- CannedCorn, on 10/12/2007, -2/+28Ahis is my favorite speach of all time. As a college computer science student and lover of apple / steve, it truly represents my passions and brings out what makes his compay great, actually caring about their products instead of making just another box.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -6/+31what a great speach!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+22It's really quite refreshing for someone with so much money/power to be so forthright about their personal life.
- meatmcguffin, on 10/12/2007, -2/+22Without Jobs, Woz and Apple, do you really think that the computer that you're typing on would exist in the same form today?
- deadbaby, on 10/12/2007, -2/+17You clicked on the link and presumably read the article so yes.. tell us... Why do you religiously follow Steve Jobs? Most sensible people just ignore stories they don't care about yet you're reading the Apple section of digg and posting comments about the story so clearly you care very much about Steve Jobs. Doesn't that seem odd to you?
- MacParrot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13TheReport,
It's called jealousy. Since both Jobs and Woz are more successful than most of these losers ever will be. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14heard it before but none the less great speech. :)
- philpham, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11No matter how many times I read this speech.. I get choked up. Dugg..
- paulface12, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11So you're trying to tell us that because you got a Mac lemon, you now have some sort of vast insight into Steve Jobs as a person?
I think it is safe to say, despite your small insignificant experience, he's made some pretty big contributions to his field, and he's done pretty well for himself too. - jamiequint, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11I'm sick of bad spelling on digg. (It's "conceited" not conceded)
I'm sick of you (If being the CEO of a 66+ billion dollar company is washed up, then what are you?) - Ninjab3ar, on 10/12/2007, -5/+14STFU
- ThePDW, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9If it's sarcasm, it sure is a poor use of sarcasm!
- deGrumpySmurf, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Truly a fantastic speech from a guy who 'gets it'. Words I try live by these days, do what makes YOU happy. Follow your heart and the rest will follow, seams idealistic and somewhat romantic but successful start-ups have their foundations rooted in such quotes. A couple of guys getting together with a 'great idea that will make millions' means nothing unless they are all driven by what makes them happy. I guess many people will swear that its money that makes them happy... sure for sometime, but when you've done it all and have run out of 'toys' to buy...?
"Do what you love, Love what you do and the rest will follow" - firsttube, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9at least sounds like you could get your broken cd drive fixed, you have 6 months to do it too. i have a macbook myself, and was quite disappointed with the speaker quality. I then realized that with a laptop that's around 1" thin, those kinds of things happen.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -10/+17@vistic: WHAT are you on about man? I mean what ARE you on about? That is such a pile of false crap it's unbelievable. Do you know ANYTHING of the history of the PC, Gates, Jobs, Apple, Microsoft, Windows etc.? Very obviously not.
Gates could never have written or said any of these things. Microsoft as created and led by Gates are parasites - leeching off other creativity in the industry. They have never come up with something original in their lives.
And Gates would be incapable of even thinking in the way required to tell such stories - he does not see life in that way.
You sir, are a FOOL. And no mistake. - TheReport, on 10/12/2007, -3/+103 stories that made a differene in Woz's Life
1) I met Jobs
2) I met Jobs
3) I met Jobs
See unlike you Jobs actually knows his place and actually gives credit to the people that has changed his life and Woz does the same thing. They know that they needed each other to taken apple to where its at now and have even spoken out passionatly on each others behalf. Bashing Jobs just proves to me more that there will always be idiots out there that will blindly bash a company for whatever reason you hold such a bitter grudge. - bradbaxter, on 10/12/2007, -6/+12ajck,
I really think it was sarcasm.
Get a grip. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Hey, that rhymes with peech.
- csharporjava, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I went to Cal too in the early 70's. I had transferred from UCLA where I was a computer science major. But on arriving there, my PL-1 would have to be replaced with Fortran and instead of working with an IBM 360-91s, I'd have to use their Univac machine. So I changed majors to the Social Sciences (apropos for the time) and ended up a lawyer.
I know something about doing what you hate. But 6 years ago, I decided to stop and change. I decided to become a web app developer and I absolutely love it. I'm building legal web apps that are just about to launch. While I have yet to make my first buck, I know that somehow things will work out because I believe in what I do. Nobody else is doing it - I found my own niche. But I believe that my tech will be adopted by many lawyers in California and eventually in other jurisdictions as I spread out, if only because it works.
So do what you love, love what you do - I found a way in my profession to merge it with my first desire in life - to be an inventor. I am creating the building blocks for legal automation - instead of paying lawyers $400/hour to do the thinking, paying the servers pennies per hour instead. I have a very clear vision, but it requires tons of work. The first steps are more evolutionary than revolutionary, but where I'm headed is uncharted territory. Every day I wake up filled with that passion and I work long hours late into the night - because I have a vision and because I love it. I've created my own dream job.
But I've also have taken time in my life to pursue other dreams like climbing El Cap and soloing lesser walls in Yosemite. What I've learned there was getting to the top just means going back down to do it again, something Steve has done a few times now. It's not about arriving on top, it's about doing the climb. - wabbitman1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Amazing speech! How can you not want to change the world for the better after hearing that?!!!!!!!!
- klepto, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Good advice.
I just wish I could talk to him 1 on 1 about the aspect of capitalism in apple and how it affects the founders personally.
I don't believe Woz and Jobs are greedy, but they're more about showing up people than getting zeros in their account.
But I would like to ask him of his relationship with the decisions of shareholders in his company. - MacParrot, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Hey that's great bufbaby. Way to stay on topic too!
- snowmanonfire, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7I'm doing this for my speech and debate OI speech,
everyone makes fun of me when I do the cancer in my pancreas part. - smaisch, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Wonderful speech.
Did anyone else slight chuckle when the noticed Steve Jobs' speech was hosted on a Microsoft Live account? :P - jamiequint, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4YouTube video if you prefer...
http://youtube.com/watch?v=D1R-jKKp3NA - drafhk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I have to say, when I first saw this, I thought it was gonna be another Fanboy's Delight and nothing more. Not so. This speech was really really good and far more than worthwhile to read.
- soopafly, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4And you're still here because?
- DavidDigg, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7Let me give you guys another perspective.
I went to Berkeley, the last of the hangouts of the old hippies, and I've heard this spiel about a thousand times from various people. The "be free," "do what you love" sensibility is refreshing if you've never heard it before, but the day of reckoning usually comes for everyone sooner or later.
What you don't hear so often is, "if you can, love what you do." Not all professions have the luxury of adapting themselves to your style of creativity, but some do.
The fact is that most people don't have the kind of inner drive that made Jobs a gazillionaire, and listening to him (although inspiring) won't help that much. I firmly believe that reasonable harmony is the result of an individual and a job adapting to each other. - MacParrot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4It actually sounds more like, "I hate Apple, so I'll make something up to tick off Mac users and make Macs look bad". Or something. Can't think of any Mac laptops with cd drives made in the last couple of years. They do have optical drives however that Apple will cheerfully repair for at least a year after purchase. So go get it fixed...or not since you don't actually have a Mac in the first place.
- bill679, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Stan? I believe I read somewhere...can't remember where...that Jobs delivered this speech on June 12, 2005, which is only a "...***** YEAR AND A HALF AGO".
- MacParrot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Maybe he's talking about conceded diggers. Those diggers who just gave up because they can't win. Or maybe he's an idiot. I'll get back to you.
- Clearz, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Damn should have checked the comments before I read all that. Reading is so last millennium ^^. Very inspirational speech but.
- ThinkBox, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3@ ajck
and you, sir, don't understand sarcasm - kafka47, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Well said, but I offer that being creative isn't a requirement for loving what you do. Some people love their careers even if they're just crunching numbers or building houses.
The whole trick is to find what you love, have the courage to face it, and then go do it. Doesn't matter if it's counting marbles or sculpting a masterpiece. I think in Jobs' case, he's sharing what his experience was and it just happened to be a creative enterprise.
As a 35-year-old former security engineer, I can attest to what Jobs says - ignore the dissenters and follow your own voice - I jumped careers at the behest of everyone around me and have never looked back! - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5@PeopleGeek: WHAT are you on about man? You sir, are a FOOL. And no mistake. - richardandersen, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4I got lemons too, and I'll likely never again buy Apple. But I still think Jobs is great on too many levels to mention, and have undying respect for what he's done for personal computing and personal technolgy in general. In the unlikely event that I again some day consider Apple products, it will only be so long as he is at the healm.
- bjorkbjorkbjork, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6@ninjab3ar:
Jobs didn't get any honorary degree for that speech (I was there for the whole ceremony). I don't think Stanford does that sort of thing. I could be wrong though. I welcome counterexamples. - phlux, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@csharporjava
What is your email - I want to get in touch with you regarding your comment/web apps.

- laterthandawn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Oh, and one other thing: read "Commodify Your Dissent"...it's brilliant, and it might as well be talking about this guy.
- SVPirate, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Still great the second time around.
- tomeitel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1hahah yeah on a microsoft accoutn pretty funny... hahah ... but a good story stay foolish stay hungry... not a bad way to end it...
- nexxton, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1great story
- hadron, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It's old but if you really pay attention, you can see how what's at the heart of this, is the reason why Macs are amazing ... Jobs' gonna take us into the Quantum Era for sure; he has a unique way of getting his philosophy on life into the workings of a machine ... that's the beauty, that's the art ...
- ThinkBox, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3Sony actually wrote that speech, Bill just gave it.
- dizzybastard, on 10/12/2007, -6/+6great speech...
dupe though... - TheReport, on 10/12/2007, -4/+4"buried as lame because i read this MONTHS ago."
Buried my face in your moms legs cause she read up on my sign...Im a Scorpio by the way ;)......Giggity Giggity Giggity, awww riiiight - theocrithary, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3Any chance "Stay hungry" means be greedy and always want for more?
and
"Stay foolish" means take chances, trust your instincts and rely on those 'dots' to connect someday.
If only we also could be so blessed with these fates. -
