- kajoob, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12Have you tried Chax? It's a add-on for iChat that gives it much needed functionality. I used to hate iChat until I discovered Chax. It's uber-cool and the price is right. Worth a try...
http://www.ksuther.com/chax/ - ianweir, on 10/12/2007, -3/+14Wow, I'm dancing. Now if only the mac version were on par with the PC version.. Now THAT would be something worth a digg.
- angelp, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10I'd rather be two steps behind in this than two steps ahead in viruses, spyware, and crashes.
- drn666, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8@beepop717 - Those of us with Intel Mac's are happy to have a version of the -same- Skype that doesn't chew up 80% of your CPU when you conference with 4 other people. Translating PowerPC works well, but realtiming 4 audio streams can tax the core duo just a touch.
That said - what a waste of time comment you made. - rasterbator, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7When will Adium X support Skype features? I prefer this app to iChat.
- gerkin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7It's pretty reliable for me, at least on Tiger ... getting it on par with the windows version with video would be a welcome addition though.
- benadamson, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Thank God this is finally available. For some reason Skype took longer to load in Rosetta than Photoshop did.
And yes... also still waiting for Flip4Mac! - CedanticPunt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4macosiscrap: +blocked - won't have to read your ill-informed fanboy banter anymore...
- Dan005, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7Finally! Now I want Video, get to work Skype.
- brenthals, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6I was just looking for this earlier this morning, and it wasn't available yet. Now, when will Flip4Mac have a universal binary available?
- bebop717, on 10/12/2007, -6/+9It does NOT support Video, what a waste of time update.
- joolz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2skype for mac is pretty far behind the windows version i guess. but you should be glad you don't use the Linux version. if you manage to get it to work, it works poorly, at best. We don't have ALSA support yet god damnit, and we got the infamous "error with sound device" bug that was introduced over a year ago and have not been fixed, this is a highly critical bug i might add.
this is a textbook example of the dangers of using a proprietary protocol and closed software. its too bad the Windows version works really good - noeljohnhoward, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6next version of iChat will have skype features
so says Leon Hadrow - angelp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Where did I state that the Mac doesn't crash? Oh that's right, I didn't. I said PCs are ahead when it comes to that...learn to read.
- iamtheratio, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Exactly what I was thinking.
Not a day goes by that I dont check to see if flip4mac is universal yet. - dcheung, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1As much as standards are needed, have you tried skype? Gizmo is great but, I could not get a connection between my nated firewalled connection to my gf's nated firewalled connection. Doing video with any of those products OR file transfering has the same headaches.
Skype is free, works flawlessly with any network, and the video is actually the best thing i've seen. For quality, it kicks the crap out of ichat/aim video and yahoo.
FYI: I use my isight on my windows pc...no problems here. - ingoldsby, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I just use the video chat with iChat for video at this point. It works really well, providing everyone has an iSight (which is not always the case, unfortunately).
- dipswitch, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Skype sucks. Stick to standards. http://www.voip-info.org/wiki/view/Skype
- matt0ne, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5about bloody time!!! hello, video?
- pamuckraker, on 04/10/2009, -0/+1Skype is the type of product that doesn't jive with either Apple or AT&T's business plans of monopolization. Neither will talk about the alleged federal violations. For more information on this issue, here is an article to read: http://www.yourlawyer.com/topics/overview/Iphone-S ...
- dombi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1To play wmv on Intel Macs, try Popwire... it seems to work about the same as Flip4Mac for playback.
http://www.popwire.com/product_info.php?cPath=1&products_id=7 - Ireland, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Yea and remote white-boarding, where all parties could mess with the same document at the same time. I'll be interested to see how that works out.
Now back to Skype. Boy it loads alot faster, 8-10 seconds and you can make your call. Thank God for that. - bebop717, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2@ drn666 Well if they could utilize the video feature it would benefit more mac users in the end. And if it runs really sluggish on your fancy new intel core duo you could always turn it off and just do audio chat. Would rather have a option to do video then none at all.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Great, but skype for windows still has highest priority :( Comparing Mac 1.4.0.49 or Linux 1.2.0.18 vs. Windows 2.5.0.72 (beta)
- CedanticPunt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1iChat also works with people with AIM at the other end on a PC (not Triton though). I've had issues, but nothing that a reboot of the PC end wouldn't fix.
- CedanticPunt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1standards are all very well and good, but you're just beating your head against a wall sometimes going against the flow. If all your friends and family have MSN/Skype/whatever, then you can get something that works with them, or be completely left out. Sad, but true...
- dmorley123, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Now SkypeMate for Mac has been released, so many of the 3rd party USB phones are fully operational for Mac. http://www.von-phone.com/mac-compatible-skype-phones.php
- shiftear, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@dcheung: first, I use a mac, so until skype comes with video (if ever), this feature is meaningless to me (and, no, I will not switch to windows). next, never had any problems with gizmo and firewalls, and I do travel alot between various networks. and finally, being SIP compliant, actually helps me, I use asterisk with my gizmo account and, dial out & receive calls directly on my home phone. so, for me, gizmo is better than skype.
also, seems that linux isn't on skype video priority list. that's a shame. - srhall, on 10/12/2007, -4/+4Is it just me, or did that take for freakin' ever!
- savantelite, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Can you Import your songs from Itunes?
- hordak, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1:( I have a feeling that eBay is going to stop Linux development for Skype. (Hopefully, someone can tell us otherwise.) I just hope Adobe doesn't do the same thing for Flash on Linux.
- dombi, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1For playing wmv files, you can try to use PopWire, that one is a Universal Binary:
http://www.popwire.com/product_info.php?cPath=1&products_id=7 - wonginator1221, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2I WANT MY VIDEO...
kinda sucks that were way behind - Zman771, on 10/12/2007, -9/+8FINALLY! in capitals! with an exclamation point! I must digg it now!
- shiftear, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Yep. Use Gizmo project. SIP Power.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Yep, You just have to accept that if you're on a Mac, You will always have to wait your turn for most applications.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2Repeat after me: The system that most people use (Windows) will always have the highest priority and that is the way things should be.
Get over it. - manowatt, on 10/12/2007, -5/+3Amen to that. Give us some reliability and video, then you can have a digg.
- Proginoskes, on 10/12/2007, -5/+2Does it support video yet?
- TheManiacKY, on 10/12/2007, -9/+2Not to sound like an advertisement. But I have use VersionTracker Pro on my Mac. and I was running the new version yesterday because it detected a new version of Skype was out and downloaded it for me. This really helps in keeping track of all my applications that aren't Universal yet to when they do ship I know I'll get them ASAP and not have to keep checking constantly. Glad to know its a universal binary! Digg
- robotsongs, on 10/12/2007, -8/+1Wait, what happened to the G5 blowup vifeo? It just got ripped off the front page!
- jhunt, on 10/12/2007, -9/+1Thank ***** god.
- kolop1, on 10/12/2007, -17/+3 Just like the mac to be 2 steps behind.
