- nyub, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3You've got to be a real sad c*nt to pixelate a picture of a guy who's only interested in screwing you out of the most money he can. Get a life people - stop idolising tycoons.
- LankyGoRar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Not bad. I've seen similar, but I like the creativity element in this one.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1OMG it's MY leader and commander in chief. All hail the jobbs! Bow down to the man! hehehehehhehe.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Since it involves an ipod in some way, it is almost sure to make it to the front page!
- gamabunta, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Seriously, this is only on the front page b/c it's Apple related and the fanboys hope to meet Jobs someday.
Think of it this way, if that image was of Bill Gates would it be on the frontpage? - dasbell, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1" I sure do like them french fried potaters... mmm hmmm"
- Bobster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Get a life people - stop idolising tycoons."
What about iconizing them? - meekar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1guys, you have got to admit it's cool
- tsevis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Oh God!... So many comments! I am really impressed. I have to say something like that old title of TIME magazine in an article about the iMac design and its influence in the contemporary design "Steve, look what you ve done!"
First of all, I have to honestly thank Kevin for posting this and everyone who liked it or not, took the time to see it.
Second, please forgive my bad English. I am Greek and I have studied in Italy and Germany. So, English is my third or fourth language. I hope you understand.
Please, let me explain some things here, because I think that some people miss the point.
I am a big fan of Apple and I consider Steve Jobs my personal hero. You like the man or not, I think this is not the issue here.
Something about the "history" of this image:
This picture is made to illustrate an article in a Mac magazine in Greece. The article is written by me and it talks about Steve's latest unauthorized biography "iCon", which is recently published in my country. I had the luck to design the cover, and as a big Steve's fan, I had the honor to present it in some occasions. That's why I choose the icons concept.
About my mosaics passion:
I have this mosaic passion for quite a decade. I studied and studied and I have used so many techniques and software packages. MacZaic, MojoDojo, MacOSXaic, EmailEffects, Photoshop (YES, you could do mosaics with Photoshop), 2gether1Pro, StudioArtist and many others.
But far beyond the tools, I have also studied the masters, the classics in this area. Dali (YES, he also made mosaics), Escher, John Maeda, Skott Kim, all Maeda students like Peter Cho, Ben Fry, Casey Reas, but also the arabic patterns, the victorian patterns, roman mosaics and as a greek, the geometric period of ancient greek art. There are so many people who have the same passion with me, and I am very glad that I have the honor to meet some of them.
Mosaics do some impression, and people often stay on the surface. They ask you how you did it. They don't want to go deeper and see if you have something to say, or if a mosaic is just another way of expression.
But for me, mosaics have an interesting idea. The ambiguity. There are two views of every mosaic: There is the whole and there are the stones, that made it. If you find a good relationship between these two aspects, you create an interesting mosaic. If you don't you created another geek image that has nothing to say.
In the last almost 10 years I made many mosaics. Some are nice, some are not. Some others are made just to learn something. I got some awards for my mosaics and of course I have used it for my professional works. In the near future I am going to post more mosaics in my Flickr page, from all these years of study. If you want to see some of my early mosaic works look here:

Some of my latest are on my Flickr page: http://www.flickr.com/photos/tsevis/
This mosaic of Steve is done mainly with Synthetik StudioArtist (http://www.synthetik.com). This software goes far beyond any other photomosaic package even if it not a dedicated mosaic tool. StudioArtist is a graphic synthesizer. That means that it gives you the ability to apply all the values and parametres of sound to the image. You can develop your own brushes and you could paint with them your pictures. But StudioArtist has no limits when it come to the shape of your brush. The user could use simple shapes as well as text or movies. So, I created a movie with a series of icons, and I painted this image with it. I had to spend more time to prepare the movie than to paint the portrait. This is panted with 4 different layers. Every layer had a different size of icons. Then I assembled the image to create the feel of depth.
But far beyond the software, the technique etc, this image - for me - is a piece of art. That means it's an expression. I cannot understand why so many people stay on the surface, and don't want to look a little bit deeper. And I don't understand all this cries about the person. I could appreciate a portrait of Bill Gates, even if I am not a fan of his.
But most of all, it doesn't matter how it is made. What matters is if this image can tell you something. If it does, I am very happy. If it doesn't I am happy as well. Art is a message. You can get it or not.
Many thanks once again to Keffrin, even if I am not sure I wanted so much publicity.
Greetings to all from Athens, Greece.

- theone3, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Whoa. Talk about mac worship. Proof that Apple is not a product, it's a cult.

- mke01, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2you can download software to create photo-mosaics, but this is such a poor example, i have to assume it was done by hand.

keffrin: douche.

- istatic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Umm, doesn't look finished.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Woah, the person who made it must've had a lot of time on their hands

WTF = use the best technology for the job, which most of the time is Apple built :)
This dude didn't spend 8,000 hours making this thing, and he didn't have a 4 million layer Photoshop Doc. Technology like this has been around for a while to generate ASCII type images, he just modified it for icons. I have seen complete videos done in this style. He even says in the comments on flickr that it only took about 2 hours to generate. I think it is pretty creative myself. And BTW Steve Jobs is an icon, and so is Bill Gates. Love it or hate it, nobody cares what you have to say. And nobody cares what I have to say, but I deal with it...in therapy = booo f-in hooooooo. - generalleoff, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0looks more like George Carlin to me
- davymac, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0oh god... seriously.. i like apple and all.. but this is just ridiculous fanboyismness
- thomashallock, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0it's fun looking at it at different resolutions. The smallest size almost looks like a real photograph.
- theone3, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@knon.
Can't argue with that logic. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1>"Get a life people - stop idolising tycoons."
"What about iconizing them?"
-bobster
GET IT????????? ICON?!! AHAHAHAHAHA
(good job) - RiddickRom, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I was drawn to this and I'm not sure why. I had a strong feeling it would be one of those autogenerated mosiacs. Certainly not worth a click anymore than hearing someone has done a new Terragen landscape. So why did I click? Maybe I'm a fanboy but I own no Apple products and have no intention of ever owning any.
I think there is something magical going on with the Apple brand. Even the people who hate Apple still had to read it and comment.
Anyway, as for the image, it's nicely done knowing it was done by hand but ultimately dissapointing at such a tiny size. - buckdog05, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0That is so cool!
- mike_p, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Ok... this is a cool pic but seriously...
This apple fanboy crap has a limit... he's just a ***** [smart] guy. - Wubbie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'm a Mac Fan, but not enough Icons were used and it makes the image look really really bad...
+digg for effort. - orb_nsc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I just threw up a little bit in my mouth.
- rompom7, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1"you can download software to create photo-mosaics, but this is such a poor example, i have to assume it was done by hand.

- 13mx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0There sure are alot of haters out there, and really need to get a life. Most of ya'll are just pissed because you can't get your own story on the frontpage. ya'll just complain about every story that does get there.
I don't like Macs, But this was indeed pretty cool. - vonskippy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Fanboys everywhere wet themselves over another useless iPod/Aooke/Steve Jobs story.
I thought Digg.com was a FREAKING TECH SITE, not crap stories for morons. - Bretso, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Very clever -digg
