- crackah, on 10/11/2007, -14/+96No sim No buy
How will i be able to sell it off after 2-3 years of use, for the latest top spec gadget...
I wont. - OneManArmy, on 10/11/2007, -4/+73An iPhone without a SIM is a no-go in Europe.
- totorototoro, on 10/11/2007, -5/+67No removable SIM? That...seems a bit odd.
- KSUdesigner, on 10/11/2007, -3/+62It'll probably just be a button in iTunes that says "edit in iPhoto." It does have a camera so maybe it'll detect when you've taken new photos and automatically import them into iPhoto.
-=|user_name_at_top_of_post - lkmbrd, on 10/11/2007, -22/+75No SIM card and required 2 year contract? No thanks.
- zackkitzmiller, on 10/11/2007, -20/+72@Mgkwho. Everyone hates you and you're stupid-ass signature. Just give up.
- lgivens, on 10/11/2007, -4/+54The iPhone does have a SIM. I spoke to an Apple employee following the Jan. keynote and he pointed out the SIM slot. It's on the top. If you can find photos, you'll see it. This Digg author is a bit off-key.
- Lounger540, on 10/11/2007, -1/+43SIM cards are relevant, because some people prefer to use more than one phone with the same service. I wouldn't want to bring an iPhone out with me snowboarding for instance and would like to be able to swap it into some cheap Nokia.
- w3bsmith, on 10/11/2007, -12/+53A 2 year contract? That's completely normal and not new news.
- cleverboy, on 10/11/2007, -2/+40I'm pretty sure this is an unintended lie. Jobs specifically noted in his keynote: "Let's take a look at the top now-- with got a place, a little tray for your SIM card." Timecode 12:50 on the iPhone introduction video on Apple's website. iPhone's distributed for testing, etc, prior to the shipping date? I'm betting THEY don't have removeable SIMs. Why? Because it would be somewhat troublesome if they got into the wrong hands.
- bellisland, on 10/11/2007, -3/+40From Steve Jobs Keynote on the iPhone as he is going through the design he shows the top of the phone and says "We've got a place, a little tray for your sim card". So I am guessing there is a place for the SIM and its not just hiding.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -8/+44I believe it, cingular can't handle ichat. They don't even have "over the air" mp3z for download as ringtones. They have a horrible, slow, overpriced data network
- w3bsmith, on 10/11/2007, -3/+37The only reason you would be dugg down is for not reading the advertising given by Apple: http://apple.com/iphone/
It's completely mac and windows compatible, just like the ipod. That's because it uses itunes as it's interface. - rwallen, on 10/11/2007, -3/+31The article doesn't say iPhoto is the ONLY way to interact with it, just that it is one way to.
"that the iPhone will interact with the Mac OS through iPhoto as well as iTunes but not show up on the desktop as a drive." - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -2/+29ha, probably our old friend "windows scanner and camera wizard"
- ParisSeth, on 10/11/2007, -4/+30It does have a camera. Maybe that is the reason for iPhoto interface. But what about PC?
- TimmyGUNZ, on 10/11/2007, -7/+31Because we all know adding the AT&T name is going to magically fix network problems!
If I remember correctly, wasn't AT&T's wireless network complete ***** before it became Cingular? - TimmyGUNZ, on 10/11/2007, -5/+25Sounds like they're embedding it into the phone. If that's the case, I wonder how the law that allows people to unlock their phones will come into play in this case.
- Lazrius, on 10/11/2007, -2/+22In the keynote address Steve Jobs said there was a SIM card tray. Go to 39 min and 12 seconds in to see it...
- siestaguy, on 10/11/2007, -1/+20That's the main number for Apple
- ericdano, on 10/11/2007, -5/+24Drool......
Within 24 hours someone will have it opened up, and we'll see all the "other" things that you can do to it, like add a bigger flash card, change out the SIM, etc, etc. Just like Apple TV - snapcase, on 10/11/2007, -2/+21No sim, no battery access, no discount for contract... No thanks.
I like seeing a phone with a relatively innovative design and some nice features, but I've seen nothing that makes me wanna ditch my LG vx8600 for this. I think cell phones are already too locked up and proprietary, so why would i want to get one that's even worse in that regard from apple? - noahhoward, on 10/11/2007, -3/+22Why are the comments pointing out the SIM slot from the keynote getting burried? Am I to understand that if the guy whos company invented the thing says it has a card slot but joe schmo says otherwise I'm to believe Joe Schmo?
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -5/+23that shot looks legit
- kevinwiz, on 10/11/2007, -4/+20http://taiwan.cnet.com/sharedmedia/Computer%20channel/feature/2007macworld/iphone_04.jpg
removable sim, picture from macworld. sorry for bad quality - kevinwiz, on 10/11/2007, -1/+17that shot is from the keynote
- howinsidious, on 10/11/2007, -11/+27I hope that everyone having puppies and kittens over the SIM card issue realizes two things:
1) As Steve mentioned in the keynote, there's a pop-out tray for your SIM card. You can switch AT&T SIMs out super-simple.
2) I know that the iPhone is GSM, but if you hate AT&T, Apple, and GSM that much, why don't you complain this ferociously about your CDMA carrier and EVERY SINGLE PHONE they put out? CDMA phones don't use SIMs. You can't switch the number on your CDMA phone without calling your carrier. And if you want to switch to a number that's not on your account (i.e. your friend's?) FORGET ABOUT IT. Maybe you should stop complaining so hard about your lack of reading and audio comprehension when it was clearly stated there's a SIM tray on the iPhone, and start attacking the entire CDMA standard instead for not giving you that option in the first place.
Goddamn children. - abhiroop, on 10/11/2007, -4/+20"I still can't grasp how they can not give somewhat of a discount for signing up for a two year contract?!?!"
Umm dude, this is AFTER the discount, the price they are offering is the discounted price. - mikev, on 10/11/2007, -10/+25yeah i'm sure this is apple trying to piss everyone off... :/
cingular is forcing them to stick to certain parts of their contract, this is probably one of them. if not, apple would have added a voip application - DelMonte, on 10/11/2007, -2/+17You're right, not only Steve mentioned a SIM tray, but they also indicated where it was:
http://taiwan.cnet.com/sharedmedia/Computer%20channel/feature/2007macworld/iphone_04.jpg
This shot is from the keynote, and the "SIM" with the arrow is from the original picture, it wasn't added.
So as far as we know from Apple, there IS a SIM tray in the iPhone... - r3zonance, on 10/11/2007, -2/+16Except for showing up as 8.0Gb in iTunes. My 4.0Gb iPod Mini always showed up as 3.9Gb, because of a separate partition with the software on it, and the fact that 8.0Gb never formats to 8.0Gb.
- TimmyGUNZ, on 10/11/2007, -4/+18That's because CDMA is the red headed step child of networks and the majority of the world uses GSM.
- Anchanar, on 10/11/2007, -4/+18If I recall correctly there is a spot for a SIM. The models at mac world had what looked like a small slide out in the very top. Unless they changed their design between then and now... I think I recall Job's saying something about it too.
- Seidoger, on 10/11/2007, -2/+15Oh wow, Digg has reached a new low.
"Oh yeah there's a SIM slot, here it is: *link the keynote* , check it out at *time in the keynote*"
And it gets dugg down. What are you, radical Anti-SIM groups?! Hello.. - lnxaddct, on 10/11/2007, -1/+14There is a sim, Steve Jobs showed the slot at the keynote. This is bad info, I think the no ichat thing might be bad info as well.
- leth4l, on 10/11/2007, -2/+14see you in 3 years sucka!
- triscuitbiscuit, on 10/11/2007, -3/+15To me SIM cards are one of the things I like about Cingular with the ability to easily switch your phones on the fly. Big big mistake apple because I am sure that I am not the only one to feel that way.
- GuyNamedNate, on 10/11/2007, -7/+18The iPhone just isn't appealing to me either. It definitely has a lot of people excited though, and I'll bet that most of the good ideas in the iPhone will make their way to a more suitible device (one with 3G, 3rd party apps, choice of service provider, SIM card and other extensibility mechanisms, tactile feedback etc. etc.).
With the exploding adoption rate of Windows Mobile 6, I'll bet HTC or another device maker will be the one to step up. - madmage, on 10/11/2007, -3/+14Picasa, they're partnering with Google for Maps, why not in photos too?
- bitwiseplatypus, on 10/11/2007, -0/+10Picasa is free.
- TimmyGUNZ, on 10/11/2007, -2/+11It has been my experience that those who are very "tech savvy" tend to avoid CDMA phones at all costs. Unless of course they live in an area where their only quality coverage exists on a CDMA network.
The simple fact is that gadget freaks who love cutting edge cell phones are not the core market for Verizon. - totallyAMAZING, on 10/11/2007, -1/+9Apple really knows the features you want, and how to include enough stuff you just won't put up with to sink their own ship.
1. No SIM
2. No removable battery
3. No 3rd party apps at launch
Kind of sounds like it's not really your phone, but something Apple will let you use for $600. - HappyScrappy, on 10/11/2007, -2/+10You can change SIMs. There's a tray/slot at the top. No, the battery isn't accessible.
- noahhoward, on 10/11/2007, -2/+9Unless Apple posts something stating otherwise, their phone has a pop-up sim card slot. It was in the keynote, and I doubt they'e had time to reengineer. Also, I'm fairly certain it's illegal for them to remove it.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7no.
- joegibes, on 10/11/2007, -4/+11Hey so I called it and it said: "Thanks for calling Apple. We are closed." and some other junk.
Actually, the first time I called, I dialed it incorrectly -- 966 instead of 996. I got a guy named Jeremy's answer machine and he said that he was in no way affiliated with Apple computers and to check the number you were calling. - superkendall, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6Cleverboy, you just validated your nickname. That's the post insightful post I've seen this whole thread.
- jk47h3, on 10/11/2007, -19/+25I still can't grasp how they can not give somewhat of a discount for signing up for a two year contract?!?!
- brianbennett, on 10/11/2007, -1/+7Considering what must be less than stellar battery life for this thing, a replaceable battery would be pretty useful. Then again, I don't know anyone who keeps a spare battery for their phone.
