- Ellsass, on 11/05/2008, -1/+92If you're going to put some new term in the headline, at least describe it it normal terms in the summary. Example:
Status of iPod Touch Jailbreak: "Jailbreak seems increasingly unlikely..."
A status report of the attempts to open the iPod Touch's file system to install 3rd party apps. So far, things are not looking so good.
See how easy that was? - TheKrillr, on 10/10/2007, -1/+53I just want to point out that it has been only a few days that devs have had access to the iPod Touch. Give them time. Sure, maybe the methods used on the iPhone wont work. That doesn't mean its impossible.
- grayapple, on 10/10/2007, -3/+41 Give it a fortnight, it'll be hacked quite soon.
- Wailord, on 11/01/2007, -2/+36That really sucks.
- PricklySponge, on 10/10/2007, -11/+40I dont understand. What is this all about?
- Shorties, on 10/10/2007, -2/+20It will be hacked, everything can be hacked.
- Dagreenman, on 10/10/2007, -0/+15How about a hack so i can get some ***** cut and paste on an iphone? how about that?
- violentvinyl, on 10/10/2007, -1/+15http://www.tuaw.com/2007/08/08/iphone-hacking-101-jailbreaking/
- NeoRicen, on 10/10/2007, -0/+14The article, if you read it...
- HappyScrappy, on 10/10/2007, -0/+12Hacking into other people's equipment = malicious intent
Hacking into your own equipment = community services - b3mus3d, on 10/10/2007, -0/+11It turned out to be basically *****.
- kris33, on 10/10/2007, -0/+9*****. Not positive news since I think iPhone firmware 1.1 will be very similar to the firmware of iPod Touch.
- thechosen, on 10/10/2007, -0/+9Dugg for using the word "Fortnight."
- meatmcguffin, on 10/10/2007, -5/+14Yeah, because the zune has a great SDK and is open to develo....oh wait.
- SoxFanNH, on 10/10/2007, -1/+9Its pathetic that it needs to be "hacked" in the first place...
- YouKnowHim, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6welcome to corporate America, and yes, as for selling more i believe so, just look at the sales of the original XBOX after the first year of home brew/hacks..
- piwy, on 10/10/2007, -2/+8You don't care. Some people do tho.
It's not about the mp3 playing features here. It's about the stuff we may be able to do with this mp3 player if we are able to put apps on it.
Your "get another mp3 player" statement won't fly here. - kotatsu, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6It's early days. Nothing holds out forever.
- jakem1, on 10/10/2007, -9/+15How do all you fanboys know this? It seems like every time someone finds something they don't like about an Apple product the RIAA is to blame rather than Apple. You're all like Russian peasants believing that Stalin would save you from the Gulags if only he new about the injustices that were being committed in his name.
- technoholic, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7It's still early. My hopes are still up for a hack.
- AnotherBrian, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6It will be hacked again.
- poontangpirate, on 10/10/2007, -2/+8Can somebody answer my question please? If they find a way to hack it, and we have all our nice apps running, wont they just stop working once Apple updates the hacked firmware?
- HesNikke, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Only Apple knows that. Personally, I hope Apple isn't that shortsighted, but I'm not holding my breath.
There have been 2 firmware updates for the iPhone, and afaik they haven't messed with third party apps - but i haven't been paying that close of attention... i only got my iPhone yesterday. - linuxinsidev2, on 10/10/2007, -2/+7What the crap are you on about?
You want apple to market a product that has a feature of being hackable?
Regardless, this is like when the PSP guys thought it was game over with that Firmware 2.0 update all those moons ago... It can be done, and will be done by someone who will persist and knows what they are doing. - dagamer34, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Because when it gets so easy that Joe Shmoe starts doing it then breaks his iPod, Apple Customer Support has to start dealing with 3rd party mess, regardless of all the warnings the open-source community has probably said. When a $400 MP3 player bricks on them, they will be steaming. Apple doesn't want to deal with unnecessary support calls that honestly would take too much time. You'd need to get an actual engineer to fix that.
- digginghacker, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Yes.
- myflyertrains, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Patience is required here. We will be loading new apps on our Touches soon enough...
- shoook, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3I understand Jailbreaking an iPhone, but the term "Jailbreak" when applied to iPod Touch doesn't make much sense to me. Are you saying you want to hack it?
- WiseWeasel, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Apparently, it uses a different protocol for communicating with your computer, and the specific hacks that allowed open access to the iPhone don't seem to work on the iPod Touch. I'm sure this will be sorted out within the week.
- nickiank, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3Where did I say I wanted Apple to market a product that has a feature of being hackable? Check your comprehension skills and try again.
Here's what I'm "on about": the stupidity of people bitching about a product being locked down because they lust after some aspect of its functionality and how it doesn't work with their preferred platform etc., and then they're running out and buying it the second somebody circumvents the method through which its functionality is somehow limited or hindered. If one *wants* products that are highly modifiable, it's pretty ***** idiotic to go drop a couple hundo on something that isn't, because at that point, you're basically telling the manufacturer that you're fine with them making what you're after impossible or at least willfully obscure. - Allistar, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2I can't wait for a workaround to come about.
Being able to use Mail.app, the Google Maps app (maybe caching the directions/map for when you are on the go?), etc. will be GREAT. - TheCheeks, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Which iPod are you talking about?
- WiseWeasel, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Because Apple isn't ready to support 3rd party software on that platform yet.
- nickiank, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2That's up to them. If they want to make something that's crippled in some capacity, they're welcome to do so. My point's more that some of the people who get all up-in-arms about this sort of issue will never the less go out and buy the product, and this does little more than reinforce the manufacturer's position that the limitations aren't problems even for people who do a lot of ass-picking over issues like this.
- theboozer, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2HEAR! HEAR!
- MorpheousMarty, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2It is worth mentioning the product was supposed to come out in 2 weeks, so maybe when the product comes out (in just about a fortnight), it might be hacked. We're a bit spoiled if not being to hack a product weeks before the official release is news.
- hongkongfive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2This is total rubbish, stories like this were being written about busting open the iPhone until the 74th day (or U-Day). Jailbreaking the iPod Touch isn't unlikely, it is inevitable.
- HappyScrappy, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Agreed. If you vote with your dollars for stuff that is locked up, you tell companies that you'll pay for stuff that is locked up. And so they'll keep working on products that are locked up right, and eventually they'll get the protection right and now you're screwed because the companies are only offering locked devices.
- nreynolds, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1touche. I actually did read it and was searching for those words, but they were tucked away.
- geminitojanus, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2Nobody is technically forcing you to update. You might need to update to use the WiFi music store for security reasons, but that's up in the air at this point.
And it's not likely any future updates will make it impossible for you to hack in again; they'd need to make it a Trusted platform like the Wii or Xbox or something to do that, in which case initial hacks would have been useless to begin with. - puffinfresh, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Oh :(
- purplepeople, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2i don't understand why apple won't let people run whatever apps they want on their iphone / ipod touch. wouldn't they sell many many more of them if it were possible and easy? what's the point of restricting the use?
- Lousansano, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Man, I hope your right.
- Terc, on 10/10/2007, -3/+4I use a hacked dll (uxtheme.dll) so I can download third party themes that aren't signed by Microsoft and use them. This is a hack, on Windows, without a malicious intent. Generally, the term hack is used when functionality is added.
- Lousansano, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Yeah, I agree. Even though I got one I do not think that the ipod touch is worth 400 dollars with just the bundled apps and abilities.
- Terc, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2whoa, it still has OS X, It just does things differently.
- gfnw, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Yes. Are you suggesting that they are doing it out of malicious intent?
- HappyScrappy, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Apple said updates will *most likely* break 3rd party apps.
http://digg.com/apple/Apple_changes_mind_now_says_don_t_hack_iPhone
I presume you are talking about iPhone here and not iPod Touch, since there are no 3rd party apps for Touch at this time. - jakem1, on 10/10/2007, -3/+3I agree with your sentiment but what does the zune have to do with this?
- pranaysanghavi, on 10/18/2007, -0/+0this has been overcome, ipod has been hacked, jailbroken.
enjoy 3rd party and ifone apps on ipod! . . .. hurray. check out utube -
