- scooterbaga, on 06/12/2009, -15/+116I wonder how many of them are just like me... Hit the update button, restart, continue using firefox.
- SpongeBad, on 06/12/2009, -20/+118Considering that Safari for Windows is piggybacked on every install of iTunes, these download amounts are hardly surprising. The real question is how many people are USING it? I got sick of being asked about it by the Apple updater, so I let it download Safari a while back. I tried it a few times, but there's nothing compelling there to convince me to switch from FireFox.
Oh, and considering the OS X updater asks people to install Safari as well, shouldn't just about every actively used Mac have it by this point? - toe_head2001, on 06/13/2009, -14/+79Only because they pushed it through automatic updates.
- Nobiting, on 06/13/2009, -9/+61I only downloaded it because I'm a web developer. I commend Apple for releasing a browser that pushes web standards to such a high level. Hopefully that will force others to follow. *cough*Microsoft*cough*
Even if Safari isn't your favorite web browser, we'll all end up benefiting from it at some point. - rnawky, on 06/13/2009, -4/+46Perhaps the 11 million has something to do with the fact that iTunes tries to install it now when it updates.
- bpeacock22, on 06/13/2009, -3/+45I'm as much an Apple fanboy as the next guy, but this data is kinda misleading considering they are PUSHING the download on people. In similar fashion, I got the download, but I don't use Safari. Like a lot people, I'm a Firefox guy. So 11 million really doesn't have much meaning if you take all that into consideration.

Adblock:

Any other questions? - mbulmer, on 06/13/2009, -4/+30That'd be great if Safari Adblock worked on Windows.
- OneOfNone, on 06/13/2009, -3/+23Let's also point out that Microsoft isn't bragging about the number of IE8 downloads (via automatic update).
Did we just see an occasion when Microsoft had some class, and Apple didn't? - ioncelovedjane, on 06/12/2009, -43/+58Eat that IE!
- inactive, on 06/13/2009, -4/+19people got upset when windows update tried to make them upgrade ie....but i'm really tired of apple trying to make me download 80mb worth of itunes, 50mb worth of safari and 30mb worth of quicktime every couple of weeks. seriously use a patch, i don't want to reinstall the whole thing every time the iphone gets ringtone or cut/paste support.
- m4rty, on 06/13/2009, -6/+20i stupidly didn't uncheck the "download safari" box when i was told i needed to update my iTunes software. i never used nor plan on using Safari 4, so you can minus one of the 11 million +.
- jake8689, on 06/13/2009, -1/+15this is gonna seem like a silly question but how do browsers make money, or is its purpose more like a pissing contest.
- tolbs, on 06/13/2009, -1/+13The Mozilla Foundation makes a good bit of money - a good portion of it coming from making Google it's default search provider.
Think about Internet Explorer, whats the default homepage? MSN.com (ad revenue).
Chrome? It's part of the google experience (Gmail, Youtube, Maps, Search all of which make google money via adsense). - goeric, on 06/12/2009, -9/+21I really like Safari 4 but I won't use it on Windows. I <3 my adblock plus.
- diemunkiesdie, on 06/13/2009, -5/+16I guess, unlike those 11 million people, I am the only one who had no idea that Apple even released Safari 4.
- whatit, on 06/13/2009, -0/+11I suppose Apple doesn't install Safari automatically on their computers either?
I'm not a fan of anything but honestly, quit yer complainin' - lianculta, on 06/13/2009, -3/+13I got an update notice when I launched iTunes the other day. I don't even use Safari but updated anyways. Those numbers are far from impressive.
- alexllanio, on 06/13/2009, -3/+13Hmmm Safari 4 is still freezing one me, and not just one window, the entire browser.
- tonychenyj, on 06/13/2009, -5/+14Download it doesn't mean to use it a lot. I only use Safari for web site compatibility validation only.
- AngelBunny, on 06/13/2009, -2/+11wow thanks for the adblock link. It works better than adblock plus in firefox. :)
- Whitebeard, on 06/13/2009, -1/+9My parents downloaded Safari on their Windows because of iTunes. I guess they forgot to un-check the box on the Apple Software Update.
- ShuttleXpC, on 06/13/2009, -4/+12Its hilarious, cause Apple was the first one to actually PUSH this software on you, yet MS gets all the heat. Back about 1 year ago, Apple started telling people Safari was an essential download on their Apple Software Update. I just love how ass backwards people are that they don't realize Apple does the exact same ***** with the same ***** software that has the same ***** loopholes.
- inkswamp, on 06/13/2009, -9/+17Firefox is a good browser, but its Javascript speeds suck ass, worse than IE. I was working on a project recently that required some fairly complex movement of very large, complicated page elements, and once you get to a certain point, FF just falls down badly, can't render that kind of thing for crap. Elements stutter along and the processing slows to a crawl. The browser itself is great, but the JS engine needs a lot of help. IE is so-so in that regard but Safari is amazing--doesn't miss a beat even with demanding uses like that.
So, depending on what angle you're viewing it from, Safari can be better than FF. - MtheoryX, on 06/13/2009, -12/+20Safari adblock:
http://burgersoftware.com/en/safariadblock
The more you know. - unusualbob, on 06/13/2009, -3/+11Just some simple math here, but if there were 6 million Windows version downloads does that mean there were less downloads of Safari for Mac than PC? That's somewhat perplexing...
- inactive, on 06/13/2009, -4/+1195% because people are to stupid to uncheck it when downloading quicktime or itunes malware. nobody actually uses it. or even know its on their system. bonjour anyone?
- chongli, on 06/13/2009, -8/+15It says right there in the summary (as well as the article) that 6 million of those downloads were of the Windows version.
- AngelBunny, on 06/13/2009, -1/+7if they get http://burgersoftware.com/en/safariadblock working on windows then I highly recommend you try it. imho it is better than adblock plus.
- wastern, on 06/13/2009, -0/+6I know Firefox gets a cut of the google ad revenue whenever someone does a search through the google search box. I can only assume Safari does the same.
Though with Safari and IE they are part of bigger packages, OS X and Windows. With Safari on Windows I think its more to grow the user base to get better support across the web to get web developers to actually test their pages in all browsers
And yes, also a pissing contest. But that doesn't seem the motivation for IE since it constantly comes in a distant last. IE is more about control, but that is being lost with the rise of Firefox and other browsers making the web move to standards - danielburrowes, on 06/13/2009, -2/+8This claim to fame is bull. The only way they can get such now is through forced updates on everyone that owns a mac. But I bet that majority of those users use firefox or other alternatives.
- amasiancrasian, on 06/13/2009, -3/+9There's actually no more need for Inquisitor as live searching is now built-in with Safari 4.
- Mejogid, on 06/13/2009, -0/+5I would imagine it's quite a radical change for only a few pixels benefit, that makes dragging tabs a lot less discoverable. Tabs on top is fine but really just an aesthetic choice, tabs in the title bar I find just gets in the way and requires excessive precision for tab movement.
- defectDS, on 06/13/2009, -0/+5"people got upset when windows update tried to make them upgrade ie"
Who the hell is that? I'm pretty sure everyone, web developers especially, would be delighted to hear that people are upgrading to IE8 (as opposed to sticking with 6 or 7). - kelly, on 06/13/2009, -2/+7Ya cuz safari's default page doesn't use google.
Oh wait.... - itsbob, on 06/13/2009, -2/+7Only pushes auto-updates if you use it or have it installed
- PsychoPNut, on 06/13/2009, -3/+8you say eat that ie?
if you count it like that, millions of people have ie. - MacBandit, on 06/13/2009, -1/+6Inquisitor gives you search results in a drop down menu not just suggested search terms.
I prefer to use Glims which does the same thing and more. - wonko33, on 06/13/2009, -0/+4the search tool, is one way they make money
- falafelkiosken, on 06/13/2009, -7/+11...as opposed to the web browser that is pre-installed in 90% of all home computers
- AndersLund, on 06/13/2009, -0/+4But extra software (if you didn't have Safari installed) should not be an opt-out thing - and that is what Apple do - push extra software onto your computer.
Sure, "You have the power", but normal users are tough to install updates to be secure, so they install it and guess what - they are less secure, because they now have some extra software installed. And sometimes "super users" get it installed, because they also just install all the updates and fail to see that it also adds new software.
Apple is scum, when it comes to things like this - just like their commercials. - Bainemo, on 06/13/2009, -5/+9My guess would be that 6 million PC users are too stupid to uncheck it when they install iTunes, whereas 5 million mac users are SMART enough to upgrade their browser.
- Plonkely, on 06/13/2009, -1/+5You shouldn't really have to download a search addon to add your own search providers - the ability to set up your own searches in a useful manner should be something that comes standard with every browser. I'm able to set up my own searches with keywords in every other modern browser, even IE6 with some registry editing! Apparently Apple were too busy making things pretty to add basic functionality like this. And I don't think Inquisitor works with Windows' Safari - correct me if I'm wrong!
Saying that, the adblock one was quite smashing last time I tried it. - kinseyincanada, on 06/13/2009, -4/+8why the ***** did they move the tabs back to the bottom! i loved the tabs on top.
- AndersLund, on 06/13/2009, -1/+5Just until Apple push it out as another important update, when you update iTunes... back again and Apple can once again count it as a download.
- AngelBunny, on 06/13/2009, -3/+7firefox is good because of its plugins and usability from that like all open source programs are. however, safari is an easy runner up. sure, it doesn't have the plugin database but it is faster, stabler, less of a memory hog, and so on. however, chrome is basically the same and imho choosing between the two is hard.
- Metalcard, on 06/13/2009, -2/+6Pretty much. That's why such numbers are pretty meaningless.
- pmc64, on 06/13/2009, -1/+5It'll be a 64 bit version of safari. I dunno where people will get a 64 bit version of flash though.
- chongli, on 06/13/2009, -1/+5I use Privoxy. Run it on a server, all of my machines connect to it both on Windows and Mac. They all share the same settings.
- MyNameIsJoe, on 06/12/2009, -9/+13I like my tabs on top so I'm sticking with the Beta.
