Reliable Sources Confirm: Brushed aluminum iMac due next week
thinksecret.com — Apple is poised to deliver its third Mac revision in less than a month next week when the company takes the wraps off its new iMac line. Sources with reliable track records report the new iMac, wrapped in a brushed aluminum enclosure, is currently tracking for release at or around Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference on June 11.

AppleInsider kicks ThinkSecret in the crotch. - axiomflash, on 10/11/2007, -4/+22god damn it, its not brushed aluminum! its just annodized aluminum!
- griz, on 10/11/2007, -1/+11I still say NO to the brushed aluminum look. I think this is a decoy leak and what we will see will not be what people are talking about.
- Charlotte_Web, on 10/11/2007, -0/+12Quicktime and iTunes no longer use brushed aluminum.
I thought we were done with the brushed aluminum look? - panique, on 10/11/2007, -1/+7Apple has never announced any Macs from the "Consumer" column at WWDC.

Aww.. I was hoping for an iMac that looks like my old TI99/4a. - Takuro, on 10/11/2007, -1/+11Why would Apple knock out the current iMac focus on the professional market? There would be a staggering imbalance of professional machines to non-professional desktops. I mean, what's left for household users? only Minis? If professionals need to render projects in Final Cut, they get a Mac Pro. If they are on-the-go, they get a MacBook Pro. Therefore, making a professional iMac is totally redundant.
So basically, I call Mac rumor shananigans. - jamesong, on 10/11/2007, -6/+2Mac Rumors FTW!

http://digg.com/apple/Brushed_Metal_iMacs_Dropping_at_WWDC - mgkwho, on 10/11/2007, -11/+10If the iMac is repositioned as a premium product, as TS suggests, than I can picture its release at WWDC. Otherwise it has no purpose being there.
And if this means the 17" is dropped, and if others are right about the demise of the mac mini, Apple needs to bring back a mid range desktop. (And low too, I guess, unless the would-be "new" product is a combination of both).
-=|Mgkwho- noahhoward, on 10/11/2007, -3/+2IF there is any truth to be had in here, it seems that, when looked at with the other rumors, Apple does indeed plan on bringing out a midrange desktop. Otherwise they are whittling down their offerings too far.
My inner nerd has its fingers crossed for a Mid Range desktop that can run MS Applications natively all whle competatively priced. - crazybrit, on 10/11/2007, -2/+3Still though, making a brushed metal iMac, which suggests a "pro" machine, is against the whole point of the iMac. It would make more sense if it was anondyzzzeded (I have no idea what the word is and Firefox's spell checker isn't helping) aluminum, like the Mac Mini and Nano.
- neiltc13, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3I actually think a Mid Range desktop would do far better for Apple than a Mac mini.
- cookiebearo, on 10/11/2007, -4/+3mgkwho, do you ever read replies to your comments?
i think by now you would have realized that you always get modded down for having that signature, and plenty of people have told you it's a waste -- i think you would fare much better without it
what i'm _really_ confused about though, is that i saw a post of yours on macrumors.com, and you didn't even put that in the signature (below the line), you still went out of your way to add it into your post (?)
the world may never know... - mgkwho, on 10/11/2007, -4/+1Yeah, actually I read recent ones all the time. I can't believe I forgot my sig! Can you send me a link to the post I forgot to add, because I couldn't find it...
I've posted my reasons once or twice for keeping a sig but I just got dugg down, just like this post will be, so I don't bother explaining anymore.

- leowatson, on 10/11/2007, -11/+7Brushed metal is so... early 00's.
- jahue, on 10/11/2007, -8/+45Dont trust any source that calls the aluminum casing that Apple uses "brushed" First off its ANODIZED not brushed, brushed aluminum has a grain "scratches" if you will and is not very durable. Anodized aluminum is a chemical process that oxidizes the finish and makes it much harder. If an insider is calling it brushed I wouldn't expect him/her to be reliable because any designer that is a designer knows the difference, and I assure you Apple knows the difference.
Apple HAS NEVER USED A BRUSHED ALUMINUM FINISH even the Ti PowerBook was Anodized Titanium!
Jahue- msikma, on 10/11/2007, -14/+5While you're correct about that, it would still be called "brushed" because the grey aluminum interface of Mac OS X is widely called that. Nobody speaks of an "anodized" Finder, for example, while Safari is a good example of an application that uses the "Brushed Metal" interface graphics.
- RadioFreeOpium, on 10/11/2007, -13/+6Calm down, "brushed aluminum" is probably just a generic term for that style. Anyways, if we can take any cue from the black macbook, a new finish probably carries a heftier price.
- geminitojanus, on 10/11/2007, -3/+20"While you're correct about that, it would still be called "brushed" because the grey aluminum interface of Mac OS X is widely called that."
No, the Mac OS X interface /was/ brushed metal, you see all of those grooves and cuts? That's caused by the brushing process.

Anodized metal is a flat look, like this:
http://www.apeshop.com/images/mp3_players/Apple-Ipod-Nano-Silver.jpg
(or the bar at the top of that smaller window in the second above picture)
Apple's switching all of their apps to use the anodized look in Leopard, so that there's no further confusion. - jahue, on 10/11/2007, -4/+17No brushed aluminum is not a generic term, They are not interchangeable because they are totally different. The interface is brushed metal hence the fine horizontal lines. I work in product design and we never use those two interchangeably because one cost 3-4 times more than the other, Anodizing makes the finish hard and has a satin finish that has NO GRAIN, brushing has a much softer finish and is prone to scratches and needs a clear finish so it wont hold oil from your skin.
- jahue, on 10/11/2007, -8/+3Damn you beat me to it!

- RidgeWalker76, on 10/11/2007, -3/+3I just want to see the iMac updated. I think the G5 iMacs still look great, but it has been a long time since the product received a major overhaul.

"Days Since Update 275 (Avg = 168)" According to MacRumors, the iMac is long overdue for an update. I can't wait to see what they do. - cheddarbek, on 10/11/2007, -11/+4Even if it is 'anodized', the common street usage is brushed. So thats what we'll call it by. Hell, everyone says the Mac Pro is 'brushed aluminum'.
- bryanback, on 10/11/2007, -7/+2I've never heard ANYONE describe the hardware as "brushed aluminum." With good reason: A) it's not brushed aluminum and B) it doesn't even look brushed. "Brushed aluminum" is what everyone (apple included) uses to describe the look of windows with Aqua. Ya know, how they all look like someone took some aluminum, and brushed it?
- tugger, on 10/11/2007, -3/+4The aluminium is really tough, my macbook pro casing still looks new and it's over a year old. My HP laptop (which is the same age) is looking tired already, where the crappy silver-colored plastic has worn through on the corners, and even the lettering on the keys is wearing off too.. Interesting the difference between a quality and a volume manufacturer, and there was only $100 difference in the price, I reckon the resale value is alot more than that now.
I've never liked the form factor of the iMac G5 (although the 24" version is better) there's just too much flat unused plastic on the lower front edge, and this would look even worse in aluminium. If the screen reached to all 4 edges, the aluminium would look fantastic! (as long as it isn't 'brushed') - miles01110, on 10/11/2007, -5/+9never mind, deleted

It was bad enough when Apple thought it looked good on applications, it's even worse on hardware! I thought they were past that *****. - billizm, on 10/11/2007, -14/+3One reason I like PCs: You can buy any after-market form factor case you want.
- noahhoward, on 10/11/2007, -2/+6Thanks for you mostly irrelavent comment. You can do the same for a Mac by the way but I'm not sure why you'd want to.
- colincornaby, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4Unless you want an all in one. There isn't exactly a wide selection of All in One cases for PC's.

Computers are not made to be pretty. I have never bought a computer based on looks. - cbiz, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3to bad 95% of pc cases are butt ugly...if you start at the back of any pc mag or pc gaming mag you will see truly ugly designs from a host of resellers..although (product plug) Cooler Master makes some sweet cases.
- bbardlbradd, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2In case you PC "only one way to do any one thing" enthusiasts don't realize... Macs ARE computers. They are built with the exact same hardware you find in any PC. If you want to change the case, you can. Even a Mac Mini can be stuffed into any case you'd like, but you'd have to get longer IDE/SATA cables and such and do some other work to make the I/O board fit... It will take work, but at least you're not running windows just for the case. eugh :/
@n8r0n
Well, I'm sure you're right, I agree with you. Why should someone buy a computer b/c it looks nice. Maybe look at it this way. Would you rather have a PC that gives you problems all the time that looks like an alien spacecraft, or a mac with less problems, look like what it is, a computer?

- blackprizm, on 10/11/2007, -3/+1Please Apple... give us a DX10 graphics card in this baby.... pretty please with sugar on it?
- Topher06, on 10/11/2007, -6/+0I don't know. I mean, why is this exciting? Sure PC case designs suck, but its long been proven people want the flexibility of options of a PC rather then elegant design. And it seems all Apple is doing these days is redesiging the iMac without any real significant innovation.
They can probably put the iMac in a new metal slim enclosure because of the new Santa Rosa chipset and new Core 2 Duo from Intel allowing better power savings and less heat generation. If thats the case, I hope Steve sends Intel lots of thank you letters for all the innovation Intel is doing allowing Apple to make cutesy computers in elegant form factors. Lord knows that Apple hasn't truely innovated in the computer market for the last few years (right around the time they cosied up to Intel). I mean, all they do is add off the shelf PC components like a web cam, or cram a computer into an LCD screen and expect to be applauded for it.
Apple just keeps on ignoring the fact people want a screenless mid range Mac product (not low end like the Mac Mini) to fill in the huge gap left in their product lineup. Honestly, I think Apple might start to see double digit percentage of market penetration if they came out with a Mac box which is flexible and not overpriced like the Mac Pro.
But, whatever. Apple is successful doing the things they do, and I am sure just because they put an iMac in a metal enclosure there will be people lining up to buy and replace their defunct plastic enclosure iMac. If there is a market of people ignoring the blatant obvious facts, then its an excelent market to exploit, Apple has learned this lesson long ago.
But I have never believed despite all the PR and fanboyisms that Apple truely wants to overtake the PC market for computers. Come out with a metal iMac and appeal to 5% of the market and ignore the fact the iMac form factor has never started a stampede of PC users switching to Apple. You can dabble with the design all you want, but it ain't working. Oh they switched case designs, PC market largely unimpressed and continue the status quo.- dagamer34, on 10/11/2007, -3/+2Intelligent people want flexibility. However, inteligent people are also more likely to build their own than buy it.
Normal people want what works. The iMac works pretty well. - bbardlbradd, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3@dagamer34
Correction. Intelligent people don't spend all of their time on building computers, they just want a computer as a tool to get the information or results they need with as little hassle as possible, so having a computer that just does its job like it's meant to, would be favored over a computer that you can put together easier than a lego set.
People who _THINK_ they are intelligent like to sit around their rooms w/ their custom PCs and brag online about how smart they are for inserting a zif processor, and knowing what "RAM" means. - carlfish, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3I'm perfectly capable of doing all the research, selecting all the parts, finding some friend who can get them for me at wholesale prices and building a kick-ass PC. For the last five years my home desktop has been an iMac because I don't want to waste my time with that boring drudge-work. Give me a computer that works great out of the box, and that I can replace every two or three years.
"Apple just keeps on ignoring the fact people want a screenless mid range Mac product..."
Correction. Apple keeps ignoring the fact that _you_ want a screenless mid-range Mac product. "People" still think the screen is the computer, and call the big metal box the "hard drive". - deadbaby, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4You have to remember Apple isn't a typical computer company. They have made an art out of maximizing profits for a small market share. A mid-range tower will cut into Mini, iMac and Mac Pro sales and, more importantly, it will be in direct competition with Dell, HP, etc who sell computers at razor thin margins. Apple would rather stick with the markets they are in now that have higher profit margins.

- angusm, on 10/11/2007, -3/+2The real Apple fanboys are now stripping out all the white polycarbonate finish in their homes and replacing everything with brushed aluminum so that the new iMac won't look out of place when they bring it home.
- yobkeeg, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1This doesn't make any sense. Apple traditionally seperates their product lines via different enclosures styles for pro-sumers and home-sumers. Using the same aluminum enclosure for both consumer lines in going to be confusing. I don't think they are going to do this unless they plan on changing the enclosures for their all pro-sumer products.
- Leofan7, on 10/11/2007, -2/+4This is why I ended up not buying a Mac. Too damn confusing and frustrating with their secretive product releases, and they're just getting too damn cocky. Any more snobbery and they'll put their own asses out of business. I love Macs, but why do they have to play this silly game with their paying customers? It's not funny.

- patrickloggins, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2I don't see why this would happen. Apple seem to be very strict with their design. The "consumer" line (iMac, MacBook) stay white, while the "professional" line is metal (Mac Pro, MacBook Pro). Possibly a black iMac, or (this would be lame) a name change to "Mac", but not brushed. I'd like to see someone make one themselves, though.
