Steve Jobs says fix for crashing iPhone apps coming in Sept.
arstechnica.com — AppleInsider is reporting that one of its readers has received one of Steve Jobs's legendary one-line e-mails in response to his complaints of third-party iPhone app crashes.

- joebloggs2k8, on 08/20/2008, -3/+35I have a strong feeling that I am not the only one who thinks it is about time that Apple acknowledged this problem. Lets hope their next round of "bug fixes" actually gets the job of fixing bugs done. Fingers crossed.
- edstate, on 08/20/2008, -7/+12You're right on. While they were OVERLY apologetic for the MobleMe outages, yet behaved abysmally on this issue, and others concerning the iPhone proper. And, of course, they still haven't fixed Leopard... and it's already at 10.5.4.
Hey, I love'm. But they really should start paying attention to the M$softs, Sonys, and Adobes of the world in terms of hubris.- gregharmon, on 08/20/2008, -7/+18"they still haven't fixed Leopard... and it's already at 10.5.4."
You make it sound as if Leopard just doesn't work. I've been running it for a year and have only came across very minor bugs. Maybe because I"m a recent convert from Windows, the little bugs don't bother me as much...I mean, *****, I'm used to it. - JasonCox, on 08/20/2008, -3/+10Buried your comment because you used the dollar sign. This isnt 1998, this is 2008.
- iofthestorm, on 08/20/2008, -5/+11Convert? It's an OS, not a ***** religion, although sometimes with Mac fanboys I wonder...

Seriously, if the legends of your life revolve around Steve Jobs you need to stop jacking off to Japanese Anime.

- phinn, on 08/21/2008, -1/+3It's funny how much better jailbroken iPhone apps work. Apple really does have their head up their ass. And ever since I *downgraded* to the 2.x firmwares my text messaging has been really slow a lot of the time.

- goofygarber, on 08/20/2008, -5/+5Thank god. Every app except Pandora and Facebook crashes on launch on my iPhone. I've done a restore and reinstalled the apps, no luck. The failing apps are eBay, Simplify, and that song-guesser program who's name escapes me.
- gregharmon, on 08/20/2008, -3/+10Everytime? I'm not experiencing those issues and it doesn't really make any sense as to why you would, but not everyone unless there was something specifically wrong with your iPhone? Maybe exchange it?
Don't get me wrong, my iPhone is having issues but nothing that severe. - Reaktor5, on 08/20/2008, -3/+1Try a hard restore.
- migitalwarfare, on 08/21/2008, -0/+1"that song-guesser program who's name escapes me."
you mean shazam? that thing is decent, but needs to encompass a lot more than just popular music. i wish tunatic would write an app for the appstore.
i've run into a problem with ALL of my appstore apps refusing to load, and found that if i download one more app, and enter my itunes account password, everything is back to normal. i read somewhere online that the itunes account file stored on your phone that gives you permission to run downloaded apps gets corrupted, and by re-entering your password, it overwrites it. - rockersDC, on 09/03/2008, -0/+1All my App Store apps crash on launch, too -- 1st gen iPhone, running 2.0.2.
Damn.

- Wargasmic, on 08/20/2008, -8/+17No such thing.
- jabberwolf, on 08/21/2008, -1/+8"What about non-pompous Apple users?"
There is actually no such thing, thats something an Appletard would say.
The reason there isn't, is that we dont give people like MS, Sony, HTC any excuses, if ***** doesnt work, we scream about it. But it seems that only Apple users seem to make oodles of unending excuses for Apple's mistakes and lack of function.
. - Tribis, on 08/21/2008, -2/+4Digg makes me ashamed to be a human being.
- migitalwarfare, on 08/21/2008, -1/+2apple fans get ***** on for loving apple products, pc fans do the *****. pc fans get ***** on for loving microsoft and linux. apple fans do the *****.
why does this ***** happen in EVERY apple and microsoft article posted on digg? you'd think, by now, that this pointless argument could be put to rest. nobody is getting anywhere with it. one side isn't winning or losing. it's a personal preference. i'm not going to suddenly switch back to pc because of anything that's said on here, and you're certainly not going to make me feel bad for using apple products. don't you people have anything better to do than fight the same argument over and over again?
personally, i enjoy not having to tweak settings in XP all the god damn time to keep it from freezing, or crashing, or performing like *****, and if that means i don't get as much flexibility in the OS, fine by me. i'd like to use my computer, not fix it.
- ufia, on 08/20/2008, -18/+4The correct term is PC users.
- LMN8R, on 08/20/2008, -5/+16It's quite sad that Apple can't design software that doesn't crash even on a platform so closed off, without using any third party applications.
- Tenoq, on 08/21/2008, -3/+4But we're talking about third party applications.... :/
- bradysdaman, on 08/21/2008, -2/+5What on earth are you talking about?
The whole app store is third party apps. Sure they run it by Apple first and when I use my apps they work just about all the time. But occasionally one crashes. Big deal. If someone is so impatient that they can't wait 2 minutes while the phone restarts should probably not be using the most cutting edge technology and probably should be using a razr, which isn't going to do anything close to what my iPhone can do. - jabberwolf, on 08/21/2008, -3/+9It crashes on it's OWN applications(no 3rd party needed) which is pretty pathetic.
"If someone is so impatient that they can't wait 2 minutes while the phone restarts should probably not be using the most cutting edge technology"
That's funny - that's what Appletards would be bashing on a windows mobile user for.
But the CUTTING EDGE of technology is actually windows Mobile that has all the functionity of the iphone and much much more!
I mean seriously, the reason iphone was so quick was that it was a closed OS, nothing ran with it, it only ran web apps. It couldnt cut and paste, it still cant do ALOT of functions with MS ACTIVE SYNC.
And one of the major reasons it ran so well, was they splurged on getting the best CPU possible for ir because they knew they could sacrafice power by not having 3G.
Now other phones are about par with the CPU and have all the function and 3G.
Apple still lacks the functions but finally caught up on the 3G.
So sorry, with all things weighed, iPhone loses! - LMN8R, on 08/21/2008, -2/+4We are not discussing 3rd party applications. We're talking about widespread iPhone instability while using Apple's own 1st party applications, and in some cases, no applications whatsoever.
- mrBitch, on 08/21/2008, -1/+1@jabber RE: ".. But the CUTTING EDGE of technology is actually windows Mobile that has all the functionity of the iphone and much much more! "

- gregharmon, on 08/20/2008, -2/+16I had the original iPhone and now i have the iPhone 3g. I love the iPhone, however, there are some problems with the 2.0 firmware. Even the latest 2.0.2. There are slowdowns, crashes and so on. I'm confident that things will at least return to the way they were before the 2.0 firmware so I"m just putting up with it right now and to be honest, even if they don't...it's still better than any other phone I've used, by a long shot. It's just very disappointing to have the beauty of the UI tarnished by slow performance with the contact lists, etc.
It's like having a Lamborghini with an obnoxious scratch on it. It's still better than a Ford, but it's enough to annoy the piss out of you.- Narcolepticon, on 08/20/2008, -3/+1
- gregharmon, on 08/21/2008, -1/+5I would too, but you're exaggerating. My iPhone is running fine, all the time. It just has a few hickups but nothing that stops me from making a phone call, etc.

- talonh, on 08/21/2008, -1/+5Uh.. hate to break it to you but the iPhone isn't a Lamborghini and you have no clue what it's like to own a Lamborghini with or without a scratch. But other than that I completely agree.

*UPDATE
Actually, maybe you're right. I just read this further down the page: "***** apple. ***** cocksucking gayass ***** douches." - krisrm, on 08/21/2008, -2/+1Only for Apple... ;-)
- zman2rw, on 08/20/2008, -6/+4I don't know what everyone's problem is I have yet had my iPhone crash from any app installed.Maybe if you did some research on the app before you download would help. Or maybe if you didn't download every app out there you wouldn't have this problem either.
- btschul, on 08/20/2008, -2/+3I have had problems with 2 apps. Remote crashes every now and again, and some ***** app that is just an animation of a lighter. That's it. Not a device crippling problem like other people here seem to be having.
- foresmac, on 08/20/2008, -1/+2The problems aren't widespread and appear to be linked to iTunes 7.7.1. But for those experiencing the problem, I can imagine it in quite annoying.
- screwzluse, on 08/20/2008, -1/+2I'm confused what sort of research you expect users to do? These apps don't have much control over the phone. If they crash, there's a good chance the issue lies with Apple at the moment. Hell, this article is all about how Steve is admitting that they made a mistake and it will be fixed.
And if I want to download every app, it's irrelevent. The app doesn't have control over the phone and can't run apps in the background. The crashing should have nothing to do with the amount of apps you downloaded unless, of course, something is wrong with the OS.- psychomuso, on 08/23/2008, -0/+0Given that I do research apps carefully before downloading/buying them and even Apple's own Remote crashes, it's not a user problem. Being smug and insulting people who do have this problem is just plain rude.

- slinky317, on 08/21/2008, -1/+7You do realize that the entire Apple advertising campaign relies on bashing Windows and saying how crappy it is, right? Sorry, but don't give me that "insecure" ***** - when you come at Windows and PCs like that, you better deliver or you're gonna hear it right back, and rightfully so.
If Apple focused on promoting APPLE and less on demoting Windows/PCs, I wouldn't care about these problems and I'd have more respect for them. But they didn't, and they deserve all the criticism they get. - javaroast, on 08/21/2008, -0/+2Why tell just half the story? Amusing how whenever there is a Digg story about Mac or iPhone bugs we get endless posts from the "It's not that big of a problem, it's not Apples fault, I'm not personally having the problem" crowd. If you are happy with Apple good for you, but please realize how insecure it makes you look when you have to defend them like you defend your sister's honor. Neither your sister or Apple is a flawless as you like to make it sound.

- phinn, on 08/21/2008, -0/+1Yea I'm going to do the same very soon. 1.1.4 was much faster overall, and apps run a lot better, no crashes, and they actually upgrade themselves easily... The worst part about the 2.0.x firmwares for me is that my text messaging input is really laggy, it's terrible. 1.1.4 is -by far- the best firmware.
- slinky317, on 08/20/2008, -6/+7I thought Macs didn't crash?
- digiguy, on 08/20/2008, -2/+3The title isn't a Mac. It's an iPhone
- slinky317, on 08/21/2008, -2/+2Ahhhh. Completely different!
So if Dell released a laptop which they based their entire obnoxious and annoying marketing scheme as "It doesn't crash" and then came out with a peripheral unrelated that crashed randomly, you would look the other way and say the same thing?
- slinky317, on 08/21/2008, -2/+2Ahhhh. Completely different!
- Macintoshreader, on 08/21/2008, -1/+0A Mac is not an iPhone. Btw, OS X doesn't crash nearly as often as Windows.
- reformation, on 08/21/2008, -0/+1No but you wouldn't compare a Sony phone to a Sony Laptop.

- GaryChalmers, on 08/20/2008, -3/+6Apple product not work? That's Unpossible!!
- ramsinks.com, on 08/21/2008, -3/+2yep, works fine here.

- davidwasman, on 08/20/2008, -0/+2In all fairness, his letter to Steve Jobs was probably angry and poorly worded.
I recently sent an email to Steve Jobs relating to my Mobile Me issues and he forwarded it to the top man in Customer Relations. My original email contained no insults, vulgarity, or angry words. I didn't kiss his ass, either, but I was polite and explained the issue thoroughly.
Sorry, but to get something done you don't always have to be a prick.- slinky317, on 08/21/2008, -2/+2When you buy something that doesn't work, you have every damn right to be a little rude to those responsible. I can understand the "it's not their fault" argument on lowly customer service reps, but a CEO is responsible for whatever the whole company puts out.
- davidwasman, on 08/21/2008, -0/+3If I buy a bad sandwich from McDonald's and I go to the manager with a rude and vulgar complaint...I will get my replacement sandwich spit on (if not worse).
If I kindly explain the issue and ask for a replacement, I will get a fresh one.
Nothing is gained by being an ***** in any business. - slinky317, on 08/21/2008, -2/+1I never said that being rude was always the best option. Certainly it's not, as your case showed. However, that doesn't mean that you're not entitled to act a little pissy when something you purchased doesn't work correctly.
- talonh, on 08/21/2008, -0/+3Dammit, Steve Jobs just spit on my iPhone.

- bigteebo, on 08/21/2008, -1/+3Is he going to have a huge press release & presentation about it?
- p51d007, on 08/21/2008, -2/+1Hey Apple...welcome to the party! Those of us who have the at&t tilt (HTC 8925/Kaiser/Tyan II) have been
waiting since spring for the 6.1 version of Windows Mobile, so don't cry too much. - sleepbox, on 08/21/2008, -0/+2My iPod touch has not crashed since 2.0.2 was released...oh, nm, that was yesterday.
- triont, on 08/21/2008, -0/+1I updated to 2.0.2 and still have the prob where it unlocks and it decides to go to the home screen.
- Merp08, on 08/21/2008, -0/+1I've been wanting to get one of these. Looks like I will be holding off for a while. :o(
- windohs, on 08/21/2008, -1/+1has steve jobs ever announced a product coming out THAT SAME DAY or just "in the near future..." ?
- sleepbox, on 08/21/2008, -0/+1My 16GB ipod touch has inexplicably deleted all of my music and video...twice
Listening to beach boys 1 second, the next it goes quiet, then the next YOU HAVE NO MUSIC, YOU CAN BUY MUSIC FROM ITUNES.
Thankfully, I was at home at the time and just re-synced. The app problem is inexcusable. Trying to play Galcon, getting a load screen then a trip back to the springboard over and over again is a huge pain in my ass. I think my Touch is glitchy actually. - viserov, on 08/21/2008, -1/+2My contacts list is still laggy.
- Cherubim, on 08/21/2008, -0/+0Typical arrogant Jobs. He will never admit that a lot of Apple's products are cheap & *****-up to begin with. It's a pity the sheeple that follow his every word can't think for themselves and see this scenario.
- extant59, on 08/21/2008, -1/+1what about the text messages that stop making noise?
- hassenpfeffer, on 08/21/2008, -0/+0For the price, you would think it wouldn't need a fix that is coming soon - isn't this the second release?
- reformation, on 08/21/2008, -0/+1In the first couple of weeks when I was constantly trying out new apps I had loads of crashes - every other day it would lock up and need a full reset. Now that i'm no longer pissing about with ***** applications all the time (deleted most of them immediately) its much better.
- fjinnw, on 08/21/2008, -1/+0I bought an iMac today, I am selling it tomorrow. half price, its that bad. fvck apple!!
- jacobgduncan, on 08/21/2008, -0/+1Wow. What is so bad to make you sell for half price?

- psychomuso, on 08/21/2008, -0/+0What exactly are we supposed to do in the meantime? This could mean that some people are not able to make full use of their iPhones for anything up to 6 weeks. I hear a lawsuit coming.
- cifrancgx, on 08/21/2008, -0/+1Basically the issue seems to be with iTunes 7.7.1. Going back to 7.7.0 and resyncing your apps seems to do the trick.
This has worked for me for about 6 days now...
