- ROFLance, on 10/12/2007, -10/+78Wow, a $300 NES.
- Konstantino, on 10/12/2007, -11/+24Now THAT'S a hack I'd like to pull. The only thing better than reading RSS and running OS X is playing Super Mario Bros.
- ElbridgeGerry, on 10/12/2007, -7/+17@LMNtal http://digg.com/apple/Super_Mario_Brothers_Running_On_Apple_TV_Video#c6051609
What the ***** were you trying to accomplish with that comment? - moocow1452, on 10/12/2007, -6/+15It plays 8 bit games in hi-def, with only the need of endless adapters, and 133+ haxing skillz.
For some reason, I'm unimpressed. - flag564, on 10/12/2007, -5/+14"Super Mario Bros. running on Apple TV."
I have that too.
It's called an NES. Bought it for 5 bucks, and it doesn't heat up to 100 degrees when I use it. - nusuni, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9I won't be impressed until I see Super Mario 64 on there...
- nfxmedia, on 10/12/2007, -8/+16Throw in MacMAME + X-Arcade Joystick and you have an arcade machine. Nice.
- nickerbocker, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8Oops double posted.
- RoflMyWaffle, on 10/12/2007, -5/+10um... well this isn't really that big of a deal.. a while back someone just loaded osx on his apple tv... add an emulator and you have super mario bros. Now if he made his own front end to look like the apple tv and incorporate emulators and roms, that would be a story. buried as lame
also, people have been doing this with myth tv forever, so its not even a new and creative idea. - zetsurin, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6It was sarcasm bozo.
- rebotfc, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Well its all part of the progress, the apple tv has only been out a few days and we have already come quite far. The real use for loading the emulator is when you can incorporate it into the apple TV "Backrow" app via a frappliance plugin. This would enable a list of roms Mame/Nes or otherwise to be played. Sure all this has been done with mythTV before but I think the nice thing is the hardware side which has a small box + hdmi + component + wireless. Something that is tough to match with off the shelf components in a mythtv box.
My current setup is simply a appleTV hooked up to a network NFS drive serving divx/xvid videos etc. Nothing special but the seamless integration into the appleTV is really nice. - WolfDV, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5I still gotta give the modded xbox the nod . . seeing just super mario on an apple tv isn't that impressive, why bother when you can mod a readily available and cheap xbox into a machine that'll emulate nearly all systems older than 1996 . .nes /snes / atari / gamegear / n64 mostly / genesis / others etc . .. basic whatever retro games you used to play (literally thousands and thousands) .
applt tv . . a retro gaming machine . . . i just don't see it . . sorry - kenvsryu, on 10/12/2007, -17/+20This appletv is almost as good as an old xbox.
- MrSunshine, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Who cares about playing Super Mario Bros. Great Giana Sisters is where it's at.
- rebotfc, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Surely a fanboy is one whom defends a product despite its obvious flaws, whats being done with the appleTV is the same hack mentality that bought you modded xbox's , mame-psp , hacked tivos, linksys router bittorrent client hacks, windows on mac , osx86 and a thousand other products. The very opposite of fanboyism.
Ofcourse you would rather be a hater , well thats fine i'm sure it will get you far in life. - kyrandian, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2shut up fanboy
- felidaeus, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5I'm waiting for the inivitable cease and desist from nintendo to apple.
What will happen when the two most rabid fan bases in technology clash?
Miyamoto vs. Jobs, eh? I would pay to see that. - scabbers, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2If you just want NES emulation, a Dreamcast is ideal - Nester DC SE is probably the best NES emulator on any platform.
- macfanboi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2REVOLUTIONARY!!!!
- kyrandian, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1wow! Super Mario Brothers. I remember that from when I was a kid...
.....and from every year since then since i knew about emulation. - duggworthy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2D-pad on an Xbox controller rocks. I play Super Mario World alot better then I would with a SNES controller. I've acually compared them side by side. Comfort and and controllability lies with the Xbox controller. I hope your not talking about the large (AKA The Duke) Controller. I'm talking about the S-type.
- XSforMe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@msprout
Make no mistake about it, as a writer you would starve. - Mothrog, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2"Surely a fanboy is one whom defends a product despite its obvious flaws..."
A $300 price tag with few features is what I would call a product with obvious flaws. - bradwilki, on 10/12/2007, -5/+6No big breakthrough but still pretty cool. Its more of a reason to me to hack an Apple TV than to put on OS X. It also gives more things for the Apple to do with it. Apple TV games on iTunes? If this becomes a big thing, I reckon so..
- s1ade, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2@deadbaby: what makes you think he's threatened? He's just stating facts, you're the one sounding threatened.
- zetsurin, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3If Nintendo could just brand this with their name on it (new yet underspecced box running Super Mario Bros almost EXACTLY as in the past) they could sell millions of it. Then they could bring out a slightly more compact version, or a limited editon Pokemon Nintendo-TV (only difference being yellow, but heck it'd sell)... nah, scrap that they are alredy doing it.
- diggimator, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yeah, considering that the output is a TV screen, games are probably a better choice for Apple TV than say running OO.org on Linux.
In that sense Apple TV is kind of like Zune. At this stage not a "killer app" but has much potential with future revisions. - astrosmash, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4> Compared to a Nintendo 64 controller?
Absolutely. The XBox D-Pad is so bad that classic games are virtually unplayable. That's been the largest criticism of the 360's new classic games download service. And most PC USB joysticks are no better. - rickd1313, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0this sorta seems up there with hack the toaster to me, sure you can, but why?
- flag564, on 10/12/2007, -5/+5Version 2.0 will cast a shadow.
- russtron, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3apparently, a hack is not a hack unless you can put mario bros. on it
- omarciddo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Apple.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@ElbridgeGerry: I believe LMNtal was trying to point out that, while one would say "brothers", the game title is properly written, "Super Mario Bros."
- Feeedbaack, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0N64 emulators have been around for years. Not sure if there are any for OSX though. Look for Project64 for PC.
- Feeedbaack, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1I have a nintendo emulator on my Palm Pilot. Welcome to 10 years ago. The first proper nintendo emulator ran in DOS and there have been many since. How do people not see that the AppleTV is just a slow, out of date computer in a pretty box? Pentium Mobile 1ghz, 256mb ram, 40gb HDD. no thanks...
- DanielNielsen, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Oh Mario on emulator blah blah blah, oh ***** you asses. your just crying cause you didnt figure out how to do it.
Long live hacks no matter wtf they are. - astrosmash, on 10/12/2007, -5/+3The XBox controller sucks.
- Demagogue, on 10/12/2007, -8/+6Yeah, almost but not quite
- duggworthy, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1"The XBox controller sucks."
Compared to a Nintendo 64 controller? - Mothrog, on 10/12/2007, -9/+7Looks like the apple fanboys are still trying to make a dog of a product look like its worth $300.
- bradwilki, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1@"ahmerhussain"
Yeah but so could the Click Wheel on the iPod. Just get the right kind of games on it and it would be fine. - Feeedbaack, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0For all you dough heads talking about how its so awesome because it has HDMI support, custom setup , chips etc. IT'S NOT CUSTOM. It's a small form factor motherboard with regular hardware on it! The HDMI is through an nvidia 7300 video card (the cheapest one with HDMI you can buy). You can get one for $90 retail.
Having said that, the thing is selling like crazy because apple are experts at taking existing products and making underfeatured, underpowered copies, wrapping it in a cool package and selling it to trendoids who have no idea what they're buying. - msprout, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1Mine was irony, dork.
- msprout, on 10/12/2007, -6/+3Nintendo's not making a Nintendo TV. I don't know what you're talking about.
- nickerbocker, on 10/12/2007, -7/+4Even a Wii + Virtual Console purchase of Super Mario Bros is cheaper than Apple TV.
- ahmerhussain, on 10/12/2007, -5/+2playing with an apple remote would be a pain in the ass...
- h3ndrix, on 10/12/2007, -16/+13Wow you Apple Fanboys are really stretching it now a'days... what's next
AppleTV takes up space and has mass... - zephc, on 10/12/2007, -9/+5*witty reply pointing out the pliability of the AppleTV, and that no one is forcing you to buy one*
- Bigcat1021, on 10/12/2007, -8/+4Yeah, you're right.
It makes no sense for companies to focus on the mass market. It is much better for them to target 16 to 21-year-old males that hang out at hackaday.com. There's so much more money in that.
BTW, how is your MBA coming along? - PapaZit, on 10/12/2007, -19/+15MARIO ON AN EMULATOR??? SAY IT AINT ***** SO!
this is not news -
