- Nick_Circosta, on 10/12/2007, -5/+20And video calls are very fast :) and no silly errors like iChat about bandwidth
- diggboy101, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14The reason your ISP capped you is because the internet is a series of tubes. You were just dumping onto it like a dump truck.
- Daveecee, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15The fact that you can video conference with people who don't have a mac? I still can't seem to get video chats to work with people who don't use iChat. Now, maybe I can actually vid-chat with more than one friend.
- Dracker, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13So Windows gets 2.5, Mac gets 1.5, and Linux gets 1.3?
WTF, Skype? If you're gonna port, port a recent version! - siMac, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10Actually I'd rather they didn't; proper native versions are preferable to sloppy ports.
Still, it'd be nice to see more symmetry between the platforms. - Daveecee, on 10/12/2007, -4/+12"Why is the parent being modded down?"
Probably for the way he stated his opinion: immaturely. - btstewart, on 08/26/2009, -1/+9You can download the new 1.3 beta for Linux. I am not sure what is new about it, though.
http://www.skype.com/download/skype/linux/13beta.html - Daveecee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6The speed is actually quite decent. The only other program I could get my webcam to work with others was Yahoo Messenger... And the speed on Yahoo leaves something to be desired... So the Skype video is gladly welcomed. And as you can see from the screenshot, the quality is nice.
- MasteRR, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5"You can download the new 1.3 beta for Linux."
It doesn't support video. About the only change is a couple bug fixes and the addition of ALSA support. - weisen, on 10/12/2007, -9/+14It's more true if you don't consider Linux a "type of computer"
- KissTheRing, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7I haven't ever used Skype video, how is this different/better/worse than iChatAV video conferencing
- sud0n1m, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Awesome. I've been waiting for this. Im slightly limited by iChat AV! Voice quality I think may be better in skype too!
- theciuffo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Definitely a lot cleaner, just keeps the bare minimum in site and everything else out of the way
- slstsang, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Great job Skype, one more universal binary app for mac. if only we can have adobe/macromedia apps rolling out sooner
- bolero421, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4You can still call wired phones for free (SkypeOut). Don't use the "Call ordinary phones" button at the bottom, though. Just enter +1xxx-xxx-xxxx in the field at the top where it says "Skype Name or number"
- KissTheRing, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5good point, is there any difference in audio or video quality
- siMac, on 10/12/2007, -7/+11Damn, I was on 8mb broadband for the last eighteen months, just waiting for Skype to get their arses in gear with the Mac version. Then I move house to the countryside with a whopping 512k connection and boom! - instant video Skype. *****.
- trakais, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4the version numbers don't compare. the mac version is superior to the windows version in some aspects.
- pornel, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5because it's alwasy better to run native apps? and Mac version feels like a proper Mac app, not some quick'n'dirty hacked port.
- OneManArmy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Skype for Mac 1.5 Beta includes a complete overhaul of the look-and-feel of Skype for Mac. Looks great!! check out the new changes here
http://share.skype.com/sites/mac/2006/07/new_face_of_skype_for_mac.html - Prod_Deity, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3If you NEED to use SMS, use this handy dandy SMS widget:
http://keakaj.com/products.htm
Granted, it's not integrated with Skype, it's still a good app. - Lewisham, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3It's a shame this doesn't include SMS functionality, surely that must be pretty quick to implement, if all the structure is there for the Windows client?
- donnie_dark0, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Finally! I was disappointed to see when Skype started lagging behind with their mac development, following suit with many other developers becoming progressively Windows-centric. At least they're not as bad as Microsoft, walling up development of MSN Messenger and leaving it to rot.
- tacojohn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Um- how to I adjust my video settings? I don't see any video options anywhere? How do you start a video chat? Does the other person need a camera too or can you do one way?
- pornel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Just start call. You can enable video in call window.
BTW: new UI is pretty nice. - Bikechess, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Sweet and it works with iSight. Finally, more than one set of grandparents will get to see my son.
- spoetnik, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Parallels has no iSight support?
- Bootes, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Same. :(
I went from my 30/5 Fios to 512k/128k "Wireless ADSL" - bigBadOwl, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4You need to download the "Video Preview" version. The regular 1.5 beta doe not include video. http://download.skype.com/macosx/Skype_BETA_1.5.0.47_Video_preview.dmg
- EpaL, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Thankyou Skype! With 4 days to go too...
A fully loaded MacBook Pro with Paralells just got even sexier (if that was possible) - CedanticPunt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The real limit with video conferencing is upload speed. You may well find that there isn't much difference with the upload speeds of 512k and 8 meg connections. It might just go up from 256k to 512k or something.
- bolero421, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2As far as I can tell there isn't much of a difference beyond some bug fixes (mac-to-mac video calls don't seem to crash the app any more). The GUI is the same except for some random buttons have been removed / labeled in the preferences.
- Z_Man, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5thank you jesus, i was just thinking yesterday in fact that they need to update!
- trakais, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2i don't see any of this.
- coolbru, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2It seems that the x.48 version is a kind of 'regular' skype - it does not have any video features, but the x.47 version does. Illogical I know, but the changelog page seems to confirm it.
- hexix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Funny. I just ran it and thought it looked a lot nicer than the old version. Feels faster and lighter too.
- DrROX, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Next year we probably will have Linux version 1.3 beta upgraded to 1.3.1 :) Sad but true...
- Wahttehhog, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"Does the other person need a camera too or can you do one way?"
The other person does not need a camera, you can do one way. - Stecchino, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Yeah I love how the GUI is much more Mac-like, more like iChat.
And now with cross-platform video conferencing, iChat for Leopard had better offer the same thing (as well as Yahoo! and MSN Messenger integration) or it will suffer. - cmer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1true. thanks!
- spudnik187, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1siMac, I hope my experience isn't like yours. I was pumped to pick up an iSight after work and test this when I get home.
- plasticated, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Anyone know what codec it uses? Is it as good as the H.264 on iChat?
- isajeep, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Wow, this just worked flawlessly for me. I just had a 50 minute conversation with a friend in New Zealand. She wasn't too happy about being awakened at 8am, though.
- billybob476, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Ummm...if you're running paralells then why would you need the mac version of Skype anyways?
- harpdog, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1ichat AV has been the best video chat program since it came out. My only gripe about it can be problematic connecting behind some routers and firewalls no matter how many ports you open or upnp enabled.
Although the skype video is not as polished as ichat av but in my experience skype has never failed to connect no matter what connection I have been on or what firewall or router I have been behind.
Also skype video works when my macbook is connected through my cellphone on a 3G connection but ichat AV does not work on the same connection.
Skype Video is also cross platform with windows and osx so now we can video chat with our pc friends.
iChat AV should feel threatened as my experiene of skype video today was very good the quality and lip sync is excellent.
I hope then for apple's sake they port ichat over to windows and make it better at connecting through firewalls and routers. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Anyone want to help me put Skype Mac on the USB?
I got the PC instructions:
http://www.gruups.com/usbskype
Please comment on how to do it. - siMac, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Knowing Skype it's almost certainly proprietary.
- RabidFox, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Two are recommend by Skype at the bottom of the page with a link to a driver.
- dmisener, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The codec is On2 Truemotion VP7: http://www.on2.com/company/news-room/press-releases/?id=324
- coolbru, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The current (1.0.x) release is extremely CPU hungry too, plus it's horribly unreliable. Typically I can only make one call in a given session - if I want to call again I often have to re-launch it. It will quite often crash or hang up with no warning or explanation, and display missed calls when you have none.
I just hope this new beta has improved things - downloading now. -
