Step one: Delete porn folder.
Done. - xboxing, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Another thing to mention is do a custom install when installing OS X and you'll save yourself a lot of these steps by not installing language packs, printer drivers, etc in the first place.
- karlschmidt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Cadet,
WinDirStat has the same graphical representation as DiskInventoryX.
I use it on occasion, and find it very helpful.
Good Luck! - trogdoor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I have been using whatsize ( it's also free )

Read down into the comments for better info. - Katore, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2If you have Garageband, especially with any Jam Packs, the demo songs can take up ~500MB each. Delete those files in /Library/App Support/GarageBand/GarageBand Demo Songs/...
- fudgebrown, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Another thing to check: If you won an iPod and sync all your photos into the iPod, it creates an iPod Photo Cache folder within your iPhoto directory. If you have a few thousand photos, this iPod Photo Cache can be 5 - 6 GBs. YOu can delete that folder (though, each time you sync your iPod it will redo the "optimize photos" step), OR you can just sync one iPhoto album, and call it iPod Photos, and dump your favorite photos in there within iPhoto so you're only syncing a select few, which is what i do.

- aristan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The only programs I had trouble with were Acrobat & WoW. InDesign actually launchs in about 1/3 the time now pretty cool.
digg++ - rj89, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1look at "WTF" on the right side he had the grossest cyst i've seen....oh yeah nice tips dugg
- colinnowra, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Monoligual made my PPC apps unusable. Rosetta was probably wiped. Had to reinstall OS X. (Running Intel iMac)
- lo0ol, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It's worth mentioning to be careful while doing this if you have an Intel-based Mac. A friend already messed up a few of his apps because he removed some of the Universal binaries in OS X. You've been warned and all that jazz.
- jjustice, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Great article, but consider using permalinks next time. Following this link and getting a photo of someone giving the Olympics the finger is not as useful as the hard drive reclamation info :-)

GIBS! - MicHalpin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I didn't know that the klingon language is on OSX....serious look it up.
- trogdoor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Wow, disk inventory X is _much_ faster than any other disk sweeper I have ever used (including commercial ones) and the graphical representation really helps Digg++.
- jeffburg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0over 2gb of useless languages and pdf's
good tips - StatusQuoRules, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Now to have more than 75GB available to me on my brand new MacBook Pro 100gb :D
- stlcadet11, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0intimidated* sorry its a monday and i had 3 hours of sleep
- oldsk00l, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is actually a neat story, thanks for submitting :)
I freed up quite a bit of space very quickly. - Phssthpok, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1For Windows Treesize is good enough for me. Use it every day. Right click | treesize
http://www.jam-software.com/freeware/index.shtml - fani, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I use - a terminal and "du -sk * | sort -n" to see which folders take up space. You can do this recursively with a script and print pretty totals for each folder. Quite easy.
I like the monolingual tool. Very useful.
Also, my spotlight now runs slower. It takes about 6-7 secs now on my 1.6Ghz G5. Not been able to speed that up. Any tips ? - MikhoohkiM, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i would reinstall OS X instead i have a great back up system and it would take less the an hour, this program looks to only get ride of stuff you could have gotten rid of by uncheacking a few boxes when installing your OS.
I just switched to mac last march, and I still get this need and want to reinstall my OS every few months, with windows I did it every month, with OS X I have only done it twice - alexdagrate, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Sorry about the pic of Bode being up there. Anyone know how to make permalinks work in Rapidweaver?
Thanks for the tips, trogdor, Katore, etc. - MicHalpin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0watch out everyone when using Monoligual!!! I just used it on my iBook and now non of the apps work and they have no support for you.
- buss, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Those are pretty good tips for any OS, you'll just need to find different programs. A great tool similar to DiskInventoryX is Sequoia View ( http://www.win.tue.nl/sequoiaview/ ). I use it whenever I need to find some big, unnecessary files. Its free too.
- Drizzit, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0They should realize that their enthusaist market is also the market most likely to play around with Linux. If they cant effectively dual boot then they'll switch to Nvidia to save the headache's.
- andrewd2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Awsome! I went from 5.29 gig on my G4 ibook to 12.85 by following these simple steps!! Thank you for posting this. digg+++
- subwarm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The recommendation of the WhatSize software (http://www.freemacware.com/whatsize/) was totally worth the digg. I have been looking for a program like this for my mac for ages. Just discovered a bloated 5gigs of iPod Photo Cache that didn't need to be there.

Then what would I need the laptop for? - craigtheguru, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I've used OmniDiskSweeper for a while now but I'll check out the other apps suggested.
- gserafini, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I reclaimed over 7 GB of disk with these tips. Dugg++
- datigz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Thanks -- dugg. I got 7 GB back and haven't cleaned out iPhoto (running iLife '06 so can't use iPhoto Diet).
- alexdagrate, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Colinnowara,
I'm terribly sorry about your new Intel iMac becoming Fabar'ed. I should have stressed that I have only attempted these on a PPC based Mac. - UGM2099, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Monolingual has already deleted 1.3GB of stuff which is alot off my 30GB iBook.
Garageband files take up a ton but I haven't had the heart to delete those quite yet. - alexdagrate, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Mods (are there any on Digg?) Please change story link to permalink:

- roberto_deneero, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0whoever posted this is a genius. just last night i was thinking there had to be a utility to clear off the junk....and i was going to look today also for a utility to view what's taking up all the space on the drive. found both in one link. bravo!
- Jason23z, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I freed up over 3 gigs because of this story
Dugg and Dugg! - ideabrian, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Thanks for the mention of AppZapper - Version 1.1.2 is even localized in Japanese now!

http://homepage.mac.com/alexfrix/index.html#unique-entry-id-21 - alexdagrate, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Sorry about the Adobe issue. The dev's site mentions this, and I should have as well:
Adobe's newer applications have a self-heal feature which checks for the existence of certain files and refuses to launch the application if one of those files is missing. This feature does not distinguish between files that are critical components of the program and those files which are not needed, e.g. localization files. Therefore, you should exclude Adobe's from being processed by Monolingual.
Open Monolingual's preferences window, add "/Applications/Adobe Acrobat 7.0 Professional" (for example) and deselect the checkbox next to the item. - thidranki, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0got about 12 gigs!
- streetstealth, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Disk Inventory X is nice (and what I use), but I still wish someone would come out with an OSX version or clone of Steffan Gerlach's "Scanner."
http://www.steffengerlach.de/freeware/
It is, hands down, the best drive usage visualization app I've seen, and it's the one thing, 2 years after switching, that I still miss from Windows! - alexdagrate, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Part Two:
http://digg.com/apple/Reclaim_HD_Space_on_OS_X:_Part_2 - super_duper, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Disk Inventory X is pretty awesome
- ajaxfontura, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Monolingual cleared up a *ton* of space. Highly recommended. 900 megs and counting (still running in the background)
- stlcadet11, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0*scared and itiminated voice* is there anything like this for windows?
