- darthrsg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4my next computer will be an apple, i spent 2 weeks with a loaner and i am sold.
- nealibob, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2All I have to say is that this is sorely needed. We need to keep those drives spun down as much as possible in laptops. There is too much laptop hard drive failure going on now. Frankly, if this cache only lasts a year then it's right on target with a large percentage of other laptop hard drives. Among the college students I support, at least 5% of the laptop users experience hard drive failure within the first six months. I know a lot of this has to do with use, but hell, laptops need to be more rugged or they need to be sold as slightly-more-portable-desktops. I attribute premature laptop hard drive failure to a combination of the following (this applies mainly to Windows users):
1. Cheaper construction due to increased demand
2. Excessive heat inside the laptop case due to poor design or improper use
3. Excessive heat inside the laptop due to CPU use by malware
4. Excessive disk access due to insufficient memory
5. Shock due to improper use or insufficient safety precautions
The problem is that most people do not know anything about computers. Most still can be persuaded that 256MB of RAM is enough for anything, which it is not. No Windows or Mac computer should be sold with less than 512MB of RAM. Does anyone disagree with that? OK, my point here is that this flash-cache is a great step towards making laptop investments worthwhile and safer for the average person. - nihilist001, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"But isn't the problem with flash memory that it has a limited number of writes before it dies? Granted it's a large number but I know with thumb drives for an example if you run an os one one you can burn it out in a year or two."
From wikipedia
"a further limitation is the fact that flash memory has a finite number of erase-write cycles, so that care has to be taken when moving hard-drive based applications, such as operating systems, to flash-memory based devices such as CompactFlash. This effect is partially offset by some chip firmware or filesystem drivers by counting the writes and dynamically remapping the blocks in order to spread the write operations between the sectors, or by write verification and remapping to spare sectors in case of write failure." - bashfulczar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1If anyone is to jump on the innovative bandwagon, it's Apple.
- gr00vy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Digitimes is notoriously incorrect in thier predictions, but hopefully if true, the flash memory is a user replaceable part.
- AndrewMayne, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1After next weeks Mac Expo (the reason or all the rumors) things will cool down...for a while...
(I'm hoping for a super-mini-notebook 8.5 x 5.5 incorporating iPod design elements in a super small form factor - we'll call it the iBook Nano....) - Vancouver, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Keep the rumors coming.... starting to heat up
- YouKnowWho, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Dude they just need enough RAM to hold the boot-up instructions for example, or the files that are primarily accessed when an app is launch.
- evilpettingzoo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I did have an interesting conversation with a apple dealer a week before Christmas and he was talking about some sort of solid state hybrid hard drive. So who knows this might be true. He even called this hard drive by a name I can't remember what it was but it sounded very appleish ie: super magna drive with velocity kinetic engine.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2the Personal On Demand Book.....sweet.
- snark, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'd venture to say Apple will be implementing Robson cache technology that Intel showed off a while back. It uses a NAND flash memory act as an active cache to facilitate fast booting and application launching.
details at: http://www.pcworld.com/news/article/0,aid,123053,00.asp - rzwitserloot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Well, first of all, RUMOR.
Secondly: A lot of you seem to be under the mistaken illusion that this will help apple notebook startup times.
If by 'startup' you mean: The thing you do when you want to do work (open the lid), versus 'the thing you do perhaps once a month if at all' (actually cold boot the machine), then this stuff wont help.
You see, ibooks and powerbooks already 'boot up' (awaken from sleep) within the span of about half a second. No HDD access is performed during this awakening. - kolop1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0 Is it going to be a flash based hard drive. Or some of the operating system on a small flash drive that then kicks over to a standard hard drive to make loading a but faster. I would imagine if they used a large flash drive as a stand alone hard drive it would be expensive.
- Berkana, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Like all rumored Apple magic, this would be schweet if it were true.
If I had money to invest, I'd buy Apple stock a few months before Macworld, and sell between the peaks. You could probably pump the market for money that way; Macworld and WWDC happen cyclically. Or am I mistaken? . . . - MOGua, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I believe "flash-boot" will be the new trend in 2006. Mac AND PC.
can't wait... - MaxwellH, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"If they do it, I'm on board. ***** using old hardware, I'll be down with the experimental gang. I'll be like:
Check my 0 boot time bitches.
pwnd"
LOLZ. Awesome. - tetro, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0heh, I guess that article explains it better
http://www.pcworld.com/news/article/0,aid,123053,00.asp - besouza, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0:D I hope I can afford it.. I need a laptop.
- tetro, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Wow, flash based cache memory. Am I missing something here?
- Zonkzor, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2But isn't the problem with flash memory that it has a limited number of writes before it dies? Granted it's a large number but I know with thumb drives for an example if you run an os one one you can burn it out in a year or two.

Are you a http://CollegeCheapskate.com ? - roxas, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0dam rumors.
i rather wait until next week.
or maybe i should get my laptop when they have updates . . like say around spring time of this year. - trqy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Ha ha look the story :)
Just laughin.. What's next? Powerbook with balls?
NO DIGG. - crapiolio, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1No more Apple, please. My heard exploded!
- sLydE, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I've been waiting and waiting to buy a Powerbook, until the new Intels come out. I bought a mini for a project for work, and was immediately sold on the platform. At work, where we use proprietary Internet Explorer-based web applications, I no longer have a Windows PC at my desk. Good ol' qemu.
I then bought my wife an iBook, who immediately scoffed and insisted that she wouldn't like it, and wouldn't be able to adjust. Now she's hooked as well. I'm just biding my time until those nice dual core intel powerbooks come out, then i'll be breaking the bank. - Gregd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I've been waiting to see what apple has up their sleeve before I purchase my next computer. I hope these rock..
- Tufriast, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2If they do it, I'm on board. ***** using old hardware, I'll be down with the experimental gang. I'll be like:
Check my 0 boot time bitches.
pwnd - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i don't know, my 125MHz windows 95 PC has just about nil boot time
- nugget, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I think that a better place for flash based memory would be for those applications you use constantly. So you do something like this, Have a user be able to put in how ever much flash memory he/she wants and make it so they can have whatever applications on it to launch them faster or things that you want at start up so you don't have to have the HDD running then. Like say you use Firefox, azureus, gaim, and some other program going all the time, why not make it so they run from there and use the flash memory as the ram for those apps. And all the other ones will run a lil slower, but the ones you know you will use will take up the speedy stuff and have priority over specific ram.
- NidStyles, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I just can't wait to see their new small form factor laptop. I wanted the G$ 12", but since the intel ones are around the ocrner I decided to wait.
- Greenline, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Dugg Just in Case
- diggnationdevon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I don't know when mac world starts, but thats when they would announce something like this and not before then.
- The_Larch, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0October 18th 2005
Apple to use Intel’s “Robson flash memory” technology to increase battery life, reduce boot time in Mactel machines
http://macenstein.com/default/archives/62 - TheD, on 10/12/2007, -0/+04 more days! 4 more days!
- krum0786, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'm officially sick of all these rumors for Macworld.
- KAMI_no_kodomo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"I've been waiting to see what apple has up their sleeve before I purchase my next computer. I hope these rock.."
Same here.... - urothane, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Whether it is a rumor or not, I have been saying they will intro a solid state laptop as soon as they made that huge deal on NAND memory after making that huge deal after the Nano launch. Combine yonah chips, Apples already good battery time, and flash based drives and they systems will be pushing 12 hour battery life too.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0WTF Took so long? Solid state systems are the way to go! Why do corperations stall the market constantly? Oh because they can... Oh because innovation and R&D costs! Still waiting for the all in one device.. Do we really need cellphones, pagers, photowallets, pda's,pocketpc's,ipods, gps, flash drives, digital cameras,NintendoDS,PSP's,portable dvd playes, bluetooth headsets,Etc....Etc..?? Whynot intergrate all that to one or 2 devices. I am personally sick of carrying around a laptop, ipod, and cellphone.. that's bad enough. Most these devices can be consolitated into a super ipod or phone.
- badnewsblair, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Nice. And Kudos to the submitter for making clearly marking it as RUMOR and being subjective.
- bobbyjohn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Bring it!
- kiwimonk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Truely Revolutionary
- TheD, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0yeah this is what ive
...kevin and Digg.com=iBendover for walmart
*cough* ...Walmart Planet of the Apes...*cough*
been thinking myself. - crapiolio, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0*head
- cwoolf34, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Someone CREATE A PETITION to only allow ONE APPLE RUMOR on the front page per week. Why doesn't digg have 2 sub-sites, one for windows users and one for mac heads.
FYI I am a mac head, and even I hate these lame rumors. If you want the truthful rumors go to Apple Insider or Mac Rumors and read the forums not just the front page. - tomaburque, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Too many pure speculation articles on Digg.
- beecheyj_14, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Not gonna happen. Flash memory is still too expensive at this point to have sufficient storage in a laptop.
- johnhummel, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3Gah, these rumors are getting annoying. Here, let me try it.
I predict that Macworld will feature Steve Jobs featuring - the iPod Mental! Yes, a new iPod that lets you play music inside your own mind. Capable of holding a billion songs, pictures, and movies! Just close your eyes, clench the iPod Mental (which looks like a rubber ball) and the music will play in your head!
Mix and match other mental pictures to create your own slidehow! No skipping, but some songs (like "Tiptoe through the Tulips" and "Eye of the Tiger" do tend to repeat over and over again whether you want them too or not).
Don't get me wrong - I love my iPod with video, I like my Powerbook, but not a prediction will be helpful. Just sit back, wait the next 2 weeks (or 3 - whatever) and see what comes.
Oh, and save your pennies in case it's cool ;). - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0I AM SO TIRED OF PEOPLE POSTING EVERY LITTLE SILLY RUMOUR THAT COMES ALONG. IT'S ALL NONSENSE AND A WASTE OF OUR TIME.
- NoOneButMe, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3"RUMOR: Apple to buy Microsoft and hire Linus Torvolds to develop a new Closed-Source Operating System while Sun Microsystems and Adobe-Macromedia combine to make SMAM to fight SPAM"
Rumors can say whatever they want - it doesnt make them true. - T3rry, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0"It's why Apple's flash-based iPods start-up so fast and navigate quickly between tracks"
HAH - Heavy_C, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0If this is true, I'll dropkick my Mac and switch to Toshiba. enough with the gimmicks!
