- Pundan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+42Is there anything to not hate about RealPlayer?
- OriginalLucid1, on 10/12/2007, -1/+29My speakers only go to 11.
- kendra2012, on 10/12/2007, -2/+27It goes to 11!
- slasherx, on 10/12/2007, -4/+23You mean http://duggmirror.com/apple/Secret_volume_control_in_Quicktime/
There is still a hold up on loading because some script is stalling it. So here's the text:
If you have ever watched media on media players such as Quicktime or Windows Media Player, you will probably have come across the situation where the volume is too low (even with the volume slider at max). Sure, you can adjust the volume controls in your OS or on the speakers, but sometimes this is either too fiddly or the volume knob is at max.
Well if you are using Quicktime, you can access a secret volume control by pressing Shift and clicking on the volume slider. This give you additional volume boost and best of all, doesn’t affect your OS volume settings (which is something I hate in Real Player) .
I’m sure people will tell me that this ’secret’ volume control is really old news - but meh, I was only shown this today so it’s big news to me :) . - freff, on 10/12/2007, -1/+19I don't know if this is addresses in the article or not, as the site when down quicker than a $5 whore, but I absolutely can't stand media players that commandeer your system's volume controls. RealPlayer was the first to start. You'd open up a file, and then if you wanted to turn down the sound or mute it, you'd be muting the volume on your computer. Which was annoying if you were listing to music or something.
Even worse, if you just turned the sound down, and then forgot to turn it back up before closing the file, the sound on your computer would be muted until you remembered that you had to go back into RealPlayer, and turn it back up. Horrible program, horrible media format, and I'm glad it's pretty much gone.
But now I noticed that other media players are doing some of the same things. The new WinAmp has these same type of global volume controls. Why do these companies do that? I don't want a program to have these type of global volume control abilities on my computer. If I have WinAmp running, I should be able to just turn down the volume on it without muting some other media that I might have running as well. And for God's sake, don't keep that volume level muted when I end a program.
Sorry for the rant, but this has been bugging me for awhile. - UsernameTaken, on 10/12/2007, -21/+35Even better: use VLC player ( http://www.videolan.org/ ).
- stevieB, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14Digg killed the site, here's all you need to know:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AhVWJgIzftE - eridius, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10Apparently, yes.
Arrow up/down controls volume normally. If you hold shift, it'll shove volume past the "max". - HaltingPoint, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11It was quick to get to the front page, but is there a reason submitter couldn't have just said "hold shift and click the volume control" in the blurb? Oh wait...ad revenue...
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9You're using the wrong output plug-in for Winamp.
Use DirectSound instead of waveOut. - ray901, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Nigel Tufnel: [pointing to a customized Marshall amplifier head unit] This is a top, to, uh, you know, what we use on stage, but it's very, very special, because, if you can see...
Marty DiBergi: Yeah...
Nigel Tufnel: [pointing to the control dials] ...the numbers all go to eleven. Look, right across the board: eleven, eleven, eleven, eleven...
Marty DiBergi: Oh, I see. And most amps go up to ten?
Nigel Tufnel: Exactly.
Marty DiBergi: Does that mean it's louder? Is that any louder?
Nigel Tufnel: Well, it's one louder, isn't it? It's not ten. You see, most... most blokes, you know, will be playing at ten. You're on ten here, all the way up, all the way up, all the way up... you're on ten on your guitar. Where can you go from there? Where?
Marty DiBergi: I don't know...
Nigel Tufnel: ...nowhere! Exactly! What we do is if we need that extra... push over the cliff, you know what we do?
Marty DiBergi: Put it up to eleven.
Nigel Tufnel: ...Eleven. Exactly. One louder.
Marty DiBergi: Why don't you just make ten louder, and make ten be the top... number, and make that a little louder?
Nigel Tufnel: [pause, blank look and snapping chewing gum] These go to eleven. - PhireN, on 10/12/2007, -5/+12Wow, That was fast, less than 5 min on the front page by my count.
Helps if the link is clickable like this: http://duggmirror.com - virtualball, on 10/12/2007, -5/+10Cool! But there is a better way for Mac users with a Mighty mouse or trackpad, do the two-finger scroll to the left next to the volume bar on a quicktime window, it will goto like +1000 percent! Tell me if you need more clear instructions!
- ByteGuerilla, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4This also works in the Windows XP QuickTime application.
- reiggin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5I thought this was general knowledge. I know I've been using it since System 7 days. Always useful.
- sakabako, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4VLC Fanboys, please stop.
Quicktime has some advantages over VLC and VLC has some advantages over Quicktime. If you don't believe me try to pause the movie, change the volume or use any other control in a fullscreen movie with a wireless mouse while the keyboard is out of reach. - Qazzian, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Don't forget to change the 'i' to a 'u'
- friday06, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3because it's not "supposed" to be used, and if they put it easer, deaf people will start suing them for damaging their hearing capacity, also, if you have a normally loud video, and "loud it up" even more than 100% then you could potentially damage the speakers
- fcuk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Is there a way to boost the volume in the stand-alone OS X client as well? Not just when files are embedded?
- Hulka, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6But couldn't they have just made 10 louder? ;-)
- cpcouvillion, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5@HaltingPoint
The same reason the commercials for the local news say: "Will it get colder tomorrow? Find out at 10." instead of just saying: "It's going to be colder tomorrow." - tobtoh, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3@HaltingPoint
I don't think you can really criticise the submitters motive on this. From the duggmirror stats, It took over 10 hours to get to the front page (so it wasn't quick) and ad revenue? There is one discrete and small Google adword on the blog. Compared to the majority of links on Digg, profit hardly seems a motive on this blog. - Xentrion, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Control - L?
- freff, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Thanks for the advice. :)
- eridius, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1QuickTime plugin instance.
As I just said above, to do this in the player you hold shift and press the up arrow - it'll increase volume even when slider is at max.
If volume is above max, hitting either up or down arrow (without shift) will instantly bring it back to max. So that's a quick way to fix the volume if you set it too high and a loud part comes on. - axonal, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Is it me, or am I the only one unable to get this volume trick to work? I wasn't able to load the site or diggmirror, but is this in QuickTime Player, or in a QuickTime plugin instance?
- abadbronc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1^^^That worked for me. Thanks eridius.
Wow that got loud, I think I woke up my wife. Maybe I should have turned off the sub first. - piratebill, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1People still use quick time player? Quick time alternative FTW!
- filmtex, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1BTW-properly recorded/engineered/compressed audio and video will ALWAYS have the appropriate volume in QuickTIme. This hint is great for those "other" times when your watching/listening to -uh- less than stellar- recordings.
- pixelperfect, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1yes.. Except if someone's browser doesn't send the "referrer". So it is safer to just add the word 'mirror' after http://www.digg in your address bar.
- friday06, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1you can use the preamp slider in the equalizers
- Karmavs, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1because it isn't max - its past max - and will compress the audio... its the same as if you use the equaliser and push all the bars to the top...
- buknaykid, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Yes, separate knob. Why separate knob?! Why separate knob?!
- virtualball, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4You probably two-finger scrolled to the right, do it to the leftt ;)
And VLC only goes to 400% :) - McNamron, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yes, this has been around since I watched QuickTime videos on my Macintosh Classic II in black-and-white. It's like one of those tricks you read about in the System 7 Book, now with coverage of System 7.0.1! ;-)
- Eugenia, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Thank God for this tip! QuickTime is really low volumed on my Mac and my PC even with its volume at 100% and my system's volume pretty high up. I was never happy with it, but it's nice to know that there is a way to fix this.
- tbikkle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Is there something like this for iTunes? I use the Soundcheck feature to normalize volume, but everything gets normalized to a level that’s much lower than the rest of the computer sounds, so you have to turn the speakers way up, but then all computer sounds and other media players are WAY loud.
- subtle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1WMP = WiMP
Just kidding, had to be said though ... - madinga, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Does WMP (windows media player) have such a trick up its sleeve? I often find the damn thing too soft
- admirabumblebee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1WMV does not work in VLC on mac.
- virtualball, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Lol wmv works in VLC :)
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1wordpress sucks!! They haven't still learnt to rise up against digg effect
- ByteGuerilla, on 10/12/2007, -6/+6"But couldn't they have just made 10 louder? ;-)"
... these go to 11. - alej744, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1It's just one small bug you moron.
And I don't really experience it, QuickTime sounds fine to me. - ewancoo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0was browsing on metacafe and found this video about this quicktime secret.
http://www.metacafe.com/watch/447167/secret_volume_control_in_quicktime/ - technique, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I want to know how to enable looping w/o buying the pro version!
- georgemoore13, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1admirabumblebee,
they added wmv support in the newest version.
It works - cxhamilton, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2"Even better: use VLC player"
Easy enough, oh, unless you want to watch a Windows Media Video (WMV). Windows Media Components (f/k/a Flip4Mac) is a Quicktime-only plugin. - collywolly, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3Hang on a minute, if "Apple stuff is so intuitive", then why is something like turning the volume up to max hidden away as a secret commnd????
Am I going to get dugg down for dispelling the Apple myth...? -
