- psycx, on 10/12/2007, -2/+33Queen Elizabeth II is the Queen if the United Kingdom, not England.
- neiltc13, on 10/12/2007, -4/+43Just to follow up on this for those who do not know (because they're probably American and think that there's two countries outside the US - Muslimland and England):
- England = England
- Scotland = Scotland
- Wales = Wales
- Northern Ireland = Northern Ireland
England + Scotland + Wales = Great Britain
England + Scotland + Wales + Northern Ireland = United Kingdom
Republic of Ireland (ie, the south of Ireland) is a COMPLETELY seperate country with its own Government and a different currency to the UK. - Mist0r_Wiggles, on 10/12/2007, -11/+25@neiltc13
wow, now that's pretty complicated.
I think I'll just call them "That European country that didn't bitch out in WW2"
straight to the point, and it's got a ring to it. - nreynolds, on 10/12/2007, -25/+6not as good of a ring as "dirty brits"
and Ireland is great. I'd say "Ireland FTW" but I hate when people say that. Being half Irish is the best thing I ever did with my life. - greghunt, on 10/12/2007, -1/+19Hrm, you learn something new everyday (I'm English so I know what the UK is obviously)
wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elizabeth_II_of_the_United_Kingdom
"Apart from the United Kingdom, Elizabeth II is also Queen of Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Jamaica, Barbados, the Bahamas, Grenada, Papua New Guinea, the Solomon Islands, Tuvalu, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Antigua and Barbuda, Belize, and Saint Kitts and Nevis, where she is represented by Governors-General. The 16 countries of which she is queen are known as Commonwealth Realms, and their combined population is 128 million."
I knew about Canadia, but I wasn't sure about some of the others
I like being British :) - Geekbeard, on 10/12/2007, -15/+6"I like being British :)"
So what, are you English, Scottish, or Welsh? (Obviously English, because a Welsh or Scottish person wouldn't call themselves British =P). I don't think many people will get that joke. - JohnP, on 10/12/2007, -1/+19"didn't bitch out in WW2"
Bit of an understatement. Read a history book. - jimthetaff, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10And furthermore to refer to the Northern Irish, Scottish or Welsh as English is usually taken as a grave insult.
The German monarch is not considered to be Queen of the above first three countries by the majority of their population either. - jimthetaff, on 10/12/2007, -14/+1@geekbeard - I think the fact that he states "I'm English" is a bit of a giveaway. Although why someone would admit to such a thing in public is beyond my comprehension
- greghunt, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4I usually make it clear that I'm English not (North) American when in a foreign country (places in South America and Asia spring to mind)
The fact that I can speak English and American is probably what confuses people ;) - foshaug, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7I usually make it clear that I am from Ireland, and not England or Wales.
Those Welsh bastards :-) - greghunt, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Getting side-tracked...
If I'm being annoyed by a hawker or a stupid American I tell them I'm from Wales*. That usually confuses them enough to leave me alone.
*It's a small country off of the coast of Switzerland. - ggko, on 10/12/2007, -8/+4"[Americans] think that there's two countries outside the US - Muslimland and England"
You forgot Poland. - AgoodChap, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7@ JohnP
"didn't bitch out in WW2"
Bit of an understatement. Read a history book.
The British were preparing to use the first anthrax missile and that they were holding out till the Germans invaded. Which did not happen. They had to hold off, or they wouldn't have anything to carry the stuff to the beach.
- neiltc13, on 10/12/2007, -4/+43Just to follow up on this for those who do not know (because they're probably American and think that there's two countries outside the US - Muslimland and England):
- JohnP, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Woo (yes the ***** comment system strikes again!)
- djjuice, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1that is some pretty good news.. now i'm guessing this is better than being knighted?
The only downside to this is the fact he can't use the title in the USA. He should celebrate back home.- bornhj, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Nope, the CBE is one step below being knighted: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Order_of_the_British_Empire
- jimthetaff, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6@djjuice - yes he can use the title in any country he pleases, it's his title. I think you are confused with the fact that you have to be a citizen of the British Empire to use the title associated with the honour i.e. Sir Richard Branson is a knight and Bill Gates is a knight, however Billy boy can't be called Sir Bill Gates because he is not a citizen of the British Empire.
- WoCi, on 10/12/2007, -7/+0chill out dudes...
- zonk3r, on 10/12/2007, -6/+1Pix please?
- Boondoggle, on 10/12/2007, -5/+3Of what, Johnathan Ives?
Hows this then:
http://tinyurl.com/2rfwr - zonk3r, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1Of the event wiseass.
- Boondoggle, on 10/12/2007, -5/+3Of what, Johnathan Ives?
- JurneyAhed, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9Should've said 'honours' - it's in context =P
- ravenmuffin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1[broken comment system]
- zeiben, on 10/12/2007, -8/+3How appropriate... He gets a flashy title that looks good but doesn't actually allow him to DO anything.
- sulci, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2it sounds nice too... :o
- Mofo, on 10/12/2007, -12/+3Good god you guys are all arguing over England/UK. That's like America/US. I am well aware of the differences between the different nomenclatures of the UK but they all stem back to old English imperialism that conquered those other territories. Have you ever hear the term King/Queen of the United Kingdom? There is the prime minister of the UK and the King/Queen of England. And the UK uses pounds even though they are part of the EU to be even more confusing.
- exatco, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Eh, no it is not like America/US. It is like someone saying George Bush is the president of California. There is no such person as the Queen of England and not all those territories have been conquered.
- Applemacmad, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11It can't possibly get any more simple - the UK is better than America.
Now, that wasn't difficult, was it?
Now go learn some real English - relativesanity, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6My god - this probably qualifies as the worst comment I've ever read on Digg! My favourite bit is how you say "I'm well aware" right before you show how unaware you actually are!
Please, just wikipedia United Kingdom and realise how wrong you are, you stupid Mexican. - Xenophix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Only Americans refer to the UK Monarch as the "Queen Of England", despite often calling us "Brits", "British", or tell us we're from a place called "Britain". Britain is not a place. Britain is a mini-EU. You wouldn't say "I'm European" ahead of saying "I'm English", you would indeed say... "I'm English".
Using pounds in relation to the EU isn't confusing at all, it's economics. Not to mention us distancing ourselves from the EU, as we always have from 'the continent', as is often so-called. The Pound is our currency; the Euro is the currency of Italy, France, Germany, Switzerland, Spain, Portugal, Greece, Belgium, Holland and a load of other places. - nomore, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4@Mofo
England/UK ... America/US
WTF?
England is a country within the UK.
America is not a country within the US. The US is a country within the continent of America. - DeezKnots, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"It can't possibly get any more simple - the UK is better than America.

You *****. The best things that came from the UK are...
1. Linsey Dawn McKenzie
2. Benny Hill
3. Lucky Charms
and McJagger is up their somewhere. By the way, why has he not been knighted yet? - ravenmuffin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Sir Mick was knighted in 2003.

There are no pics of this ceremony; it's held in private inside Buckingham Palace as that is the tradition. The press are never allowed inside the actual room where it takes place. They can only take photos once the people leave the palace.- FreeiPodGuy.com, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Hmmm...
Makes me wonder what ACTUALLY goes on in there.
I think they're killing goats. - mrblack, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1they flog videos of the event to people. Somebody I know has a nice £30 video of them getting an OBE.
- FreeiPodGuy.com, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Hmmm...
- B0jangles, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1My god people on digg are uncultured. Stop talking out your arse, using wikipedia to back up your points and get your facts right!

Switzerland ?! What about Kazakhstan? - ravenmuffin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I think I can imagine how the ceremony with Her Majesty went...
"I, Elizabeth the Second, Queen of England and a few other tinpot little countries where they have strange accents and don't talk proper, anoint you Sir Jonathan Ive, Lord of the Apple Orchard, Duke of Cupertino, and official emissary to the evil warlord Steve Jobs.
"Now announce the damn 6th generation iPod, already!" - HappyScrappy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Ive did very little design on the iPod. Read the latest Wired article on it.
