- trghpy, on 10/10/2007, -6/+43In soviet Russia, you use the hand held device to terminal into your PC at home.
Wait... that makes too much sense. - Chewie67, on 10/10/2007, -0/+36Wouldn't the reverse be more desirable? To connect to your Mac using your iPhone?
- johnsee, on 10/10/2007, -4/+36Maddox is gonna be pissed
- krackle, on 10/10/2007, -1/+16It would, but first you need to be able to start installing things and modifying software on the iPhone. That's why being able to ssh to your iPhone is a good thing.
- chuck7, on 10/10/2007, -1/+13You can SSH directly to their face
- cloudyprison, on 10/10/2007, -1/+12Fixed:
In soviet russia, hand held uses you to terminal into your PC at home. - ers35, on 10/10/2007, -2/+8No.
- rblinne, on 10/10/2007, -2/+7Make damn sure you do the last step, change the root password. I can see some hacker trolling for hacked iPhones and ssh to root with the default password. AT&T better block port 22 on their EDGE network or else we may get DOS attacks on our phones looking for the hacked phones. Has anyone tried this and see if you can ssh to an iPhone from EDGE? I'm not about to make an iBrick out of my phone to try.
- Queue29, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5We could filter the letter 'i'.
- KennMac, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4No, your phone does not run a SSHD. You can SSH FROM your phone. RTFA.
- plagiats, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4it's not that I am missing the humor of your comment or something, but taking control of a nokia e70 from a PC is possible. You can even export the display of the phone (via VNC): http://m-shell.net/Products-mShellFree.aspx
- MariusVW, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4Not really. The majority of people using it will never need this, and to limit the number of apps, Apple can make what it has better by fixing all problems etc. Kinda like with their Mac OS X not running on any PC... eliminates driver hell. (Keep in mind XP is a solid OS, but is unstable due to 3rd party crappy drivers mostly)
- MariusVW, on 10/10/2007, -2/+5Because you can now use the iPhone to connect to the internet using SSH tunneling, and make free calls using your laptop using Skype!
But you obviously just said that to belittle the iPhone, right? - drlha, on 10/10/2007, -2/+5Yes its OS X. Its just OS X built on an ARM CPU instead of an Intel or PPC. Just because you can't run existing Mac binaries on it doesn't make it not OS X.
- MacParrot, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3I agree with your Bush analogy and I agree that an all Apple lovefest on digg would be infinitely worse than what we have now.
On Apple being the number 1 DRM pusher I respectfully disagree. Whether or not DRM is put onto content as sold by Apple (and every other content seller) is entirely up to the content providers ( With the exception of many independant artists that have requested no DRM for their content. Hopefully Apple will FINALLY accomodate them). Slave labor? Most tech companies employ the same companies to make the gear, so I hardly see why you would point out Apple (they should all be ashamed and make changes BEFORE it's disclosed in the press). The price of an item is determined by what people will pay for it, not what it costs to make it. If we (as Mac users) are willing to pay a higher price for their equipment, then why should you care? - BenBenMan, on 10/10/2007, -5/+8And this helps me call people... how?
- Ravatar, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Pretty sure this is for remoting INTO your iPhone, not a remote PC tunneling your skype traffic. I fail to see how this applies to your situation.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2http://digg.com/tech_news/Cisco_announces_cause_of_Duke_iPhone_issue
- GusCrown, on 10/10/2007, -4/+6Has the iPhone been unlocked for other carriers yet?
- zodieman, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3I wish they'd leave the funky stuff till AFTER they manage to unlock the phone. I'm tired of seeing small tidbits about how they have Wolfenstein playing on it, SSH working, electric share attachments etc... GIVE US AN UNLOCKED iPhone so us outside the bloody US can have a decent phone once and for all.
/Tired of my Razr
//hate CrackBerries - thedreaming1, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3Is it just me or is everything that apple makes hackable? The ipod, iphone, Apple TV, they've all been hacked and made to do really cool things. Is this on purpose, is apple making devices that are hackable on purpose?
- cgruber, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2I sold my 8125 for an iphone. True on paper the iphone does less than a 8125 with the right apps. HOWEVER what the iphone does is so much better than the 8125 it more than makes up for it. I even upgraded mine to WM6 and it still sucks ass.
- KennMac, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Everything you need for this is here: http://iphone.natetrue.com/
Uploaded right from #iphone-shell by NerveGas last night. - jjed824, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Yes, I would mind digging your article.
- WiseWeasel, on 10/10/2007, -8/+10This is great news! Now that SSH is running, with remote filesystem access, this opens the floodgates for all kinds of cool hacks. C'mon, Apple, ship me my iPhone already!
- simonwalton, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2It would be great to get ScummVM running on the iPhone.
- h3xley, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3This is an sshd server, not a client. Unless your "other smartphones" run unix underneath i can't possibly see how they could utilize or implement sshd.
- bjnord, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Not "any iPhone", but "any iPhone that someone installed the NerveGas SSH on, and then didn't change the root password". A much smaller subset. :-) See rblinne's comment below.
- Ravatar, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Does it really matter? Didn't think so.
- samsoffes, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2i did it. it works
- colincornaby, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1But what other phone runs UNIX and has a full UNIX shell onboard?
- KennMac, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1All devices are hackable with enough will-power.
I sound like Tony Robbins. - Ravatar, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1These "really cool things" should be fully possible without the interference of Apple. If anything, they've hindered the innovation.
- S1L3NTC, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1blogspam-esque
Buried for blogspamming and trying to sound smart when you're not. - kolywater, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1your name is pretty accurate, twatwaffle.
- KennMac, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1The iPhone's "EDGE" IP is a LAN address. AT&T would have to setup a NAT to allow incoming traffic to your phone, which they have absolutely no reason to do so.
- MariusVW, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2No you can already do that, silly! :)
The trick is now that you can use your iPhone to SSH tunnel a connection from your PC using Skype and make unlimited number of national phone calls (If, like me, you have the right Skype packages) - Ravatar, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1All I read was, "Apple can control whether you can use services which directly compete with their offerings"
- laelfrog, on 10/10/2007, -2/+3but this is a big step forward in that pursuit!
- madmage, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1http://code.google.com/p/telekinesis/
With that, you can control your Mac via Gui, Apple Scripts, and soon Terminal as well. Oh, and if your at a wifi hotspot you can stream audio from your iTunes library as well. - somegeologist, on 10/10/2007, -2/+3"How do I ssh from my Mac? Look up the IP address under your WiFi settings (click the blue right arrow next to the WiFi network you choose). Then from the Mac's terminal, enter ssh root@IP address and use dottie as your password."
Does this mean anyone can do this to any iPhone, free shells for the taking? - S1L3NTC, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I'm telling you. It's KAISER SOZE!!!
- notcarsondaly, on 10/10/2007, -3/+3Um, the Zaurus could and can (in Japan since they stopped selling them in the U.S. years ago) do all of that out of the box. I had one of the SL-5500 Collie models. It was great. Took many years of abuse. I was able to install ARM versions of Apache and MySQL to show off web apps to clients. Great open source tool and PDA.
Is the iPhone's OS X really OS X if you can't use the great Unix tools OS X includes on the Mac? - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1QQ
- trghpy, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1I own an Italian domain and live in California, and have never once set foot in Italy.
Go Fig. - airquotes, on 10/10/2007, -13/+13These threads would be a lot better if the Mac/iPhone haters just stayed out if they werent interested. Too many detractors feeling a need to express their opinions. Dont they know they are falling right into the hands of apple by creating a buzz?
- cloudyprison, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1In soviet russia, shinynew has already ended!
- SpacemanSpiff01, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1poop
- LastDitchHero, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0Yea like the same way the Xbox was made hackable.....
- neozeed, on 10/10/2007, -2/+2cool! with any luck I can get bsdgames & simh up and running! Heck, maybe even apache 1.3!
