all free apps :)
no thanks sirius - tastic, on 03/12/2009, -0/+10It's interesting to note that mere use Stayplayr/Starlite and and Pulsar (from Rogue Amoeba) all would appear to violate the Sirius-XM TOS which provide that:
You may not re-skin, re-package, decompile, reverse engineer, disassemble SIRIUS Internet Radio, or construct a media player or interface that accesses SIRIUS Internet Radio. In addition, your use of any products or services that access SIRIUS Internet Radio and are provided by third parties not authorized by SIRIUS constitutes a violation of these Terms, even if you did not create such product or services and/or do not understand how they were created.
And if they have to sue you, even for a "suspected" breach of the TOS, you've agreed to pay their counsel fees:
4. Attorney's Fees: If we take legal action against you in connection with any actual or suspected breach of these Terms, including failure to pay, we will be entitled to recover from you as part of such legal action, and you agree to pay, our reasonable costs and attorneys' fees incurred as a result of such legal action.
Oh, and, there is also this nugget in there:
IN THE UNLIKELY EVENT THAT WE CEASE BROADCASTING THE SERVICE, WHETHER AS A RESULT OF A LIQUIDATION, BANKRUPTCY, OR OTHERWISE, ALL PREPAID SUBSCRIPTIONS WILL BE TREATED AS NONREFUNDABLE.
Probably the worst TOS I've ever read, well, unless you're Sirius-XM. - ngmcs8203, on 03/12/2009, -4/+14I think by overpaying for Howie, the hole, and fat guy on the couch Sirius overestimated the underwhelming influence Howie had.
I still enjoy my XM radio on my commute to and from work (40min one way) but will not be renewing my 6-month "best of Sirius" subscription. - FOR3MAN, on 03/12/2009, -4/+14If it wasn't for Howard, Sirius would already be dead. Don't underestimate his (admittedly diminished) swagger. The stock has been rebounding after being diluted by merger. This company makes money it just has a lot of short term debt. I think they will pull through and this is a great move for them.
- audomatix, on 03/12/2009, -0/+8Actually they had a pretty sound plan. What ***** them up financially beyond repair is the fact that their merger underwent fcc approval which went on for over a year and a half when it should have been a couple months. This is what deteriorated their stock price so much. Also take note that apple is gold as is most of the applications that reach the iphone. today Sirius/XM had over a 20% gain in a ***** economy. Now is actually a great time to invest in them. I would buy a few thousand shares if I were able to. Imagine the financials for the third quarter if the app is successful. I was invested in Sirius while waiting for this merger. It cost me thousands... THANKS FCC! At least the FCC will be replaced soon and hopefully this time with cabinet members who have some sort of rational and aren't ruled by special interest groups.
- pagit, on 03/12/2009, -0/+7On October 6, 2004 Sirius provided a budget of $500 million USD to pay Howard, his staff and general production costs.
As of 11 February 2009, Sirius XM had $3.25 billion in total debt and had until 17 February 2009 to repay $175 million in bonds held by EchoStar. - MacEnvy, on 03/12/2009, -0/+7HS was a huge liability, and will never make Sirius back the $500m he cost them.
- GRAVEWiSH, on 03/12/2009, -0/+7LIQUID METAL!!!!!
- Shaggy3, on 03/12/2009, -0/+7They better do something to fix the disaster that shutting down StarPlayr was.
- KaivenTor, on 03/12/2009, -0/+5This is nice, but it's only a start. Sirius XM needs to build an API for it's online services, allow for more music format streaming options (XM currently streams in WMA format, would be great as an MP3), and the API needs to be available for both Sirius and XM if it's going to do any good. Sirius XM is a content company, why not make the content more accessible and let the developers compete over making better players?
- peestandingup, on 03/12/2009, -0/+5Radio in HD is still sucky radio.
"OMG! The clarity on this douche bag DJ's voice is awesome. And these ads sound great!!" :-/ - SreyaNotfilc, on 03/12/2009, -1/+6I like the newer one with the little kid is saying it. It's soo adorable. Also, I like the one set to the Star Wars Empire theme and the Law and Order theme.
- pagit, on 03/12/2009, -8/+13the HS deal sure didn't help
- robfarrell, on 03/12/2009, -0/+4If it wasn't for you, your comment would have only occurred once. Don't underestimate your (admittedly heightened) ability to copypasta. The comment has been dugg up twice already despite being a reply. This comment makes sense, it's just been said by you already. I think you should delete this and move on with your life.
- nathanbutnet, on 03/12/2009, -2/+6In the scheme of their talent signings, signing Howard was one of the better ones they made although that is not saying much. At least he gives them many hours of programming where people like Oprah, Lance Armstrong, Tony Hawk and other folks who know nothing about radio really don't do squat.
That said I don't think SIRI is making it another year at least in its present form. - arch3r, on 03/12/2009, -0/+4Why does it have to be either or? I'm a stern fan for 20+ years. I also really enjoyed listening to O and A when they were here in DC. Its is possible to like both shows.
- smossner, on 03/12/2009, -1/+5People, this app is not going to be free and it is going to have a monthly charge to stream. Just today, XM stopped their free online streaming service. It is now $8/month to listen to the service online. What makes you think that they are going to stream to an iPhone for free?
- blackinthmiddle, on 03/12/2009, -2/+6That I think is the ultimate problem. There won't be too many shows worth shelling out monthly fees for and you can get Stern on bittorrent if you feel like. It's bad enough I have to pay $30 a month for my cell phone data package. I'm not going to spend more money for stuff I'm probably not going to listen to or I can get by other means.
- Technopundit, on 03/13/2009, -1/+4As I see it, IF I subscribed, a large portion of my subscription cost would go to Howard Stern. I just don't want to spend my money on that sort of thing. My choice / my dollars / my ballot.
- TSCheredar, on 03/12/2009, -2/+5pandora & Last.fm > Paying for radio
- MarkoDaGeek, on 03/12/2009, -1/+4Am I the only one who DOESN'T listen to Howard Stern on SIRIUS? I mean there's nothing wrong with him, his show is funny. But I signed up for SIRIUS for the electronic music selection (which is now extremely limited since they axed Boombox), comedy stations like Raw Dog, news stations etc.
I think Stern is a big asset for SIRIUS but he isn't the reason for their existence. - scoresman, on 03/12/2009, -1/+4oh qua tangin wan
- ChelseaBlacker, on 03/12/2009, -9/+12As an X Howard Stern intern, let me say that while Sirius has amazing people in it, even this type of creative ingenuity in pushing their product forward wont get them out of the royal ***** up they've made financially. The company will never turn a profit. check out the stock for yoruself (SIRI):
http://uk.finance.yahoo.com/echarts?s=SIRI#chart1: ... - mossking, on 03/12/2009, -0/+3I have never even heard an HD radio.
Any way, 22 minutes of ads an hour doers not sound any better. - norcalscan, on 03/12/2009, -2/+5That's okay - we're used to paying extra. We're iPod/iPhone owners.
/iphone owner - Shaggy3, on 03/12/2009, -1/+4I don't see Sirius lasting, I think they need to start giving as much attention to internet radio as they do satellites. Years from now internet radio WILL be accessible everywhere.
The Sirius internet player is pretty much unusable on a Mac, I've used StarPlayr for months to stream and it was great - uninterrupted, high quality sound. Earlier this week StarPlayr announced it was in their best interest to shut down their players on all platforms, and now I can't listen unless I'm in the car. The sound quality in the car is pretty horrible. I will be canceling in a few months if a good internet player doesn't surface. - joerod, on 03/12/2009, -1/+4an app like this was submitted to apple and rejected a couple of weeks ago(http://usirius.starplayr.com/), now they are going to let this app get in?
- DaveXensen, on 03/12/2009, -1/+4The StarPlayr app wasn't rejected, it was just in a limbo where it wasnt approved or rejected (most likely because SiriusXM lawyers got involved and because they've been working on their own app).
A shame though, i used StarPlayr for Windows on a daily basis and was really looking forward to their iPhone app... - neverender, on 03/12/2009, -9/+12the HS deal brought in millions of listeners...wtf are you talking about?
- arigneysd, on 03/12/2009, -1/+4i bought a couple thousand shares whe the stock was at 13 cents.. now it's at 19.. and i believe it will go up significantly in the next few years. if not.. it's only a couple hundred dollar loss :) so far up 52%
in sirius i believe.
now we just need a blackberry port and it's all good - jgaspar, on 03/12/2009, -2/+5O & A owe their entire career to Howard.
- xR0e, on 03/12/2009, -0/+3THIS is gonna be SWEET!
- nathanbutnet, on 03/12/2009, -0/+3This is a good move, but sadly they aren't going anywhere due to their incredibly flawed strategy. They are focusing on hardware and software now!? Really? The story of SIRI was written long ago when they figured all they had to do was sign big talent at any price and do most nothing else like, oh, I don't know, improve reception.
- sq2shooter, on 03/12/2009, -0/+3The question is whether they will come out with it before they go belly up. They bought some time with their recent acquisition of a loan but time is running out quickly for them to start making money. It will be a miracle if they last through the year.
- ghostofpanty, on 03/12/2009, -0/+3why will people pay for this when there are tons of free apps to stream music like Shoutcast and Pandora
- tastic, on 03/12/2009, -1/+4Until you find out the App is $29.99 monthly or something equally ridiculous.
- brownsin07, on 03/12/2009, -1/+4Fa Fa Flo Hi

BA BA BOOWEEEEEE!
babababababa booey ba booey - mossking, on 03/12/2009, -0/+3Pretty old information.
- spiffyfitz, on 03/12/2009, -0/+2I miss The System, I wish they didn't switch to Area when Sirius and XM merged.
- timhisu, on 03/12/2009, -0/+2XM 202, Sirius 197!
- PoisonousDrool, on 03/12/2009, -1/+3I subscribed to XM for about three years. Each year I would pay in advance for the whole year. I wasn't happy with the service so I didn't renew. They left the service on for a few months after the year ended and kept sending invoices (and robo-calls). Now they have a collection agency bothering me. Great way to never get me to come back and I have three cars with XM radios.
- Paulish, on 03/13/2009, -0/+2Damn, I just have an iPod. Where do I get one of these "iPhone + iPod"s I keep hearing about?
- Tenareth, on 03/12/2009, -0/+2Until the FCC shows up and says "Oh, you're free, we control you now".
They must be a pay service to avoid the crushing blow of the FCC. - CoronaVegas, on 03/12/2009, -0/+2That would explain the recent fee increase for online access.
- nathanbutnet, on 03/12/2009, -0/+2I woulda been on board neverender except for the fact they now also want to charge for online access next time I renew? Get real *****. They are losing a long-time subscriber come fall (if they last that long).
- tokabowla, on 03/12/2009, -0/+2Sirius has to create the (non-music) content. That means they gotta pay people. To do that they have to charge the customer.
If your only into music it's not a good deal, unless you like music they won't play on terrestrial radio. But if you dig Howard it's a small price to pay. -
