- mrstone, on 10/19/2008, -5/+51Definitely cool, but doesn't seem very practical.
- richgustavson, on 10/20/2008, -4/+45Stewie: Hey Brian, check it out, I can remotely control my iPhone with a program called Veency.
Brian: What'd you say?
Stewie: I can remotely control my iPhone with Veency.
Brian: Veency?
Stewie: Veency, yeah.
Brian: You mean VNC.
Stewie: Yeah, Veency.
Brian: VNC.
Stewie: Veency.
Brian: VNC.
Stewie: Veency.
Brian: You're saying it weird. Why are you putting so much emphasis on the V?
Stewie: What are you talking about? I'm just saying it. Veency. You use Veency to remotely control your iPhone. iPhone remote control works better with Veency.
Brian: Say VNC.
Stewie: VNC.
Brian: Now what do you remotely control your iPhone with?
Stewie: Veency.
Brian: VNC.
Stewie: Veency.
Brian: VNC.
Stewie: Veency.
Brian: You're using a Mac! - diggzoid, on 10/20/2008, -1/+35I'm looking for a Widescreen TV that lets me control my clicker.
- macslut, on 10/19/2008, -4/+36This is very practical if you want to use the keyboard on your Mac/PC to write lots of text on the iPhone, e.g., writing SMS messages.
You could also use this to write long emails. The situation where you'd want to do this is if there was no WiFi and you didn't want to tether your iPhone. All you'd need to do is set up a computer-to-computer WiFi connection on your computer, and then connect to it with your iPhone. From there, you could VNC to the iPhone and write your emails rapidly with your full sized keyboard.
Another great use for this would be for putting together tutorials for iPhone apps. You can very easily go through the app and take screenshots or video directly on your computer instead of trying to take them on the iPhone and then send them to your computer.
Also, suppose you wanted to demo an iPhone app at a conference. The iPhone doesn't have video out for the interface, but with Veency you could connect it to from a computer connected to a projector or presentation monitor.
This is an early build. If it added the ability to copy and paste as well as other features (drag and drop), there's a lot of potential for additional utility. - Wuss, on 10/20/2008, -0/+21Why would you use this to write SMS's and/or emails through your iphone? If you're sitting at a computer with a keyboard, wouldn't you just use the computer?!
- russ3, on 10/20/2008, -1/+22If i could wipe my ass from another room i totally would
- megamod, on 10/19/2008, -1/+21it's nice for when you have to organize your icons I guess. I get reallllly impatient when doing that on my iphone.
It's better now that you don't have to re-organize them EVERY time that you update an app. - EagleRock, on 10/20/2008, -0/+19I'm going to use this from my Mac to remotely access my iPhone. I'll use the Apple Remote app to control iTunes on my Mac through my iPhone...through my Mac.
For the ultimate in redundancy. - inactive, on 10/20/2008, -11/+23this is the dumbest ***** ever, like remotely wiping your ass
- waynesutton, on 10/20/2008, -0/+11This is very useful to record iPhone app demos, see: http://iphonesinrtp.com/2008/10/13/iphone-app-vide ...
- colecut, on 10/20/2008, -0/+10yeah, you have a full keyboard.... because you're sitting at a computer.
use that. - timusca, on 10/20/2008, -2/+11Isn't one of the points of the iPhone to control other things with it? That's like using your garage door to control the garage door opener.
- svensksvamp, on 10/20/2008, -0/+9Something fishy about you...
- gamebittk, on 10/20/2008, -1/+9I could put this on my dad's iPhone and freak the crap out of him.
- timusca, on 10/20/2008, -0/+7Yes, but they really need to change the way icons are moved from one page to another. If it has to travel 2 pages across, it is nearly impossible to make it happen without shifting every icon over one spot, thus moving one to another page if that page is full.
- liquisoft, on 10/20/2008, -1/+8Seems like an interesting idea, at first, but in practice I dare say it would fail. If I had a choice between a laptop and my iPhone, I would use my laptop to do everything. But since I don't carry my laptop around everywhere, I use my iPhone for basic computing and internet needs. The whole concept seems backwards.
- robbob, on 10/20/2008, -0/+7Gotta jb first
- verifex, on 10/20/2008, -0/+7I want an app to control my iPhone and my PC from my refrigerator.
- valleyman86, on 10/20/2008, -0/+6I want to make an app that lets me control the music (ipod/pandora) from the pc. This would be so I can put the iphone in the dock, listen to music, and not have to get up and go across the room to switch songs or whatever.
- reqork, on 10/20/2008, -0/+5I can remotely respond to an email on my iPhone using my computer? BRILLIANT! Technology is awesome.
- xenex11, on 10/20/2008, -3/+8control your PC from your phone = Win
control your phone from your PC = Fail - timeshifter, on 10/20/2008, -0/+5With a bluetooth headset this could be very useful. Just sit the phone down somewhere and get to work on your computer. Now all of your phone control can be done on your computer screen right along with all your other work. You're very own high-end call center app!
- lepton, on 10/20/2008, -0/+4Holy cow, I got a start for a second because I'm about to release an app that I thought does the same thing! But no, this one uses VNC to control the iPhone, while mine goes the other way, it controls a computer WITH the iPhone. Mine is different from the other VNC apps out there because it is purely remote-control oriented. It has screens for easily controlling Front Row, Keynote, and other media and presentation apps. It should be out in a week or so. http://myallo.com/leptonic/airmote
- Mithivh, on 10/20/2008, -0/+4I think it's his username
- svensksvamp, on 10/20/2008, -0/+4That's the only way to go
- toetagger, on 10/20/2008, -0/+3Yes - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IH6I9xPJ7OE
- TaylorTAP, on 10/20/2008, -0/+3Dummy, get PDANet, it uses ad-hoc wifi to tether your iphone to your PC...
- inactive, on 10/20/2008, -0/+3I like to Remote Play into my PS3, on a PSP connected to the same HDTV the PS3 is.
While using RemoteJoy to let me use a PS3 controller to control the PSP. - Poonchow, on 10/20/2008, -2/+5Is this really necessary?
- johnalan, on 10/20/2008, -0/+2might be useful in conjunction with that air sharing app.
- Haecceity, on 10/20/2008, -1/+3Hey! You could use this to control the Remote Control app on your iPhone from your computer -- which means that you could control your computer directly from your computer! How cool is that!
- garugaga, on 10/20/2008, -0/+2dugg for psychical
- jimbellizzi, on 10/20/2008, -1/+3I thought it was the other way around? There is a VNC App for normal iPhones that allows you to access your macbook or PC from anywhere via your iphone. That to me is useful, switching it around is only useful for computer programmers.
- borez, on 10/20/2008, -3/+5Why?
- RizzoFrank, on 10/20/2008, -0/+2I thought it was the same thing. I know you can vnc into your home pc and that works awesome. Actually thats the only reason I would buy an iphone. But vnc into your iphone, that's just dumb.
- cerealjynx, on 10/20/2008, -0/+2Because maybe you're in an area with no wifi.
- inactive, on 10/20/2008, -3/+5how about a full keyboard?
- bas4ball, on 10/20/2008, -0/+2This is something I've actually been waiting a long time for. I'm a lazy ass and my stereo's all the way on the other side of the room, so I don't like to get up to change the song. Now I'm waiting for a robot to bring me everything else :)
- macslut, on 10/20/2008, -0/+2Would you like one? I have an extra one you could have.
- psykiv, on 10/20/2008, -0/+2Unless you can use it to remotely self-destruct your phone (like in case it gets stolen) I don't see a point.
- DougieD, on 10/20/2008, -0/+2Can I control my TV from my iphone?
- piwy, on 10/20/2008, -0/+2You seem to forget that you can make computer to computer connections rikkochet.
- Logicwax, on 10/20/2008, -0/+2I have found this very useful in helping friends and family members with their phones. Whenever my friends have questions about installing specific software packages on their phones or misc. help, I just ask for their IP address and I can remote admin their phone remotely. I can only imagine how useful this would be for the IT staff at a company that hands out iPhones as well. It's just like getting remote desktop support on your PC.
- sodypop77, on 10/20/2008, -0/+2Just a clarification:
Viewing video on another device via VNC does not work well because the VNC client needs a screen refresh for every frame of video and wouldn't be able to keep up. The end result would not be actual video, but more like real time snapshots. It would still work a monitor as you pointed out though. - GothAlice, on 10/20/2008, -0/+1As a developer, I use the Simulator and ScreenFlow to record my demos.
- mykotron, on 10/20/2008, -0/+1yep
- mpastrana, on 10/20/2008, -0/+1every starbucks ... in the US.
/mp - macslut, on 10/20/2008, -1/+2Here's another use...
Put the iPhone in camera mode and then use it to monitor something in another room in the house. - kolobcreek, on 10/23/2008, -0/+1You're just jealous because you don't have one.
- wvdavis, on 10/20/2008, -0/+1Not to hijack the thread but check out Mocha VNC Lite (Free) to do what you are talking about.
