Pulling a Wozniak: App Store Developers "Cutting Line"
gizmodo.com — A few Apple App Store developers have apparently taken a page from the line cutting Steve Wozniak today, and are using a loop hole in the service's naming conventions to shoot their apps to the top of the list

- Zalyster, on 07/13/2008, -6/+20Ah, we finally see how MakiMaki, MrBabyMan, and Msaleem do it!
- bobthedino, on 07/14/2008, -4/+66Buried... Woz didn't cut into the line.
- t0ny, on 07/14/2008, -1/+24From gizmodo "Crisis averted, it seems. Comments on and about the original CNET article, including from Steve Wozniak and Leo Laporte, indicate that Woz waited from 4:00 a.m. until the doors opened at 10:00 a.m. All the people in line Friday morning before Woz arrived had agreed that it would be fine if he went in to the store first. In fact, they insisted, said one Gizmodo tipster. This appears to be a case of a few jilted iPhone line sitters trying to soil Woz's good name! Final ruling: Woz had a space saved in line at the 3G launch (posse included). Original post appears in its entirety after the jump."
At least he even waits in line, you would think he could get a iPhone early if he wanted because he is the co-founder of Apple. - OmegaNine, on 07/14/2008, -6/+2I would say it would be more like "He is the sole founder of today's PC"
- phibit, on 07/14/2008, -3/+2Are you stupid? You are if you think you can pin down the "sole founder" of the "today's PC". Woz was at best a contributor, among many.
Next you'll tell us Al Gore invented the internet. Oh fanboys, the things you say. - Baryn, on 07/14/2008, -0/+1YEAH! ***** yu in the dick OmegaNine! If that IS your real namer. I bet it really isn't. ***** you.

- romeyinfc, on 07/14/2008, -1/+2The more appropriate description is "Pulled a Scoble"

- Wailord, on 07/14/2008, -7/+10Dugg for Woz.
- LumpOfCole, on 07/14/2008, -2/+4I lol'd today when I was looking through the list and people used things like spaces and doodads to shoot their programs to the top of the list. The ones who got really screwed are the ones who named their programs "iThis" or "iThat," as the lower case actually shot their stuff to the bottom of the list entirely as lower case is not mixed up with upper case.
- ibone, on 07/14/2008, -12/+2Nobody here gives a *****. This is Apples problem not ours.
- TheLogic, on 07/14/2008, -9/+6Buried. Really, this is front page? I mean, I know any article about iPhones will get front paged, but do you really honestly give a ***** about app developers cutting the line?
- phibit, on 07/14/2008, -2/+1Did you read the article? They're not literally cutting in line... They're taking advantage of poor validation to push their applications to the top of a sorted list.
Edit: but yes, it's still boring.

- ohplease, on 07/14/2008, -2/+21
Can we please stop digging Gizmodo, everything from their website in the last 2 weeks has been poorly written, clueless idiocy.
Woz didn't cut the line. We know that, why don't they?- darkane, on 07/14/2008, -0/+3More like 2 years.
- phibit, on 07/14/2008, -0/+2Seriously, I just browsed a few articles on Gizmodo... It's like TMZ for technology. Talking about Woz and Kathy Griffin? Wtf?
- PhantomBantam, on 07/15/2008, -0/+1Yeah, gizmodo is utter *****. They will do anything to drive page views except good writing/reporting. Remember when they reported the iPhone being released in a week, only to find out it's the cisco iPhone? Remember when they interrupted people's presentations at CES by turning off their TVs? Me too. Remember when they had some integrity? Me neither. Gizmodo is crap.
- derleiermann, on 07/14/2008, -2/+27Buried as inaccurate. Gizmodo is doing really crappy stories lately... pulling a woz? Jeez...
- CATSCEO2, on 07/14/2008, -5/+1Its called a joke.
- zelzin, on 07/14/2008, -1/+3Jokes are funny.
- CATSCEO2, on 07/14/2008, -5/+1Its called a joke.
- zelzin, on 07/14/2008, -1/+21FYI: Woz didn't cut in line. He is Woz. They simply brought him to the front.
And about the naming... a simple fix.
News? No. Buried. - Lingur, on 07/14/2008, -0/+8trim(appName) = Problem solved!
- ScorpionV, on 07/14/2008, -1/+1I agree. All developers should know to always trim user input.
- iMaffo, on 07/14/2008, -0/+0Yeah, but let's do it the Cocoa Obj-C way!
appName = [appName trimWhiteSpace];
:P

- Aitese, on 07/14/2008, -0/+1This premise only works if people are really dumb enough that their purchasing decisions are based on which app is highest up alphabetically on a list. Are people that dumb?
- TheSillyOne60, on 07/14/2008, -0/+8Yes
- phibit, on 07/14/2008, -0/+1Presumably, a lot of them are buying their second iPhone for over 100$. So yes.
- shauncullen, on 07/14/2008, -0/+3Indeed
- xsmasher, on 07/14/2008, -0/+1With such a large pool of apps - and without the benefit of reviews and ratings yet - it becomes a numbers game.
This is like "cheating" your way onto the first page of google search results. Some people will see the first page of apps, and never click "next." More eyeballs = more sales.
- TheSillyOne60, on 07/14/2008, -0/+8Yes
- iMaffo, on 07/14/2008, -5/+0appName = [appName trimWhiteSpace];
- iMaffo, on 07/14/2008, -0/+0Oh if you are digging me down it must be because you are all microsoft fanboys! (LOL) So here you are the C#/.NET way:
appName.Trim();
(look at the Java way: appName.trim(); pretty much similar? blink.)
XD
- iMaffo, on 07/14/2008, -0/+0Oh if you are digging me down it must be because you are all microsoft fanboys! (LOL) So here you are the C#/.NET way:
- colourclassic, on 07/14/2008, -6/+1*space* Now Digg Me Up!
- silence7, on 07/14/2008, -3/+5Hmm, which one to digg, this one submitted 14 hours ago with 195 diggs, or the other one submitted 18 hours ago with 395... http://digg.com/apple/Developers_furious_over_App_ ... this one does have a funnier title, as it references another story, but the story was a non story to begin with plus the other one is older.
- drikle, on 07/14/2008, -6/+0I thought Microsoft made insecure Software, at apple they can't even trim a string!
- MacParrot, on 07/14/2008, -1/+1At least they get trim. What's your excuse?
- drikle, on 07/14/2008, -2/+0Your nick says you suck
- MacParrot, on 07/14/2008, -0/+1And yours says what exactly? A quote just for you and all the other random Apple haters.
"Life's but a walking shadow, a poor player
That struts and frets his hour upon the stage
And then is heard no more. It is a tale
Told by an idiot, full of sound and fury
Signifying nothing."
- MacParrot, on 07/14/2008, -1/+1At least they get trim. What's your excuse?
- jrtcs, on 07/14/2008, -1/+3Gizmodo = Automatic bury.
- P5ycHo, on 07/14/2008, -0/+1It'z ok. It's Woz!!
- deadmoo, on 07/14/2008, -0/+1This is like all those Aaa company names in the yellow pages. Remember the yellow pages?
- mehtajr, on 07/14/2008, -0/+1No longer true. Checking the store now shows the spaces are gone. All these apps now show up in the Js.
- mentor972, on 07/14/2008, -0/+1I've got one better...
I was in Washington DC, and a friend of mine took two security guards from work with suits and earpieces to the front of the line. She wore large, dark sunglasses and pretended they were her personal secret service. Everyone just let her go right ahead and buy one. - jabberwolf, on 07/14/2008, -0/+1This is stupid.
Sorry but the loophole is the stores fault and not the company. Simple to force the name to be only specific characters and not symbols or others. Apple store should have thought of that, but that's a little bit much too for them. - MrViklund, on 07/14/2008, -0/+3Buried as spam because of gizmodo.com. Those kids are not worthy writing about anything Apple or iPhone.
- BretFTW, on 07/14/2008, -0/+3Buried for "Pulling a Wozniak"
- Sandlapper, on 07/15/2008, -0/+1Buried as well.
- arapro, on 07/15/2008, -0/+1I cut line
