- BoostedAxela, on 09/27/2008, -10/+67As a PROUD AppleTV owner, I'm both interested and scared at the same time. I've always thought AppleTV never got the recognition it deserved. Everyone I've showed it to has been enthralled with it and immediately sees the value of it. I would hate to see Apple give up on it.
The fact that they have yet to update it to download HD TV shows directly to the device has made me curious whether or not they were readying a full-scale update to the device (Apple 3.0??), which would be welcomed. However, if that is only available for a new device, I'd be pretty pissed.
I guess we'll see on Tuesday. - enantiodromia, on 09/27/2008, -10/+30I was so very close to getting an Apple TV, but with Netflix Online going to the Xbox360, why bother. Also, I hate iTunes.
- gourami, on 09/27/2008, -1/+20ATV is a very promising device, but it's missing a few key features IMO:
1. Built-in DVD player (Blu-Ray would be nice but $$$)
2. Faster menu system...menus sometimes hang over hdmi connections
3. A dedicated power button. Holding the play/pause button for several seconds on the remote is not the ideal way to power off a device. It also makes programming a universal remote a bitch. My ATV also turns itself on all the time for no apparent reason.
4. Allow customization of the menu system (as in iTunes view options)
5. Visualizer options (again, like iTunes). The screen saver sorting through the picture library gets old quick. - SilverBlade2k, on 09/27/2008, -3/+20Apple TV is/was essentially useless for Canadians....Plus, you can only stream iTunes shows using it, nothing else.
The iPod can play DRM-Free mp3's from competing music stores...so why can't Apple TV stream divx/mkv/etc (OUT OF THE BOX), without hacking it?..it has the capabilities to... - Jrr6415sun, on 09/27/2008, -2/+17it's not being discontinued, don't buy one
- JoshuaGross, on 09/27/2008, -0/+14I'd say wait. Even if it's discontinued, I'm sure you could find one on ebay, etc (if you still wanted it).
- jwdav, on 09/27/2008, -1/+14The value of it is *not* having to hook up your computer, among other things.
- n8to, on 09/27/2008, -2/+14Like the first couple of posts, I too am a proud owner of an Apple TV. However, like one poster mentioned, being in Canada we get none of the TV shows on iTunes and all the movies are a month late (the same as the US). Despite this, I bought the Apple TV because I got tired of plugging my Macbook into to the TV everytime I wanted to watch a show or movie I downloaded.
The hacking part of an Apple TV is a piece of cake. That is, of course, you have any sort of computer skill and like to mess around a bit (windows or mac). At the same time, although my parents and friends found the Apple TV amazing, I was never ready to give a full fledged endorsement for fear I would become their technical support contact for hacking.
But its just a shame you can't do it all legally. When I was younger and poorer (read - student), I downloaded all my music from Napster, Kazaa and then Limeware. But once iTunes came along, it make finding music so convenient - and so why not? The same goes for the Apple TV. When there are movies that I want to see, I will gladly pay Apple & Co. my $5.99 to rent an HD movie for the Apple TV. It's simple and the quality rocks. But when a movie I want to see can't be found in iTunes but can be found on the Pirate Bay, what do you think I am going to do? Drive to Blockbuster? Have you seen the price of gas?
I don't think Apple is going to give up on the ATV just yet - not with the inroads they are finally making with the movie studios and bringing NBC back to iTunes. Hopefully we will see something new and improved (that will give me an excuse to upgrade). - imacmike, on 09/27/2008, -4/+16CRAP! I was about to buy one. Should I run out and buy one now, out of fear that it's being discontinued, or should I wait in anticipation of a possible AppleTV version 3?
- wizard13335, on 09/27/2008, -4/+14Yeah, I also love my Apple TV. However, due to lack of updates, Genius playlists and HD TV shows are unavailable. Not only that, but it seems I can't add YouTube favorites or view my subscriptions (possibly due to recent changes at youtube.com). That might just be on my end, though.
Apple is usually very punctual about their releases, and there hasn't been one in a while to deal with these issues. I hope that means there's going to be a big software update like you suggested, and not that it's being discontinued or replaced with another product. - inactive, on 09/27/2008, -11/+20xbmc nuff said
- zaren, on 09/27/2008, -0/+8The email doesn't say anything about destroying / returning the Apple TVs, just the current marketing media, and one particular type of media in particular. It's licensing related, thought the timing of Tuesday is interesting.
- olsonjj, on 09/28/2008, -1/+8I'm less concerned about the AppleTV after I found aTVFlash http://atvflash.com/ which allows me to add a lot of functionality I wish Apple had done. And its software only, so I can always roll it back. I've got a 1Gb ext USB drive connected to my AppleTV now and I'm loving it.
- kidd3ckz, on 09/27/2008, -2/+9I like chicken
- Ipexx, on 09/28/2008, -1/+8Netflix sucks right now 95% b movies
- jwdav, on 09/27/2008, -0/+7His statement isn't "false", but that does not make it true for everyone.
Why is it inconceivable that a 360 is a good solution for some and an AppleTV is a good solution for others. - Giga, on 09/28/2008, -0/+6@ MrSkills
We got it, it just wasn't funny. - drewfusb, on 09/27/2008, -0/+6how much? im interested
- DephexTwin, on 09/27/2008, -2/+8Good point. Apple TV never actually existed.
- kefkaantakrist, on 09/27/2008, -4/+10shrug my TV and my computer monitor are one and the same, so the AppleTV really has no value to me at all. I guess, for some people, this is not an option or at least not an attractive one, but I would recommend it over buying another box.
- Me1000, on 09/28/2008, -0/+5no, the licenses for the material is about to expire...

http://www.macrumors.com/2008/09/27/apple-tv-to-be ... - inactive, on 09/27/2008, -9/+14... the device is a rather expensive replacement for a $6 video cable.
Monoprice.com --> all the cables you need, most less than $5 - whahaa, on 09/27/2008, -2/+7but xbmc can stream anything from other computers seamlessly. including itunes. not taking a side, just saying.
- liquisoft, on 09/27/2008, -2/+7Needs to?
- PrometheusBorn, on 09/28/2008, -0/+5I disagree with the notion that Apple haters always say the only difference is marketing. It's flat out wrong. Yes, they do some great marketing, but that's not the big difference.
Even Steve Ballmer isn't that ignorant. He recognizes the advantage that Apple has by controlling both hardware and software. - Chakat, on 09/27/2008, -4/+9I have both. The AppleTV gets much more use. Being able to stream itunes content from other computers seamlessly is real nice.
- jwdav, on 09/27/2008, -0/+5Same here - I enjoyed messing around with XMBC/MythTV, but the original xbox is just not up to the job anymore and makes no sense to tie up (or look at) a computer to connect to my TV when AppleTV is a few hundred bucks.
Now, with iPhone Remote, Airtunes, Movie Rentals, *plus* with the Awkward/Nito/Networking stuff installed, AppleTV is a phenomenal little box.
A new model would be a cool thing. - liquisoft, on 09/27/2008, -0/+4or maybe it's not!
- fugazied, on 09/27/2008, -1/+5To say it's just marketing is naive. There's a lot of innovation going on at Apple, I can't think of another company with a stream of interesting high quality products like Apple has, care to name one? (apart from Google)
- notadiggtard, on 09/27/2008, -0/+4ATV has always worked as advertised. It hasn't been popular because it doesn't have the feature set/price most people want.( own one and love it).
Vista is bad for other reasons.Bad comparison. - naked_violence, on 09/27/2008, -1/+5 Makes a great looking streaming library. I have Netflix online also. It has plenty of B movies. And no, not the good ones. Just not there yet.
- beerbarron, on 09/27/2008, -1/+5First off Apple TV was a great concept, but it really was feature lacking. I own one of these said boxes, and I do enjoy it. But had they added a PVR, this would of been my cream to my coffee. Who knows, apple may actually make a TV set with in built apple tv someday?
- naked_violence, on 09/27/2008, -1/+4I say wait. Right around the corner and I'm sure there will be plenty to buy for cheap after this "possible" item.
- MikeyTwit, on 09/28/2008, -1/+4I'm Canadian, and I'd disagree. But then again bit torrent and Visual Hub have made my Apple TV the centre of my home theatre.
- enantiodromia, on 09/27/2008, -0/+3it has cartoons, and that's enough to keep the kids quiet for a while :)
- Blizaine, on 09/27/2008, -4/+7it's not being discontinued, yes buy one.
Updates are always free and after using XBMC, MythTV, and various other extenders, even my 360 (which I love), the AppleTV is second to none for watching/listening to your media. It is what I always find myself using. - surferjoemaui, on 09/28/2008, -0/+3My buddy almost ***** the other day when I showed him how I could play any thing on my computer through my home stereo using my i phone as a remote control All wirelessly!
- securitymonkey, on 09/28/2008, -0/+3This is a licensing issue on the images used in the advertisements. Hence Apple's request to have the literature and displays removed/destroyed. New displays are on the way.
AppleTV is not going anywhere anytime soon.
Everyone calm down. - Chakat, on 09/27/2008, -0/+3Apple seems to run an October-September fiscal cycle, so the timing could just coincide with the end of the fiscal year, and thus, closing out of old accounts.
- naked_violence, on 09/27/2008, -4/+7My XBMC is surrounded by webs. Selling it.
- honesttussey, on 09/27/2008, -3/+6or these people could just get an xbox and run XBMC for like $99. Well I guess that doesn't work for HD content...
Maybe Popcorn TV + large HD?
http://www.popcornhour.com - CDRaff, on 09/27/2008, -0/+3I really don't need another DVD player in my entertainment center, having one on my 360, PS3, and upscaling DVD player that came with my surround sound system, but all the other arguments you made are very valid.
I would also like to see support for more video files, I hate converting stuff! - Ryan_KW, on 09/27/2008, -0/+3I've always noticed that when an upgrade is coming, the price at the Apple refurbished store always drops a few weeks before the launch. After a quick browse, I noticed that Time Capsule has dropped in price. Could it be an ATV, Time Capsule, Internet device hybrid?
- ozziek, on 09/27/2008, -0/+3Given AppleTV is just a Mac anyway, surely it would be possible to add EyeTV etc via USB and a software update?
- olsonjj, on 09/28/2008, -0/+3Wow.. screw up on my part -- upgraded my AppleTV with 1 Terabyte ext usb hard drive..not 1 gig.. wow.. need more sleep I guess.
- robungar, on 09/27/2008, -0/+3Yea, I'd love to see a visualizer, is it really that difficult?
- eldridgea, on 09/27/2008, -0/+3If I'm not mistaken Apple has a 15 day return policy.
So buy Monday. - jerrycan, on 09/27/2008, -0/+3I would have bought an ATV if it could do what XBMC does as well as support playback of HD avis over a network share.
- CarzorStelatis, on 09/27/2008, -0/+3Mac Mini with an HDMI port, eSata and optional Bluray. Yes, the latter of those would be very expensive especially at Apple's face-stabbing upgrade prices, but if they can have a $799 upgrade on the Air then why not optional Bluray on the Mini?
- c010rb1indusa, on 09/27/2008, -1/+3Why would Apple sell a product that competes with its movie store?
