If you have less filespace you can use an application called Handbrake to accomplish this, for ripping my dvd's I usually use a combo of app's such as
MacTheRipper
DVDbackup
DVD2OneX
Popcorn
Handbrake
and Toast.
But...I can still watch a whole movie and maybe a whole and a half on my iBook anyways. - thelastknowngod, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i think HP has some software that comes preinstalled on all notebooks now. when you put in a dvd in full screen it hibernates the os in the background so the only thing needed to be powered is the dvd playback. i think you get something like 8 hours if youre doing nothing but watching dvds.

- SuperFarStucker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0An X40 can do about 5 hours playing SNES emulators. I do it every time I travel to Hawaii (about a 6 hr flight). I just laugh at the people who have notebooks so big you could land a ***** 737 on them trying to watch movies. I imagine I could easily do a full length film from the optical drive but I would have to put it in the dock.

Sorry, no universal binary. - KaosX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Its not locked. Im sitting on a up-to date OSX Server (tiger) and it works fine, my laptop with up-to-date everything (tiger) encounters no issues either, if it was still Handbrake FTW.

Actually it looks like it back up in a slightly uglier configuration.
I think the article was saying that OS X disabled the ability to copy a DVD to your hard drive using the Disk Utility. I know some people said it stopped working when they went to 10.4. The article shows you how to use DVD player to open the files once they are copied to your drive. - hiro, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0There have been loads of programs to do this in Windows for years, surely they aren't just coming to Mac now?
Have to say, my iBook has no problem playing an entire DVD on one charge though and I don't actually bother to do this (though that is due mainly to the fact that I can't find anything else I can delete to make space on the hard drive) - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I can still do it in OSX 10.4.5 ... Watch the movies at night when there wasn't anything better to do (other than watch candles burn down). Take the laptops to work during the day to recharge and swap out movies.
This year I'm trying to find a cheap LCD DVD/TV player that I can hookup to some deep discharge truck batteries (& inverter if needed). A light, a fan and some entertainment and I'm ready for hurricane season. - tboutcher, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0its called centrino 8?)
- SaintStryfe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0thelastknowngod: THe thing your thinking of is Media Player - HP, Toshiba and I believe Sony all have it. It's basic concept is it's a stripped out "OS" that's nothing but a media reader - MP3 CDs, Music CDs and DVDs. IT does work great - it uses a lot less juice then the full thing. However, it does require a re-boot, and you can't do anything but watch the movie (Though given the parameters, that's not an issue).

- SaintStryfe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0PErsonally, I use MacTheRipper for getting Data off, and Toast 6 to burn it. Toast is slow but it does a good job and is very easy to set up. It's about 4 clicks to burn a DVD from VIDEO_TS files. MactheRipper is pretty fast. I use VLC to play DVDs (even above apple's DVD player) and VIDEO_TS files.

Jesus I'm getting tired of (some) Diggers nitpicking every frickkin thing they see. You thought it was old, then move on, get a life, whatever.
