- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -2/+23Bose does not offer "high fidelity" sound in comparison to nearly all of its competition. Bose drivers are muddy, lows are undefined and highs just don't exist. Also, if "headroom" is something important to you, you'll blow a Bose coil trying to find it faster than you'll blow a Cerwin Vega paper cone.
- benkula, on 10/10/2007, -2/+17I've seen these at Target on clearance for half price. Still too expensive for my tastes!
- D4r7h3v1l, on 10/10/2007, -4/+19Hmmm... digg must be broken. I thought "Rumor:*" was supposed to be automatically changed to "Confirmed!:*"
- ronmexico, on 10/10/2007, -1/+12I know one person who owns one and they sound amazing. Can't justify the price though.
- TheSaladMan, on 10/10/2007, -1/+11Isn't it just a speaker with an iPod dock on it?
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -2/+11No Highs - No Lows - Must be Bose
- StrikerObi, on 10/10/2007, -1/+10It is just a speaker dock, yes, but it is a really really good one. Go to an Apple store and try one out. It blows the other speaker docks out of the water. The sound is really rich, and it gets louder than hell. I've always wanted one, but I have no real need for an iPod speaker dock (I use my Airport Express and Airtunes with my stereo for my music), and the Hi-Fi is very expensive.
- mastercheif, on 10/10/2007, -1/+9Bose
Buy Other Sound Equipment. - n8r0n, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8Bose - Better sound through marketing.
When will people learn that there are much better alternatives out there.
Personally I am a Yamaha fan. - eizzumdm, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8iPod HiFi is strange, but not much can top the WTF strangeness of Apple's iPod socks
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6And a big-ass battery compartment!
- _loopy_, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7You know the saying. No highs No lows Must be Bose!
- jlatka, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6Would have been great if they had just included a built-in AirTunes receiver. so one could stream iTunes music to it, without the iPod. Seems like a no-brainer to separate it from the Bose sounddock and other competitors.
- cgruber, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6Expensive but they sound great
- HappyScrappy, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Agreed the Hi Fi is LOUD as hell.
It sounds pretty good too, but the defining characteristic has to be its volume.
I was at an outdoor party with almost 300 people and someone had put music on (good thing ASCAP didn't catch us!) and after listening for 15 minutes I looked over to see where the music was coming from, expecting to see at least a wedding DJ-sized setup and there was just an iPod in a Hi Fi, blasting out the tunes. Rather impressive.
It was still too expensive for my tastes though, I didn't need an ersatz PA and so I didn't see any point in paying for one. - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Actually, if you go grab a sound blaster x-fi the same ***** MP3 WILL sound a great deal better on your computer! The 24-bit crystalizer really make a big difference.
- thehigherlife, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Bowers & Wilkins speakers FTW!
- InsaneMachine, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5It sounds like ***** if you download them from itunes, or if they are a crappy quality. The music won't sound any worse than on your computer. If you have a high enough bitrate it will sound just fine. Also here is a secret: Even if it is called an MP3 Player doesn't mean it solely plays MP3s
- Ozzsanity, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4I have the Hi FI and it is excellent. I also have the Klipsch iPod speaker and it blows the Bose away. The Hi Fi is LOUD. I find I use the Klipsch more.
- DaffyDuck, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Too bad it is made by Creative, the king of late drivers.
- uptown, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3The Klipsch speakers are the best I've heard as far as the ipod sets go...
- cctoronto05, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3I want one... I think it sounds waaaay better than the other units available... I'd like one in black though... it is perfect for taking outside... it runs on batteries if need be!
Go to the store and compare it to the others... you'll find there is no comparison.
If they discontinue it, I'll have to buy one sooner rather than later (I was going to buy one next spring). - DanGleesacks, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3If they mabe released one in Black?
I feel very obsolete from most of the "official" apple range of goods, as they make the black iPod, yet don't decide to release any black accessories, e.g. HiFi's, Docks... jeebus.. not even offical Black iPod headphones!
Sort it apple! - LaughingMan11, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3There's no reason why you can't put CD quality WAV or Apple Lossless codec files onto your iPod to avoid the "sub-CD audio files."
No one is forcing you to use MP3 or AAC. - mabhatter, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2the trouble with the Hi-Fi is that it doesn't do enough. It's "only" iPod speakers and not much more. I'd love one for my living room as it's quite small, Hi-Fi is perfect, but lacks inputs for more than 1 item at a time. If they update that thing, perhaps add AirTunes from the Airport express, they will have something cool. It's the perfect "dorm room" match to Apple TV, iMac, and iPod, but there's no inclusion for setting along side a TV set and DVD player or Video game system. It needs more inputs, in different types.. analog, digital coax, optical... Then it needs to secure the iPod MUCH better, so that the iPod in dock is portable.. in the present incarnation it just hangs off the top, very nice for looks, but you can't carry it that way.
It was an "almost" product, that needs more features to be interesting. - Lou3000, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Actually, for high end sound, Bose is terrible. But for MP3's, I've always liked it. The muddy lows seem to create more atmosphere in the sound. I can't stand sennheiser's with MP3s. The sound is so crisp that it comes out sounding way too digital.
Just my opinion. - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3Of course the sound is good, but the unit is also far bigger than ANY other dock, and far more expensive.
- adml_shake, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2256k Is your friend
- shieldss, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2The HiFi needs to become the WiFi. How great would it be to have that form factor without the need for an iPod? Stream your iTunes library, display library contents on a small screen and allow navigation with the remote. Just plug it in and it is ready to go. Make it like the Apple TV but for music.
- super_spyder, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2the airport express as a whole is under promoted. it is so versatile. it can work as an eithernet bridge to add wireless to a device with only ethernet, its a print server, its a itunes audio extender with both analog and optical out. and its a travel wireless router, or a wireless access point all about the same size as a standard apple power supply. i hope they update it to have 802.11n, and hard drive support eventually.
- super_spyder, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2i agree that they are odd, but they work so well. my girlfriend has used them for all ipod versions that she has owned, for her iphone, and her motorola razr, as well as keeping her small makeup things together. the things stretch so huge anything fits in them.
- sam10685, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Maybe I'll be able to get one for less than 350 soon. Would like to have one but 350 is way too much.
- Lou3000, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Agreed, I've never found a need for a iPod stereo dock. Airtunes is the best thing that Apple has ever created, but for some reason it is so under promoted with the Airport Express.
- hdtv3, on 10/10/2007, -5/+7I thought they canned this a few months after releasing it? I don't know anyone who owns one.
- cyssero, on 04/18/2009, -0/+2I just don't understand all the BOSE hate. I'm no audiophile, but their systems sound fine to me.. maybe a bit pricey, but there's plenty of over-priced crap in the market by pretty much all the big manufacturers.
- Codee, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I love Apple but always hated that thing. It was doofy.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2Really? I have Bose Monsoon in my Passat, and most people think it's an aftermarket deck. Great bass and highs across 9 speakers...
- cyssero, on 04/18/2009, -0/+1I work at a big retail chain in Australia, and I can't tell you how hard it was to sell the iPod Hi-Fi. We only ever sold one, and it wasn't far from invoice price. I feel bad for the sucker who splashed out that much on such a device.. probably one of the most useless official iPod accessories, up there with socks and tubes.
- perlogik, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I remember a while ago Target phased them out and sold them for around $150 (only in stores)
- Narfmaster, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1We well quite a lot of them where I work, it's either that or the mediocre and overpriced piece of kit that is the Bose SoundDock for the "high end" iPod audio.
I have noticed a drop in the amount which we get shipped in though. Out of stock a lot of the time.
I for one think it's a great bit of kit except for the price, £229 equivalent of $460 in the UK. Blech At least I get to pump out music hilariously loud from the demo hifi to pass the time. - htdub, on 10/10/2007, -2/+3They should have combined it with the Apple Express.
- SadMartigan, on 11/25/2008, -0/+1If I had any audio on my iPod that wasn't a podcast or a low-quality drm'ed 128kbps file, I could have justified the HiFi, but alas...
- Reno582, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2well of course, it was a 300 dollar boombox without a radio or a CD player, too much for no features.
at least my 100 dollar iHome had a radio and a alarm clock... - lintmonkey, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1"the things stretch so huge anything fits in them."
What about feet? - adml_shake, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I noticed that too, and it wasn't even that long after they came out. My Target hasn't carried any for a long time. One of my friends that works at Best Buy says that they've only sold 5 of them that he knows of. They still have some of the original (ones that came in after they were put on sale) boxes back in the warehouse.
- ih8apple, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I dont think this was there bigest blunder:
$99 cases that you had to take the iPod out of to see, anyone? - sonictonic, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I love my iPod Hi-Fi and use it daily. I think it looks cool, and it not only sounds great but is perfect in my 1 bedroom apartment. I looked at the Bose speaker dock and some others, but I truly liked this one the best.
- Trioxin, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I would get one if they built AirTunes in. Its a feature that would really set it apart.
- evelian, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1iPod socks are wonderful! I use them for my phone and camera as well. There are times when cases can be annoying, so the socks are a great alternative. I thought the price was ridiculous when my girlfriend first bought them, but we've both used them so much, they're easily worth the price.
- paulgibson, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I have one too and I love it
