"Sad to see some people still defending Apple after a clear invasion of privacy." - xTRUMANx
"If MS did this, there would be massive global uproar. Luckily apple only has a few teen fashionista users, who dont care about privacy." - DirtySnachez
"It's really hard to point out to blinded Apple loyalists that there's something invasive about the company doing this." - bluemist
"Sometimes I think if it was ever proved that apple directly funded terrorism, there would be people who would be like "Well it's Apple, they must have had a good reason". I know I am being extreme (for effect, don't believe that), but it seems like a weekly event that something bad about the iPhone comes out and anyone who speaks out against apple is dugg down into oblivion." - daizaru - ACityInOhio, on 11/20/2007, -8/+59Phew...we're all safe from unconstitutional invasions on our privacy. I feel a lot better now. I think I'm going to tell all my friends about how much better I feel by calling them through the exclusive network of the iPhone: AT&T.
- inactive, on 11/20/2007, -19/+65No surprise. It's rather easy to accuse Apple of evil things because the Microsoft fanboys are so eager to believe it. At least Microsoft earned the wrath of the public. I mean, they were actually convicted in open court of illegal behavior. Apple has earned the same amount wrath because people actually like their products. Go figure.
- rompom7, on 11/20/2007, -9/+54I just love how normal rumors get debunked, but Apple rumors get SMASHED.
- cleverboy, on 11/20/2007, -1/+36Logging everytime you use...? You realize that the request is what is returning the stock and weather information, right? You realize that the iPhone in your hand isn't just INVENTING this data from thin air? Right? --Wait, maybe you don't. Maybe you actually think the iPhone parses barometric pressure and the sweat of your palm to get these results. GRRRR... I hate people stuck in conspiracies.
- Pliep, on 11/20/2007, -2/+32Finally someone who paid attention. The story about widgets sending IMEI codes and using them for spying is STUPID and NONSENSICAL. AT&T already knows all IMEI codes. Besides, why would Apple use some silly widgets to do this? They could easily build spyware into the OS and send the info when you start up your phone.
http://www.google.com/translate?u=http%3A%2F%2Fpli ... - laterthandawn, on 11/20/2007, -3/+30Good call -- reasonable and well corroborated. You, my friend, are a gentleman and a scholar.
- laterthandawn, on 11/20/2007, -2/+29Your Christmas list. Straight to Santa.
God bless you, iPhone. - somerandomnerd, on 11/20/2007, -1/+25Yes. Every time you use an online application that has to connect to their servers, they LOG IT!
What next- assistants at Apple stores recording your credit card details every time you innocently buy something?
What a terrible breach of human rights. - PapaRaboon, on 11/20/2007, -1/+24Dude, reading your comments it's obvious you were implying that Apple were doing it. I understand that you dislike people openly defending Apple and call them fanboys but they won't defend Apple if sensationalists like you didn't attack Apple. What has Apple ever done to you other than make your computing life a little easier? and if you say "but I use Windows, not Mac" then I say, without Apple taking the leap of faith and starting the GUI revolution by being the first corporation to take the gamble on the GUI then you wouldn't have Windows. We would all still be using various CLI variations.
Bashing Apple and their fans is stupid and it's what we have had to put up with for years. The 90's was "Why don't you get a proper computer?" or "Isn't Apple going out of business?" this millennium we have to put with idiots like you calling us fanboys just because of our loyalties. Without Apple and the various Linux distros, MS would have little competition and wouldn't have improved their software ever.
Shoot yourself in the foot why don't you.
The real fanboys are those who fight tooth and nail to support Microsoft's monopoly. If they got their way we would have to put up with the dark ages of computing for years to come.
Get a life!!! - DigDugDigger, on 11/20/2007, -10/+32They acted on bad intelligence. Not the first time that's happened in history.
- cleverboy, on 11/20/2007, -1/+20All Gizmodo rumors are "SMASHED". It's what they do when they report inaccurate stories.
Here you go... see, there's this thing called "Google", all the cool kids are using it.
http://www.google.com/search?q=microsoft+smashed+s ... - LMControl, on 11/20/2007, -2/+20You know you've made it when all the haters try to bring you down with hoaxes and *****....
- cleverboy, on 11/20/2007, -4/+21Waaaaah. Then seek them out and digg them next time... bitch.
- boshaus, on 11/20/2007, -0/+16OMG!! Digg is logging my IP EVERY time I connect to the web page! Invasion of Privacy! Everyone quit going to digg! Stop going to web pages all together! This must me stopped!
- wellyuk, on 11/20/2007, -0/+16Netdroid, you do realise that every time you use ANY website, your IP address and the exact pages you visit are logged on probably every single website you visit. Is that an invasion of privacy?
- warragul, on 11/20/2007, -9/+24That sound you just heard was 10,000 Apple-haters biting their pillows.
O noes. - bertdevriese, on 11/20/2007, -2/+14rtfa
- Shakermaker, on 11/20/2007, -1/+12LOL - PWN3D!
- MacParrot, on 11/20/2007, -1/+10Why don't both of you get a clue and stop worrying about what other people prefer as an OS?
- rebotfc, on 11/20/2007, -6/+15You're right about the evidence but i'm still digging you down because you used that retarded term 'fanbois'.
- ravage86, on 11/20/2007, -2/+11Bush created bad intelligence, that's not an acceptable excuse for him.
- dhmlco, on 11/20/2007, -0/+9@kanablis, how about this one then? You can see the different IDs for yourself.
http://todd.dailey.info/archives/2007/11/19/the-ip ...
Or here, which also mentions that the IDs seem to be the same for all of the phones tested.
http://www.iSights.org/2007/11/iphone-phones-h.htm ... - MacParrot, on 11/20/2007, -1/+8You forgot your sarcasm tag, though something as stupid as this shouldn't really need it...unless you're serious in which case you frighten me enough to never respond to one of your posts again.
- blackmage439, on 11/20/2007, -0/+7Dugg for the Dr. Jobs and VaderPhone.
- laterthandawn, on 11/20/2007, -3/+10One alleged quiet invasion of privacy down, and only X left to go...
- MacParrot, on 11/20/2007, -3/+8As long as that's all you can say, we don't expect to hear much from you again.
- takamalak, on 11/20/2007, -1/+6Anyone have a tissue?
- laterthandawn, on 11/20/2007, -0/+5Like the kind on msnbc.com/foxnews.com/cnn.com/whateverelseyouhaveinmind.com?
Careful now...you're toying with the sleep of the dead. - Quix, on 11/20/2007, -1/+6"Me too, oh, and how corrections for sensationalist stories regarding Apple actually make it to the frontpage but ones for Microsoft and so on don't."
Obviously the Winbot Brigade isn't doing its job, estvir. You need to work harder on that (though I must commend you for all your efforts). - Spuy767, on 11/20/2007, -0/+5Don't forget USB. I, for one, am happy that I no longer have to reboot my computer to get a peripheral to function.
- bigsteve, on 11/20/2007, -0/+4Haha, NEWSFLASH...service must make request via the internet in order to retrieve data.
In other news, privacy may be invaded when you ask someone a question, since they have to hear it to answer. - Tippis, on 11/20/2007, -0/+4Sif! No making sense allowed!
...on the other hand, I run Linux, Windows and OS X, and hate them all equally, so I think *any* kind of preference is silly...
I want my ITS back :'-( - MacParrot, on 11/20/2007, -0/+4I agree with what you're saying but if you EVER make fun of the Commodore 64 OS it's gonna be ON!
- sholt, on 11/20/2007, -0/+3I suspect that every iPhone update will carry security updates with it, however, I don't suspect apple will release details on any exploits that do not have CVE numbers, or are otherwise widely publicly known.
I would like to see all companies more forthcoming in their security policies, however this is ultimately their perrogrative. And, in the case of that particular exploit, it was closed long ago. - Professr, on 11/20/2007, -0/+3Ssshh, they'll hear about your erectile dysfunction...
- yunus, on 11/20/2007, -1/+4It's not
- Tippis, on 11/20/2007, -3/+6The question is, then, if that image will change now that Apple is being taken to court for *their* monopolistic behaviour... O_o
- laaabaseball, on 11/20/2007, -1/+4you coulda just searched for rumor smashed site:gizmodo.com
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=rumor+smashed ...
There are inaccuracies in Apple articles too, not just Microsoft ones. Just because its a digg page all about Apple, you don't have to slam Microsoft. This f'in article has got to nothing to do with Microsoft.
I'm tired of all the Apple trolls who go after Microsoft and don't just relish in the goodness that is Apple. - hightower77, on 11/20/2007, -0/+2Who hoo! Apple will know that I wanted to see what the weather was like in Honolulu, HI at 3:35 central today. Maybe they will swoop down and take me to their secret concentration camp and make me break rocks.
- hightower77, on 11/20/2007, -0/+2Look out! They'll hear me call my parents to ask how my kid is while I'm at work. OMG, they'll hear me call my wife and ask if I need to pick anything up on the way home. They will know we need MILK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
- Flashman, on 11/20/2007, -0/+2Well said. We all know where the true threats to privacy lie. (Hello, NSA, you guys need any more Australian-based operatives?)
- MacParrot, on 11/20/2007, -2/+4While I'll be delighted to see Bush and Co leave DC in disgrace, when are the Democrats going to bring up some serious candidates... Oh crap, these ARE the serious candidates.
- cfulp, on 11/20/2007, -0/+2http://todd.dailey.info/archives/2007/11/19/the-ip ... To see the info yourself. On a side note, OSX's Calculator program goes to a similar website as the iphones, to give you updated currency. You, Aitese, are why we were tricked to goto war. So quick to judge, when you didn't have any proof to begin with.
- laaabaseball, on 11/20/2007, -0/+1it would be easier if you just googled it. IMEI wouldn't work as International Mobile Equipment Identity
- Audacitor, on 11/20/2007, -0/+1Not to mention anything that's Javascripted can send info back about what you actually do on the page.
- hysterix, on 11/20/2007, -0/+1I hate microsoft so much, but not as much as I hate apple. No fan boy here; ***** YOU ALL UP YOUR STUPID ASSES.
- hightower77, on 11/20/2007, -0/+1Ok, I can't tell if you are replying to me and if you are, then I really don't get what you are trying to say.
I don't ask myself why we have free speech. I know why. Maybe you should look at the definition. No one said anything about censoring our speech.
Again, if you are doing things and talking about things that you wouldn't want people to hear, then odds are, you shouldn't be doing those things. Maybe I'm wrong here, but I don't care if anyone hears me on the phone. I've done nothing questionable to warrant a further investigation. If it helps keep this country secure, which you seem so concerned about, then I'm all for it. If it catches one person that may be a threat, even better.
And by the way, I'm sure when we founded this country we called all the lawmakers, kings and queens in jolly Ole England tools. Very mature sir. You win.
I think you need to get out of our country. You from the look of your post don't know the first thing about any of our rights. Seeing as noone is censoring anyone in this case. I'm ashamed that you are a product of our educational system. I'm willing to bet it's because you didn't take your education seriously. But, it's not your fault I'm sure. I bet you are probably one of the ones who thinks that if you didn't get a good education, it's not your fault, it's the governments, or your parents, or your dogs fault I'm sure. Have some accountability for yourself. - holybjork, on 11/20/2007, -0/+1So why exactly would Apple use a widely recognized acronym like IMEI? Why not come up with something creative... like iIMEI? Wait.. that's not creativity... that's just adding a lowercase i in front of a common word or acronym...
- cfulp, on 11/20/2007, -0/+1http://todd.dailey.info/archives/2007/11/19/the-ip ... Why are you so quick to judge on no facts at all? Dug down for not dong research, and lying about the price...come on man.
