(Contrary to popular belief, CapsLock is not cruise control for awesome.) - eNthem, on 10/12/2007, -3/+22If you love Tetris, I encourage you to watch this documentary on Tetris and it's history produced by BBC: http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=4662636869909322164&q=tetris&hl=en
It's really cool.
BTW, for those of you who don't know, Tetris is a playword on the Greek word Tetra, meaning 4 in Greek (as in 4 game pieces in Tetris). Just thought it would be cool to share... - coldfusion1970, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12Looks really sweet and i love the Bonjour multiplayer support.
This could be the best Tetris since the Gameboy version. - schamberlin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10TETRIS MAX! I wrote that. But damn, that was a long time ago. Back in the day, '93 - '98 or so, Tetris Max was riding high, and was effectively the default tetris game for the Mac. It had a custom music soundtrack, and modifiable artwork. As a hack cobbled together during one college summer, it succeeded beyond my wildest dreams. I even got a little money for having it bundled into some cheap retail game packages.
People used to send me email with their high scores, asking if I'd ever heard of any higher. People with lighting reflexes were able to maintain the highest level 10 speed almost indefinitely, as long as they maintained a total concentration zone. It was a sight to see.
Like Quinn's author, I also had the Tetris Company come after me, threatening legal action. Amusingly, I also had a second, unrelated company claim ownership of the tetris rights, and was threatened by them as well. Unfortunately the EFF never knocked on my door to offer help. Although I might have survived by renaming the game and rechristening it a "falling blocks puzzle", I didn't want to risk a legal battle that I had no interest in fighting. In 1998 I stopped taking registrations, closed my PO box, and discontinued the game. It was a good run.
I think I still have the original source code and artwork in a dusty archive somewhere. Maybe I should haul it out again and introduce it to OS X... - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10Download the game from there if you want an old version. Download it from these mirrors for the new one.

http://versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/17153 - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Can't call it Tetris though.
Tetris sued him a while back, because he called it an OS X version of Tetris.
He now has to call it a "falling blocks game"
From an interview with the dev:
"Earlier this year, a legal threat was posed against us by the Tetris Company, accusing us of trademark violation and copyright infringement and demanding to stop development and distribution of Quinn. We decided to take Quinn off the server while exploring our legal situation, which took, unfortunately, much longer than expected. During that time, however, we received an overwhelming support from the Mac community, and also legal support from the EFF. And after discussing the matter thoroughly with a EFF lawyers, we fortunately were able to put Quinn online again in late August." - kodek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6There are 7 pieces, not 4, and they're called tetraminoes:

J

T - Roybertito, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I think what's so interesting about it is it's integration with Aqua - it looks fantastic. Plus, it's customizable, works with Mac communication protocals (Bonjour! I can play this with other Mac owners at school without the internet!), has a nice high score database, and is nice and small, perfect for a quick game out of the blue.
For Mac owners who want something to play on downtime, this is a Godsend. I've been playing it for months, and even though this is a dupe, dugg. Totally. - nerd05, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I'm really hoping Simon gets the bugs worked out for the Universal Binary version. I was really happy to find this game after years of looking for a replacement to the aging Tetris Max game for OS 7.
- mikev, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5When enough people click "digg it", it gets promoted to the front page. I know this idea might sound crazy at first - but you'll get used to it, right flag?!
- Zero2aHero, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Ummm... ever heard of Bootcamp?
Those of us who want to run windows and play Half Life 2: deathmatch can play it just as you do.... - OdinEye, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Not to those who haven't heard of it before.
- Arkitan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5I've heard of it before, but not everyone has, so dugg, for free tetris.
- mmmike, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3under the 'game' menu, there is an option for the keyboard layout. change it to 'powerbook'.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7Wow. Are you kidding me? If you own a mac, I'm sure you have heard of this game before.
- keikun, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I don't know, but I'll make sure you see it again and again and again.
- madskjaer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I've been playing Quinn for about 2 months now... Now more players are probably gonna come because of the diggs. Let's just hope the digg effect doesn't crash the highscore server.
- DelMonte, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3@strabes:
And then, to pay for your food and shelter, you're gonna go work in a factory lifting boxes because in your world artists and programmers have an annual salary of $0. - rideagain, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I really like the bonjour network play.
- tracydanger, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Several months back when this was on digg, I got this. I had more fun making new images and backgrounds for it that actually playing it. There are some pretty cool piece styles and backgrounds for it and they are easy to make yourself (I made some that were based off of OS X icons).

You need to replace a RAM. Not a software issue. - bedouin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2If you want to play your friends over the Internet, you'll want to forward ports 31459 thru 31463 to the machine running Quinn.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Hey, where's brickout and pong?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Quinn rocks, but you can't call it "Tetris."
It's a "block" game. Calling it Tetris angers the greedy Tetris company. Quinn was pulled briefly due to threats from the current Tetris owners. - Roybertito, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I hate The Tetris Company. They suck at making their own game (Tetris Worlds is one of the worst games I have ever played in my life - I love Tetris DS though, but Nintendo had a hand in that one anyway), their website has been down and "under construction" for what, 3 years now? And they're greedy! How many overly-priced iterations of Tetris for the cell phone are they going to push out before getting it right?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The multiplayer server list isn't responding - dugg to death I guess. Is anyone able to join my game via IP: 203.158.36.95 - highest number of lines per minute wins!
- garyfranz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1When I had a mac, this was THE best tetris game/clone i have played on any system. moving the pieces around was very smooth and very responsive. most other tetris-like games i play are always somewhat jerky or dont respond as quickly as you would hope.
- thidranki, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1How can something less than 100% free?
- akyra, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I miss the days when 100% free meant 100% free. Yippee.

There's a mirror - eNthem, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2or here: http://www.tucows.com/preview/338954
- evansls, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1umm.... i have a macbook pro. why can't i use the arrows or W A S D to move the pieces? is it possible?
- coldfusion1970, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1No worries mate.
Just uncheck the Apple section. - speedygonzalez, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3here too: http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/10063
- fr34k5h0w, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The game I really want to go Universal is Boom by Factor Software. That game is so old but still so addicting. I remember that game back in '97. Good times... good times /reminiscing
- ff3j, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2This link seems to be the most up to date version: 3.4.5, Dec. 06
- GorGenator, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1no, its one word. Just because its two words in your head doesn't mean you're right.
- drbroccoli, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It begs you non stop to donate.
- drbroccoli, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1There is openoffice and abiword for mac. You can get ogg vorbis codecs for Mac. Quit your bitching.
And magnus, tetris is still cool. We don't need a fancy Half Life 2 Deathmatch. You have no point in fighting us! Resistance is futile! - Zal91, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I love it for a "Falling Block Game" it couldn't get any better.
- fr34k5h0w, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Ever hear of the saying "There's no such thing as a free lunch"?
- FantoMelt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1this has been around for how many years?
thanks so much Simon though. I wish we could donate (can't due to his lawsuit, legal advice advised against taking money). Please use this to try and encourage a universal version for the Intel users (like me). - dumpling, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1i've been playing quinn since i saw it in a story on digg about 8 months ago. to me it's the second best piece of freeware rigt after gimp.
- ShrimpCrackers, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Mac has had Tetris, just not for free and not with multi-player.
After 10 years of wanting a clone of Tetrinet for the PC, we are finally getting it for the Mac. - Dog_Paddle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1strabes, you are the second person I've blocked in ~2 years
Congrats - eNthem, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@ GorGenator: Does the spelling on all keyboards lie then?
- sam1am, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Hmm.. anyone able to compare gameplay with Tetrinet?
- thatgirlismine, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Tetris Max was the model for Descender, which is also the only tetris clone with smooth piece movement, at least on the mac: http://www.sloppydisk.com/descender/
I can't understand why tetris clones still drop the pieces down tile by tile, instead of making them fall smoothly.... - hifigi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yeah, Descender is the sweetness.
