  • kypen, on 10/12/2007, -6/+45Would that really be so horrible for a 5 second or so video to play while it loads all of it's necessary stuff? Game systems have been doing it for years and it is a hell of a lot better than a cheesy POST screen telling you how much graphics memory you have.

    i know im going to have fun when that thing startups.. more so that all the (my) other consoles, the dreamcast comes a close second thou.

  • moofer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4uh... it'll supposedly play everything in your iTunes library. I have lots of videos in my library that weren't purchased through the iTunes store. It'll play any mp4 and H.264 HD encoded video.

  • jagtar, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4xbox 1 does all this once modded and it functions great!....it uses the xbmc xbox360 interface, been using it to stream my podcasts (from rss and stored on my HDD) my movies, music and so on..
    but ofcourse apple had to add some features to make it worth buying, which i like---the thing when another mac comes near etc.

  • cjvino, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Well if it works with any video that's in your iTunes library then just use a product like iSquint to convert your .AVIs and .WMVs into .MP4 then import them into iTunes.

    I had plenty of .AVIs, .FLVs etc. that I converted to .MP4 for my Video iPod and they work great. Apple TV seems like it's just a Video iPod that uses your TV for a screen so it I'm hoping it works the same way.

  • sych0, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3How often do we see the tivo animation? Only when the unit reboots (plus you can skip it). I'd assume (read: hope) Apple Tv uses a similar standby mode to turn it "on" and "off" while actually being on the whole time

  • mlavergn, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3Agree with idean, at $149 that would be a good price. I think $300 is really stretching it (a fully portable video iPod is only $250) BUT if it's a real mini-computer under the hood (it has an Intel Pentium M) and if it's capable of being "unconstrained" to run OSX and/or Linux then it would be worth it for the hack factor. I'm waiting for someone to crack the case and post a snapshot of what's inside before I make up my mind. As an iTunes extender it's probably not worth it ... but as a sub-mini x86 very interesting!

    You're paying for the UI, it's not easy being simple. It is still more money than it should be, but $100 is too little, $149.99 would have been perfect.
