spanningsync.com - ementalo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12Perhaps because its for mac?
- smcavoy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9Are you telling me backups of important data can be used for a purpose other than wasting space?
- captaink, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6please be careful!
Spanning Sync managed to delete the complete contents of my Google Calendar...
I suggest you clone your Google Calendar... before trying this! - surfichris, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6I still fail to see why this application would need to connect and exchange data through the Spanning Sync servers, unless I'm totally wrong, could this not all be done client side?
Sorry - it's a great app but I'm not too fond of my data passing through too many servers unnecessarily.
I haven't seen an official response on their blog in comments or here on digg, I've seen the question asked a few times however. - tizz66, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3iCal is available for Windows? :o
- kreinydogg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I love this service.
Go Go Gadget Syncing! - emildew, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Epal, it's a beta. You shouldn't be trusting your un-backed-up data to a beta service. Seriously.
- tico24, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Probably best you don't look in the Apple section of Digg then.
- rorrison, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Title does not say it. What is Spanning Sync and why should I care? Ok, I'll click the link because I'm curious, but that sort of info should be in the description.
Edit: I've read the article and I still don't know what Spanning Sync is. Something to do with Google Calendar, presumably syncs it with something else. - resce, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2As an avid google calendar user, I had never even opened ical before. After downloading this and firing up ical, I was surprised at how similar the look and feel of the 2 were. It's nice to have a local copy of my calendar now. Thanks for the great service.
- l337dexter, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2does anyone know of one of these types of apps for windows and say like...sunbird?
- tico24, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Subscribing is a read-only action. Syncing actually copies data from one to the other and back again.
- fishbert, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I ran into problems too, but mine had to do with untrusted google certificates. Even when I turned off the various certificate checks and could finally log in, the program just wouldn't sync anything. I spent a few hours trying to get it to work...
... then I ran across GCALDaemon and a blog post on how to set it up for iCal.
GCALDaemon took a (small) amount of work to set up properly, but it's actually working on my computer (unlike Spanning Sync).
It also *doesn't require handing over your GMail login information*, and it works across multiple platforms (for those not on a Mac, or who use Mozilla Calendar or other such programs).

(http://nethope.blogsome.com/2007/01/15/gcaldaemon-beta-2/) - MonkeyFarts, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3"I don't get it? Why would someone actually write a piece of software, when, chances are, it already exists on windows?"
I don't get it. Are you retarded, just trolling, or both? - neosublime, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Well, Iusually have no issues with beta software, but I guess I'm due. It wouldn't work for me. It didn't destroy anything, I just couldn't get it to work.I'll wait for the next release and try again.
- milkhatesyou, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Uninstall/Reinstall : Simple fix, worked for me. Good Luck!
- mikepictor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I would guess because he wants to run the software as a subscription service.
- sunetos, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It's terribly easy to backup your google calendars, and instructions for this task are provided in the Spanning Sync readme. It also offers to automatically backup your iCal files to the desktop when you first run it. It covers its bases pretty well, so as long as you take the 30 seconds of effort to back up, I think it's worth trying it early to help them test it.
- Takuro, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2When I entered my gmail login data, I got this error:
CFPropertyListCreateFromXMLData said: Cannot parse a NULL or zero-length data
Looks like they have some issues to work out... - EpaL, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Same here. Trashed both mine and my wife's Google calandars - argh!!!!
... and don't say backup - that is the one of the reasons that this program exists! - goodieyux3, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Loving it so far.
It would be nice to have more Google services and Apple apps work together like this.
Thanks Charlie from Spanning Sync. - fishbert, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It shouldn't, but I suspect it does because they want to (eventually) have control over the process for monetization purposes.
GCALDaemon offers the same functionality as Spanning Sync, but without the security concerns of handing over your login information.
See my post a bit above this thread for more details. - opticrime, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Re BB->iCal->GCal->iCal->BB, all you need is this software plus PocketMacBerry, and you're set. Only problem is that it's not over the air to the Blackberry... but if you can get iCalSync working on your Blackberry, then you're set. (iCalSync doesn't work on my Bell Mob. BB 7250, alas)
- craftyshrew, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1BBerry -> iCal -> gCal -> Change Event Info -> gCal -> iCal -> BBerry...
I've been dreaming about this for a while. - fishbert, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1GCALDaemon... see my post a bit above for more info.
- erictheninja, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Today at 14:35 GMT (9:35a ET/6:35a PT) we quietly reopened the public beta of Spanning Sync." Too bad quietly doesn't apply once it's dugg.
- emildew, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It could be done client-side, but it's a pain in the ass, at least for people like me who aren't interested in writing a program to take my iCal calendar, save it as a .ics file, compare the changes to the last time I saved it, and upload only those changes into my gCal calendar. And vice versa.
I had set up a horrible hacky trick using subscribed calendars to get gCal to sync with my Treo 650 (Palm), but even then it was stupid and more hassle than it was worth. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Why do you need this application at all? iCal and google both support the iCal format. There is a tutorial here: http://www.tuaw.com/2006/04/13/howto-subscribe-to-a-google-calendar-using-ical/
- antdude, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1http://duggmirror.com/apple/Spanning_Sync_Public_Beta_Re_Opens/
- jendrik, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yes. That works, but subscribing to Google Calendar doesn't allow you to add and edit events in iCal.
- rorrison, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2Found it: "the service that syncs Apple iCal with Google Calendar". Now why couldn't the submitter have put that in the article description? I don't have an Apple, so it's totally irrelevant to me.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -7/+3What is a mac?
- baratunde, on 10/12/2007, -5/+1thus, beta. like gmail
- supermajic, on 10/12/2007, -22/+2I don't get it? Why would someone actually write a piece of software, when, chances are, it already exists on windows?
