- Jaanus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+25Guys - you really shouldn't be using this version as it's really buggy. Please see http://share.skype.com/sites/mac/2006/06/skype_for_mac_with_video_comin.html for our comment.
regards,
Jaanus from Skype - GrizzlyAdams, on 10/12/2007, -2/+15Signed in with no problems! The video works perfectly with the iSight on my 20" Core Duo iMac. THANK YOU for this I can't tell you how long I've been waiting for it's release. By the way for those whom it concerns this is a universal binary.
- Scourge, on 10/12/2007, -3/+13Read the title a few more times and you might just get it...
- jamesong, on 10/12/2007, -5/+15How about you stop being cheap and upgrade
- neondiet, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11That is not an official Skype site. All you people downloading something from an unqualified source are nuts. You have no clue whether what you're installing is genuine or has been tampered with. I'm going to wait until this is available direct from Skype.com
- jonshipman, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10"This button will be removed later"
- randyandy, on 10/12/2007, -5/+14From a security perspective. I wouldn't touch that file with a 10 foot pole.
- sriggins, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8I agree, in general this will be a great social engineering trick used by hackers on the Mac in the future, so its best to get into safe computing practices now while we're still untouched.
- Goldenatom, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7If you're behind a router, it won't do that.
- oOLiquidNightOo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Sidenote: is anyone else having trouble with the ability to edit their comments within the time frame? It says 3 minutes but (to me) appears to be a fraction of that ..
- msgreenf, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8if you read the comments, skype pulled it right away after they found it was released
- LoungeActx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Yes, it was pulled from the Skype site because it tends to delete your contacts:
From TUAW:
"According to a Skype developer, an old and unstable version of Skype for Mac has been leaked onto file sharing networks across the globe. If you spot this file, do not download it! "It is an internal unstable development version, and thus it is extremely buggy" and "it will destroy your contacts and other data". We wouldn't want that now would we?
Since the Windows version of Skype gained video conferencing support in March, many Mac user have felt left behind and stuck with the non-video capable version of Skype. Fortunately, this warning also comes with some good news; Skype version 2.0 for the Mac is nearly ready for primetime. The screenshot of a video capable of Skype on the left of this post is the tantalizing proof." - Ireland, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8I tried it, it's buggy to *****. Now how do I get my skypeout contacts back?
- oOLiquidNightOo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5ok. thanks boo, i wondered as much.
- boolean, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Just had a video conference between my Macbook (iSight) and iBook (Logitech quickcam express), worked great. Thanks and digg..
- thefirelane, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5I dug your earlier one, but this one gets a down vote until you learn how 'reply' works
- ross., on 10/12/2007, -1/+5No worky for me...G5 iMac
- boolean, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Using Skype will enable video conferencing between Windows, Mac and probably Linux platforms. On the other hand iChat will be limited to Mac users only.
- oOLiquidNightOo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4i'm curious, i'll admit i have skype but i really don't use it alot. apparently they are incorporated video now, which sounds nice. but .. wouldn't it make more sense for mac users to use iChat so that they can take full advantage of 264 etc? i apologize if my question is ignorant.
- rawheadrex, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4What do you mean, Apple "open up" iChat?? iChat's audio/video is based on a standard (SIP), so it's already "opened up". Anyone can design a software to be interoperable with iChat.
Or, did you mean, Apple should "write" (and freely give out) iChat for Win/Linux?? Somehow, I doubt that would happen, when the ease of use and high quality of iChat is supposed to be one incentive for Apple to get people to "switch". - honesttussey, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8Mirror: http://skypebeta.webhop.net
enjoy! - Drywall420, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3NOTICE: I have a MBP and I was having problems signing in but if you go to ~/user/library/application support/ and delete the Skype folder and then go to ~/user/library/caches and do the same, it may work for you as it did for me. This may only work for people who have used Skype on their Mac before this Beta. Best of luck it seems to work great for me. Great Digg!
- thefirelane, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6This one is probably honest... the next link like this will probably be a virus.
- Detro, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Please read the description given by CasaMan. It was taken off of skype.com after a few hours, hence you would have to find another place to host it :)
- boolean, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3The new interface is much better than the previous releases. When this release becomesofficial, I won't have many reasons to use iChat anymore.
- yathosho, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3afaik it works with trillian pro aswell
- mp3dog, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"...it is extremely buggy. IT MAY AND WILL DESTROY YOUR CONTACTS AND OTHER DATA. It is completely unsupported and if you experience problems due to using this version, you're on your own."
So is this just a scare tactic to discourage us from using a "less than perfect" product that carries the Skype name?
Also, "may and will destroy data" ???
So which is it then, MAY or WILL ???????? - joerod, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3i can wait till mac takes over... better product, better inovation, just better
- bortuzar, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Worked for me, i could login on my MBP. Havent tried the Camera yet. At least works in the preferences of Skype.
- fredsterss, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3dont apologise my dear man/woman, but skype is great because more people use it, and it is fairly standard for business users to communicate with, as well as the fact you can make calls to "normal" phones with skype.
- ronaldpoi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2They will... there's even an screenshot in the blog. I hate when Mac/Linux versions of Skype doesn not have the same feautres that Windows versions have, but this shows the Mac team is finally working very hard...
- n3il89, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2everything works great on my MBP...I've tested the video and it acts differently then iChat's use of iSight. Skype's video is flipped. So if I'm moving to my left it looks like I'm moving to my right. It is the anti-mirror effect. A little different and I guess it doesn't matter but I thought it was interesting enough to note.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5What a p.o.s. compared with iChat. The world would be a better place should Apple open up iChat and make a Windows/Linux version.
- Timjacobs, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Works like a charm!
- LoungeActx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I don't even get an edit option anymore when I submit a comment. As soon as I post it says that my post occured 5 minutes ago.
- CasaMan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@Drywall420
That helped me! tnx. - macman81, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Works well... hung at first, but I force-quit, deleted the ~/Library files, and just registered a new account. Sweet ^_^ --from an iMac G5
- Greyarea, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Apple wouldn't gain anything from this. Remember - they're in it for the money.
- JoeyDeacon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1iChat mirrors your image if I remember rightly so as not to scare the user with what they really look like. I for one am digging this because I've been waiting for months for a decent cross platform video chat app.
- billybob476, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2[sarcasm]
Whaaaat? Apple existsonly for the betterment of society as a whole!
[/sarcasm] - antdude, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1We're Sorry
You have requested a page that is not currently available due to data transfer restrictions. If the page you requested is yours, click here for more information. - rblinne, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2This may be the one good technique to put malware on a Mac. I switched to get away from that crap (or more specifically keep my kids from puting malware on my computer). I'll wait for an official release. This is worth a digg to know it finally, FINALLY is coming! Thanks Jaanus for the official link.
- newdigger, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1PC users DONT need to use AIM to video chat with iChat users. Trillian works just fine.
- tepbd59, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1well, now that the cat's out of the bag, might as well release the beta officially...that way I can finally SEE my parents when i call them with skype!
- lastknight, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1WARNING!
mac to PC conversation goes like a breeze while MAC to MAC (older client) result in random crashes of BOTH parts...
Take care! - slime73, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3Actually, Mac users can video chat with AIM users in iChat.
- ho0ber, on 10/12/2007, -4/+4Skype is a network abusive piece of crap. If your Internet connection is good enough, it turns you into a "supernode" and starts routing calls through your connection. This happened to two or three people at my University last year, and completely boned our network traffic.
- dbr_onix, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1It was never pulled, it just wasn't supposed to be released in the first place. It's an internal beta, so it's really unstable..
But, it's great to see their deffintly working on a new OS X client.. Not having video on the Mac version (Which is a version behind the Windows one) is fairly annoying..
To a comment I just saw lower down, "This may be the one good technique to put malware on a Mac", indeed, an extremely good way, which is how a lot of Windows virus's spread, a tempting file/program, that installs crap.. How many people just installed or ran this random DMG of a random site, before it was verifed by the Skype site? Quite a few.. Most people, when asked to put in their admin password will quite happily shove it in without wondering if the software is real, but due to the huge spread of Windows (Regardless of if it's good or bad), such "Lets hope they install it"-virus's aren't going to appear for OS X any time soon, and due to the fact OS X's default network setup, it's less likely to be infected with a worm (Also helped by the less-wide-spread-ness).. But semi-social-engineering attacks, like this one could have been would be pretty effective, since very few Mac users use Virus Scanners.. If this installer just so happens to install Skype, along with something more.. evil, how would you know?
..regardless of platform, it's generally a bad idea to install anything form unknowen sources, unless it's been verified a lot (And not by one site)
- Ben - Buschaga, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Go ahead and play if it's on an extra machine... but if you depend on your machine I'd be careful. This beta is buggy and has a tendency to erase your contact data.
- byxba, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Looks like Digg has struck again. The site won't load due to "You have requested a page that is not currently available due to data transfer restrictions. If the page you requested is yours, click here for more information." Oops!! Haha!
