me that they are working on it ... I've presented some good reference material below -- keep reading.
(+) Tips-Tips-Tips!
When I first started to reclaim (fix) my system, I didn't know the first thing about doing system maintenance on MAC OS X - Tiger. The sources that I found I am certain you will find most INVALUABLE.

Not as nice as MainMenu but it gets the job done - BeastFromEast, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2The blog link doesn't work now, but http://www.santasw.com does...
- iAlex, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1You gotta enter the code shown, then you can download it.
- buteo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Maybe I am an idiot, but I can find no way to download the file from that mirror link.
- rakaur, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3Uh, Onyx? It does way more than this app.

- Brentendo, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0I couldn't get it either, santasw appears down and i can only find version 1.55
anyone got a mirror? - BeastFromEast, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0The blog link doesn't work now, but http://www.santasw.com does...
- UltimaNut, on 10/12/2007, -4/+0Id like to download the app but the links to Santa Software are all 404ed
- blackjackjoe, on 10/12/2007, -5/+0LOL! I don't think anyone was prepared for the necessary bandwidth, so here's a mirror. Ladies, don't complain, the app and the file hoster is free! If you don't want ads, use firefox and adblock.
http://download.yousendit.com/7579221C64E2F8A7 - edwilde, on 10/12/2007, -9/+2That mirror has to be the worst mirror site ever! Full of adverts to the point of making it impossible to actually click the download button.
anyone have a decent mirror? or a torrent perhaps? - nixfu, on 10/12/2007, -10/+3
